For The Anti-Donovan Smith Gang

November 18th, 2019

Guaranteed loot.

Yes the Bucs’ offensive line was bad yesterday. But the main culprit wasn’t fan favorite left tackle Donovan Smith.

Yeah, Smith got burned by Cam Jordan. Welcome to the club. A bunch of offensive linemen get burned by Cam Jordan. He has 81 career sacks.

The main culprit yesterday was the right side of the offensive line. Jordan went nuts on Demar Dotson.

Now Joe knows since before Donovan Smith was drafted there were a lot of folks — and Joe has no idea why or where the this originated — who thought Smith was a right tackle. Joe suspects it was those noted football savants the PFF tribe.

At any rate, it may have been Smith’s second year, and Joe asked Smith about playing right tackle. Smith told Joe flat out he couldn’t play right tackle. Smtih detailed how physically, he would be a complete sieve.

For Joe, that ended that.

So for those who want to move Smith to right tackle, he can’t play there. But then these same folks say, “Well, then cut his @ss.”

That’s not going to happen any time soon. Per Spotrac.com, Smith’s salary is guaranteed this year and in 2020, when he’ll earn some $14 million. Joe doesn’t think the Bucs have any desire to eat a $14 million salary and shove Smith out the door.

Again, per Spotrac, Smith’s salary is not guaranteed for 2021, so for those pining to unload him, that might be the earliest date to wave goodbye, if the Bucs were inclined to do so.

Now why does Joe think Smith is ok? Joe sees too many plays where Smith pass blocks quite well. And how quickly we forget Smith once blocked for a man who ran for 1,000 yards. Seems like a guy running for 1,000 yards would be a near-impossible task behind a windmill of a left tackle.

But Joe certainly does remember what a “bad” left tackle is. Joe vividly remembers Smith’s predecessor, the famed Anthony Collins. In his only season with the Bucs, Collins was so bad the team told him to go home in December and never come back. He never played another snap in the NFL again.

    Even decent LT’s are hard to come by.

    Not saying Smith is trash but he is certainly Cam Jordan’s prag.

    It’d be nice to see him with more fire in his face and body language.

    Question marks at nearly every position for this team… it’s so hard to fathom.

  2. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    Joe the Winston defense force is about to come in here and jump down your throat and blame everything on him. and say we should have never signed him and he is a bum that shouldn’t be a backup. and go on about how much he loafs and doesn’t try.

  3. CPN Says:

    I mean even then, Smith wasn’t doing anyone any favors. He got burned a lot like Dotson in the pass rush giving up consistent pressures in today’s game.

  4. BrianBucs Says:

    Donovan Smith did not have a good game. Go back and watch the film.

  5. Jean Lafitte Says:

    I’m sorry Joe but you guys ran cover for Demar when everybody else was hollering. You let your friendship and easy access to Demar cloud your judgement on his regression. You chastised fans for being too critical. The proof was in the pudding. ..and I call BS that Smith couldn’t move to RT. What you should have said was Smith won’t want to move to RT. Why? because LT’s make more money.

  6. ElioT Says:

    …still waiting for BA to “out coach” an opponent too.

    Although that might be hard to do, if you aren’t calling any plays and just b**** at refs and throw challenge flags that (opinions aside), you lose almost always.

    I thought, well BA would at least bring respect back to Tampa. Boy was I wrong. It’d be different if this was the team Schiano inherited. In fact, I kinda miss those Schiano years…

    It’s all just so disappointing.

    Apathy is setting in hardcore, this team just isn’t really worth the time.

  7. Joe Says:

    Jean:

    Can only tell you what Smith told Joe. What is Joe supposed to say to Smith in response, call him a liar? Interviews are not inquisitions.

  8. ElioT Says:

    Not a single signature win so far this year.

    Major roster changes coming (departures and acquisitions).

    If things don’t change for the better, and quickly, what’s the message going into 2020?

    I feel bad for the Bucs marketing team.

    How do you sell this garbage?

  9. Architek79 Says:

    LMAO this is a clown show of a franchise LOLOL. Only in Tampa will this sieve get air time.

  10. DB55 Says:

    Not a single signature win so far this year.
    —————–
    Wow! So a 55 point win in LA is nothing? Noted.

    I was a big fan of Smith, then he went vegan and has played like dodo.

    As for Demar I told y’all he sucks but wtfdik.

  11. DB55 Says:

    Yo joe let’s cut the crap and report on the riff between Americas quarterback and Godzilla. If there is one which there might be from the outside looking in.

  12. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Well you’re right, it’s not your place to call players out on what they may say. I apologize if I came across too harsh.

    DB55

    Yeah I thought it was telling when Jensen cut Godzilla off when he beelining straight toward Winston.

