Keys Of Todd Bowles’ Quick News Conference

September 26th, 2019

Short answers

Todd Bowles is not a media showman and he typically has little interest in enlightening answers.

That was on full display today at One Buc Palace.

Bowles was calm, cool and about as vanilla as his defense was last Sunday during his weekly news conference this afternoon. (“Vanilla” was Coach Arians’ word for the defense.)

Some highlights:

On Daniel Jones’ winning touchdown run: “Obviously the [pass rush] game didn’t work right and he scored. It’s really that simple.”

On the defense: Two good games one bad one. “We gotta learn how to close out ball games”

On why the Bucs failed to close out the game and what went wrong: “A little bit of everything. I’m not going to sit up here and make excuses.”

On struggles in the secondary: “We didn’t make plays.”

Are there communication issues? “No.”

On Saquon Barkley getting knocked out and how that changed things: “We didn’t make plays. … We don’t make excuses.”

Was having no real NFL game film on Jones a factor? “No.”

On Rams head coach Sean McVay: “Innovative, bright. Team loves him and that’s evident in how they play.”

On Shaq Barrett: “He’s on a roll now. … We’re happy to have him.” … Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vita are being “doubled teamed a lot” and Barrett is taking advantage.

On Rams attack: They run they ball well and they throw it well. Huge offensive line. Smart quarterback. “It’s like pick your poison with them.” Agrees with reporter take that Rams are one of the more well balanced offenses in the league.

What makes Bowles’ mostly empty answers stand out more is him getting rolled out to the media immediately following offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich’s weekly news conference. Leftwich can be animated and very open at times, and he looks like he enjoys or at least appreciates the opportunity to talk to fans via the media.

Tell the truth coach you don’t trust Winston to throw 6 TDs per game

Vita Vea is a FORCE and Ndamukong Suh is doing what he’s always done. That being said, between the both of them they have zero sacks and four QB hits combined.

It’s only a matter of time before the slack-jawed mouth breathers start complaining about how Vea or Suh aren’t filling up the stat sheet. You know, the same troglodytes who said Gerald McCoy didn’t do enough when he was double or triple teamed.

For the record, Vea and Suh are playing at a very high level which is something McCoy did for his entire career here but you know, I guess McCoy didn’t have the “dawg” in him (whatever the hell that means).

  3. DesertBucsfan Says:

There has got to be some kind of communication error with that Jones TD run. From the camera angle it seems like a receiver was triple teamed. All defenders had their backs turned. No QB spy with a mobile QB. That game is over. Time to move on. We do have a chance against the Rams. Buc up and play some football.

    Go Bucs

    Agree with you D -Rome.

The Media are a bunch of idiots, that ask the same questions, year after year. Just cut and paste! When Brian Belichick answers in the same manner, it’s not a big deal. ASK BETTER QUESTIONS, the key word being questions.

so happy and interested to get Drome’s take on the the defensive coordinators’ preeser!! Im sure once drome puts his xbox controller down he may heat up burritos in the microwave for dinner.

  10. Pewter power Says:

Dinner know about his absences being empty that’s just the negative take this site has on everything. Nothing he sits was wrong, is there anything thing he can suh a by excuse he can make for that loss? Unrealistic expectations like what is the side really gonna say

  11. idiaznet Says:

Sorry, but D-Rome you are incorrect about McCoy. He loved to run around blocks hence the reason he was really bad at run stopping. This is one reason that Buckner didn’t like McCoy’s style. Suh and Vea do not have that problem since they don’t rely solely on a quick move. They both power through the blocks that is why they are so good with double teams and get that push in the middle.

Go back and watch that last couple of years with McCoy and you will see it is true if you run at him he will move out of the way to avoid the block. He is also doing the same thing in Carolina. There is a reason he is 2nd string up there. He was not always double or triple teamed here like everyone claims. He also doesn’t use his hands very well at all to fight off the blocks.

Don’t get me wrong I am not a hater of him, just a realist. I used to love him coming out of Oklahoma, but I have coached the line and have just really seen some major holes in his game he has never taken the time to fix. This is a reason that SAPP and others were not happy with him during his time here.

Hopefully Vea doesn’t fall into that trap as well. Just my 2 cents..

“Mcvay modern quick passing attack than taking shots deep. going to make our 3 burnt biscuits look helpless

Mcvay makes great play designs. Misdirection. Legal picks

Look at the difference of the play designs from BL. Rams receivers will be wide open

    45-17 Rams win

My Dad and I are ultimate JW3 homers but he is going to have 1 of his worst games in his career

Son of Bum w/ Donald blasting thru and Taliban and Peter’s playing tight man coverage

    Annual west coast beatdown…like clockwork”

    Loser Franchise

  14. Bnice Says:

@ Kobe faker – Actually Mcvay really runs a handful or less formations in his offense, its just there is a ton of plays that come out of those formations. If they can stop the run and get somewhat consistent pressure on goff and make him win the game, it’ll be a lot closer than what you are predicting.

  15. D-Rome Says:

My Dad and I are ultimate JW3 homers but he is going to have 1 of his worst games in his career

I’m not sure if he’ll have one of the worst games of his career but I have the Rams defense in a few of my DraftKings lineups. I anticipate at least two INTs and a couple of sacks. I don’t think Jameis is going to have a good game like he did last week.

  16. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

    “Unlike Papa Smurf Bruce

Wonderboy plays to his strengths and to opponents weaknesses

Kupp and Cook isolated against our shutdown corners

misdirection sweeps and Gurley on the screens outside edges

Rams Offense in a little funk cause Goff is really not elite against good defenses however

this week against our pass defense is a cure to get their offense rolling

*Talk all week long of Barett and his sacks….MR AARON DONALD going to take it personal

My Dad Guarantees 3 sacks for Aaron Donald”

  17. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“You know, the same troglodytes who said Gerald McCoy didn’t do enough when he was double or triple teamed.”

Suh is clearly outplaying MeCoy and is quite the bargain compared to what they paid Geraldini last couple years. Plus Vea is on a rookie contract. Beau Allen also has flashed a few times.

  18. Steven007 Says:

Hey Joe, can you litter the thread with even more podcasts? Asking for a friend.

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

A matter of trusting JW has nothing to do with Bowles and his job. He schemes our defense regardless of who our QB is. Whether it be JW or Daffy Duck.

  20. richbucsfan Says:

Sunday will prove that the Bucs are who we thought they were. Maybe they can play with a running clock…

  21. D1 Says:

    Son of kobe,

I believe you’re giving way too much credit to McVay. He’s done a great job turning the franchise around no doubt. But He’s not a genius play designer. Nor a particularly great playcaller. He’s certainly not this creative genius or cutting edge innovator you believe him to be.

Goff has struggled against certain defenses but whereas you put the offensive struggles solely on Goff’s shoulder the reality is a big part of the problem is McVay.

The Rams are beatable but doubtful the bucs can get a win without putting up some points. If we can score and it shouldn’t be difficult, this game is winnable. If it’s low scoring defensive struggle then it’s about mistakes. New coaches and players , new schemes and being relatively early in the season, the odds swing to the rams.

I don’t expect our defense to get lit up. The Rams offense isn’t that difficult to figure out and shut it down. Talking scheme wise, so it’s on the players.
