Quinn Hints Grimes Was Scared

January 7th, 2019

Former NFL QB suggests Brent Grimes may have been scared to cover Antonio Brown.

Of course, last week (former?) Bucs corner Brent Grimes — it sure doesn’t sound as if he’s returning — made serious waves when he recounted how coaches wanted him to cover Antonio Brown this seasonand Grimes didn’t want to because he wasn’t paid enough.

Former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn sort of sympathizes with him, but also seemed to imply that Grimes was scared to cover Brown.

Why?

Quinn, co-hosting a segment on CBS Sports HQ, said Grimes made a business decision by not wanting to cover Brown. Because, Quinn said, if Grimes got torched by Brown, it would hurt his contract talks if he wanted to play another season as teams would use that as leverage against Grimes, 35.

“It’s a business decision, right?” Quinn told his co-host, Danny Kannell. “We talk about players making business decisions on the field sometimes and how they play and what they do. … He is probably thinking in the back of his head, ‘If I follow this guy on the field the whole time, maybe I have a great game but I probably won’t.”

Grimes was just returning to the lineup when the Steelers came to the Den of Depression in Week 3 after missing the first two games with a groin injury.

Quinn went on to say the fact Mike Smith would have asked Grimes to do this suggests Smith was panicking. His defense was on pace to set 99-year NFL records for most points allowed (among other categories). Quinn stated Smith rarely matched up certain corners on specific receivers. So Quinn said Smith being willing to do this showed he was at wit’s end trying to figure out how to fix his defense.

Quinn also added he didn’t blame Grimes but didn’t think that was a good look to openly admit his salary was an excuse not to shadow Brown.

Joe will just say this: Quinn might be onto something with the future financial angle but fear was unlikely a factor. Joe vividly remembers Grimes covering Odell Beckham the season before and Grimes locked him up.

You can watch the full discussion between Quinn and Kannell in the CBS video below.

And it wouldn’t be Grimes first ‘business decision’. He held himself out of a playoff game for Atlanta because he was nicked and didn’t want to risk his next contract, which turned out to be with Miami. The Miko influence is clear – it’s not about integrity or dedication. It’s about money.

lets continue an end to the tampa bay falcons and lets not become the tampa bay cardinals!!!!!!

Sad…the way he is going out and will be remembered….he and DJax can start up a car wash chain in retirement….Washed Up and Washed Out

This whole thing is absolutely BLOWING MY MIND. I am truly disgusted. Grimes piss poor attitude only confirms to me that not only did the coaches need to go but many of our players. The attitudes in the lockerroom STINK.

  6. Pryda..sec147 Says:

Karma coming for the Grimes !

  7. gracelivin Says:

Grimes stunk at the cornerback position, he blew more plays than he ever made. I don’t know how many times I saw him running away from the ball carrier instead of trying to make a tackle. Got burnt on every double move by any receiver. the only plays he made were on under thrown balls or some in the flat that he jumped, but usually he was a step behind and SCARED to tackle anyone.

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

I can remember more games in recent memory where he deserved to get benched. Watching defenses where corners set a hard edge and made tackles
tells the story. Mr. “Let somebody else do it” sets the edge by trying to turn the runner in so somebody else could make the tackle and he gets the assist.
Passive run support and slipping pass coverage skills are what you get from him now.

  9. Hodad Says:

Please Joe, stop torturing us with pictures, and articles of Grimes, Koetter, and any other loser that won’t be part of the team moving forward. We all need to look to a brighter future, not be constantly reminded of our sorry past. You do realize bringing up Grimes reminds us all of the meathead who begged him to come back, and was not justly fired.

  10. SB Says:

Bullspit!!!! You signed the Damn contract! You accepted the Salary.
    Now DO YOUR JOB!!

  11. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I will repeat what I said, the other day.

Unfortunately, we as Bucs fans have discovered that Brent Grimes is a complete loser. He is a gutless teammate and he completely soiled any good memories we had of him even playing here.

    Good riddance, Brent.

Sorry Hodad, no can do. Without looking and studying the past, we cannot learn from mistakes made and to avoid them in the future. Plus, Joe thinks readers want to know what the hell was going on behind the scenes and why the team stunk so bad when coaches constantly crowed about all the talent the team had.

Also, this helps shed light onto the job Jason Licht has done. If coaches aren’t putting players in proper positions to win, how can we blame Licht for doing a bad job? He’s not coaching.