  15. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Maybe Evans gonna make noise like DJax

  16. Proudbucsfan Says:

    Hey joe” are you going to report on why Big Donavan Smith violently slapped the ball out of Winston’s hand right after he was sacked ? I know I can’t be the only one that saw that.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    DB

    There’s a lot of sh!t going on right now – that Joe ain’t speaking on.

    Granted some of sh!t is a spill over from last season.
    There’s a lot of key players that have lost complete faith in #3.
    This is just as bad as Jay Cutler’s last season with the Bears.

    Guys just don’t want to run routes or listen to Kat anymore.
    It’s really that simple – can you blame them though?

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    **Guys just don’t wanna run routes or listen to this Kat anymore.

  19. lambchop Says:

    @DB55,

    Tempers flare on the field. I wouldn’t read into it too much. But, I’m sure Mike has thought at times that he wish he had a better QB or at the very least a better OC.

  20. Joe Says:

    Hey joe” are you going to report on why Big Donavan Smith violently slapped the ball out of Winston’s hand right after he was sacked ? I know I can’t be the only one that saw that.

    Joe can’t report on something he has no idea about.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

    Got tickled yesterday when one of the announcers noted that Leftwich had said Winston reminded him a lot of himself when he played. I still remember 2009 when Byron was our QB … started 3 games & went 0-3 throwing for 54%.

    Yup, lots of similarities there, EXCEPT for one thing. Byron started the first 3 games of the season that year for Raheem, but after he went 0-3 Raheem replaced him … with Josh Johnson. Bucs continued to lose until Johnson was replaced … By Rookie Josh Freeman. Bucs went on to win 3 of the last 8 games that season, then finished 10-6 the next year. Of course, right after that they neutered Freeman … and he responded in-kind.

  22. Pewter power Says:

    That’s what you get for resigning bad players you are supposed to be stuck with them. Expect the line to suck another 2-3 years and oh yea these fans want you to put a rookie quarterback behind that garbage with zero run game.

  23. Hodad Says:

    Find a coach who runs a quick passing game, and let him draft his QB. Then we won’t be talking about Smith as much.

  24. Bobby M. Says:

    The entire line is adequate…..good enough to be avg….with a top tier QB they would look much better. Put Brees back there, a guy who dissects a defense with high IQ, quick decisions and a quick release….the Bucs line would be considered good enough.

    But with Winston…his reads are a tad slower then most, his release is a tad slower then most and he just holds the ball too long at times….Blocking is a two way street, those guys need the QB to make them look good at times too and that is never happening with Winston. They are having to block for 4 or 5 seconds while he waits, then shuffles, then runs, then launches….Its bound to create breakdowns and penalties for the linemen. I’ve said from day one….Licht didn’t build this team properly for Winston. He’s an inconsistent QB…..He has to have maximum consistency in front of him. Instead of Hargreaves, Aguayo, even Howard, Spence…..all those premium picks should have been going to building a ridiculous line and running game. Then you MIGHT see a few less turnovers….but we put mediocre in front of him and shined it up with over priced contracts thinking that would make it top tier. Its like putting credit swaps on junk debt and thinking its AAA paper.

  25. jjbucfan Says:

    Bobby, I agree except 2 things- the first is Bruce runs a 4 deep offense just like Koetter. There are no shallow crosses, the RB stays in to block and most of the time so does the tight end. The second is that by the time Jameis hits the top of his drop, he has someone in his face from either the LT, Rt or occasionally up the middle. I’m not saying JW isn’t holding the ball too long, I’m saying he HAS to hold the ball that long. Watch the pick 6 again. Watch Evans run a crappy looping route and doesn’t even turn his head by the time the DB catches the ball. That was a huge play in the game that Evans looked like he took off. There is not much to like about this team, except maybe we have a kicker and a NT and our 2 LBs look good. Our WRs are great but the best still drops huge first down passes and takes plays off. Also, we have been playing the wrong TE all year. JMO of course.

  26. gotbbucs Says:

    Smith isnt very good, and Dotson should have been replaced three years ago, but when you drop your QB back 51 times and run the ball 6 times, guess what, your QB is going to get killed.
    You cant be that screwed up in your run/pass ratio. Sluggo being our OC is an absolute slap in the face.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Proudbucsfan Says
    “Hey joe” are you going to report on why Big Donavan Smith violently slapped the ball out of Winston’s hand right after he was sacked ? I know I can’t be the only one that saw that.”

    Probably because it did not happen?

    The only ball slap I saw was Mike doing it to an opponent after a play, and I was surprised we didn’t get a penalty for it.

    You sure you didn’t misread things?

