“Superstardom”

October 18th, 2019

Stud.

Is Bucs receiver Chris Godwin rising to the level of “superstardom?” Joe isn’t sure but one national writer thinks so.

Danny Kelly of The Ringer decided to look at NFL players having breakout years. He picked a few who he believes will enter the realm of NFL superstars based on their first big-time seasons in the league.

Kelly begins with the Bucs’ third-year receiver.

WR Chris Godwin, Buccaneers
The receiver position in particular is crowded at the top, loaded with superstars like Odell Beckham Jr., DeAndre Hopkins, Michael Thomas, Davante Adams, Keenan Allen, and Julio Jones. And while Godwin came into this season generating plenty of hype as one of the most exciting no. 2 options in the league, he was often overshadowed by another top name at the position, his teammate Mike Evans. …

Godwin can do it all for the Buccaneers, lining up all over the formation to take the top off defenses on one play and grab a short pass and pick up yards after the catch on the next. Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston—who’s not exactly known for mistake-free efficiency—has a near-perfect passer rating of 148.6 when targeting Godwin this year. The third-year pro out of Penn State has turned a whopping 38 of his 43 catches into first downs. Oh, and he has about as reliable hands as they come, with just one dropped pass this year. Godwin’s meteoric rise is no fluke; he’s here to stay.

Kelly went on to add that Godwin is the Bucs’ new “go-to” guy.

Bucs fans aren’t really surprised Godwin’s success. He put a lot of tape out there that suggested if he had a chance to play full-time he could blow up.

Now Joe isn’t exactly enamored with how Bucco Bruce Arians uses Godwin in the slot. With Breshad Perriman hurt and stinking the joint up when he is on the field, Joe would have Godwin line up wide and put O.J. Howard at the slot (look how Andy Reid used Travis Kelce Thursday night).

But how can one argue with success (unless it comes from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston– that’s when people lose their damn minds)?

Receiver is one of the few positions the Bucs don’t have to worry about for some time.

    Better than Mike Evans

But Mike Evans #2 Wide Receiver sounds pretty good to me.

  2. Colorado Says:

“Some time” being 2 years when Godwin leaves us to go to a contender and we’re stuck with the dynamic one-two punch of Mike Evans and Scotty Miller.

  3. Miller5252 Says:

Anyone that watches the Bucs all the time knew Godwin was going to be a hell of a player. From year one he was putting film out there that he’s a good wife out. I think Godwin would find it a lot harder to produce if Evans wasn’t out there….. kinda like Ju Ju this year with Brown gone. Godwin will be good no matter what role you put him in….. he’s one of those players that work all the time.

I think the big question is Mike Evans. Watching him this year he doesn’t seem to like his role or playing for the Bucs anymore. Just the way he looks mad on the field I wouldn’t doubt he’s asked to be traded or will ask if the Bucs completely fail here in the next few games. I really hope I’m wrong…. but everything I keep seeing on Evans, it seems like he’s not near as happy as he once was.

  4. Sharthappens Says:

He is a hell of a blocker for a receiver. Receiver wise, he is picking up a lot of balls due to Mike Evans double coverage. I wish our O-Line would be half as tough as Godwin

  5. Joe Says:

    Colorado:

If this team doesn’t turn things around in two years and the Bucs have a slug at quarterback, it would not shock Joe at all if Evans demands a trade.

  6. DB55 Says:

Too bad he doesn’t have a quarterback who can hit him in stride or throw him the ball accurately.

  7. lambchop Says:

And yet, the Bucs keep trying out WRs. It’s ludicrous. Just put Justin Watson in the damn game. He’ll be ok as the third.

  8. Pewter power Says:

Gotta put up mike Evan’s numbers more than 6 games to take his place. People are so easily swayed. Damn can he do what mike evans has done every single year in the league for at least one year before we go trying to replace evans as number one.

  9. July Joe Says:

    JAMEIS WINSTON = KING MAKER

Kelvin Benjamin: Jameis made him a star in college and got him drafted in the 1st round … currently out of the NFL

Rashaad Green: Jameis made him a star in college and got him drafted … currently out of the NFL

Adam Humphries: Undrfated rookie that Jameis turned into a stud and got PAID … currently putting up PATHETIC numbers in Tennessee

Cam Brate: Undrafted rookie that Jameis turned into a stud and got PAID

Chris Godwin: 3rd rounder that Jameis is turning into a SUPERSTAR who will get PAID

But yeah, Jameis himself is sooooo terrible and doesn’t deserve to get paid more than a Tampa bus driver and the Bucs would be better just moving on from him after this year and handing the team over to a rookie draft pick, so that both Mike Evans and Godwin can be furious and demanding a trade come week 4 next season!

