No Worries For Cam Brate

May 15th, 2019

Focused.

This time of the year, the NFL is rife with speculation.

That’s all we’ve got. That and underwear football.

And two Bucs star defensive linemen have given fans plenty of drama this offseason.

It sure looks like stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is a goner. He hasn’t yet shown up to voluntary offseason workouts or practices and his $13 million salary has knotted up the Bucs, already in salary cap hell, so badly that the team cannot sign its full draft class.

Then defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who finally broke the double-digit sack drought last season, found himself in a car wreck and may be lost for the first month of the season if he isn’t released.

JPP’s status has led to speculation the Bucs, in dire need of quarterback pressure, will instead keep GMC. Then, that means someone’s going to have to get tossed off the pirate ship in order to stay under the salary cap. But who?

Some believe it might be Cam Brate, who is coming off January hip surgery. A touchdown machine for a tight end, Brate is the only tight end in the NFL to score at least six touchdowns in each of the last three seasons.

Joe chatted with Brate briefly after underwear football practice yesterday and he waved off the guessing game as backburner chatter.

“No, definitely not,” Brate said about if he is concerned he may be a salary cap casualty. “The only thing I am worried about right now is getting 100 percent healthy. Everything will find a way of working out. Me, personally, I just focus on getting better.”

Joe can understand why someone would look at the Bucs’ roster and salaries and connect dots that Brate might be trimmed. He is technically a No. 2 tight end making $7 million.

What those folks do not factor in is that tight end O.J. Howard, who has the potential to be a massive star, has yet to finish an NFL season off the injured reserve list. Throw in the facts that the Bucs have an offensive-minded coach who likes to throw the ball, the team had issues the past two years scoring touchdowns, and Brate is produces touchdowns for a tight end like Joe produces Bucs content, it seems unlikely Brate would be sacrificed.

Might the Bucs rework Brate’s contract? That’s reasonable. But outright cut him? Seems like an overreaction.

Bad teams shouldn’t be offing good players unless the team wants to fully rebuild.

  1. The Buc Realist Says:

Can’t out right cut him, that would be a 7 million cap hit in dead money for nothing!!!!!! can’t trade him because “word on the steet” is that his hip is slower than thought of being healthy!!!!!!!!!! Its just another example of licht weight overpaying for a one dimensional non-blocking TE to the point that there is no market value!!!!!!!!!!!!! but the sheep need to see and smell garbage before they know its garbage!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Todd Says:

Isn’t it true the only non-cap threatening move is to trade him, not cut him? If we cut him, I thought we’d have a dead-cap issue? No?

    He’s not going anywhere.

  3. DooshLaRue Says:

Who is saying cut him Joe.
I would hate to see it, but a trade would be most likely don’t you think?

  4. Go Bucs 72 Says:

I think the cutting Brate conversation is dumb. Like you pointed out he scores touchdowns on a team that has a hard time scoring touchdowns. He’s clearly one of Jameis’s favorite and most reliable targets. The Bucs don’t do a lot of contract renegotiations so I don’t think that is going to happen either. It doesn’t matter though because they should be cutting McKimono any day now.

  5. Todd Says:

    Moderator & @joes

WHY do you suffer fools like The Bucs Realist? Seriously. For the clicks?

Allowing idiots like him to continually spew ignorant (“!!!!!!!!”) and immature posts like the one above just cheapens this site. You NEVER see these kind of fools tolerated within other reputable national sites. Ever. Only in here. Joe is not the maturity police. Joe does police other things in the comments, though, many of them. Far less than 1 percent of visitors comment. Not a big priority for Joe.–Joe

I bet you to establish some standards and hold contributors to account. Learn to quickly ban those who discredit JoeBucsFan.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

Who else at TE can catch Jw3 wildly off target balls and fall down????? Who will jw3 stare down on third down, and in the redzone if CB84 is not on this garbage roster????????????????

    Joe Says: Mr Realist,

The Buc Realist says: Yes Joe,

Joe says: what are the sheep afraid of???????

The Buc Realist says: That is easy Joe, THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. TOM Says:

I think it would be foolish to get rid of Brate. Since OJ seems to be somewhat injury prone if he gets hurt again & Brate gone who’s left?

  9. Todd Says:

    @joes

Duly noted. You prefer clicks to substance. Got it.

  12. LakeLand Says:

Cam Brate is a Harvard grad, he’s no dummy
The Bucs gave him $18 million in guaranteed money
    It’s mostly in 2018-2019
They can cut him in 2020 he will be 29 then
And can get a $3 year $12-15 million contract with another team

The Bucs can’t cut him and create cap in 2019

  13. Steven007 Says:

Todd, preach. I’ve had these questions for the Joe’s many times over the years I’ve posted here. With ‘tards like Realist and trolls like Trollmax, it’s the same lame brained, retreaded post with only the slightest revisions to (maybe) make them more relevant to the OP. What are the telltale signs of a post from one of these basement dwelling clowns?