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Btw, I tried to tell everyone that Arians ran a vertical offense and would not focus on the run…before the season started.

  29. Easy Says:

    Winston said something to Smith is why he slapped the ball outta his hands.

  30. Mikadeemas Says:

    Oh it DID happen! D Smith helped JW3 up, then slapped the ball out of JW’s hand!!

  31. Mikadeemas Says:

    I guess Joe needs to to watch the All 22!

  32. WyldKat Says:

    I was wishing they’d replay it so I could make sure it happened. It looked like it wasn’t an accident, but would be so weird…

  33. Allbuccedup Says:

    Is this the no risk it no biscuit offense?

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    proudbuc

    i saw it too!!!!!

    imo, he slapped the ball out because JW either took too long to throw the ball or he was just frustrated with getting beat by jordan or davenport again….

    i saw it tho….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  35. bucsfan561 Says:

    That’s the problem… this guy gets beat over 50% of the time and we give him a pat on the back for effort lol he never wants to get dirty imo he seems more concerned with how clean his jersey and shoes are than his actual play.. he needs to be challenged mentally and physically lol same body since college and tbh the same exact results.. Why did we over pay?? we cant get a decent 3 seconds from him.

  36. 2020 What is the bucs future plan? Says:

    TEAM GLAZER NEEDS TO WAKE fUDGE UP! tHEY HAVE BEEN BAMBOOZELED AGAIN

  37. Danny Says:

    Smith is an average LT. He’s fine.

    Dotson is well past his prime, it’s embarrassing the other option is Josh Wells.

  38. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Donovan Smith, after being ridiculed in the offseason by Cam Jordan, letting Cam come into HIS F’ing house, and taking his lunch money.

    Donovan apparently has no pride, and looked like a tub of lard on Sunday. His effort was pathetic.

  39. Tony LA Says:

    I have to disagree.
    I’ve written on these comment sections dozens of times that as long as Smith is the Bucs LT they will be a bad offensive line and a mediocre team at best.

    That has now been the case for years. He gave up 4 sack worthy pressures yesterday.

    No one is saying he is putrid. But he is not a top 16-20 left tackle in the NFL and that makes him subpar.

    My hunch is that he would be pretty solid to very good at guard on the opposite side of Marpet.

    Something had to change. Yesterday – and this is not exaggeration – the Bucs looked like the worst OL in the league.

  40. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Tony LA Says:
    “Something had to change. Yesterday – and this is not exaggeration – the Bucs looked like the worst OL in the league.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    I agree completely. And yet Bruce said after the game, “I didn’t think the OL played poorly.”
    WTF?????? — I really like Bruce. But that comment really baffled & frankly scared me.
  41. unbelievable Says:
    Yeah you’re right, he only got Jameis pancaked 2 or 3 times yesterday instead of the normal 4 – 6 times.
    Way to go D Smith! Congrats buddy, you really are earning that money!
  42. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:
    He slapped it alright. Looked more like he was ticked at getting whooped (and took his frustration out on the nearest thing at hand, the ball) than anything directed at QB
  43. jjbucfan Says:
    Bonzai- I will give you kudos- I was about to comment that someone on here warned us that Arians offense was exactly the same as Koetter with the 4 verts. I could not remember who it was so I let it go. You Sir or Madame were absolutely correct. JW3 is running for his life and the receivers haven’t even hit their breaks yet. Ridiculous!!
  44. It’s rebuilding TIME! Says:
    Get rid of Donovan Smith! He is straight garbage and way over paid, idk what the organization seen in him last year. He’s straight trash and the way he knocked the ball out of Winston’s hand after he couldn’t block Jordan . Idk but these BUCS make the same mistake like if they have ELITE players they want to pay them more money, they made a big mistake with this guy . The Bucs need to go heavy in the draft with OL . I blame the OL for Winston’s garbage game .
  45. TOM Says:
    D. Smith is nothing but a over paid lazy ass. He was that way in college & still is. He got beat more than once yesterday but thats his MO.
  46. whaaatttsss uuuup Says:
    did anyone else notice Donovan smack the ball out of Winston hands after one sack?!? i believe he was yelling at him to throw the dang ball!!!….. if you can go back and look at it it was after halftime and it looked like Winston got up to get in Donovan face and Donovan smacked the ball out of his hands!!…. Winston commands respect from NOBODY!!!! i think the main thing wrong with the team is they are sick of Winston throwing it to the other team!!! look how alive they looked and how good they blocked when fitz was playing good those first 3 games!! .. soon as Winston was back in the line up everyone looked flat!!!….. the leader sucks and they all know he is going to throw it to the other team when it matters the most anyway … how do you get motivated like that
  47. lowercaseg Says:
    being mediocre is what we do best
