Patrick Peterson Update

October 18th, 2019

Status.

Arizona general manager Steve Keim has now gone on record to discuss Patrick Peterson’s status.

The stud Cardinals cornerback is coveted by a lot of Bucs fans who fall to their knees before going to bed each night begging the Almighty to tap Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to break down and make a move for a cornerback before the trade deadline on Oct. 29, so the Bucs can stay in the hunt for a wild card run.

The Bucs secondary is simply brutal for a third year in a row. As a result, the Bucs are dead-last in the NFL in passing yards allowed.

Joe doesn’t know of too many quarterbacks who can overcome such a rotten pass defense week after week.

In a season in which the NFC South, aside from New Orleans, is wide open to make a wild card run, the Bucs are lassoed by this pathetic pass defense, thus Bucs fans are begging Licht to make a move.

The prime target understandably, is Peterson, the stud corner with the Cardinals. But today, by way of Kevin Zimmerman of AZSports.com, Keim stated Peterson is not available.

Joe is just going to take Keim at his word here.

But Peterson isn’t the only cornerback in the NFL. Since the Bucs have the worst secondary, Joe is guessing there are 50 starting corners who could play better than Bucs starters.

Shoot, backups likely could do better.

If the Bucs are not going to go after an upgrade for the secondary in the next two weeks, they better be sellers and start stocking up on draft picks.

Translation: Start making offers. Jalen Ramsey got 2 first rounds and a fourth so you better be in that ballpark.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

i dont believe anything unless the agents comes out and says something…..

JAGS owner said he had a heart to heart meeting with ramsey and said, i think he’ll play…..

    he didnt and was traded….

when everyone is quite except for the owner, wheels are turning….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  3. PC Says:

If I were Licht, I would start selling for more picks. This team is not going anywhere.

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

We need that 1st round pick next year for a QB. Don’t mortgage the future. we’re not 1 player a way from the playoffs.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

trade OJ to the redskins for quinton dunbar and a 4th round pick….they just put j.reed on IR(again)…

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/10/17/receiver-college-redskins-quinton-dunbar-has-become-one-nfls-top-cornerbacks/

then flip that pick and a 2nd to the JAGS for yannick…..

you fix the secondary and pass rush….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

Tanking is for losers. What the Miami Dolphins are doing is setting their franchise back decades.

I’m dreading the week 17 game where the Joes actively want the Bucs to purposely lose a “meaningless” game in order to go from picking 7th in the draft to 6th. Hooray! That’s just what the Bucs need more losing culture. Doesn’t matter where you pick if Jason Licht is drafting.

  7. Lubby Smith Says:

Jason Licht the type of guy to trade for a player who was great while using PEDs, got suspended for using PEDs, and now probably sucks without those PEDs.

But, on the plus side, we would have fewer draft picks for Jason Licht to screw up.

  8. Beligerentbuc Says:

Pass…why mortgage the future on a guy coming back from a 6 game suspension. One injury away from a investment blow up.

Whats the upside, we pay him an outrageous salary for a shut down corner and lose the ability to fix the trenches.

Can PP cover Julio or Michale Thomas, for 10seconds? Or can Jameis or a rookie qb pass the ball in under 1.2seconds, down the field?

Let our guys develop in the system…somethings gotta stick with all this rookie DBs back there…YES it’s suppose to be painful to watch.

We’re Bucs fans and we love pain! Go Bucs!

  9. Beligerentbuc Says:

    Go get Trent Williams

The Oline is in desperate need…cant wait for JPP to run wild!

  10. Allbuccedup Says:

Trade OJ Howard and VH3 for Patrick Peterson. If they would consider it, two former first round picks for one.

  11. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Licht Weight and Stevie Kegger Kiem going mano y mano in a Vero Beach Holiday Inn hotel room in a game of quarters oughta get something done.

  12. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs offering top level draft picks for anybody would be premium picks. So don’t do it.

  13. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “Lol bucfan IQ

Teams sell valuable players for draft capital to move up to get 1 position in the coming draft

Arizona has drafted their hopeful franchise QB last year

Now they are in the building stage acquiring young players

    Arizona sellers? They are buyers

They want Godwin for 1st round lol

Where is Bucs status, future building prospects?

