Quarterback Of Last Resort

August 14th, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

General manager Jason Licht got very candid in a backhanded way yesterday. And and it let Joe know that Jameis Winston returning to the Bucs this season was the equivalent of a the Bucs opting for a checkdown pass on 3rd-and-17.

“I like Jameis. Bruce likes Jameis,” Licht told NBC Sports yesterday. “You know Jameis, there were several scenarios where Jameis, we would have made a pitch to keep Jameis. But we just obviously had an opportunity to get Tom, and our evaluation of Tom was, ‘This guy can this play and it’s not just for one more year.’ We think he’s got more than one year left, if he wants to continue his career.”

That “several scenarios” line was telling.

If Licht is to be believed, then Jameis was not the team’s first option if it didn’t land Brady. So how many if-then scenarios would their had to have been for the Bucs to make Jameis an offer? And if Licht is to be trusted, then the Bucs never made a pitch to keep Jameis.

Ironically, Arians said multiple times he could win in 2020 with Jameis. So that’s yet another reason Arians has no excuses in 2020.

Joe loves the Brady signing. Don’t get it twisted. But it is a little unnerving that Licht just publicly acknowledged that Brady playing in 2021 is a question mark.

It’s all-in for 2020!

  1. Jean Lafitte Says:

Who cares as long as we finally cut the umbilical cord to Winston. We were going nowhere with him at least now we have hope every season looking for the right guy after Brady decides to retire. It’s not like we have a history of winning to protect. We could of used a different QB every season for the last 5 years and got the same losing results. Besides all the personal records he did nothing to move this franchise forward.

  2. yeah Says:

“We think that he has more than one year left”……

  3. Ndog Says:

So Jean let me get this straight you want a rookie quarterback to come into an absolute dumpster fire with one of the worst defenses in the league and absolute horrible kicker, no running game and an average at best offensive line and turn the franchise around by himself? Let’s just be clear that’s what you were expecting right?

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Ndog

So what did JW do for us in five seasons? Who’s to say a rookie couldn’t have done better or even worse the same results as JW. Five years wasted trying to pin the tail on that donkey.

  5. Bucsfan951 Says:

I’m still waiting for someone to show me where the Bucs told jw they were going to sign him and to not listen to other teams. A report from a source (worth a darn) that reported this.

    I’m waiting…

  6. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Ndog

Fortunately for your boy, he has escaped the horror that is the Bucs’. Holding that clipboard shouldn’t be too much for him.

  7. Bucsfan951 Says:

No NPUPPY he expects a rookie qb to come in and not make high school like mistakes at the nfl level.

You know, not lead the league in turnovers since entering the league.

Not get suspended for being a perv.

The stupid hand eating stunts along with stuoid pre game poems.

You know, be a man and get his job done!

I prefer my qbs use yahoo to google. Yahoo gets you better results.

  8. mike Says:

ndog….it was a playoff team last year with an average qb. Everyone on this team grew but the qb didnt

  9. SmoothBayRider Says:

Lmao . NPuppy worries about a rookie . It’s not like young guys can’t come in and be way better than what Jameis Winston was . The last two league MVP winners (Pat Mahomes and Lamar Jackson) won the award in just their 2nd season .

  10. Buc1987 Says:

“This guy can this play and it’s not just for one more year.”

    I’m confused Joe.

How does that translate to you that : “But it is a little unnerving that Licht just publicly acknowledged that Brady playing in 2021 is a question mark.”?

  11. Tampabuscsbro Says:

OH BOY LETS SEE WHAT THE SHILL FORCE IS CRYING ABOUT TODAY.

  12. John Sinclear Says:

    Here’s your worst case scenario.

Opening in New Orleans, Bucs win the toss, opt to receive. First play from scrimmage is a slant pass. Receiver’s cleat gets caught in the artificial turf. He trips, pass is intercepted for a pick 6, and Winston’s standing on the sideline, jumping, pointing and laughing.

  13. bucsfan951 Says:

well, john, he couldnt laugh too much. jw’s first and last pass as a buc were pick 6’s

  14. Jean Lafitte Says:

    John Sinclear

That could happen. But we both know it won’t be because Brady missed his target receiver and threw it straight to the defender like JW did so often. Not even giving his receiver a chance. Check yo sheets

  15. PSL Bob Says:

Joe, like Yeah posted, ‘This guy can this play and it’s not just for one more year.’ Don’t see where that’s a question mark.

