Keeping Cam Brate

April 21st, 2019

Keep him.

Probably the most underrated player on the Bucs is Cam Brate.

The tight end seems to be a target of some fans as a salary cap casualty. Yes, he’s making a nice piece of change at $7 million this season, but he is valuable.

First, fellow tight end O.J. Howard, while more skilled than Brate, has yet to finish a season healthy. Also, Brate is one of the most consistent offensive weapons in the NFL, as documented by Mike Clay of BSPN.

Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate is the only tight end who has scored at least 6 touchdowns each of the past three seasons.

And it is also not lost on Joe that Brate has a solid chemistry catching passes from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

No, there is no reason to toss Brate off the side of the pirate ship. He earns his keep.

No reason this year…so much is riding on how Jameis plays this year….can’t even imagine what it’ll be like if he doesn’t….

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

With the loss of Humphries & Djax, Brate has become more important…..an injury to OJ, Evans or Godwin illustrates that point…..keep Cam.

  3. Hodad Says:

If you look at it like this it makes sense. O.J. is our true TE, Brate is also, but he’s also like a big receiver. As a back up TE 7 mill seems like a lot, but 7 million is chomp change for good receivers, and Brate certainly is a good one.

  4. JabooBuc Says:

Agree with Joe here. JW needs go to guys he can rely on and Brate is certainly one of those.

  5. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

It will be interesting to see how BA utilizes our talent. But we need a running game badly.

I was reading an article yesterday about what the Giants might do in the draft. The GM Gettleman was making a case for building the trenches, saying to win in the NFL you have to do 3 things: 1) run the ball, 2) stop the run, and 3) rush the passer. And we all know this is true, in part because these are the 3 things the Bucs DON’T do.

That made me think of Jameis. Football is such a team sport, how can fans expect Jameis to win when the Bucs are so bad in these critical areas?

  6. Tackleblockwin Says:

Both Brate and Howard have proven they can produce. And the exciting thing is that Howard has not his ceiling yet imo. These two TEs, if they can stay healthy are going to put up a lot of points this year for us.

  7. Bucnjim Says:

Brate is one of those Blue collar guys who shows up on game days and does his job. No hype no glitz and luckily no sideline dancing just catches the football and lines up for the next play. How about we draft more of these hard working players on defense and less of the players that are worried more about how their hair looks for the camera.

    DL..1st pick
    OL..2nd pick
stand pat and grow a set Jason

  9. Doctor Stroud Says:

Yes, making Brate walk the plank would be surprising. He seems to be one of the few receivers who have established good “chemistry” with JW, unlike DJax. Why would the Bucs want to get rid of him? We wouldn’t have to ask that question if Licht had managed the salary cap better.

  10. K2 Says:

    Agree

  11. Anonymous Says:

Here’s a novel ideal for these so-called Cam Brate haters,
Which one is more important to our team?
    GMC @ 13mil
    or
    Brate @ 7mil

If you wanna slash cost, GMC is your solution. Vita Vea is a better fit than GMC and Cam is way more valuable at this point. Now if GMC would restructure to 7mil you might have a more legit debate, but he won’t.

  12. Jean Lafitte Says:

Who’s more valuable to the team?
    GMC @ $13mil or
    Cam @ $7mil
Now if GMC would restructure to $7mil, you could have a better debate, but he won’t. Vita Vea can easily replace GMC now, but after OJ, you need Cam.

  13. BigZ Says:

Spot on Harry in Costa Rica.

  14. JabooBuc Says:

Imagine looking at this team that can’t run the ball or play defense and thinking JW is the problem. While I am no longer a big fan of the guy, he is NOT the problem.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

OJ Howard is nothing but unrealized potential at this point. Until he steps up, Cam Brate is our best Tight End.

We already lost our second best WR in Humphries. Why would fans want to hurt the team even more?

Answer: Either they are not fans, or they lack common sense.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Oh…those thinking Bruce Arians will improve our running game, tell me, how devoted was he to the run in the past? Especially his last two years with the Cardinals?

    Not at all.

His offense is a verticle offense!

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … We apparently see something different when we look at BA’s commitment to the run game in Arizona. Before he took over, the Cards REALLY sucked at running the ball … the 2012 Cards under Whisenhunt were #32 in the NFL in BOTH rushing attempts (352) AND rushing yardage (1204). THAT’S BAD.

When BA took over in 2013, Cards went from a 5-11 record in 2012 to a 10-6 record in 2013. IMO most of the improvement was in DEFENSE, but … their rushing game also improved to #20 in rushing attempts (422) AND #23 in rushing yardage (1540). Fell off some in 2014, but improved dramatically in 2015 to #9 in rushing attempts (452) and #8 in rushing yardage (1917). Strange huh. Until I noticed that they drafted some RB named David Johnson in that very same year (2015). Interestingly (to me at least), Johnson that year only had 125 attempts for 581 rushing yards. Two other RBs … Chris Johnson gained most of the yardage (814) but Andre Ellington also added some (289) … and he had the highest YPC by far (6.4 YPC).