It is a clusterfvk with no direction

We are a mouse going around and around on the hamster wheel

MIAMI IS 25X BETTER SITUATION THAN OUR BUCSTER FIRE”

Trade OJ Howard and VH3 for Patrick Peterson. If they would consider it, two former first round picks for one.

peterson as a first round pick has performed those two picks you are offering are pure garbage that have accomplished absolutely nothing in the nfl. vh3bust is a convenience clerk and oj howard is a soft little man that needs to cuddle on the couch and play video games. you people have no concept of value… so at the end of the day you are offering up mamma’s boy and a convenience store clerk for a world class athlete… you will have plenty of takers lined up i am sure….

  15. ITS ABOUT TIME !! Says:

why trade…. lickted doesnt know how to evaluate talent so whats the difference…

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Bucs fan 37 is right do not trade premium picks for anyone.

The Bucs offering top level draft picks for anybody would be premium picks. So don’t do it.

why???? it’s not like the draft picks work out for the bucs… not one first round pick since sapp worth a crap…. period…. bucs can’t draft bucs… cant attract free agents… and bucs have no players tradable with the exception of godwin so basically you are saying keep doing the same so the basement title streak stays alive.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

“Joe doesn’t know of too many quarterbacks who can overcome such a rotten pass defense week after week.”

You’ve completely outdone yourself Joe. So ‘poor Jameis’ would be great if not for the rotten pass defense week after week? THAT’S a load of horsepuckey. Just another diversionary EXCUSE.

If anything, the Bucs’ defense & Secondary should be irate at the number of incredibly bad situations that Jameis (and our illustrious #4 offense) have put THEM in this season. And oh ya, in years past. This ‘rotten’ defense has bailed his ass out time & time again. A total of TWELVE turnovers (plus 1 thanks to a BoBo Bobble on S/Ts) in just 6 games? SERIOUSLY? And THREE of those TOs were Pick-6s … that really helped. And of the other TEN TOs, about half of them resulted in short fields for our opponents, and albeit guaranteed them points … POINTS that our ‘rotten’ defense has had to eat.

In our 6 games, Bucs’ offense has had the ball for 76 drives. Here’s how ‘poor Jameis’ and our #4-ranked offense has performed in those 76 drives (what those drives resulted in):

    o Punts – 26 … 34.2%.
    o Out on Downs – 6 … 7.9%
    o INT – 10 … 13.2%
    o Fumble – 2 … 2.6%
    o Safety – 1 … 1.3%
    o Missed FG – 2 … 2.6%
    o FG – 11 … 14.5%
    o TD – 18 … 23.7%

Over 42% of those drives resulted in either a PUNT or OUT ON DOWNs. Another 20% of those drives resulted in either a turnover, a safety or a missed FG. The remaining 38% … 29 drives … resulted in POINTS SCORED, either FG (11) or TD (18).

But look even deeper. On 11 of those 76 drives (1 in every 7 drives), the offense got the ball as a result of our ‘rotten’ defense forcing a turnover and handing them the ball back, often with a very favorable short field.

So please, stop with the ‘poor Jameis’ act Joe. Most JBFers saw through that EXCUSE a long time ago. For once evaluate Jameis on HIS PERFORMANCE, and without excuses. Our Bucs’ defense had a monumental task in front of it WITHOUT Jameis’ turnovers & other faux pas … new coaching staff, new defensive scheme, LOTS of new players including quite a few rookies & 1st year players in starting roles. And they did it all on HALF the cost of our offense. They’ll improve. The question is … WILL JAMEIS AND THIS OFFENSE?

  19. 813bucboi Says:

trade OJ or brate to the redskins for q.dunbar and a 5th round pick…..they just put j.reed on IR again….

then flip that 5th round pick and a 2nd for yannick….

    pass rush and secondary fixed….

then we would only have to worry about the oline and QB…lol…
    GO BUCS!!!!!

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    joe

now you want to release me from moderation….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  21. Keke Says:

Should I really be happy that I don’t have to watch the Bucs play this weekend.

