Will Dirk Koetter Listen To Marvin Lewis?

October 24th, 2018

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis

Dirk Koetter will be coaching against one of his idols Sunday, a man who has given him advice over the years.

That would be Marvin Lewis, the Bengals head coach since 2003.

Joe assumes Koetter and Lewis remain close friends. They were in grad school classes together, and Lewis coached for Koetter’s father at Idaho State. They have strong family connections, and two years ago Koetter and Lewis spent time together at an Idaho State fundraiser.

It was there Koetter shared with the Idaho State Journal that his defensive-minded friend gave him guidance that stuck: Air it out.

Among the bits of tactical advice Lewis has given Koetter was one simple piece that stuck out to the new Tampa Bay head coach — “Throw deep.”

“I’m serious,” Koetter said. “Marvin’s a defensive coach. I’m an offensive coach. He said offenses don’t throw deep enough.”

Joe sure hopes Koetter heeds the sage wisdom from Lewis on Sunday. The Bengals defense is bad, 31st-ranked in the NFL, and bad in all phases of defense this season. They’ve even allowed more points than the Bucs have (but they have played one additional game).

Nobody’s worse than Cincinnati on third down; opponents are converting a whopping 56 percent.

Time to use the most lethal weapons, Dirk.

We attempt to throw deep all the time…..did so pretty well for the first few weeks. Then something changed

  2. Darin Says:

Yeah Bobby. Theres a reason I took Djax in daily fantasy when Djax was playing. Fitz can throw the deep ball. Sees the field better. Winston throws late and not enough touch. Too bad it hasnt happened yet cuz the offense could drop over 30 against anyone if he ever gets it down.

  3. BucDan Says:

Bengals have weapons on offense. Our defense needs to keep Dalton feeling the heat in the pocket to force turnovers and keep the ball out of their playmakers’ hands.

Not necessarily worried about the Bengals defense, but they have linebackers that can roam and defensive backs that have been in the game awhile. Keep Winston clean and establish a balanced attack with the RBs with some RPO and screen looks. Set up the mid-to-deep level passing game off of this.

Let’s make it two in a row!

Sunday cannot come soon enough! Go Bucs!

  4. gbobucsfan Says:

The deep threat just hasn’t been there lately, hopefully this is the game that it changes…..If we can’t do it against the 31st defense in the league then we just need to stick to what’s working.

The clock struck midnight on FitzTragic get over it, if the guy was that good he wouldn’t be on his 9th team now……what is with some of you “fans”

  6. BucDan Says:

I agree with the above regarding touch.

Winston missed Jackson and OJ on under throws and also had an overthrow to DJax.

These are the plays that change the outcomes of games into our favor. We NEED to fully execute at all levels. These examples were all on QB placement, for sure.

  7. Bucsjoke Says:

    Ha ha BobbyM..nails it

  8. DB55 Says:

Been asking all week, does anyone want to discuss Djax stopped pass in the end zone? Bc they say Winston can’t hit djax but….

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

Always tough to win when your QB is good for 2 turnovers per game.

  10. BucfaninMi Says:

    Fitz time!

  11. 941bucsfan Says:

Whats changed is, you are not playing against some of the worse defenses in the league anymore. And teams have taken away the deep ball. Thats what happens when teams watch film. They will make us go 7-10 plays drives and hope for a mistake before they let you throw anymore bombs. NFL teams adjust people. Also if you dont put the ball right in between djax number 11, he has no plans on making the extra effort to make a catch. He doesnt believe in helping his QB out, he needs to go learn from Evans and Godwin

  12. WillieG Says:

Winston will miss DJax at least 3 times against Cincinnati.

  13. Joe Says:

    .

Nah. Doesn’t fit the “Jameis is a bum, cut him” narrative.

Funny, Jameis and DJax aren’t on the same page, people scream. But he has no problem with any other receiver or tight end including Freddie Martino and the ex-CFL backup Donteaa Dye. But yeah, let’s #BlameJameis.

  14. BucDan Says:

DJax doesn’t lay out. EVER. Maybe it’s in his contract.

  15. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Joe that argument really doesn’t hold water when your high priced FA wideout Djax is always open on deep passes and your alleged franchise QB cannot complete a deep pass to a wide open guy, it is baffling….watch the top elite qbs or even the younger ones like mahomes, goff, wentz, etc they drop it right in there like ol danny weurfel to reidel and jacquiz back in the day at UF, why cant winston do that?

  16. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Great advice.

Koetter, please put FitzMagic back in there and let’s start throwing deep again…

  17. D-Rome Says:

It’s remarkable Marvin Lewis is still with the Bengals. Talk about a patient organization! He was a serious candidate to be the head coach of the Bucs after Tony Dungy was fired.

  18. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Here, Joe, just for you…

When it comes to making the right decisions and throws in the heat of the moment, ‘Jameis is a bum, cut him.’ – Everyone with eyes

BS. Desean has been able to connect with EVERY quarterback he has played with. HE is the constant. Some accountability here would be fantastic. The absolutely ZERO chemistry between the 2 is unacceptable. Fitz is NOT a better quarterback than Winston, but it’s pretty interesting that those deep outs, and deep posts to Desean (like the firs tplay of the Eagles game) has not been replaced by shallow curls and screens to Adam Humphries – Winston’s personal safe place.

Just to be clear, we are talking about the same guy who gave the Bucs a lead in the fourth quarter last year (only to watch the gutless defense give up the lead)?

We are talking about the same guy who won a game against the Saints because of his decision not to settle for a field goal?

We are talking about the same guy who was leading his team on a game-winning drives the past two weeks when the coach played Lucy and pulled the ball away for a high school stunt and a field goal attempt from a struggling kicker?

Is this the same guy you are referring to who you say makes bad decisions? If so we are watching two different quarterbacks.

  21. Casey Morgan Says:

    Start Fitz.

  22. ben Says:

Winston will make a great 2nd string qb (maybe)

  23. DBS Says:

Yes. the same guy who got sacked twice back to back . The same guy that threw a pick while looking right at the DB. The same guy that fumbled the center exchange. Lucky to get it back. So he hit DJax 1 time in the End Zone and it got stripped. Receivers don’t get it stripped? But How often can he hit DJax wide open? And stop with the DJax slows down on his route. You can write all the articles you want . You can’t say to someone he does not make bad decisions. Then turn aroun and write articles about Good Jameis and Bad Jameis and the foolish things he does.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

yeah lets blame Winston and not the man that’s suppose to “develop” him…..lol….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  25. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The propaganda wing of jason licht must have had some sour milk this morning with the defense of jameis and the deep throw well said go for the face, regarding his qbs, from Nate Longshore, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Kirk Cousins and Fitz all were able to hook up with djax on the deep passes and do what he does best and only one QB is unable to do that? So is it djax or is it a qb issue?

  26. DB55 Says:

Desean has been able to connect with EVERY quarterback
    ————-
WRONG!!! Djax has a career 56% completion percentage which means on avg he only catches 1 or 2 passes thrown his way. And that’s for his entire career, look it up.

  27. D the Bucs fan Says:

You guys must not have seen the back ups last two games or his career. The same dumb mistakes Winston makes is the same mistakes the Harvard educated man makes. With way more experience. I wonder if some of you fans watch any other football. Joe just mentioned Andrew luck another number one overall pick. Picks/ per passes thrown. In both situations the coaching didn’t help their qb out. I would rather have a better oline and dline than all these weapons the coach can’t scheme to get open or run block for.

lol ok guy – while you’re looking up stats, go ahead and look up connects beyond 20 yards between Jameis and Jackson. Don’t give me some false equivalency of Jackson vs sayyyy a Julian Edleman or a Michael Thomas that catches 10 5 yard passes every game. Completion percentage will always be compromised on deep passes. Give me one. JUST ONE pass Jameis has thrown 40 yards in the air that has connected with Jackson. And I can give you atleast 5-10 that Michael Vick has thrown. Michael freaking Vick – the guy that can’t hit the broad side of a barn

  29. Bucsfan77 Says:

You talk about jameis interceptions show me ANY other QB that drops back 66, yes 66 times and doesn’t throw one in a single game. Hell show me any other QB that drops back 66 times period.

  30. DB55 Says:

    Ok guy

You said he connected with EVERY qb, that’s false! Move the goal post all you want however fact remains, 56% career completion percentage.

Djax shows zero effort to catch Winston’s passes and the ones that hit him in the breadbasket are dropped anyway.

  31. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Yes Jameis makes mistakes.
    Yes Jameis makes plays.

    Same with every other QB.

When it comes to the end of tight close games he’s typically always done what is needed to win though. If we go game by game throughout his entire career; we might find a couple games total where he could have won the game and didn’t; vs 8-10+ games the D or Special Teams Sh1t the bed after he did what was needed for a win.

ESPN has him 11th in their QBR rating for those that have hung on that stat. His interceptions right now are way up and his TD:INT off because of it; but historically every year he’s only had 4 multi interception games at the very most in a season. That means there’s a good chance he throws 1 or less interceptions in 8 of the next 10 games. Fingers crossed.

  32. orlbucfan Says:

Jackson sounds more like a prissy diva than anything else. JW throws to all these different receivers and they catch his passes even the long ones. If the Raider egomaniac HC will take the diva, trade him! No big loss.

  33. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jameis giving his chance to win is usually accompanied him also giving the
other team a chance to win one or more times earlier in the game.

  34. Bob in Valrico Says:

    edit his team

  35. gman Says:

Somehow being able to keep your job for 15 years producing totally mediocre results makes you one’s idol? Get some new idols, Dirk

  36. Dapostman Says:

The first two games of the year the OL played lights out. They have not even come close the last 4 games. If they play better you’ll see some connections simple as that.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk is the one who shut down the offense after week 2 when he demanded that Monken run the ball more, because you know, running the ball up the gut for no gain on first down against a team that knows it’s coming is how you win ball games. Basically since the opening play action pass against the Eagles the Bucs haven’t thrown deep all that much – and I think that’s 100% on Dirk shutting down Monken, who himself said last week he just runs the plays that Dirk wants ran.

  38. Bird Says:

Joes. I mean obsessed with Jameis joe.

Think you , Jameis and db55 need to get a room. A private room in the back where no one can see

Ps. Send me your address and I will send you some glasses.

  39. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

Joe, Jameis’ play in the entire 2nd half was pretty lousy and played worse and worse the later it got in the game.

    Hopefully, he improves dramatically.

  40. Crazed Bucs Fan Says:

Bombs away, Jameis! Keep throwing! You won’t get better on the bench!
