Meddling Once More?

January 7th, 2019

Wielding influence.

He may be at it again.

There may be no more respected human being in the NFL than former Bucs coach Father Dungy. But sometimes, it seems he is always sticking his beak into others’ business.

Take America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Father Dungy worked hard and long to make sure the Bucs never picked Jameis, instead pushing brittle checkdown artist Marcus Mariota mainly because Father Dungy’s son played with Mariota at Oregon.

And of course, we know how Father Dungy advocated for Team Glazer to select Chip Kelly as to succeed Raheem Morris.

Now, if Albert Breer of theMMQB.com is to be believed — and Joe does — it seems there may be a delay in the Bucs hiring front-runner for the coaching vacancy, Bruce Arians, because Father Dungy is squeezing Team Glazer to hire Jim Caldwell. This was discussed three weeks ago in great detail on the Ira Kaufman Podcast.

Joe is on record being supportive of Caldwell. The Bucs sure could do worse than hire Caldwell.

Joe has no idea why Caldwell gets raked over the coals by national writers, but the dude wins. Shoot, he won 11 games in Detroit with Matthew Stafford. That’s a helluva job.

In Joe’s eyes, the right hire is Arians unless Team Glazer goes bold and hires Rams quarterback coach Zac Taylor or maybe Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

    Dungy needs to stay out of it. Point blank.

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

    LOL….It’s a Buc Fan Life…..Strife !

  3. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

    Jim Caldwell = 6-10

  4. FowlBall Says:

    I’ve never understood Dungy’s continued interest in the Bucs. I mean the Glazers walked you to your car, Tony! Please cool it!

  5. On the rise Says:

    No thanks!

  6. TexBuc Says:

    I am not against Caldwell, but would rather try Eric Bienemy if we can’t get Arians.

  7. University of Seffner Says:

    Jim Caldwell isn’t what we need.

  8. Pablo Says:

    Pablo says that Tony Dungy is the greatest coach in team history. A Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winner should be listened to. He is a good man, not a clown like Dirk Koetter.

  9. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    We love ya Coach Dungy and appreciate all that you did here.

    But please stop, on this one.

    Jim Caldwell (although a very good coach candidate) is just not the right fit for us, right now.

    Bruce Arians is literally a perfect fit for Tampa Bay for a number of reasons, and I believe he can get this thing finally turned around.

    …. just like you once did, Coach Dungy.

  10. Troy Says:

    Why not solve the issue by bringing Caldwell in and putting him on staff? It could be a benefit.

  11. Maze Says:

    Haha and Gruden had to fix his mess

  12. BucEmUp Says:

    If they hire caldwell im done. Thisnis ridiculously insane to even cbsider anyone over bruce arians. I swear to god uf they fock this up aaahhhjjjjnrrrrggghjnnnnaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Defense Rules Says:

    @Joe … “Father Dungy is squeezing Team Glazer to hire Jim Caldwell.” Love it Joe. How to keep the pot sizzling. And BTW, it was a REALLY NICE TOUCH showing Tony in a Buccaneers jacket with the caption ‘Wielding influence’.

    Seriously doubt that Tony Dungy has any more influence with the Glazer Boyz than you or I do (I know mine’s pegged at zero; don’t know about yours). And yes, Tony wanted Mariota over Winston, but I seriously doubt it was “MAINLY because Father Dungy’s son played with Mariota at Oregon.” Tend to think that Tony is a quite a bit more football savvy than that.

    Looking at this article, I’m now unsure who you REALLY want for our next HC. You say that “the right hire is Arians” BUT … then you caveat the dickens out of it with “UNLESS Team Glazer goes bold and hires Rams quarterback coach Zac Taylor of maybe Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.” So are those two preferred over Arians in your mind? I’m not even sure now that you wouldn’t prefer Caldwell over Arians based on him doing a “helluva job” in Detroit.

  14. JIMMY T Says:

    SO now all of a sudden we are to believe the Glazers hang on every word Tony DUNGY says? Give me a break joe! If ANYTHING is holding up the hiring of Arians it’s Arians!! It’s nice to be wanted but when the job is offered if u have any doubts this happens. Maybe he is firming up his staff! He has stated that he DOES NOT WANT TO CALL PLAYS, so maybe the person he wants for those duties is not on the same page! My point is ANY DELAY is NOT coming from Tony DUNGY! What a joke

  15. RyJo Says:

    So the Glazers are listening to diverse opinions before making a decision. Explain to me why this is a bad thing?