  22. Hodad Says:

The wild card spot might be wide open for some teams, but not the Bucs Joe, stop the nonsense. The best corner in the world can’t cover the whole field, and can’t keep Jameis from losing the ball seven times in one game. Let that sink in, 7 times, 5 picks, 2 fumbles, the 85 Bears defense would have a hard time winning a game like that. This team is going nowhere. Our QB is a turnover machine, our GM keeps drafting DB’s who are slow, and can’t cover, neglecting both lines of scrimmage. Our HC came out of a retirement home, ownership is clueless, I can go on but what’s the point. If your wet dream over Peterson helps you to cope Joe that’s fine, but trading for him won’t turn this team into a playoff contender.

  23. LongSeason Says:

Try other teams Taxi Squad secondary players. They would be better ‘n a Buc starting DB any day.

  24. Ben real Says:

And if they do trade him why trade him to the Bucs before they play each other … not happening

  25. Ben real Says:

Lol haven’t the Bucs learned from drafting QBs in the 1st round? Please

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

Tmaxcon your right they probably would not fall for that logic.

  27. DBS Says:

“Tanking is for losers”. Yes it is. We did that. Got Jameis and we are Still Losers.

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

Tmaxcon your right no one in their right mind would go for that trade.

  29. Anonymous Says:

It would be great to trade Winston to KC to spell Mahomes in return for a 2nd round pick. Also, Evans will be asking for trade by the end of the year and be the topic of off season drama. So move him now. Next years 2nd and 1st round pick from someone. Plenty to move up and grab a real QB that can be developed.

  30. Dlavid Says:

defense Rules…. Ditto ! Excellent retort ! Here here….! Game over ! I was 100% JW guy from the start and admittedly an FSU fan . He has ruined this team !

  31. JimmyJack Says:

Trading for a CB is OK by me but for where this team is we need a long-term answer. Not Patrick P for only one year then back to square1.

If you can get him for cheap then fine. But listen to these comments. These are not the words of a GM likely to hand away a ProBowler cheap. If he is willing to trade Peterson he will want a big price & the team he will find to pay it will be a team that thinks they are a CB away from playoff contention. Doubt the Bucs think they are that team.

If we are trading I want long-term fits. Not rentals.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

    SuperBowl contention***” I meant

  33. JimmyJack Says:

DR another stat you could have used which is a huge factor to look at in mine opinion is % of drives that result in 3and outs.

They are the equivalent as strikeouts in baseball & they really handcuff the defense when they pile up in a game.

  34. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Why waste a pick? You really think that would matter? What a joke!!

  35. Greg Says:

This concept is hilarious! You people really want Jason like to sacrifice future first round picks for a guy who is close to 30? Do you really think we’re one player away? A couple years ago absolutely. But seriously Joe was just hoping to get rid of that first round picks so we don’t draft another quarterback and replace his boo!

  36. Jim Says:

Long term solution? Cue in “Suicide is Painless” from MASH…

  37. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Sell…..this team is done this year. Stockpile draft picks and fire Licht My Balls who put us in salary cap hell, can’t draft worth a crap and can’t sign free agents worth a Licht either!

  38. Buc believer Says:

Trust Licht with MORE draft picks???? That is like trusting Rosanne Barr or Mamma June to just eat a salad at the all you can eat buffet.

  39. Joe in Michigan Says:

Some of the Bucs fans crack me up, “Bucs are horrible in the draft!!” (which is true), also Bucs fans “We need to stockpile as many draft picks as we can.” (a good philosophy if your team was actually good at drafting players).

  40. stpetebucsfan Says:

Here is my problem…perhaps some of you share it.

As much as I love Patrick Peterson I just don’t see making a major move right now.

I honestly do not know what we actually have. Injuries, youth, suspensions, new coaches, hard to know. We have lots of bubble players that could either develop into solid to good NFL players or bust out…lots of players who are just coming into their own like Vea and Godwin. This team has talent but I’m not really sure if all the pieces fit.

One major question. Who is going to play QB. Place all our chips on JW? Or spend more on a great team and hope we can find a young athlete to manage the offense.

  41. gotbbucs Says:

How many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks have they spent on defensive backs in the last three years? They aren’t going to spend future premium picks on an expensive vet. That would completely undermine their own scouting department.
Move on from this ridiculous idea.

  42. Rayjay1122 Says:

Peterson would not fix our secondary. He can’t cover every receiver or TE our defense faces at once because he would get no help from the slop we currently have on this roster.