    IDIOT FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

He is a great baller but we said the same thing about Evans a few years back
remember? Frustration will get to him to when he has to catch Winstons suicide passes.

  11. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

July Joe, you completely lost any credibility with this statement (copy/pasted here)…”but turnovers are less important than….”

    It’s ALL about turnovers buddy.

  12. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

And Joe asked the perfect question, and the answer is obvious to all…..you can sign long term, either Godwin or America’s Grop…..errr Quarterback.

  13. 813bucboi Says:

    2years….lol…

mike looks like he wants a trade now….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. Bird Says:

    July joe is rodd munch

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Just noticed something interesting Joe about Godwin & ME13. They BOTH have exactly the same number of targets this year: 55 through 6 games. And yet the RESULTS are noticeably different.

    Godwin has caught 43 of those 55 balls thrown to him (78.2%) for 662 yds & 6 TDs. He’s averaging a tad over 110 YPG … 12.0 yds/target & 15.4 yds/catch. WOW!

    Mike Evans has caught only 27 of those 55 balls thrown to him (49.1%) for 464 yds & 4 TDs. He’s averaging a tad over 77 YPG … 8.4 yds/target but 17.2 yds/catch.

Last year the two of them had almost identical catch percentages: 62.1% & 62.3%. And yet THIS YEAR Chris is catch % is almost 30 percentage points HIGHER. ME13 also seems ‘distracted’ or something in games. Starting to wonder if there might be something going on there that we don’t know about.

  16. July Joe Says:

    @Morgus,

No, you already lost credibility long ago and this recent post just exposes how ignorant of QB history you are yet again, as EVERY WEEK multiple QBs that have more TOs than the opposing team’s QB still earn TEAM wins,

Go check the game logs from Carson Palmer’s first year with Arians … he had a THREE and a FOUR interception game … the Cardinals TEAM won both games.

YOU ARE SOOOOO IGNORANT OF QB HISTORY IT’S SCARY!!!!!!!!!!

  17. H8JWLVEBUCS Says:

    @813bucboi:

AGREED, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICE THAT. FACE OF FRUSTRATION

  18. Dewey Selmon Says:

If Evans or Godwin go down for any length of time we could be doomed. WR depth was a strong point until this year.

  19. July Joe Says:

^ Mike is mad at HIMSELF … Godwin has completely outplayed him this year and is the one having the historic season, even though Mike has just as many targets … and Godwin didn’t DROP a perfect deep-ball that would have resulted in a 74 yard TD … or act like a goof in the Rams game … or get called out by Arians for getting abused by little James Bradberry on JW’s first INT of the Panthers game (which Arians said was on Evans).

Mike knows that the way things are going, when Godwin’s time comes for a new contract, the team may decide they can only afford one mega-paid WR and they could keep Godwin and DUMP Mike … he needs to start playing up to his ability. Mike’s a monster but he’s been disappointing in spots this season.

But no, unlike the JW-bashers I’m not going to pick on Mike’s flaws and lapses and then say he sucks and needs to be traded, etc … Mike, like JW, has HOF talent and I hope he plays his entire career in Tampa Bay!!!!!!

  20. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

JulyJoe….your use of upper case does not enhance your hollow screams. Again, you CLEARLY (yes, I used upper case, so perhaps it will get through your thick skull) stated that turnovers are less important than (fill in the blank). Which is pure idiocy. But, carry on with your unabashed love of sniffing the crotchgrabbers’ jock.

  21. PC Says:

Godwin and Evans are being wasted on this team.

  22. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

“But turnovers by the quarterback aren’t that important”

  23. Dewey Selmon Says:

Hey Defense, I think Evans numbers are lower due to being covered from opposing teams #1 db covering him and being doubled with a safety. Godwin is reaping the rewards. lol

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

Yep, all because of the “King Maker”! LOL!
Unfortunately for you July Joe, some of us watch college football and have Penn State alum in the family. Smart football fans predicted Godwin’s success before a single pass was thrown from Jameis.
KB was a stud coming out of college, virtually uncoverable. Caught 73 passes and 1,000+ yards from a “run first” QB named Newton. Couldn’t put down the Twinkies or stay in shape.
Rashad Green, Cam Brate, and Adam Humphries have never been mentioned, or described as “studs” at any point in their careers
Your hyperbole is bordering on psychosis!
It’s a TEAM game so no, it’s not all about the QB, GOOD or BAD!