  16. BucEmUp Says:

Brady signed for two seasons. Why is 2021 a question mark?

    Oh come on now……

JayMiss can ABSOLUTELY find a way to eff that up too!

Of course that will be followed by a press conference with him telling us how blessed he is and that he just has to get better.

    God is good.

  18. bucsfan951 Says:

    @dooosh

of course he’ll find a way to screw that up!

just like when he (jw) came off the sidelines when he was injured to start the fight in NOLA…

JW is a cancer! I WILL BE MAN ENOUGH TO SAY IT!!! JAMEIS WINSTON IS A CANCER!!!

  19. Buc4evr Says:

I would have been happy keeping Jameis as a backup to Brady for a few years. Maybe Tom could have helped Jameis, maybe not ? But he would have been a good insurance policy at the right price. Problem was that Jameis wanted way too much and ended up settling for a pittance in NO. Idiot.

  20. Ndog Says:

You people are a piece of work, I done with this site, good luck Joe now that you’ve allowed the real fans of this team to be driven away. Good luck to your old folks home team peeps.

When you have 5-10 visitors coming to your site once the old men are gone don’t be surprised.

  21. bucsfan951 Says:

    PUPPY,

was it the cancer statement that drove you away?

dont worry, youll be back. youve left before and youll come back either as the puppy or under a different name.

  22. BA4President Says:

I’m just happy the team isn’t making excuses for JW anymore. That was 4 long years. The first year JW played very well for a rookie. But the final 4 were rough.

Dismissing a QB’s interceptions because he has great yards is like… a cornerback who often completes a tackle for a goal line stand, but also regularly misses tackles that result in 40 yard touchdown runs. It’s cool that he got those goal line tackles, but you don’t want that dude on your team.

  23. yeah Says:

You think Jean Lafitte has a burning passion for Jameis Winston now. Just wait for him to be the starting QB of the saint for the next 10 years. If the dude just fixes 1 part of his game he will definitely be in elite company.

And you will be back in probably a hour or so going against your own pathetic word…….Oh and you done this at least 450 times on this site already…….You cant tell the truth about Our team and you lie to your own danged self. Almost exclusively…………..That’s all. Just wanted to share a few facts.

  28. Tye Says:

31 other teams did not even view him as a value at the backup position so, GOOD CaLL on the Bucs part!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Jean Lafitte Says:

    yeah

Listen, I wish JW the best but too bad it’s on a team in our division, so I have to continue hoping he plays poorly. I didn’t want to and I never did trash JW before his fourth season hoping he would change, but I grew tired of his chicanery, subterfuge, and immaturity after year 4. If he were on another team besides the Saints I would be behind him 100 percent to go on and have a great career. As it is now, I hope he stays buried on the bench.

This was the worst time for Jameis to have his worst game ever. I ALWAYS call it like I see it and today pick #1, 2 and 4 were 100% his fault and none of those throws should be happening to a franchise QB. My personal belief in him was shaken today and I find it hard to believe that many of the people in the building don’t feel the same way.

    🤣🤣🤣

    GO BUCS!!!!

    I know, right?

Don’t you just love people that do that?

  39. Mort Says:

Ariana or Christiansen (I forget which) already said the order was as follows:

    1: Brady
    2: Bridgewater
    3: Jameis

There is nothing to read into, that’s been stated publicly.

  40. Bobby M. Says:

It was widely reported the Bucs were attempting to extend Winston…unfortunately his party was delusional on his market value. As a free agent, your value is what the market will pay you. The NFL market is generally very aggressive towards starting QBs. Brady fetched $25 million per year on the open market. Winston….he got a $1 million as a 3rd string QB.

  41. D-Rome Says:

Jay-Miss was the Bucs’ last option. Turns out he was the last option for 31 other NFL teams. He was given far more weapons to succeed than many other QBs in the NFL including Tom Brady and Lamar Jackson. Good riddance.

The rest of you should just ignore Ndog. He is either JayMiss1of1 or close to the Winston family. He’s not a Bucs fan. He’s a Winston fan.

