“You Can Internally Force The Issue With Those Guys”

October 18th, 2019

Cuts matter, says one prominent former Buccaneer.

Bucs fans have all heard about Bucco Bruce Arians’ famous accountability charts and accountability doctrine in various forms. It’s real and it sounds great, but it’s all spineless unless players see other players paying the ultimate price: getting cut or benched for poor play.

Big money starters aren’t going to get benched, noted ex-Bucs tight end Anthony Becht this week on WDAE-AM, but when the lesser guys like Bobo Wilson and Devante Bond are released in mid-October, it gets the attention of the team and can prove to be a motivator.

“You can internally force the issue with those [starters],” Becht said, and swift roster changes are a driving force for that.

“There’s going to be some other players in that situation moving forward,” Becht added. “That mentality has to be a part of your culture. And Bruce Arians, I think with those moves, is starting show that this is part of the culture, that you’re on blast week in and week out.”

Great point by Becht. Arians is six weeks into his regime. Now is the time to force players to understand the standards: if you suck and you’re not a key player, and you have no trade value, then that should be the end of the line.

Still a little puzzled with the Bond cut. He seemed like a solid backup, but must have been something going on?

  2. CalBucsFan Says:

Really? Cutting 3rd stringers MOTIVATES 1st stringers? Sounds like an excuse, this is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard from a former Buc player in a while.

  3. Jmarkbuc Says:

If the last paragraph is true, why is Vern still here?

  4. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

Wow really? So if your a high paid player your good to go no matter what? Thats not the way to change a losing culture. Its when you show players no matter how much you get paid if you suck year in and year out your gone, not let them hang around and drag the Bucs down just because you dont want draft egg on your face. Take a hint guys Desean was smart he left and not even the great Arians could make him stay, alot of our past players went to other teams and have done well (Blunt,Talib Doug Williams ect.) dont you think players (Mike Evans) look at them and say “that could be me I could be on a winning team”

  5. 813bucboi Says:

    we’ll see what happens….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  6. TampaTown Says:

I thought Bond was a solid backup. Did he possibly fail a PED test that we don’t know about yet?

  7. Lamarcus Says:

    Vh3

    Not a starter check

    Not a key player check

    Vh3 is next…..check

  8. Beligerentbuc Says:

We need to ship Mike Evans and his fat salary for a haul of picks.

It would benefit both parties…Would we get the same for his the Giants got for OBJ???

  9. tmaxcon Says:

cutting xfl players to motivate other xfl players… got it… basement title streak still alive….

  10. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Doesn’t that philosophy start at the top of the 53 man roster????
    Vern

  11. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“When does the local Tampa bay Bucs high school media reporters ask BA if Leftfoot will be replaced as playcaller?

Both Tenn and Sea have good defenses

Going to be interesting when our QB coach intern sh!ts the bed

It maybe puny but my Dad has balls”

  12. Joe Says:

If the last paragraph is true, why is Vern still here?

Joe mentioned why early in the story.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Difficult rationale to swallow. Every member of this 53-man team has worked their tails off to make the roster, starting way back in grade school for many if not most. They KNOW what’s on the line every year … THEIR CAREER; their livelihood.

Fact of the matter is some simply don’t have enough talent. Bobo didn’t go out and purposely drop those 2 punts. ME13 didn’t purposely drop that TD pass. Cutting Devante Bond had ZERO effect on either situation. Obvious to me that BA didn’t see Bond, Bobo or Bucannon in our plans going forward, so he cut them to make room for some other ‘candidates’. It’s the YEAR OF EXPERIMENTATION and ASSESSMENT. And oh ya, VHIII will stick to the end of the year for 2 reasons: (1) Dead Cap of $4.5 mil this year; (2) Bucs don’t have anyone waiting in the wings who’s better. Thanks again Jason.

  14. Pewter power Says:

I believe the issue with the bucs has everything to do with losing. You have the studs and big money guys literally half-arsing it because they are tired of losing and carrying garbage players who cant make the leap. How many of out good players will want to sign an extension this offseason
continue losing? Bucs aren’t the only ones who will pay especially with our salary cap issue. I think a lot of the players on our roster now wish they could go the Adam Humphries/ Kwon route

  15. JWilBuc Says:

Bond suspended 4 games for testing positive for PEDs per Jenna Line. Makes sense now.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You know, I just recalled that on Joe’s very first Peterson trade article about a month or so back, I pointed out that he wasn’t available for trade. I should have bookmarked it.

If the last paragraph is true, why is Vern still here?

Because “I’ll tolerate you until I can replace you.” Right now there is simply no one else out there.

  19. Bojim Says:

BA needs to go into the locker room and crack some heads. “What do you not understand about playing in the NFL?”

  20. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

I finally watch just the first half of that game n r u f’n serious 3 false starts 1st one on two linemen setting up a free kick at the end of a half. One int was on winston but I also seen a throw to Godwin that was amazing with hardly any witnesses dow n the bomb to Evan’s and he drops it. Ppl saying he looks mad n wants to leave no he was pissed at the performance of the entire team including him. One of the 2 fumbles in first half (back to back) was on winston even though both times the pressure was almost instant. All of that in the first half was ridiculous. The oline was the main reason n understandably with 2 backups. Everyone got flustered and it snowballed. Maybe this will get players to try harder no matter what, but the bottom line without seeing second half yet. This sh!tshow is on all the players not just Winston or the oline for that matter but the oline owns a hefty amount of the blame. They made the snowball n started rolling it down the mountain n the rest of the team said here let us help get it going 🤦‍♂️💯 SMMFH
I hope they get their sh!t together after the biweek 🙏
