JPP Says Bucs Mentality Is Good, Players Have To Prevent Wandering Minds

November 14th, 2018

There were plenty of questions this afternoon for Jason Pierre-Paul in the Bucs locker room related to him playing his former team, the Giants, on Sunday.

Joe was much more interested in the guys wearing pewter and red.

Joe asked JPP about the mentality of a Bucs team that’s lost six of seven games.

JPP was direct and acknowledged that losing can get in your head.

“The mentality of the team is fine, man,” JPP said. “Like I say, man, it’s all about the players, the coaches, too. But we got to to play the game, man. Times like this, you know you just got to step up. The leaders got to step up. Myself, that’s all I can do, man. Hopefully guys follow behind me, and if they’re doing something wrong I let them know. Because in times like this your mind can wander, but it’s crucial that you got to stay focused, man, because we’re not out of it. You know what I mean? Just like the Giants think they’re not out of it. You know? And they completely right; you just never know how things will shift or turn.”

Pierre-Paul has played on losing teams and great teams with the Giants. He has the experience.

Joe was intrigued by JPP’s comments. If JPP knows losing can affect a guy like himself, a tough guy player with a freakish motor who came back from blowing up his hand, that what might it do to the typical Buccaneer?

On the field, it looks to Joe like too many Bucs have let their minds “wander,” to use JPP’s word.

Man, I really like what he said man. It’s like, man, yeah we should be winning more games man.
JPP….. I do like you man, you be da man.

Guess that’s why we haven’t heard much from him on the field the past two games then…

win this week, win all the home games and a road upset near the end of the season and it’s 9-7…doable 🙂 never say die

jpp needs to light a fire under the azz of vea, that slow wandering blob of confusion he plays next to on the line…

who is worse vea or rojo…

put both of those guys in a raft, toss them into the bay, give them paddles and say beat it

Joe Blahak “ never say die “ ? Most people put down a sh!t sandwich after the first bite . I guess you take it down to the crumbs. This team looks very disinterested ever since the 2nd half of the browns game. This team needs a new identity not just throw the ball down field for chunk yards. Get a coach who believes in running the ball or a GM that does. Why do you think our defense sucks maybe all the extra possessions our offense gives up.

JPP is the only one worth a damn on this defense in my opinion.

i dont think losing is getting to him as much as his team mates not caring about losing….i thik that is the thing that bothering JPP…..

If the same Giants team that beat San Fran on MNF shows up, there is Zero chance we win.

Dont be so hard on vea. He finally got to the qb last week. It’s a work in progress. Dont forget he basically missed all of camp and quite a few games. Maybe his first taste of blood will get him going. GO BUCS!!

I still believe this team has more talent than we want to accept.

The team sucks…but there are enough players with talent that we should not suck.

Problem is we are incredibly weak above the neck…and for many of our players they’re operating with an empty chest cavity…no heart at all.

There is plenty of choking going on right now…lack of concentration, discipline, whatever you wish to call it.

Ultimately this falls on Koetter and Licht. Licht for not doing a better job of due diligence on who he is bringing in…and Koetter for not be able to fire them up properly.

It’s obvious you lack the tenacity required to have been a Bucs’ fan during the creamsicle, winking pirate days. They didn’t win a single game their 1st season. In fact, they lost their first 26 games in the days of 14 game seasons. Talk about a GIANT sh!t sandwich. How many bites would you say there were in that sandwich before finally winning their 27th game? You don’t seem the type that could have toughed it out, as the taste of it would have been just too much to bear.

In fact, for the first 21 seasons, with the exception of an NFL record setting season in 1979 and a couple of hiccoughs in 81, 82 it was an almost non-stop sh!t sandwich until 1997. Only true Bucs’ fans with a cast iron stomach and a clothespin on their noses were able to consume that many sandwiches over such an extended period of time.

But then the sh!t turned to shugar as we were finally rewarded with our day in the sun, and it meant so much more to those of us who had suffered, yet endured through all of those bad, bad years than it did to the johnny come lately nouveau followers who had hopped on the wagon because “now they’re winning.” You sound kinda like one of those.

Well, as Harry Truman said, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Luv JPP’s attitude. You see him always givin 1005 on the field. Wish he could bottle it up and use it like a virus in our locker room. But again..NO EXCUSES. Plug in that replacement and lets roll. Other teams do it every Sunday. Nobody cares if we got injuries. Matter of fact, they happy we do. Ruck up Bucs. Lets go!

  20. Sydney Says:

Um….did he watch himself on last week’s game tape? Because I saw his mind wandering out of position several times and some loafing too. The Giants are going to light the Bucs up this week.

Grt1 Says: “This team needs a new identity not just throw the ball down field for chunk yards. Get a coach who believes in running the ball or a GM that does.”

I doubt it’s so much that Koetter doesn’t believe in running the ball as it is that he sees that we don’t have a roster capable of running the ball. We do, however, have a roster that is stacked with talented WRs and TEs, and Fitz has the accuracy and touch, if given the time, to hit those receivers in stride and throw the ball down the field to them to achieve those “chunk yards” you mentioned that you seem to disdain. That’s why he’s thrown for over 400 yds in 4 of the 5 games he’s completed. (Winston, by the way, has 0 (zero) 400 yd games in the 3 games he started.) Also, the Bucs rank #1 in Total Offense and #1 in Passing Offense.

Now it IS important to be able to run the ball when you want to, but we have a GM who is challenged at being able to identify talent (outside of receivers, which is the one position he’s done well at). He could have had Adrian Peterson for the veteran league minimum salary ($1,015,000 = peanuts). But since he’d just spent a high 2nd round pick on Ronald Jones (LOL) and had P. Barber, he thought we could do without Peterson for $1M, even after seeing up close what he did to the Bucs last season. You can’t make this stuff up.

On top of that, we don’t have the best OL to start with, but you can see that they’re better at pass blocking than they are at run blocking. So you have to go with the hand that’s dealt you. I’m just glad that as much as I’m unhappy with quite a few decisions Koetter’s made as HC, I still have to give him credit as a pretty good OC. You don’t continue to be the #1 offense in the league if you’re not. You can’t say he’s not getting the most out of the talent (or lack of) that Licht has put together for him.

So in saying you want a new identity, what do you suggest? Tear down what’s already assembled to build a run blocking line and maybe go out and pay through the nose, outbidding the rest of the league for an obvious “money player” like L. Bell? Don’t forget the weakest part of the team, by far, is the Defense, which should be given the lion’s share of our draft picks and any free agent acquisitions.

I, for one, don’t wish to sacrifice the level of passing game we’ve built. As Jaws says, “Points come out of the passing game.” Even with that outlier game we just played, we’re still #12 in scoring offense. I don’t wish to return to the Dungyball model of Offense, trying to win 9 – 6, but remember, that was with a great Defense.

So, instead of a wholesale change of identity, let’s stick with the #1 Passing Offense and build the running game as we’re able (along with the Defense).

So true! Looks like all this time, he-whose-name-can’t-be-mentioned for some weird reason by the Joes’ filters (but it starts with a “t” and ends with a “max”), was right about one thing.

The team has been mentally weak for far too long.

  23. ClwJB Says:

Where have the leaders been all year? On either side of the ball…this team has zero mental toughness – a few wins and then splat…faceplant with no recovery in sight

I see a bunch of half speed players acting as aloof as their coach and the others with the deer in the headlights look or just plainly not good enough to be on a NFL field

Lets take Demar as an example, a street FA who worked his tail off to become a starter who is now at the end of his career, hurt multiple times, everyone knows -so what do we do – we take our best guard and move him away, leaving Dotson with the shat show that is Caleb B…hows that working? You know Dotson just shakes his head every other play and thinks about the check…

The highest paid center in FB has ZERO awareness for stunts and blitz pickups, multiple times he has given up the pocket and doesnt even know it until he hears the crowd roar

LT is a complete joke -move him to Guard already, he will NEVER be elite at tackle with his lack of consistent footwork but would be Carl Nicks type at guard OMG who is watching the tapes??????

How about LB, we KNOW Beck is out 8 weeks minimum and we have legit 2 real NFL level LB’s -why bother to sign any true depth….lets watch Taylor and Bond continue to suck out loud…LVD is hurt too….holy smokes Batman

Speaking of depth…how about we go with 3 rookies in the secondary and not bother adding ANY veteran presence – leaving Ryan Smith as your go to veteran depth at CB? How about Whitehead knowing full well Conte sucks, we go with the rook and a FA as back up S

Wont even go to the kicker carousel…

All these people saying have faith – you should face facts, this team is weak is so many areas by a combination of poor roster building and coaches not playing players to their strengths

One offseason and the right coaching staff and this same basic group of players wins 10 games easy

I dream of Arians/Harbaugh combo with Ozzie Newsome jumping on the ship too

I thought paying players millions of $$$’s prevented “wandering minds.“ isn’t that the point?

  26. Grt1 Says:

Ludicrous are you seriously throwing up these irrelevant offensive stats. If you know anything about football , all you have to do is watch the games and this team doesn’t pass the eye test. If you can run the ball and stop the run you have a chance to win , if you can’t do one of those things you have no chance. ThIs GM built this team for the football ignorant fan base who just wants to see points. The saints are a power house because they can run on any down, Carolina is strong because of the running, the Rams are unstoppable because of gurely, the chargers have Gordon, chiefs have hunt ! Learn more about the game before you use this forum irresponsibility. Thanks.

  28. Buc89 Says:

Just imagine if the D-line gave this guy a hand

  29. Defense Rules Says:

I’m continuing to see a double standard in Bucsville. Scapegoat Smitty was sent packing because most felt he did a lousy job coaching this defense … lousy being viewed as giving up way too many points. Whether it was his ‘scheme’ or his ‘play-calling’ or ‘not being able to develop young players’ or ‘not properly using the talent that he had available’ is inconsequential … he didn’t meet his responsibilities as a DC & was shown the door. No excuses.

Fast forward to our offense. Started off the season HOT then petered out (although we did manage to dispatch the Browns handily?). Bucs offense is doing a great job of accumulating yards, but seems to have an aversion to letting the football cross the goal line for some reason. And yet, many folks continue to make excuses for them. QBs throwing INTs at a league-leading pace … how sad. No running game … boo hoo. OLine not blocking worth a hoot & compounding that with mistake after mistake … Oh, we just need to work on ‘execution’ a little bit more.

All horsepuckey. If the measure of a defense’s suckiness (is that really a word?) is that they give up TOO MANY POINTS, then why isn’t the measure of an offense’s ‘suckiness’ the reverse … that they DON’T SCORE ENOUGH POINTS? If Smitty was held responsible for the defense’s woeful performance as its DC, why shouldn’t Koetter be held responsible for the offense’s woeful performance as the OC? Coaches coach and players play … and GOOD TEAMS WIN.

  30. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

*Clears throat and begins GMC hater impression* This guy right here is a LEADER! GMC who? Pfft… forgot that guy was even on the roster. McCoy’s soft. He picks players up off the ground and somehow goes to 6 pro bowls in a row. We should trade him for a 2025 7th round pick (We’ll be lucky if another team is even willing to make that offer). While we’re at it lets trade: Lavonte, Winston, Evans, Brate, Marpet, Howard, and Captain Fear. I never liked that pirate.

  31. Reach87 Says:

Looking for disciplined execution from the offense and defense this week. Tough game but we can win with the same game plan as last week (obviously with better execution). Season is not over! Go Bucs!

  32. Ed Says:

If team decides not to retain Winston, despite what fans in Tampa think, he is worthy of a high draft pick simply because there are GM’s out there that know he hasn’t been coached up by a discipline HC. If anyone could get the turnovers out of him and have an offense more designed with shorter passing, he is good enough to get a #1 or a couple of #2’s from a team that really needs a quarterback. One thing about Winston in his favor is he doesn’t miss many games and has had no serious injuries unlike Teddy Bridgewater or Sam Bradford did.

The following Buccaneers can still be traded as they are under contract at the following salaries through:

    Gerald McCoy- 2022 $15,000,000
    Lavonte David- 2021 $10,000,000
    Cam Brate- 2024 $6,800,000
    DeSean Jackson- 2020 $10,000,000
    Will Ghoulston- 2022 $5,500,000

Due to their ridiculous salaries some may be untradeable. I suppose you could trade Brate as his salary isn’t as high as some other players in his class and I suppose Jackson could be traded because a team wouldn’t be on the hook for his entire contract. They could pay him in 2020 with a “prove it” incentive contact.

McCoy and David will be tough to unload unless there is some creative contractual changes that a team can get their agents to agree to for someone else to take them.

Winston’s $20,000,000 option is interesting because like Jackson, he could be traded and signed to a “prove it” incentive laden contract extension.

No reason for any of these, except maybe Winston, depending on next coaching staff to return.,