Example: Realist: will over use the word “sheep” (his wife obviously says “baaaa”), use silly phrases like “licht weight” (is that really an insult?), and of course, mind numbingly overuses exclamation points to the point where he renders them meaningless. And then his sign off is a completely ambiguous phrase that means, literally, nothing and since it doesn’t say anything allows him to later say “see, I told you so!!!!” as if someone’s actually keeping score or divvying out prizes.

Trollmax: this trolls even easier to ID. Uses the words: basement, clown, cancer, meaningless, soft, triggered, etc. Thinks Sapp is the only good player we’ve ever had. Has a puzzling disdain for literal HOF players like Brooks and HOF coaches like Dungy. He’s clearly senile and doesn’t own an original thought.

Yet Joe seems to love these guys because: loyalty. I post elsewhere (of course) and you’re right, it’s not like this anywhere else (which is mostly a good thing. PR is boring and they might post 5 articles per week. JBF does a great job posting but their comment sections is embarrassing because of the trolls. SBNation actually strikes a good balance. They have many commenters and most are well informed. You can also up vote or down vote a comment which is nice. Up voted comments get highlighted due to their perceived greater substance from the commenting community. Seems like it makes sense. And the best part is the obvious trolls are rooted out. This is what JBF lacks. Joe talks about “crimes against Joe” but the most obvious one recently was when Joe supposedly banned Trollmax for a few months only to let him post under a different moniker (this was extremely obvious and I pointed it out immediately) for the entire time he was “banned”! That was telling as well as disappointing.

Talk to the WordPress software developers. They have the ability for admin to completely block users, but no one can filter out particular commenters.

That;s more of a message board feature, which is not what this website is.

Clearly you do not go the PFT, where it is almost pure hate.

I used to design WordPress websites for a living, and that is one of the most requested features…yet the software people never added it.

The only thing more important than the 1st amendment……is the 2nd amendment!!!

I challenge anyone without googling, what’s the 3rd amendment?

  21. Todd Says:

    @Steven007

Great post. Not sure what Joe’s allergy to banning is…especially when serious contributors request it. His reasoning that he’s not the maturity police is so shallow. That’s like a restaurant owner not giving a damn that drunk idiots without jobs come into their restaurant and behave obnoxiously in front of well-meaning guests. Such a slap in the face to those if us who loyally engage with the content.

Why in the heck do they even have mods, then? To slap serious contributors around who like the Bucs’ number five pick?

    Joe’s Restaurant.

  22. Chris Simms 2020 GM Says:

Hey, that’s a great idea for a spin off, but it should be Joe & Joe’s Restaurant.

You can get anything you want at Joe & Joe’s Restaurant,

You can get anything you want at Joe & Joe’s Restaurant,

Hop right in it’s around the back, just a half mile from the railroad track,

You can get anything you want at Joe & Joe’s Restaurant.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Realist … I love the quotes around “word on the street”. If that comes from Cam Brate’s QUOTE IN THE ARTICLE … “The only thing I am worried about right now is getting 100 percent healthy” … then I get it. BTW, what happened to the “SPECULATION” compromise?

Todd … Realist occasionally makes some very valid points. All you have to do is suffer through 10 million exclamation points to find them. And oh ya , baaah like a sheep apparently.

Joe … Have the Bucs said ANYTHING about how extensive Brate’s hip injury was? Two months until training camp and he’s concerned about getting back to 100%? Of the 18 players who finished the season on IR, looks like 9 of them are still on the Bucs roster: Bond, Cichy, Evan Smith, Justin Evans, VHIII, OJ, Minter, Stevie T & Wilson. Brate wasn’t one of them … he gutted out the season. But do we know ANYTHING about how those 10 rehabbing are coming along? And especially Smith, Evans, VHIII, OJ & Brate.

  24. Steven007 Says:

Todd, I appreciate the kind words. I think what we’re both trying to say is we can have well-reasoned debate without resorting to low rent tactics. Joe however thrives with the low renters. Listen, slum lords existed for a reason. Realist and Trollmax would get eviscerated if they posted at SBNation (to mention only one of the other sites). Seriously, they wouldn’t last a week. That’s largely why they’re here. But they’re also here for the frequent content which I cited previously. That’s why I’m here too. There is a poster at SBN that hates GMC almost as much as Trollmax. But his posts are actually well written and well-reasoned. He’s not trolling, just stating a preference and backing it up with real opinion and data without resorting to calling GMC “she” or something else ridiculous. neither Realist or Trollmax have the nads to EVER express their written, trollish opinions to GMC in person, or any other alpha male for that matter. They hide behind their keyboards like so many do these days.