  16. Fartman Says:

    Jim Caldwell… zzz boring.

  17. Jason Says:

    Go away, Dungy. Caldwell????? You can’t be serious. Maybe as a coordinator, but not head coach. Although I’m not 100% convinced about Arians’, he’s much better than any of the other names floated so far…..other than maybe Harbaugh?

  18. Waterboy Says:

    Caldwell is a good coach also but the negative on him is he coaches conservative like Dungy. Not too agressive or much of a risk taker but I do agree the Bucs could do much worse than Caldwell but I don’t see him as a guy that would change their culture.

  19. ben Says:

    WHo else wants Arians besides the bucs ??who ???

  20. Defense Rules Says:

    @Maze … “Haha and Gruden had to fix his mess.” LOL Maze. Chucky wins a SuperBowl here thanks to Dungy’s #1 defense (Gruden’s 2002 offense was #18), and then he goes 45-51 in the 6 years that he’s our coach after 2002, and yet you credit Chucky with ‘fixing Dungy’s mess’. That’s cherry.

  21. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    ben Says:
    “WHo else wants Arians besides the bucs ??who ???”

    ~~~~~~~~
    Who wouldn’t, ben? Kind of a silly question.
    Arians made it clear that he was only interested in the Browns job… until the Buccaneers one came open. He was interested in any others.
  22. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    (wasn’t)
  23. Bucs fans short memories Says:
    The game has passed Dungy by. His analysis on Sunday nights is terrible. He wants nice god fearing choir boys and his friends to get jobs over talent and others that may be better fits. I cringe everytime fans mention his name a President. He will ruin an organization.
  24. Joe Blahak Says:
    Arians or bust…..
  25. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    Bucs fans short memories Says:
    “The game has passed Dungy by. His analysis on Sunday nights is terrible.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Definitely DO NOT agree with that one.

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

    “In Peytom Mannings prime years in Indianapolis Colts, No one stopped Manning from more superbowls than Tony Dungy”