  25. July Joe Says:

^ And you IGNORE the facts I post because you can’t disprove them, so you just sling insults.

There is a lot of great research out there about just how “over-rated” turnovers are. Do some homework and look it up for yourself.

Again, just explain to me how, if turnovers are the be-all & end-all of football, why EVERY SINGLE week there are teams who WIN games when they turn the ball over more than the other team?

Explain to me how Carson Palmer won a game in which he threw 4 INTs and played terrible (52% comp rate, under 180 yards)?

YOU ARE SO IGNORANT OF QB HISTORY IT’S SCARY … YET YOU ACTUALLY THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT … WHICH IS EVEN SCARIER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

I will simply allow JulyJoe’s own words speak for themselves. IN UPPER CASE!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!! America’s Grop…..errr, Quarterback’s turnovers were not the reason for the loss. Got it. JulyJoe, thank you for gracing us with your incalculable and unassailable wisdom. We collectively appreciate it.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

    Here you go July Joe:

Teams with the highest # of turnovers for 2019:
    NYG 15
    Cleveland 14
    TB 13
    LA Rams 12
    5 teams tied with 11.

Of these 9 teams, 2 have winning records, one is 3-3. Objectively, 6 of 9 teams have LOSING records. MATHEMATICALLY, two-thirds of teams with the highest number of turnovers have LOSING records. For the fraction-impaired that’s roughly 67%. Of the four HIGHEST, only one team is .500.
    Turnovers MATTER!

  28. July Joe Says:

^ You guys are such goobers … you refuse to answer any question I ask or deal with anything I post as you can’t, so you just mention other stuff or sling insults.

OF COURSE Turnovers matter, so do field goals missed, so does yards per carry in your run game, so does sacks allowed, so does dropping 74 yard TD passes that are perfectly throw, etc., etc., etc.,.

The FACT remains that on a game by game basis, EVERY WEEK there are TEAMS that win the game who have more turnovers than the LOSING team … the game of football is NOT “all about turnovers” by any stretch of the imagination.

AND, even if Winston turned into a strictly game-manager and had ZERO turnovers the rest of the year, the TEAM would still lose more games than it wins as they can’t stop anyone from scoring and ALL of you Winston bashers would STILL demand the franchise move on from Winston.

    THAT is the point.

  29. July Joe Says:

The FACT is that none of you Jameis-bashers care about turnovers, or missed throws, or sacks taken, or anything else … you simply want Jameis gone.

If the Bucs franchised Jameis and then traded him on Draft night for the rights to Joe Burrow and Burrow put up the EXACT SAME stats and games Jameis did, NONE of you would want Burrow run out of town.

    THAT is the point.

This isn’t about turnovers … it’s about Jameis.

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

July Joe- You asked for research, there it is, and I did it without insults.
Here is the statement you seem to want vindication on:

Yes, teams can win even if losing the turnover battle!

There. I hope that puts your rant to rest. Now, how often teams win when losing the turnover battle seems to be the issue that you are having trouble with.
Jameis turnovers are among the reasons that this team is losing. That is stone-cold fact! He is most certainly NOT the whole problem, but he is definitely PART of the problem.

    Now, about Chris Godwin….

  31. DB55 Says:

    July Joe

I for one would like to welcome you to this here corner of the inter web. You are appreciated. Most of us are either banned, under moderation or just tired of arguing with these yahoos.

Welcome my friend. Don’t hurt yourself.

  32. DB55 Says:

    Bucsfan

They lose even when he doesn’t turn the ball over. See saints game and Carolina bc they were a half yard from losing.

  33. July Joe Says:

    ^

OH GEE, look what else one can do when playing with “team stats”

Of the ELEVEN (same number you used) teams at the bottom of the RUSHING YARDS category, ONLY TWO (same number as your “stat”) have winning records and only one (same number as your stat) us .500 …

So, BY YOUR OWN LOGIC, team rushing yards are IDENTICAL IN IMPORTANCE to turnovers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And guess what “stat” is EVEN MORE IMPORTANT than turnovers or rush yards … defensive yards allowed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of the 11 worst teams in the NFL in defensive yards allowed only two have winning records and none have a .500 record.