DR, Realist’s rare “valid points” (even a stopped clock is right twice a day) is negated by his overwhelmingly more frequent nonsensical appeals and soliloquies to the so called “real” fans. Pffft. Newsflash, Realist: if we’re posting here, we’re a real fan. Even Joe constantly reminds us that only 1% of visitors comment; seems unlikely the fake fans would take the time to do so. My fandom is no less (or more) real than yours.

Ever considered that a portion of the 99% who do NOT post in here don’t because of all the ignorant trolls spewing diarrhea within their wall of words?

A minimum of 2% would post, I submit…we’re it not for the horrible service to loyal customers at Joe’s Restaurant.

  30. SenileSenior Says:

Unbelievable, Todd, Buccaneer Bonzai, et al.

As a retired IT guy I am intrigued by your idea for an “ignore button” and the discussion it engendered.

Just a few quick questions off the top of my head.

How technically feasible is it to write it as an app for installation for the personal PC. What algorithms would do the job? How many clicks would it require for the user? To what degree would it be easy to use and be “intuitive”?

I am out of touch with the current state of the art as far as technology goes. I am confident that someone could solve this and make themselves a nice profit. That’s the American way as I know it.

    @Todd:

“Immature” is a word that boring people use to describe fun people.

BTW: I LOVE the ignorant responses of casual fans. They make me feel like a genius.

  33. Cobraboy Says:

Actually, I think JPP going down has solidified Cam Brate’s place on the roster.

With JPP’s production, field presence and leadership gone, this team may have to be more focused on outscoring opponents than stopping them. Brate is a big cog in that wheel.

  34. passthebuc Says:

    @SenileSenior Says

All that needs to be done, is to have a like or dislike after each post with a counter.
Maybe if one sees that there are 20 dislikes to 1 like posters may reconsider their worth.

  35. Cobraboy Says:

Ditto, like & dislike button, but needs to show who clicked the button. An Ananonymous user button is too easily used by feckless fools.

But, really, I’d suggest the Joes require a poster to register. The current WordPress app is too easy to spoof for malicious use.

  36. Cobraboy Says:

@SenileSenior: I do some IT work as well. It’s not a question of developing a new app. It’s a question of finding a canned WordPress add-on.

  37. passthebuc Says:

Why do we not have a real discussion on how to fix the Bucs for the long term. We could have done this prior to the draft but it takes guts and the willingness to be lambasted by everyone.

  38. Defense Rules Says:

Unbelievable & Steven007 … Each of us already has an ‘Ignore Button’. It’s not called that though. It’s called the ‘Don’t Read Button”. Certain JBF posters I simply refuse to read, primarily because they never add anything to the conversation. Normally there’s very little substance involved, and far too much ‘hate’ (much over-sued word here on JBF BTW). There’s no exchange of ideas wanted; it’s normally just their (misguided) ideas of how bad the Bucs are … and worse, how bad they believe they will be in the future, all without a shred of substance to their opinion.

Joe doesn’t need to be ‘The Moderation Police’ on JBF.com. One technique that is interesting though is ‘Comment Awaiting Moderation’ and Joe uses it quite often. For good reason far as I’m concerned … it’s his website and he’s ultimately responsible for its’ content. But like someone said not too long ago, when comments don’t get posted for say 3-4 hours AFTER they’re submitted, they become irrelevant. people don’t go back and read them. Algorithms aren’t that difficult to modify, and if a particular commenter is becoming especially, shall we say ‘obnoxious’, that’d be easy to remedy, without black-balling them.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Unbelievable & Steven007 … And BTW, my last ‘Comment is awaiting moderation’ as we speak. So apropos. Very nice Joe.

  40. passthebuc Says:

For starters, when you clean house, you clean house. You trade every one of value for high draft picks. Some of the drafts pick for this year, some for the next and some for 3 years out. Then you start with the trenches and the MLB. You go with a QB that is serviceable until the O line has seasoned. Then you add your QB If you do it the other way, the QB ends up damaged. This way, in 5 years you are playing for championships vs. the way we do it in 5 years we are playing for the number 1 draft pick.

  41. Steven007 Says:

    DR, oh the irony…

  42. Todd Says:

    @Cobraboy

No, “immature” is a word adults use to describe someone who lacks maturity. I could have used other words that would surely violate your sensibilities, but I chose to bring my vocabulary down to a level that even you may be able to understand.

Apparently, based on your feedback, I failed.

  43. Steven007 Says:

Defense, by the way, your comments being in moderation idea Is a good one. Unfortunately Joe would never use that for the types of comments were speaking of. he just has some obviously very arbitrary rules in place to throw something in moderation hence your recent post.

  44. Steven007 Says:

Haha, mines and moderation now too… (eye roll)

Hell, maybe I’m a casual fan because I realize this is entertainment. It’s not my life. Win or lose on Sunday- I have to work Monday. Being mad and mean to my family after a loss doesn’t make me a real fan. We fans take losses harder than the players.

Just enjoy the game and don’t let football ruin your day because of what you read. And those casual fans spend just as much money as you do to attend games.