  43. firethecannons Says:

I live out here in Phoenix valley, they got Steve Keim on the Doug and Wolfe show every week, I heard him say it multiple times, he is not trading Pat P as it is a very difficult position to fill with talent, he is at his prime, draft picks or two are only maybe’s, Pat P cant wait to get back on the field.

Wish I gave a shat about the Cardinals but for some reason I like the Bucs and could care less bout the Cards. Thx to Jameis I got into the NFL and Bucs as I am an FSU alumni. Honestly I hope we do NOT resign Jameis, Bucs need the cap space and there are better options out there. I care about the Bucs now, not Jameis so much, too many games like we had last week against the Panthers burned me out on him. Going to watch LSU game tomorrow. Hope our team sells donovan lazy ass smith for a 1st round or second round pick. We need a new left and right tackle. We need to BUY a couple cornerbacks-not allowed to waste draft picks on anymore corners-Bucs cant pick a decent corner for anything.

  44. cmurda Says:

I would trade away our entire draft. Shoot, what’s to lose? Need we revisit the 2016 Bucs Draft? The only player from that draft that is playing for the team is Ryan Smith…..on special teams. VH3 is playing technically but he’s not really playing if you know what I mean. For a guy we know is a stud in the secondary, we should be willing to give up anything but our #1 pick. We may need that for a QB.

  45. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

We ain’t doing crap for the trade deadline folks just hope the players get over the learning curve. !!!

  46. Jean Lafitte Says:

This would probably be the same stance that Licht would take with Shaq Barrett.

  47. Casey Says:

I think we need to try to get drake from Miami. I bet we could get him for a 5th. He automatically becomes our starter.

  48. BigHog Says:

Let these guys we have now develop i.e. MOUNT V was viewed by many here as a bust but now he is becoming a FORCE TO DEAL WITH! KEEP WORKING HARD AND DON’T GIVE AWAY THE FUTURE!!! GO FAMOUS GO MOUNT V KEEP GRINDING CORNER BACKS!!

  49. Proudbucsfan Says:

I’ve said this before, we should trade OJ Howard and a second rd pick to the redskins for Trent Williams. Then move Donavan Smith to right tackle replacing Demar Dotson. In my opinion that would be a Smart move. But WTFDIK.

  50. HowMuchIsAnEarOfCornInTampa? Says:

I don’t comment very often, and a reasonable percentage of those don’t make it past the judges, but I feel this thread, I think you call it, has exceptional comments and commenters. That ‘Defense Rules’ guy should get a job with Joe. I seem recalling actually writing that before. Someone (Joes) should check his math in his article, and if true, then a whole article should be written on just this. Or just reprint his comments as an article. Being numbers oriented, I think this just blows our current qb out of the water. Maybe I can’t put it all on the qb, but man, are we really the 4th ranked offense in the NFL? If we truly are, then look at how diving into those percentages and adding them all together in my head, it seems to me that 65% of the time, we are pathetic.

Someone else commented about starting, or at least using our backup qb. I, along with him, can’t believe we haven’t given him a single snap in his career. Is our current qb THAT insecure?

I also like the ‘fire the cannons’ FSU homer that has seen the light. I don’t mean that as derogatory, because I agree with him. Enough is enough with our current qb.

And then this comment by ‘proudbucsfan’. While I don’t thing we should get rid of OJ, even though he is not being used to his potential, I love the idea of going after Trent Williams and moving Donovan to the right side. Two birds with one stone. I think Donovan is good, not great. Trent is great. But if I AM a numbers guy, wishing ain’t gonna get that deal done. What would I be willing to give up? And then some other commenter gave me the answer. Don’t sign our current qb in the off-season and use the intended money for the TRENCHES. There’s always a commenter wanting to fix the Trenches. I couldn’t agree more. You START there, not with flash. If Joe had his way, we have Johnny Manziel as qb with Dalvin Cook as running back and both of them would have been just pummelled. Dalvin would have been nice, but Manziel? Come on, Man!! Just like this ‘America’s probowler qb’ nonsense I am forced to read because Joe DOES have the best Bucs site out there.

Enough. Joe, hire that ‘Defense Rules’ guy! He takes a different angle with his comments that are not only enlightening, but are relevant and don’t antagonize other commenters by calling them names.
