Explosive!

December 17th, 2019

Somewhere in Georgia, Dirk Koetter is smiling.

The former Bucs coach, and current offensive coordinator with the Dixie Chicks (for now at least) was big on explosive plays. He thought those were the key to a dangerous offensive.

And one could argue Koetter is right, even though he is up the road on I-75.

Per stats from the good people of NFL Films, compiling date for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, only one other NFL team is racking up explosive plays like the Bucs.

(NFL Films describes explosive plays as runs of at least 15 yards and passes of 20 yards or more.)

Most of this Bucs’ explosive offense is, of course from passing. The Bucs lead the NFL with pass plays of 20 yards or more with 67.

Man, imagine how dangerous this offense would be (the Bucs are currently third in points with 416) if the Bucs had any kind of threat in the run game.

    I just imagined that.

Excuse me while I go grab some Kleenex.

  2. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

A new running back could be just what the Bucs need. JW’s best season ( prior to this “uneven” one ) was Doug Martin’s final effective year.

  3. Alanbucsfan Says:

Draft OTackle in 1st round, Center in 3rd or 4th round

  4. J Says:

We absolutely need to upgrade RB and Oline but BA complementing the RB’s is a bit terrifying.

  5. ou812 Says:

With the best three WR’s tandem in the game it’s almost expected .

    Lets see this week!

When he cant just heave it and let one of his stud receivers run under it .

He will have to protect the ball!!! Not looking good this week. VHGIII should scare us Bucs fans!! We have seen this before!!

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

They would have a better run game if they had an o-line that could run block. I can’t tell the difference from their run blocking to their pass blocking. They look like they’re pass blocking on run plays. They get hardly ever push forward.

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

“Did you see Sean Paytons RB screen play design?

In the open and away from heavy traffic

Why does our QB Coach Intern Helter skelter RB screen play design look like 6 players playing twister?

    Kobe Faker demands this offseason

Byron Leftwich to kick Sean Paytons wife out of bed and

sleep, eat, pee beside Sean Payton”

  8. Aubpierce Says:

What they need are offensive linemen that can run block. I’ve seen all of the games and on one occasion there was an open lane other then the three long runs by 27 that were called back for holding. The open lane was the touchdown by 25. Other then those few times a mouse could’t fit through the holes the offensive line created. Because of their running styles Barry Sanders and Jim Brown are the only two running backs that could flourish behind this offensive line. Draft three offensive linemen that can run block and watch the Bucs have two thousand yard backs and Winston will throw for 5000+ and cut his interceptions in half.

  9. Casual Observer Says:

    Agree with Aubpierce.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    smiling?…

nawl dirk and smitty are somewhere puking because this staff has exposed them….

we’re scoring TDs and the DBs are being developed….the previous staff couldnt develop anything except for pass catchers….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. Slugglife Says:

It’s run blocking that’s the problem. Not the running backs. We need some nasty road graders that double as pass protectors.

  12. 1sparkybuc Says:

Jameis leads the league in passing yards despite defenses not being concerned about our ground game. They focus on defending the pass which accounts for the high rate of interceptions. RT and C plus an impact RB have to be addressed in the draft and free agency. Winning teams have to have a balanced attack. I’m confident that no matter who stays or goes, the defense will be at worst mediocre. That’s a huge improvement over the last few years. A mediocre ground attack coupled with Jameis should get a wildcard if we don’t win the division. We have the coaching and great talent at key positions. A second year in the system plus an upgrade of talent should mean playoffs in 2020.

    Todd:
I’m hoping those Kleenex are for your tears.

  14. SKBucsFan Says:

As much as JW is bad at throwing picks, his long ball accuracy has improved over the last few games. It was horrendous until recently. Confidence? Good receivers? Not sure, but I hope the trend continues.

  15. pick6 Says:

it’s tough to have it all. in theory an explosive passing game should lead to fewer stacked boxes and give RBs more room, but i think we don’t have an RB with both explosiveness and vision to make the most of it. RoJo has the former but not the latter, and Peyton is a plodder who is better at avoiding negative runs than he is breaking big ones.

the problem needs to be solved with a young, cheap RB because money will need to continue to be focused on the passing game and the OL in the Winston era, and we already know what happens when we don’t accumulate talent on defense

  16. OBP Says:

For how much money our O-line is getting paid they’ve been pathetic all season, Jameis has been sacked over 40 times and we can’t run to save our lives. We need a massive overhaul in the offseason.

  17. Billy_45 Says:

I love how so many on here agree that O Line has to be addressed in FA and the draft.

This draft will be fun to watch because we won’t hear a name called and be like WTF, who is that.

Ala Freeman as the 5th QB taken.

Todd McShay has us taking that beast of a DT from SC Kinlaw.
I wouldn’t even be disappointed with that, even though I hope it Wirfs from Iowa, or heaven forbid move up for Thomas by 8-10th pick.

  18. Billy_45 Says:

My dream off-season would be getting Scherff from the Redskins in FA as maybe the best run blocking RG in the league and move Cappa to RT.

Pick up Swift at #17 in the draft.

Draft another RT in round 2 unless we can get Castonzo as well from the Colts.

Then we gotta go D Line round 3 if not earlier.

  19. Buczilla Says:

D’Andre Smith, rb GA, for the win!

  20. teacherman777 Says:

Imagine if Licht had picked an elite RG instead of MJ Stewart.

Draft Rojo. Then draft a RG. Then Carlton Davis. That would have been great!

Instead we drafted a LT from a Div.II school. 😫

We need a new RG and RT next year.

Cappa is a great backup. He can backup at C, G, and T.

But hes not a starter. A 3rd round swing backup lineman? Great. But hes not a starter.

  21. Allbuccedup Says:

Isiah Wilson RT Georgia just declared for draft 6′ 7″ 340lbs. Projection late first round. There you go.