  42. SufferingSince76 Says:

  45. Elita Vita Says:

    @ Ndog

Funny, I had a different take on Licht saying: “it’s not just for one more year”. I read it as meaning :”Who knows, he could maybe play for several years”.

  46. SB Says:

    I meant 813
    Sorry bro

  47. bucsfaninOregon Says:

And so Ndog has joined his buddy NOSBOS in self exile. Watch for new avatars. I’m sure NOSBOS is here in disguise. Hey NOSBOS, how did that 10 win Buc season in 2019 work for you?

  48. DBS Says:

Ndog has told this lie before. Done with this site only to return.. Because people have a different opion of Winston then you. Poor little hurt pup.

  49. gotbbucs Says:

Winston was never an option to return. Winston single handedly buried his NFL career the last three games of 2019. He could have made a small attempt at playing smart football, but he couldn’t.

He’s one sexual misconduct accusation away from a year long suspension, if not longer given his past. No team is going to pin their hopes and dreams to a clown like that. Time in the NFL is too fleeting for anyone to take that chance.

The Patriots barely had a QB on the roster and Belichick didnt want him for less than a million dollars.

  50. Clean House Says:

NDog is spot on on his analysis- don’t worry I will continue to remind you all.

  51. DoooshLaRue Says:

  56. Clean House Says:

Article should be called GM of last resort,
Although I don’t fault him for getting the GOAT

I have to say though, I’m kinda sick of calling him the GOAT-
I know he has the championships, but I prefer Payton Manning personally.
Would Manning have the same championships if he had the Pats? Belichick?

  57. Youngbucs Says:

Clean house talking about manning now oh boy. Brady still playing and ya boy Winston hanging on by a thread he better tighten up.

  58. SB Says:

So YOU are the reason that Tyrod Taylor is starting……I get it.

  59. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Old news. It was always Brady, Bridgewater, Jameis…when Bridge went to Carolina it was because the Bucs told him Brady was probably coming. They also told Jameis they wanted him back, just hold on while we try Brady. Source? Arians and Licht in March. #content

  62. Cobraboy Says:

  66. Joe in Michigan Says:

Cobraboy: I agree. I worked for a guy who was friends with a Dallas Cowboys coach in the 2000’s. He told me Drew Bledsoe would be the Dallas QB for that upcoming season, months before a deal was announced.

  67. Craig Says:

Brady big time this year, not so big next year. The Bucs are probably lining up Aaron Rodgers already.

If the Bucs make a playoff run this season it will do a world of good for the mindset of the team. Sometimes they need to remember that they can win, that is all it takes.

The Bucs also have two new RBs, both of whom I am excited about.

Yeah, the right rookie QB could start a dynasty. Look at Mahomes.

Way to simplify the situation!!! 🙂

  69. Cobraboy Says:

@Craig: A Mahomes is like a rainbow unicorn. Plus, he went to a well-coached team stacked with playmakers.

And he’s not checkin’ his sheets or ballin’…

  70. David Says:

Absolutely it would have been. It was basically giving him one last chance well knowing damn well they need to draft a QB. They still need to draft one next year now but big difference from where they will be coming from

  71. NOLES Says:

1st NFL pass was a Pick last pass with Bucs was a pick….

There is nothing to talk about with Jameis.. why are we still talking about him..

Or just buy a Jameis Saints Jersey and get it it over with. Your man crush is beyond strong.

Good luck rooting for the Saints. They have a WR ahead of him on the QB depth chart… lol

    Licht finally saw the light

  75. FromtheBucinning Says:

We, the Bucs (and fans) mortgaged our future in the hopes that things will go the way everyone is expecting them to. Right now, we’re paper champions. Here’s the question, how many paper champions have won the SuperBowl let alone the playoffs?

The excitement is real, BUT, if things don’t turn out the way everyone is expecting we’ve set the franchise back another decade. If that happens ME13 will want out, Goodwin is not a lock to comeback next yeae, OJ if leaving as soon as he gets a chance And you’re looking for a new quarterback to do essentially what you just ran Jamies out of town for trying to do while breaking all the team records at his position.

We were potentially setup to make a run for the next 5-10 years. We’ll see what happens and revisit this at this time next year or maybe after game 9.
