Ndamukong Suh Talks Bucs

May 27th, 2019

TV appearance.

A guy who has yet to step foot on U.S. soil as a member of the Bucs, though he has already signed a contract, was talking about Tampa Bay this morning.

To the best of Joe’s knowledge, the first public comments by Ndamukong Suh as a member of the Bucs came — not on NFL Network, not on PFT Live on NBC Sports Network, not on FS1, not on BSPN.

No, Suh was talking Bucs on — are you ready for this? — the Tennis Channel.

(The power of social media. Joe has three channels blocked on his DirecTV: NBA TV, Golf Channel and the Tennis Channel. Joe doesn’t hate tennis like the non-basketball association or professional golf, but like the other two sports, Joe would be hard-pressed to name a half-dozen tennis players. The singular, snooty country club sports are just not Joe’s bag.)

Suh is attending the French Open while vacationing in France. He also got engaged there last week. Suh did a spot on the channel’s set and of course, spoke little of football but mostly tennis (duh!) and architecture (!). Toward the end of the interview, Suh was asked about his new gig with the Bucs.

“I had an opportunity to talk very deeply with [Bucs defensive coordinator] coach Todd Bowles as well as Bruce Arians — two elite coaches that I have had great interactions with in years past,” Suh said.

“I like being part of things that you can build and be able to put them over the top. Hopefully, my talent as well as all the other guys — former Nebraskan Lavonte David — we can play together and change the game there and get us to a winning situation.”

This is the first time in many years Joe has watched an interview with Suh. The guy doesn’t seem anywhere near his football image of a leg-stomping, quarterback-blasting, nads-kicking brute he is on the football field. Suh comes across as a well-spoken, reasoned, intelligent man.

You know, the kind that rubs elbows with Warren Buffett.

You know, the kind you would see on a tennis court at a country club.

You can watch the video below.

(Joe’s confident this is the first time in the nearly-11-year history of JoeBucFan.com that Joe has referenced the Tennis Channel.)

Wants to help change the room here…hmm exactly why we signed him.

  2. Huskaneer Says:

    Joe,
Based on Suh having played so much at nose tackle last year could you see his sack numbers jump quite a bit since Vea will fill that role in Bowles scheme? Iā€™m biased as a Husker fan and loved McCoy throughout his tenure but I really think Suh is a massive improvement for this defensive scheme. He is a perfect 5-tech for our new defense. I think the national pundits are down on this move because they think Suh and McCoy are such similar players but if you really study the tape they couldnā€™t be more different.

  3. Clean House Says:

No offense, but sure beats Batman….

  4. Joe Says:

    Huskaneer:

You are right. GMC and Suh are far different players. Not really sure how Bowles will use Suh (or Vea). And of course, Bowles seems to be the polar opposite of Arians. Bucco Bruce says whatever is on his mind. Bowles is about as open as a bank vault on weekends. So not sure we will know about Suh’s duties until September.

  5. phattitudes Says:

Love this addition. After nine years of McCoy, it was time for a change. Suh is not the thug he is portrayed to be. Much of his “bad” behavior is in the distant past. He is a breath of fresh air in a locker room that needed it. Yet even as a new addition, he commands respect. He is different from McCoy and potentially a better fit with Vea. It could well be Vea who picks up the sacks that the Bucs lost in moving McCoy.

  6. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

Like the frightened baby chipmunk joe is afraid of anything that is different
Cmon joe tennis is a great sport
Unfortunately, you had one Joe writing the post speaking for both. The Joe typing this has played multiple times with Ira Kaufman in recent years and at one time was a rabid fan of the pro game.–Joe

  7. Huskaneer Says:

    Phattitudes:

Thatā€™s a good point about Vea possibly picking up more sacks due to Suh. I also think LVD and White will make more plays at LB than Bucs fans are used to. Suh and Vea are going to keep those two a lot more clean and free than they would have been with McCoy. We will definitely have the strongest interior line in the league.

  8. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete (formerly known as 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans') ***Rhealist, louden, & tmax are the worst posters ever!!! Says:

I must admitb I like Suh ALOT more after watching this interview and getting to know a little bit about him as a person…

I’m feeling a good vibe with this signing. I would totally hangout with Suh. He seems like an interesting dude…

  9. Cobraboy Says:

My biggest surprise about Suh is how articulate he is.

To hear folks talk, he was a thug who grunts and stomps on defenseless players.l

  10. Les Says:

I’m pretty sure that Alex Cappa and the other Bucsā€™ right guards will not be sleeping very well before and after training camp starts.

If we can develop or bring in anyone who can slow Suh down during camp then we will have finally solved our right guard problem as an ancillary benefit of signing the defensive man-beast-Suh.

Any word on whether he will wear 93? The irony is stone crab-delicious!

  11. @Hands2theface Says:

Suh was an Engineering Major at Nebraska. Architecture is probably like art to him.

  12. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

I grew up playing tennis in Tampa before going to college at U of I for tennis

  13. DooshLaRue Says:

Oh…. so you can be a nice guy off the field and a freaking animal on the field.
Softieā€™s supporters had me believing it was one or the other.

    Donā€™t make me laugh!

    No more softness!

    Go Bucs!!

  14. OneBuc55 Says:

I can can heard it now…all of Ray J chanting SUUUUUUHHH! after he buries the opposing teams QB for a sack…

Weeks ago BA mentioned “finding the missing piece” to put us over the top…I know it may be a bit premature but I believe Suh is that missing piece…His temperament, physicality, and swagger has been something we’ve missed around these parts since Sapp left…You can bet you paycheck that he’ll destroy and side-swipe his share of QBs this season…

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The guy doesnā€™t seem anywhere near his football image of a leg-stomping, quarterback-blasting, nads-kicking brute he is on the football field. Suh comes across as a well-spoken, reasoned, intelligent man.

Of course….he is in France…..the French will do that to you……turn you into a pu$$y.

  16. Joe Says:

Like the frightened baby chipmunk joe is afraid of anything that is different
Cmon joe tennis is a great sport

May be to some. Joe doesn’t hate it; just not Joe’s cup of tea.

(The “other Joe” is a fan of tennis.)

On the other hand, golf and the non-basketball association drove “this Joe” to NASCAR.

  17. ModHairKen Says:

How many remember the Suh-McCoy draft and felt like we really missed out by ending up with McCoy? I did.

It has now been 10 years since some idiot thought Raheem was a better coach than Gruden.
Firing Gruden for Morris was asinine. Stupid. Worst decision in franchise history. A 10 year setback. Every single major decision since then has been a mistake.

Finally, with the hiring of Arians, the punishment for firing Gruden is over. Dumping McCoy for Suh feels like a wrong will be righted. We need people who want to win. Suh and Arians are winners.

  18. Jeff Says:

I like his mojo way more than McCoy.

  19. DB55 Says:

    Richie incognito is a FA.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

Serena sent Suh’s mom a mother’s day present? Kind of strange. Got a birthday coming up. Tell her to send me cash.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

As this defense gets built I’m starting to love the Suh signing. Everybody is putting big expectations on Suh and that should only help my main man…..VitaV take off this year……….When your talking about DTs year one is simply a taste(except out last big DT). Second a third year is usually when you see them start taking over games, if they’re worthy.

VitaV Has All-Pro potential. I saw it last year. I can’t wait for it……He could easily be a larger impact player then Derwin James is but I don’t care. Let them both become All Pros. Y’all can squirm and argue about whose better…….Me, Ill just be glad we got Vita.

  22. Husker4Bucs Says:

    @Huskaneer…..Spot on !!!!! GBR !!!

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

It’s amusing how we all develop sometimes unconscious prejudices.

We assume that you need to be a bad arse dirty player to be successful in the NFL. Not really. Bart Starr who passed yesterday was known as the consummate gentleman as was our own Leroy Selmon.

Good players come with ALL kinds of dispositions, smarts, and meanness.

Another prejudice that I’ve had and seen reflected in this thread. Really mean bad dudes must not be all that bright. Mike Tyson syndrome.

Suh is very bright!!! He’s not a publicity hound so in truth we do not know much about him. Seems like kind of a private guy…polar opposite of GMC…so don’t know how well we’ll ever get to know him.

But he is smart. Suh has a construction management degree from Nebraska and has aspirations to be a general contractor after his professional career.

His father, Michael Suh, is a mechanical engineer and owns his own heating and cooling company in Portland. For his first two years in college before he knew about his professional prospects, Suh had wanted to “work with my dad and build his company up to be as big as possible” after graduation.

I suspect the Suh is a far more grounded human being…has a great record of philanthropy…than his football exploits would indicate.

So it seems you can be a bright, giving man and still be mean as hell on the field and kick guys in the ‘nads and stomp on them. Just like you can be a total class act like Selmon and Starr and still succeed on the field.

There is more than one way to succeed.

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Tampabaybucfan… sorry the French have more backbone than Americans. They do protest publicly the injustices their government imposes upon them. Americans are totally cowed and afraid to organize publicly.

  25. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Suh is smart as they come…just not the sissy so many fans crave for some reason.

  26. Snook Says:

I guess Joe hasn’t done much research or knows much about Suh. He’s always been a well spoken and intelligent guy. No, Joe just wrote that it’s been a long while since hearing him present himself.. -Joe

This clip is an example of exactly the reason why I come to this site everyday. Thanks Joe!

  29. Joe Says:

    Thanks Joe!

    Thank you!

  30. rrsrq Says:

Iā€™m surprised that Joe is surprised, Suh attained his degree from Nebraska, he gave back $2.6 million to the school when he signed his contract, his father I believe was an engineer. His name means something ā€œhouse of spearsā€, not just a given name picked from a baby book – he was named with purpose.

How many players in any sport, knows how to turn it off and on, on and off the field/court.

That is shallow thinking and not doing the homework, I do like the Joes site, but some of the naming of people (when trying to stigmatize them) sometimes is a lil too much.

  31. DB55 Says:

Aspirations to be a general contractor
    ———————–
St. Pete but I’m not sure where you’re getting this info. You guys read one lame article on Bucs dot com and go with it

Suh is good friends with Warren Buffett he’s been an investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist for years now. He plans to own everything after retirement.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/darrenheitner/2017/12/08/ndamukong-suhs-retirement-plan-real-estate-tech-and-restaurant

Some people focus on the on-field bullying but others know that Suh is a real man and mentor on and off the field.

I think Nassib is going to love Suh. I see them at lunch discussing portfolios and yields and dividends. Suh is literally the real life version of Marvels character “The Beast”.

  32. BucEmUp Says:

Phatitude….your right people change as they grow older…WHO KNEW RIGHT???!!!!!!

MUCH like Jameis has grown and will show his maturity and playing with a real defense will pay huge dividends with his first real coaching staff of his career!!!

    ITS ALWAYS BEEN COACHING!!!!!!

I like that he hasn’t had a suspension since 2014. I like reading this. People in Miami and LA have complained about his affect on team chemistry, though, so I’ll take it all with a grain of salt.

  34. Eric y Says:

Joe suh has always spoken properly. heā€™s not from the ghetto raised by single mom like many other athletes … they do have African American athletes who are raised in a proper home. If you’re implying that Joe expects poor speech from athletes, you’d be incorrect. Joe knows loads of intelligent non-athletes who are bad public speakers, or would be if given a chance. –Joe … I love suh as a athlete simply because he is a beast on the field … he is a throwback nfl player … the one who doesnā€™t shake hands before a game with the opponent

  35. Eric y Says:

I really believe joe is your old school American dude if I have to work with you I will but when I get home I want nothing to do with you … if you get my drift ā€œwinkā€

You’ve Both got basis for your arguments. I would point out that while the Vichy French are perhaps the most publicized story of WWII France, the French, like Poland, had some of the fiercest and respected underground resistance in Europe. I think the Vichy French were driven more by moneyed elites than everyday Frenchmen, but it is always good sport to rag on cheese-eating surrender monkeys. Hahaha

The yellow vests are definitely inspirational. The French are probably feeling a lot more cornered right now than most Americans understand. I expect we will see the same thing in 5-10 years if conditions here ever get to the point that the French are experiencing.

  37. BringBucsBack Says:

Congrats Suh, she is beautiful and seems like a lovely woman.

Props to you for your interest in tennis; itā€™s a great game!

Maybe the table tennis stays in the locker room after all.

Bucfan37, be careful, many of us ā€˜Mericans are completely unaware of life outside of our country, let alone that other sovereign peoples can even exist, display intelligence, independence or courage apart or different from us.

  40. Mark the Mailman Says:

This guy would kick McCoy’s ass AND beat him in tennis.

  41. Todd Says:

    StPeteBucsFanā€”

Great post; fantastic perspective. After hearing we signed a Suh I immediately went to YouTube and researched everything Suh. After viewing a couple actual interviews instead of just highlights, I was struck by how articulate he was/is. Indeed, heā€™s obviously intelligent. I can only imagine him in the Bucsā€™ position room. I submit he becomes quite the player/coach…I bet he takes Vea under his wing like a proud papa. Just seems to be that kind of guy. Always respectful in interviews; always a man-beast when interviewing centers, guards and tackles on game day!

  42. MadMax Says:

Welcome aboard big guy….we need you! Unfortunately we still need another DE since we’re losing JPP….oh well, lets work with what we’ve got….BA and TB will get it done….like I said, I have that feeling we’re making the playoffs this year….ttake that over in vegas baby. If I wasnt trying to buy a bike, I’d throw 1k at it.

  43. firethecannons Says:

Are you kidding me!?, Suh is extremely well spoken and pleasant and well rounded and last but not least–the dude is built like a brick house! Comparing him to McCoy-he looks dominant all the way around and he knows and respects our coaches well unlike GMC. Excellent interview–also do not get the tennis channel, so appreciate it Joe.

  44. adam from ny Says:

so well spoken he is…with a fairly versatile vocabulary as well…

    kong suh in the haus!

  45. firethecannons Says:

Heh Joe–perhaps you should get a joenascarfan site going–I am a fan of that too–#24 and #4 in this household, as far as I know–never see anything remotely similar to a joenascarfan site.

  46. BigMacAttack Says:

Love the guy. Engineering degrees donā€™t come easy. Intelligence is always a top priority with me, something GMC lacks that holds him back. Suh is a major upgrade to this defense. Iā€™m stoked to have him. So many of us wanted him on day one and when he became a free agent. Heā€™s learned a lot over the years and will be a big asset.

  47. adam from ny Says:

but will he hang on the front of the stadium…that’s the question

  48. Smashsquatch Says:

Suh + Vea + Nassib + (Spence/Bucannon/Barrett/Nelson)…..we’re going to need to add an edge rusher via trade or a waivers cap casualty. JPP is toast and Licht is busy constructing plan B.

  49. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

My name is Suh, how do you do?

    Love – 40 motherfu#*ker! Now you die!

Once I had a tennis match with Pete Maravich, he couldn’t play because his knee was acting up. So he just watched and drank beer while the center and shooting guard for the New Orleans Jazz tore us up playing doubles.

One guy was 7′ plus arms like a spider monkey and quick like a cat. When he was at the net we couldn’t hit a ball past him or over him. Worst beating I ever had!

Take that Joe, NBA, Tennis and football with a Johnny Cash musical reference.

  50. Mike Johnson Says:

To hell with all of the hype. Bring us a winning record and a playoff berth. Good signing, But aren’t..they all?

  51. BucsBandit Says:

Anyone picked up on the irony that he’s probably going to wear McCoy’s #93?

  52. Doctor Stroud Says:

The other “deal” that was mentioned in the interview was that Suh is getting married. Congratulations!

That being said, it should hardly be news that Suh is “excited” to come to Tampa. From the looks of it, we are all desperate for good news. For this reason, be prepared for the Tampa Bay media to hang on his every word. I hope that this works out, but going through the past decade of losing has made me think that Team Glazer just needed a “splash” signing in order to salvage a bad off season and get fans to buy tickets. There are so many teams out there with $9.5 million in cap room. Did Suh draw any interest from other teams? Was he saving himself for the Bucs? Is this another: #PaidFloridaVacation OR #PaidFrenchVacation. Let’s see what happens!