But you’re right, BA has stressed a ‘vertical offense’ through most of his time as an OC and HC. But he does use a relatively balanced attack it appears when he’s got the horses in the RB stable.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Harry in Costa Rica….we’ve been saying that for months now. None of that matters to a select group of numbskulls.

    It’s all Winston’s fault.

  19. TDTB Says:

Nobody thinks Cam isn’t valuable or a good player. The issue is money. Auclair was a good pick. So, can the Bucs use GMC’s and Brate’s money to better the team as a whole. I think they can. Doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player or that he’s over payed. Just circumstances dictate that money be spent in some other areas. Positions with redundancy are candidates for a trade.

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

Hump second best wr lol I guess it’s par for the course with you never being right about anything….

hump is a low ceiling bum that only a bucfan would love. what happened when hump had to start the offense sucked. hump is nothing but another popular backup buc fan falls in love with and thinks is great…. no one confuses popularity with greatness like low standard bucfan. he was undrafted for a reason and will never make a difference nor scare a signle defensive coordinator. hump is a good 5 or 6 nothing more.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

Greatness is a concept of a state of superiority affecting a person or object in a particular place or area. Greatness can also be attributed to individuals who possess a natural ability to be better than all others. The concept carries the implication that the particular person or object, when compared to others of a similar type, has clear advantage over others

The only 2 bucs greats are selmon and sapp the rest are just coat tail riding has beens with a laughable post season record.

Popularity – the state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people without the accomplishments to achieve true greatness.

  22. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

You can’t run or pass the ball without a good offensive line….build the trenches before all else

  23. #1bucsfan Says:

Brate is a tru lead by example player he has earned every bit of his contract yes his play dipped this past season but only because he was playing thru a serious hip injury that would sidelined most players let’s go Bucs an keep this guy around

  24. “That guy” Says:

With that being said they should’ve found a way to keep humphries as well.

  25. Billy_43 Says:

    @ Bonzai
    BA didn’t use David Johnson?
Only 2100 yards from scrimmage and 20 TDs in 2016.
    Sheesh.

  26. Clean House Says:

    Should have kept Humphrey’s too

  27. NOSBOS Says:

    What Rules and TDTB said.

  28. NOSBOS Says:

Everyone always talks about 12 packages but the only team I recall in recent years to actually attack using that package on a regular basis was as everyone knows the pats with Hernandez and Gronk. Man was it lethal. But outside of that I can’t think of any other team. It’s a business at the end of the day and if him leaving presents an opportunity to make the overall team better. So be it.

  29. Buccfan37 Says:

Brate is big, slow and plodding. I guess there is a place with the underachieving Bucs for now.

  30. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Jameis needs his blankee…like Hump and the Jack Nicklaus grandson @ FSU …they all get to the spot and stand waiting …Jameis’s stat padding pass…hit the stationary safety valve receiver …so Brate will be here @ 7 million

  31. Anthony Dickson Says:

If the Bucs are going to trade Brate, I would hope it’s because they can get good value for him, not just for the sake of dumping him to free up cap space. He’s much too good a player to not get something of equal value for him in return.

  32. buconboard Says:

Buccaneers TE Cameron Brate is the only tight end who has scored at least 6 touchdowns each of the past three seasons.
WTF is the problem here? The dude produces, even with a torn labrum. How many other players played through something like that?

  33. Rod Munch Says:

I thought all along you either keep Brate or keep Hump, but Brate was the more important player since OJ has yet to make it through a season without getting missing a lot of games. If OJ is healthy and plays 16 games, he’s a superstar and Brate really fades into the background. But if OJ again only plays 10-11 games before he’s hurt, then you have to have Brate out there since the TE is Jameis’ most favorite target.

  34. David Says:

They need him and they should have kept humphries too. The WR corps, strength of the team, is suddenly thin.

  35. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

Am I the only one that caught anonymous and jean post the same thing. Either jean copied or they are the same person posting under two names. I guess tamponmax did it but at least jean and anonymous post rational and educated thought instead of constantly spewing the repetitive trash that maxi pad does.

  36. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Looks like T Max got a dictionary for Easter

  37. Matlok727 Says:

He counts as 7 mill this year but only 4.2 the next few years we will keep him

  38. MadMax Says:

Im all in with keeping Mr. Brate…..he played injured last year….keep rolling with him, he’s a stud!

  39. Anonymous Says:

Brate is the only decent Buccaneer trade chip. He could get a decent return. He only had 289 yards as a backup last year. It would be a risk, but a Brate trade has merit. Some commentators here are over valuing his role as a backup.

  43. Dan McLaughlin Says:

Brate also drops a lot of passes. He should be traded or cut way the hell before GMC, who definitely earns his keep. 7 million for a back-up makes no sense. I would like to keep them both, but Brate is the one who should go if we have to make a salary cap cut