  13. TexBuc Says:

Time to move on in the secondary. High priority should be improving both offensive and defensive lines this offseason.

  14. Maze Says:

    Brent is Miko’s bitch

  15. AJ Says:

Can this be the last Brent Grimes article ever please??? He is history and has been for 2 seasons now.

  16. Buc4evr Says:

Wow, cut him today if he isn’t already gone. Totally disgusting.

After he admitted this, how can any NFL team will sign him?

Like to hear Miko justify what her husband did…..

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Enough of these loser FAs…..let’s draft or trade who we need or get a younger/cheaper FA with desire like Nassib

  18. Not there yet Says:

He never shadowed the best receivers in his own division and he wasn’t worth the the money in the first place. It was a bad look to be so dependent on a 35 year old corner to begin with. Too many reasons to fire Koetter to count at this point. Just a bad look for Jason Licht to that he wouldn’t consider paying a young guy or going after one of the top rookie corners in the draft

  19. JJV Says:

It is only fair for the whole team to be able to have Grimes’ attitude. If you are getting paid as a #2 receiver refuse to play as a #1 if Mike Evans goes down. Same thing if you are a backup with a lower salary, refuse to play as a starter. Also, if they want you to play a position that is not your primary one on your contract, forget about it. It is all about business and the next potential contract. Most of all , we don’t want the players having their “whole vibe f***ed up the whole year.” Every successful team tries to avoid that at all costs.

  20. lokog Says:

he was scared us the “fans” saw it the players did to hes a plain bi@ch now his mommy might get on here and defend her little girl. watch djax do the same thing when hes traded for a bag of peanuts.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Quinn is an idiot.

I have no doubt no that Grimes did not give 100%, but I don’t think Quinn has the reason right.

  22. Loyaltotheend Says:

This is what happens when you coerce a player out of retirement who wasn’t sure they wanted to play

Bad signing to bring back a guy who thought he was a #2 corner for 7 million

  23. Deborah Hall Says:

IOKOG, it seems you don’t have a life, Brent is not there, so why are you still taking about him. Yes, I am his mommy and since I have a son, I would ask that anything you have to say you address it to him. Oh, you can’t because he is not on social media and he could care less what you say. You all on here are so brave that you use fake names. No weapon formed against him shall prosper. If you only knew the real truth, you would be very quiet.

I would also like to thank the nice Buccaneer fans that I met and some have been to our house, have a Happy New Year

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

‘If you only knew the real truth, you would be very quiet.”

    Please Deborah, Fill us in……

  25. Dubcity06 Says:

To me, the reason doesnt matter. Thats weak and soft and I’d never want players like that on my team. The so little fight in this Bucs team. That starts with the guys Litch is deciding to target. Reminds me DSmith quitting and loafing over and over

  26. upthegut Says:

Grimes should donate the $7 million he got this year to charity. I suggest a fund for battered and abused men. He can relate to that!

  27. lokog Says:

Deborah Hall continues to make excusea for her baby girl the fact is he couldn’t man up “the eye in the sky never lie” just so you know I don’t have a social media I don’t do that stuff I only come on here cuz I root for this team. and the truth is your baby signed a contract to play football but was to timid to be a MAN

  28. stpetebucsfan Says:

The fear I saw in Brent that disturbed me most of all was he never saw a tackle if he could possibly avoid…I think some of that was just normal physical fear…he’s a little guy.

Quinn’s explanation makes perfect sense and in fact it’s pretty much what Brent said…want me to cover top receivers then pay me top money. It was always about the Benjamins.

  29. Slugglife Says:

    Gracelivin

Grimes was taught to seal the edge so somebody else could make the tackle.

He ain’t no MF’in Ronde Barber. Grimes momma got mad when somebody called him a thief. Turns out he just took the money.

    Sorry MFER.

  30. Slugglife Says:

Sorry Joes. I’ll clean up the language.

Grimes attitude and his millions just aggravates the hell out of me. Guess he doesn’t know how much money we spend to go to games.

  31. Danglin71 Says:

Can we just stop talking about Grimes! He’s really not worth it. I used to have a lot of respect for him , but not now. He can just fade off into the sunset and take his wife with him. That would be a great business decision cause no other NFL team wants to hear that come out of a players mouth.

  32. Wesley Says:

This guy was a true team player.