    Kobe Faker

  27. Not there yet Says:

    Matt Stafford is a bad quarterback to you for some reason but you love Winston, he’s way better than Winston at this point. He’s beyond just flashing every once in a while. But that would be really weak if the glazers let anyone second guess this hire.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    if the decision is “delayed”, its because kris richard is our guy and he’s preparing for the playoffs…..lol….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  29. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Not there yet Says:
    “(Matt Stafford is) way better than Winston”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Definitely not.
  30. Christopher Schiefen Says:
    Caldwell had 2 shots and he was fired twice. Arians has the exact opposite record.
  31. Stevbobucfan Says:
    Thats not gonna happen. Caldwell is one of Dungy ex coaches and a friend. So I can see why Dungy would have recommended Caldwell. Arians did the same thing when he left the Cardinals when he recommended that his DC get the job after he retired. Talking about Dungy sticking his nose somewhere, These football people always instigating or blowing stuff out of proportion. What Dungy got to do with who the Glazers hire? Did the team hire Dungy in the front office and I didn’t know about it?
  32. Stevbobucfan Says:
  33. 813bucboi Says:
    demon
    bruce is interested in the browns but their not interested in him…..if they were, they wouldve brought him in for an interview…..and no other team is interested in bruce…..his interview date wouldve been made public just like everyone else…..just like we knew for a week that kris richard was going to be interviewed on sunday…..
    it all points to kris imo…..glazers “planned” to announce on tuesday, the cowboys win saturday night, licht interviews kris sunday…..monday JBF says the “announcement is delayed…..
    im just surprised joe tried to blame tony and not “inept lovie”….lol…
    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  34. Jerseybuc Says:
    Last thing this team needs is a players coach. We need an offensive mind and a QB centric coach. Arians will take charge of this team and get us right. And maybe just as important we will have new eyes on this D that has underperformed for years.
  35. Destinjohnny Says:
    No coach can win with Jason Licht as the gm
    I’d rather have a great gm and an average coach
    Then what we will have, a crap gm and good coach
    Why do colleges make such a big deal with recruiting ?
    It’s a players league
  36. Stevbobucfan Says:
    I am with you waterboy. It’s these damn analyses, when they can’t get information which we know they can’t get from the Glazers, they start to create stuff by guessing at what’s happening
  37. stpetebucsfan Says:
    I’m not sure what is upsetting everybody. I want Arians. Caldwell would be down the list for me but I could accept him.
    TD is a fan now like the rest of us. He has to be careful because he’s now also a national broadcaster and can’t appear to be too prejudiced towards the Bucs. But I believe the Bucs…perhaps Pittsburgh are his favorite teams.
    And so as a fan with admittedly a much greater rep than any of us…Tony has an opinion. Shezam. Big deal. He’s entitled to that opinion just like were are to ours. The Bucs didn’t pay attention with Mariotta or Kelly so why worry? If the Bucs hire Caldwell it won’t be just TD who wanted it.
  38. ManzielMadness Says:
    Not a lot of two time coach of the year guys lining up to coach the Bucs. Tell Tony thanks for your opinion but you don’t work here anymore!
  39. 813bucboi Says:
    BEN
    you are correct my friend!!!!!!!…..
    very easy to see the bucs are doing the same thing cincy did with hue jackson…..
    only 1 team has interviewed hue….and that was because he knows folks in the front office…..same with bruce…he only got this interview because he knows licht…..
    bruce says he’s interested in the browns job and no one from cleveland calls him….they select their top candidates and told bruce to stay in his rocking chair…..
    so a team like cleveland would rather hire an inexperienced HC, mike mccarthy or stick with gregg williams….lol….
    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  40. Iron Wombat Says:
    I don’t think Tony has any juice with team Glazer.
    and “brittle checkdown artist Marcus Mariota ” is my new favorite nickname from Joe.
  41. Owlykat Says:
    So Caldwell with Stafford didn’t even make the playoffs. Nobody is seeking him so Tony is just trying to get him a job. Rediculous! If the Glazers take Caldwell over Arians they will have to give out free tickets to show Bucs Fans in the seats at all except the ones with bags over their heads. Sign a contract with Arians and make your splash announcement tomorrow! You need to strike now so Arians can bring top assistants with him. If Arians would accept Richards as his DC and Assistant HC, offer Richards that deal and pay him well!
    Licht needs to talk the Glazer Boys to ignore Dungy’s counsel.
  42. Stevbobucfan Says:
    Bucs fans don’t worry, it Arians, if it’s a holdup it’s in the contract. Like I said before, what Dungy got to do with the Glazers hiring Arians. Did Dungy get front office position with the bucs that I don’t know abou
  43. Michael Wright Says:
    Luv ya Tony D for getting this Buc team turned around. However, you have already been inducted. Your name is on Ray Jay forever and into the Hall. You are one hellava guy. But Mr. Caldwell would not be my choice for ur Bucs. I’d put him as like my 5th or 6th choice.
  44. Rob Says:
    Arians > Caldwell.
  45. Bucsace Says:
    Tony is still the Godfather of the black coach’s fraternity
  46. 813bucboi Says:
    owl
    caldwell did make the playoffs with matt….so your wrong there….
    next caldwell has had a couple interviews….which is more than what bruce has received….
    no one is seeking bruce…so what did he do, seek his BFF in licht to make it seem like bucs are interested to draw up interest from other teams….
    oldest trick in the book…..thats what got dirk promoted and smitty an extension…..
    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!
