Fast & Fitting In

May 15th, 2019

“Jason, our picks are killin’ it.”

The Buccaneers drafted what they hope(d) are three highly aggressive and fast defensive backs to play in Todd Bowles’ attack, blitz-heavy defense.

That aggression already has shown up.

Day 1 of OTA practice wrapped up yesterday and twice Bucco Bruce Arians said he liked the speed of the session.

Joe asked Arians who reflected that pace he likes. He went right to the rookies.

“I think all the young kids jumped out there right away and didn’t look like they had not been here and looked like they fit right in,” Arians replied. “I was really impressed with Devin [White’s] interception. You know, all those young guys have such good ball skills. Turnovers is something that we really preach about and we got some today.”

Combine that quote with Vernon Hargreaves landing in Arians’ doghouse yesterday, and Arians is sending quite an early message to veteran players.

Of course he liked the rookies…they are all his guys! lol

  2. Bobby M. Says:

Same was said about Hargreaves….Spence….etc. Hargreaves cant even do whatever basics are required at this point to even step on the practice field. That’s our 1st rd CB that’s now a nickel CB watching practice from the sidelines because he’s already in the doghouse with the coaching staff.

Looks like the stress is going directly to Jason’s waistline….Nutrisystems commercials after his career with the Bucs next year

  4. FowlBall Says:

Jason looks more like a member of the grounds crew than the GM of a multi-million dollar operation!.

  5. SCBucsFan Says:

Bobby M management 101 is to put a veteran (like VHIII) on notice for forgetting how hungry he was as a rookie. The whole team will notice. If it wasn’t him it would have been someone else. Will be forgotten and VHIII will be judged on how he plays.

  6. AwShbucs Says:

Bonzai… it also helps that they are actually in position to make plays on the ball instead of getting burnt to a crisp by tryout players like MJ Stewart was last season.

Hargreaves probably showed up stoned and the coaches noticed.

a veteran… that is laughable. the short, slow, stupid, fragile over-draffted by 6 rounds has played in 10 freaking games… and was burnt and embarrassed himself in each and everyone of them… vh3bust is an immature punk with no talent and not enough common sense to do the right thing at the first mini camp. there is no defending this clown even from one of the board members of the delusional optimists club like yourself. if vh3bust sees the field during regular season games you can guarantee another basement title. there is no cure for short, fragile, slow an d stupid….

tmax – is the capitals button on your keyboard broken or are you just uneducated? Judging by your post I’m quite sure I know the answer. Hurry upstairs, Mommy has your lunch and juice box ready.

  11. NOSBOS Says:

Dean,Bunting and Edwards were said to be running step for step with ME,Chris and Breshard. If they are capable of staying with our guys they can run with and WR Corp in this league. God bless all those young fresh legs.

  13. NOSBOS Says:

I stated days after the draft I didn’t quite get people penciling inn Davis and VH as day 2 starters. Like someone said in an above post “these are BA’s guys”.. In less they look like deer in the headlights (which early signs say they don’t) they starting week 1. The takeaways from the Bucs app Dean,Bunting and Edwards were with the first team.

  14. NOSBOS Says:

Kevin minter said this is a easy defense to learn. LVD said the same yesterday. This system requires athleticism. LVD raved about Devin’s day 1 communication. These dudes ahead of the curve.

  15. Lord Cornelius Says:

No one on the D should feel safe about their job or status. No one is proven and everyone has been part of the losing.

    CLEAN THIS UP

    Average ish defense +
    Average ish run game +
    Average ish special teams+
    =

Winston’s best season and a playoff birth.

In no year has Winston had an average team around him when it comes to the culmination of a run game / defense / special teams

2015: solid run game but horrific defense & special teams (27th in yards / 31st in points given up / 30th in FG % made).

2016: average defense (23rd in yards / 15th in points allowed) but horrific run game / horrific special teams (24th in rush yards per game / 29th in YPA / 29th in rushing TDs / 32nd in FG % made)

STILL IN 2016 – WITH AVERAGE DEFENSE AND HORRIBLE EVERYTHING ELSE WE HAD 9 WINS. TEAM GAME. DEFENSE MATTERS A LOT!!!!!!

2017-2018 – we know the story: horrific defense / horrific run game / horrific special teams.

Meanwhile for 4 years the only thing this team has done well is pass the ball.

Yes we’ve turned it over too much as well, but as I’ve charted MANY times, most of those turnovers come in huge bunches in big losses where our D gets super shredded early and we are down at least 2-3 TDs by the 2nd quarter or halftime.

It’s why I don’t get the obsession with QB play for this team. QB/WR/TE play has BY FAR been the best positional performances on this team the last 4 years. E

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Yep the Jets were such a great defense last year with better players than the bucs have currently and we are to expect bowles to coach a lesser talented group and get better results? The NFC South is getting nervous

  18. joestang Says:

Someone should tell Licht that he’s killing it along with all of us.