Now, understand the FACT that Jameis’ Bucs TEAM find itself in BOTH the bottom 11 of rushing yards AND the bottom 11 of defensive yards allowed, and tell me WHY anyone would expect his TEAM to have a winning record when THE ONLY QB in THAT SITUATION in the entire NFL that has a winning record is the reigning MVP …. NOT ONE OTHER QB has a winning record in the same situation as Jameis is in, NOT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. July Joe Says:

^ AND if Matt Gay had just made his chip-shot FG against the Giants, the Bucs would be .500 and the ONLY TWO QBS in the entire NFL with both a bottom 11 defense in yards allowed AND bottom 11 run game, that have at least a .500 record would be the reigning NFL MVP … and … JAMEIS WINSTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU GUYS ARE SO IGNORANT IT IS SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

LOL! My own REASONABLE logic tells me that you just need to keep having this conversation with yourself bro!
Wow, just wow! Good luck little fella!

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- So, are you now going to debate whether or not teams that turn the ball over less have a higher chance of winning?
    #FACTS…….And I HATE hashtags!

  37. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

I just gotta keep telling myself “Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault…Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault…..Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….Jameis is Great and it’s not his fault….” Did I get that right JulyJoe?

  38. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Meanwhile….even JBF says he’s not sure Jameis would be acquired by any other team to be their starter. Which isn’t really startling. At all.

  39. July Joe Says:

HAHAHAHA, once again, none of you can disprove the points I’ve made so @Bucsfanman gives up with a mere insult and @Margus goes into full-blown baby mode … I love it!!!!!!

I PROVED using @Bucsfanman’s own logic that yards allowed by the defense is MORE IMPORTANT to success than turnovers … and he just slings an insult and runs away, HAHAHAHAHAHA.

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

Awwww! I’m glad you feel better now. You took a while!
You have proven nothing, only that you are incapable of OBJECTIVE reasoning.
Hey, whatever helps make you feel better!
BTW, “objective” is a three syllable word that means without bias.

  41. D1 Says:

Teams with a positive differential turnover margin in a given game win 70% of the time.

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

D1- You can’t reason with insanity.

  43. Jameishas2go Says:

Mike Evans contract is favorable to trade after next year. I would not be surprise to see Mike traded at that point. That money would then be allocated to Chris Godwin, with the hope that we have sorted out some of our other deficiencies on the offensive side of the ball(C, RT, Dynamic RB, QB).

  44. July Joe Says:

^ @Buscsfanman … I proved nothing? I literally used YOUR OWN LOGIC and destroyed you with it, and you can’t do anything but sling more insults and then run away from the truth, but hey, at least you’ve got other idiots to pat you on the back on this forum, HAHAHAHAHA.

You guys NEVER deal with the FACTS I post, you just whine, sling insults, pat each other on the back as if any of you have any clue what you’re talking about, and then actually think you accomplished something, other than merely making yourselves look like fools.

IT’S SCARY WHEN PEOPLE WHO ARE OBVIOUSLY IGNORANT ACTUALLY THINK THEY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT … just like going to the asylum and talking to guys who are sure they’re the King of England … that’s YOU GUYS in a nutshell.

  45. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Need a QB capable of fully taking advantage of the talented passing catching roster…..throw them open…throws with touch…throws on time…hit the in stride ( see the YAC Stats) …all the other stuff

  46. Jaywill Says:

July Joe Kansas City is 12th in scoring defense not bottom 5 that’s why Kansas City is winning. Use Facts that matter. Bucs defense is bottom 5 in scoring defense. Even Lovie had top 10 defense in yards but was 26th in points allowed.

  47. July Joe Says:

^ I agree with you … I simply used @Bucsfanman’s logic against himself to show him how stupid he was being.

  48. July Joe Says:

    @AlteredEgo,

Oh, you mean like the PERFECT 60 yard dime he threw to Evans that should have resulted in a 74 yard TD, but which Evans bobbled with crab hands?

Anyways, you can get what you want, an efficient, more accurate touch passer … that guy just likely won’t have JW’s arm strength or athleticism or escapeability in the pocket.

I get Bucs fans want the “perfect QB” but that guy doesn’t exist, and what they have in JW is a top 5 “talent” with an insane skill-set and some problem areas (like all other QBs) … deal with it and enjoy it.

It’s the same with every other position … do I wish we had Saquon? Yes. Can I still be happy with an enjoy the Rojo/Barber duo? Yes.

You don’t think the Bills wish they had Rodgers or Mahomes? Of course they do, but they have Josh Allen (who is not even close to as good a QB as Jameis is) and they’re sitting at 4-1 and rocking in Buffalo, because TEAMS win games.

  49. Bojim Says:

Give him another year or two then we’ll decide. Glad as hell that he’s a Buc.