  47. D-Rome Says:
    Matt Stafford is better than Jameis by just about every statistical measure. Stafford has never had the amount of targets that Jameis has had.
  48. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    ^^ No offense, D-Rome, but you can definitely have him. I would not trade JW for Stafford and a draft pick. Matthew has no passion for the game, no leadership skills, and will never be a winner.
    JW has so much more upside than anything Stafford has turned out to be.
  49. Bucamania Says:
    Heck no, please not Jim Caldwell.
  50. JesusHChrist Says:
    This is leverage to hire BA on resonable terms. Additionally Tony has the respect of the Glazers and his opinion should at least be considered #riskit
  51. Sapp STFU Says:
    Umm, NO!
    Time for Bucs to hire proven winners, not retreads or projects.
  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    FowlBall Says
    “I mean the Glazers walked you to your car…”
    Not accurate.
  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    I’m not for the Jim Caldwell hire either, but I would take him over Kris Richard. But I prefer neither.
    I also think we can do better than Arians.
  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    Joe, Matt Stafford is a good quarterback. If we’d have had him last year, we’d have a winning record.
    But I want to give Jameis more time regardless.
  55. Richard Dickson Says:
    How can Dungy squeeze Team Glazer? What’s he gonna do? He’s got no power over anything this team does.
  56. D-Rome Says:
    Agreed Bonzai on both Arians and Stafford. This team should not hire a coach and *then* have a discussion on who the heir-apparent will be. Arians is a fine coach and if the Bucs hire him I would support the hire, but this team needs a long term solution. This team needs a guy that we think could be here for 5+ years. Arians is not that guy.
    As for Stafford, he is better. Not that I’d want to trade a draft pick for the guy. For some reason Joe has been piling on Stafford as if he’s a bad QB. Stafford had a down year this year. He hasn’t had an elite receiver since Calvin Johnson retired. Jameis can’t say the same thing and even with all the targets he’s still not eclipsed 30 TD passes in a season.
  57. StoutGospel Says:
    Dungy doesn’t have any pull with Team Glazer, and also in light of the way that they jettisoned him in the middle of the night. Breer doesn’t know either.
    JOHN. HARBAUGH.
    Team Glazer, please have Licht put in the competing bid, before Stephen Ross has JOHN kicking it on South Beach.
  58. upthegut Says:
    The dungy agenda !!!
  59. SOEbuc Says:
    Joe
    “There may be no more respected human being in the NFL than former Bucs coach Father Dungy.”
    Some liberals in the NFL might feel different. Tony banned his gay son from the family who soon after killed himself.
  60. Bucko40 Says:
    For all of Winston’s stats and Talents he’s only won 21 games with no post season wins. Mariota hasn’t been a Stat machine but he just wins games. 3 winning seasons in a row and a playoff win. Bucs fans would scream from the rooftops for a playoff berth. Has Winston ever really beaten a team outside of the Saints with a winning record? Mariota beat the Eagles and Patriots this year. Oh and by the way Mariota has 30 wins to his name already.
  61. Clodhopper Says:
    Hopefully his meddling is as effective as the Russian’s meddling. ie, changed no votes.
  62. Stevbobucfan Says:
    Again bucs fan don’t worry about the nonsense these football analysts are throwing out there. Like I said before, they don’t have anything to go on so they create a happening with any small bit of information. If anything, Caldwell may have been mentioned as a OC under Arians because the Browns have blocked his old OC Kitchens from interviewing
  63. German Buc Says:
    @Bucko40: Yeah, handing a ball off and watching your RB taking it 99 yards down the field is a helluva job of the QB! Sure no other QB in the league is able to do that.
  64. FairMinded Says:
    I feel like between Arians, Bienemy and Richard we are downright spoiled for choice. Three killer coaches. Pick one and let’s goooo!!!
  65. FairMinded Says:
    SOEbuc that’s a ridiculous accusation. Reports say his girlfriend at the time is the one who found him and called 911. James Dungy appears to have been clinically depressed and tried multiple times to kill himself
  66. 813bucboi Says:
  67. Zam Says:
    Now I wish Tony Dungy was team president.
  68. Rod Munch Says:
    I’d let Dungy meddle all he wants if he wants to come back in an official role for the team. As for this story he’s pitching a former underling and friend – and that’s literally what you’d think someone with good character would do if they truly believed what they were saying.
    Caldwell is a pretty boring hire – but so was Dungy – and that turned out incredibly well. Sometimes boring is OK.
    With that said right now I’d want Arians since it means we are not rebuilding – it means the Glazers want to win now, not sure through years more of half empty buildings and 5-11 records. With Caldwell I don’t know how he’d do – but he isn’t Dungy. In fact if Dingy wants to give Caldwell a job I say Dungy come back and coach the team and then he can bring Caldwell with him.
  69. joestang Says:
    dungy is overrated he won 1 super bowl with loaded teams. if he wasnt such a nice guy people would really see that he was a stubborn coach that would not change.
  70. cgmaster Says:
    Buck o 40, Mariota hasn’t even been able to finish half of those games while being out another 6. And yeah, his 13 TOTAl tds ;last year really inspired the playoff football the Titans played. People and their damn W/L crap tied way too much to the QB. The titans win IN SPITE of Mariota.
  71. Howard Cosell Says:
    Arians won’t happen.
    He’s already creeped out about the prospect of working for scheme glazer
    return to a Bucslife in 1…2…..3…..
    Ummmm…whatever you wanna tell yourself to be wrong. You can Google “Tony Dungy’s gay son.” He’s very homophobic against gay players in the NFL. Was voted Outsports’ “A$$hole of the year on 2014.”
  77. SOEbuc Says:
