“He Pretty Much Laid Down On This Team”

January 20th, 2019

Keeping DeSean Jackson.

In the mind of a former Bucs player, the Bucs are better off holding their noses and finding a way to keep malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson than to toss him away.

That’s the word from popular local radio personality and former Bucs guard Ian Beckles.

In his fun and informative podcast, “In the Trenches,” Beckles made it crystal clear that Jackson is not the kind of teammate he would roll with but the Bucs are a better team with Jackson, despite his cancerous ways.

“He pretty much laid down on this team at the end of the year,” Beckles said of Jackson. “I mean, he never looked happy on the football field wearing a Buccaneers uniform. never.

“I am not a DeSean Jackson fan, if you listen to this podcast. I am not a DeSean Jackson fan and nor should anybody be. … But it is better to have a coach that can deal with anybody and the ones that come to mind are Bill Parcells and [Bill] Belichick, obviously. The Steelers have kind of had that reputation but they are kind of losing it.

“We should want our new guy [Bruce Arians] to come in here and work with talent. And to be able to deal with talent. The teams that are successful are the ones that can bring in ballistic, outlandish players. And we need to turn into that. And Bruce Arians needs to turn into the guy where if you had issues elsewhere, come in here and Bruce Arians will get you right. He shouldn’t be scared to go out and get some of those outlandish players. DeSean Jackson is that. When you watch film, DeSean Jackson, on film, is a player that makes a team better. No doubt about that.

“As a Buccaneer fan, we really shouldn’t be wishing for him to go. As a Bucs fan, I get how people don’t want to see his ugly-@ss face any more because it hasn’t signified anything positive. But as a Buccaneer fan, we should also hope Bruce Arians has the ability to calm down DeSean Jackson and use his ability because what is going to happen is if you let DeSean Jackson go, he is going to go off somewhere. And you are going to go, ‘What the hell did we do?'”

First off, Joe doesn’t believe for one second Jackson laid down like Beckles claimed. Jackson was hurt. Had a messed up thumb and injured an Achilles. Joe likes Beckles but let’s not get carried away here.

Well, how the hell is Arians supposed to play a guy who doesn’t contribute much (positively) not to mention his salary is $10 million when the most consistent wide receiver on your team is an unrestricted free agent (Adam Humphries)?

Never mind this same overrated receiver, Jackson, is doing his best to Pearl Harbor the very quarterback Arians is trying to rebuild mentally.

It’s bad enough Jackson goes on national television calling for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to be benched. Now someone from Jackson’s camp (perhaps Jackson himself) is planting information with his buddies on the NFL Network to make Jameis look like the rat and fall guy in this.

How exactly can Arians justify keep a guy like Jackson around?

And the more Joe thinks of this, the more Joe believes Team Glazer may already have decided Jackson’s fate.

Simply put, Joe is fully expecting Jackson to have to buy a state fishing license somewhere else in a few weeks.

Use that $10 million Jackson was going to pocket to keep Humphries and buy John Brown, another 4.3-40 guy like Jackson who put up the same kind of numbers Jackson did last year.

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages readers to forward Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

I stopped reading at “Ian Beckles”.

So I have no idea what the rest of this article says, lol.

  2. “That guy” Says:

Great picture joe, he looks like he’s coming down from a 4 day crack binge.

Pretty SURE Jamies Pearl Harbored HIMSELF when he lied about grabbing that woman’s crotch!!!!! Then came in and threw FOUR INTERCEPTIONS against the sorry @s$ Benglas!

John Brown??? YAWN!!!!! Guy only had two explosive games this season and has VERY low thrown to / catch stats

Jezus Christ you guys are gonna run our only chance at making the 2020 Super Bowl out of town

  5. Buc4life Says:

Ur right Joe. We can pay Humphries and John Brown, get better results and still have money for another free agent. And Humphries want to be here.

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

Licht held on to this firecracker too long….should have traded it before it exploded in his face….he knew of the short fuse and history of burning GM’s….I’d love to know which teams his agent wanted to trade him to….probably one of the 4 today…which is why he’ll NEVER come back and will be very difficult to trade now, his his value was 2018 with the final season games and play offs ahead….not all off season…all OTA’s…all training camp…all the early season yawn games…all examples of times he could get injured before the big money games of 2019 play off season…

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How many times do we need this repeat…….Djax is getting far more attention than he deserves……
I thought there was a post yesterday “Djax is gone”……apparently not.

  8. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Desean Jackson had more explosive games in his first FOUR games than John Brown did in 16 games

  9. Northend Says:

Won nine games without him in 2016. He is irrelevant in the grand scheme. Talented but not worth the paycheck.

Don’t need his prima donna ,locker room fracturing routine anymore. We can find another speed guy who won’t fight for the ball and jake his routes for a fraction of the cost.

Evans,Godwin,Hump will be just fine as our top 3.

  10. Alanbucsfan Says:

Beckles is right on the money
    You win with talent

  11. BucFamous Says:

Ian Buckles sucks. I wish this site would stop writing an article every time he opens his mouth.

  12. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

pass on jon brown and hump can try and get paid elsewhere bucs need OL & entire defense fixed so spend money there and get jacobs round 2 to be starting RB

  13. dmatt Says:

I can care less about how fast DJax is n how he can stretch the field. Any player that quits on his team in the middle of a play will never b my type of player. He’s a traitor, loser, n coward. I can accept attitudes from guys b n an A hole but quitters, never, ie, ABrown, JRamsey, can’t trust them. Pay Humphries…a true grit type player n bring in John Brown. Please guys DJax is a piece of cancer that is willing to do anything to poison the mind of our younger players n my belief is that he’s getting into the head of MEvans. Jameis is a country guy vs DJax a street City guy. I believe DJax the manipulator got into a young Jameis’ head over the course of the season.

  14. AlteredEgo Says:

Watson may easily be able to replace Hump….tough to see him go…but the Bucs thanks to Licht’s drunken Cap Tab are in dire need of cap $$$$$$$ this year….and the team is chock full of pass catchers

  15. Jean Lafitte Says:

Djax made a comment that the team should stay with the hot hand and then was targeted, characterized and then portrayed by the local media as a malcontent He was then thrashed publicly by all the Winston supporters on social media. We can’t keep creating controversies that should never had been one in the first place. Had that comment been ignored we wouldn’t have this vindictive behavior by certain Buc fans. Djax wants out now because he doesn’t feel welcome. All the good things he has done since he got here is overshadowed by one fateful comment. More media induced vomit.

  16. Avejoe Says:

I agree. Dump Jackson and his crybaby attitude, then use that money to keep Humphries.

  17. Ndog Says:

Bucs Fan #7423 do us a favor and tell us Djax numbers for the rest of the games Fitz started AFTER week 2 when their was tape of our offense? Again only the games Fitz started. I’ll wait and then let’s see how valid this ridiculous point is.

    _____

You mean after we stopped using Djax properly???

Every player’s numbers would suck if you didn’t use them properly

Even the greatest NFL player of all time, 5 time super bowl winning, Tom Brady’s numbers would suck if he had to run a Lamar Jackson’s style offense

Djax purpose is to stretch the defense, if the defense doesn’t stretch (like it did in the first two games) then Djax catches DEEP pass for touchdown.

But when defenses stretch, that creates openings in the defense for short-intermediate passes to players like godwin, humphries, oj, brate, and even the running back (to run the ball) to keep the chains moving. AKA death with a thousand cuts.

But unfortunately our baby brained idiot quarterback Jamies Winston can’t complete a DEEP pass to Djax so defenses don’t have to worry about Jackson.

Djax makes our offense COMPLETE, plus he can return punts for touchdowns if he wants

whether you like it or not

  19. StoutGospel Says:

    @BucFamous….

    YUP!!

  20. Ndog Says:

Bucs Fan #7423 like always you didn’t answer the question. I asked what his numbers were WITH FITZ after game 2 which has nothing to do with Jameis. Could that be because it destroys this ridiculous argument that DJax was great with Fitz? For 2 games yes but what about the rest? I’ll wait…

  21. Durango 95 Says:

He’s the third best receiver on a team loaded at the position. Sure he’s got a niche but his malcontent attitude is greater than his contributions. Been that way his whole career. No matter what the player brings on the field you have to ask yourself, at what cost? He’s just not worth the hassle.

    —-

Both quarterbacks are trash. Fitz is just a backup so he’s supposed to be trash. But at least Fitz could complete deep passes to Djax.

    What’s your point??

  23. StessT Says:

    Bucs Fan #7423 said—
“Djax makes our offense COMPLETE, plus he can return punts for touchdowns if he wants”

Side note here — I never understood why he had a choice. Like when did football become a game where the players can decide how/if they’ll contribute?

    Rhetorical question.

  24. Couch Fan Says:

Its funny these know-it-alls like the fool above me make the deep ball the end all be all of being a QB…. Its also funny Winston has no deep ball issues with anyone other than Djax but yet are somehow convinced its all on Jameis. Not to mention all the locker room stuff from Djax that they completely ignore. Just another misinformed complainter(hater) using any reason to hate on somone without any unbias facts.

  25. Fire Light Says:

    If DJax comes back. Boycot

  26. Cgmaster27v Says:

Bucs fan, his point is you DONT have one. Stop with the fitz could hit him argument, after game 2 fitz couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. And then you break out the he wasn’t used properly excuse. Ndog and my points are you continue to talk out of your ass with nothing to back it up.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

DJAX has already worn out his welcome with three teams now.

It’s pretty obvious…it’s time to cut bait.

Two games at the beginning of the season do not mean squat!
Defenses quickly adjusted safety positioning and that was the end of DJAX with JW OR Fitzmagic. It was NOT either of our QB’ it was defenses adjusting and it’s not that hard when a WR who play very cowardly and has NOTHING but speed.

Close to half of his 774 yards came in the first two games. He had ONE more game over 100 yards in game 4…after that defenses simply adjusted their safety play and bye bye DJAX.

Time to cut bait…cost is nowhere near production and if you factor in attitude and his relationship with our franchise QB he’s a net negative not positive…Ohhh and did I mention he costs ten million! That could pay Hump with money left over for an OL.

  28. firethecannons Says:

DJax is not worth a 10million hit–was not worth it year 1 or year 2 and he aint worth it now-any draft pick is better than him.

  29. OneBuc55 Says:

Great point Ndog…Bucsfan 7423 can you please support your outlandish claim regarding Jackson with stats; we’re all waiting…

It’s funny how Jamies has chemistry with every receiver on the roster except MeSean…It has to be something to that…The one thing that all of the Bucs receivers have in common is that they’re all scrappy high-effort guys…The exception is Desean; it only takes one bad apple…

  30. Jerry Jones Says:

Heckles, that what his last name should be.

You guys are so STUPID. Can’t see the forest for the TREES!!!!!

Whether it’s Fitz or Jamies it doesn’t matter, what matters is the QUARTERBACK PLAY.

And from what I said, it’s the QUARTERBACKS fault for not knowing how to use Djax properly which I already explained how to.

You guys are so stuck on “is it Fitz or is it Jamies” that you can’t comprehend how route combinations work and how building an offensive scheme around Djax explosiveness opens up the entire playing field if you have a competent quarterback

    WHICH WE DON’T!!!!

Did I simplify that enough for you guys?? Or do I have to dumb it down even more???

Joe doesn’t allow post with links

All you have to is go to the link Joe gave in his article to John Brown 2018 stats, then on that same site find Djax stats then compare the two.

You will see clear as day that John Brown only had 2 random @s$ explosive games all season and had very catching percentage of balls thrown to him

Then you will see in Djax first 4 games Djax had 3 explosive games

John Brown is garbage, NO THANKS!!!

  33. Dapostman Says:

    #7423,

John Brown’s 2018 season was played with a running rookie QB and Joe Flacco. John Brown is more than capable of replacing MeSean for half the price. News flash!!!!! John Brown can stretch the field. MeSean has played a full 16 game schedule 2 out of his 11 seasons. Availability is as important as ability.

2015 stats with a healthy Carson Palmer and BA as his coach.

  34. Armor1977 Says:

If Jackson stays with the bucs this year, this team will be horrible again. He is a diva and cares about team “Me”. Logic would tell you that if the only receiver that cant connect with Winston is Jackson then Jackson has to be the problem. look at the film, he hardly tries for the ball unless hes wide open. And then blames the QB. If Jackson was so great why would the eagles and redskins let him walk away? He is a one trick pony and his act is getting old.

  35. Oneilbucs Says:

Man when you can run the ball you can win.

    Game 16: JW 4-1, 24 yds, 0 TD

    Game 17: Did not play

  41. jerseybuc Says:

There are plenty of ways to lay down Joe. Not fighting for a contested ball. Not finishing your route, or continuing to run it to emphasize you are OPEN 3 seconds after the QB releases the ball to show him up. Not playing through injury. Hard to tell with that one. But it is part of the deal with a dog who lays down. I realize how talented he is, but honestly, for his salary, and considering how good our WR corp is, let him walk. Not worth the trouble. You also need some young blood to play for under the average contract in order to be able to pay the big stars.
Just seems like the right time to cut bait.