  19. Ndog Says:

Dusthty Rhothdes was Bowles the defensive coordinator for the Jets last year?

  20. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

From the reports I am hearing, Vernon Hargreaves did nothing wrong but is coming off an injury (other than his shoulder). Arian was just making a public statement that Hargreaves needs to get his mind right while he is sitting out injured so he can come back mentally ready.

  21. Succaneers Says:

THE SUCCANEERS DRAFT WILL BE A HUGE BUST, THIS TEAM WILL GET DESTROYED THIS SEASON AND BE VERY LUCKY TO WIN A GAME

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Was Dirk Koetter the OC for the bucs last year? You have to be out of your mind if the HC does not have their thumb on everything esp their area of expertise that got them a job esp when it may be the end for them. A title does not always mean much it is just used to get a higher pay and for purposes of not getting poached from other teams without compensation. Eric Bienemy has OC by his name in KC as did doug pedersen but andy reid calling the plays there. Sean Mcvay had an OC in LA, got a new HC job in Cincy, but he was calling the plays….titles do not mean jack squat

LOL..you should post here…not because you don’t whatever the Buccaneers …but you are so bad at creating a post…I suggest a new screen name for you “Special Ed”

  26. NOSBOS Says:

“This defense has been average” what are you clairvoyant or some s&@;. To my knowledge no one has seen our defense yet. Do y’all think before y’all press send???

  27. NOSBOS Says:

Now if you said “this defense up to this point has been average “ you would be accurate. But our current defense to this point is a mystery. But that b$&@ fina be raw. Make no mistake about it.

  28. Adrnagy Says:

Just read @nfl projected starters. Man a lot of questions to be answer on camp.

  29. TexBuc Says:

Our defense this year just needs to be a notch below league average which would equate to a 3 plus wins compared to last year. A better run blocking scheme tailored to the strengths of the OL (power blocking) would reduce the number of pass plays called and increase effectiveness of play action resulting in fewer turnovers.
With a few bounces our way and one or two rookies being able to contribute this year would give us a possible wild card playoff spot.

It all hinges on Jameis…we all know that….if he can play SMART….and manage the game the team has a chance…if he continues the backyard heroics bonehead plays well then nothing will have changed and a complete overhaul will happen next year…..we all know that

  31. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

NOSBOS….i know its been tough on you this month celebrating FSU day on 5-7 and then Bucs Day on 5-11….but the bucs will be good soon but don’t get too worked up the bucs are going to be basically the same 5-11 team if not worse in 2019. The offense was top 5 so tough to do much better and defense was bottom and then defense lost its 3 best players so….brace your self for impact

In computer lingo or jargon all caps are used for shouting. Strings of exclamation marks are also forms of shouting or extreme emphasis.

  33. SenileSenior Says:

P.S. In many situations their use is extremely rude and overbearing. In some situations their use can be appropriate. Common sense reveals most of the time.

  34. SenileSenior Says:

You’ve hit the nail on the head, Lord Cornelius.

The best teams, i.e. play off teams, don’t have to excel in all phases of the game all of the time. That do have to be at least “NFL average” in some aspects and excel in the rest to be winners.

  35. Doctor_berto Says:

Hargreaves has no business on an NFL roster. Cant wait for him to be gone. Guess you can’t the star dancer on the team.

  36. NOSBOS Says:

Dusthty you must smokin rocks. You folks wouldn’t know talent if it smacked you. This team has split games with the division winner the last two seasons. Do some research on the birds and panthers, they are quietly rebuilding. The margin between last and first in this league is never that huge dude. We going to the Super Bowl and we gone win tha b$&@. Our guys are to young to know it ain’t suppose to happen that fast.

  37. Pickgrin Says:

Just looking at the most basic measurables – Its easy to see how much faster and more athletic our Defense became in the first 3 rounds of this year’s draft…

but but but what about the kicker!?

  42. NOSBOS Says:

Pick I think we are now the most athletic team in the entire league. These folks talk defense this and defense that but to my eye it’s going to be at least 6 to 8 new starters.

  43. NOSBOS Says:

Senile trust me when I tell you sir. All these mentally weak @$$ posters that spew bull ish in here everyday. All they gone do is change their tags once that season kicks off. I promise you. I wish Joe would somehow store and identify them so we could get back at that time.

  44. Pickgrin Says:

The “slowest” of 4 defensive players we drafted this year rds 1>3 (a safety) is just 3/100ths of a second slower than the fastest guy on our entire defense last year…

@ Fowlball , Licht is one hell of a bad dresser and I doubt he can tie a tie !!! Typical sport jacket , tee shirt formal dress clown , he looks like a member of the ground crew even in a sport coat !!! Doesn’t mean a thing as far as GM talent but his actions sure seem to follow his dress ?? Well ! maybe it Does !!
