“He Didn’t Over-communicate”

October 24th, 2018

Credits Mark Duffner.

It seems the Bucs communicated on defense Sunday.

Joe’s not being a wiseacre here, there is a kernel of truth to that and the info comes straight from Dirk Koetter’s mouth.

In his weekly sitdown with Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8, Koetter talked a bit about the job new defensive coordinator Mark Duffner did Sunday in the win over Cleveland.

The Bucs defense pitched a shutout in the first half, an unthinkable accomplishment given what Bucs fans had been accustomed to with Duffner’s predecessor, Mike Smith.

One common issue Smith cited in defensive failures was “communication.” He said it so often that even he became aware he couldn’t mention that any longer with Bucs fans running in a mob to dive off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Koetter brought up communication in passing when explaining Duffner’s job performance against the Browns.

“‘Duff’ is a fiery guy,” Koetter said. “He gives passionate speeches. But during the game, Duff was very calm. He called it, he didn’t over-communicate. He called it and he let the players play.”

Joe thought the term “over-communicate” was very interesting given Smith’s common gripe about communication. Were Smith’s plays a little too wordy (sort of like the complaint about Chucky’s offensive plays) and therefore easy to get things screwed up on the field? Sure smells like that to Joe.

    Just win Baby!!!!

  2. Bob in Valrico Says:

Corner play was much improved with the return of Carton Davis. First game that Grimes played up to expectations. M J Stewart played better in a scheme that was simplified enough to let young players focus on their assignment.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Bob … Had the same feeling about the Secondary. By being more aggressive closer to the LOS their underneath coverage looked quite a bit better. Losing Kwon will no-doubt hurt, but Taylor has some MLB experience & will slide over. It’ll be interesting to see if newly-signed Kevin Minter adds anything of value to the LB corps (at 6′ & 246 lbs he played MLB for the Bengals back in 2017). I’m still hoping that Beckwith comes back strong (thought I heard something yesterday that the Bucs have activated him, but don’t see that anywhere today).

  4. TheDailyAutosy Says:

    Joe
So a DC (any coach, Lovey) who coaches to his players’ skills instead of trying to have them play his defense when that is not their best skillset gets better results.
Mike Smith – Are you reading this?

  5. Bob in Valrico Says:

Here’s something to ponder ,I read on Buc Nation. Carl Nassib has been playing
well enough that they thought he should replace Vinnie Curry opposite JPP.
Big Will has one more sack than Beau Allen. Is Licht signing rotational players instead of starters in free agency?

  6. LargoBuc Says:

Im actually pretty stoked to see what Beckwith can do at Mike. Too bad it has to wait a week.

  7. lambchop Says:

Sometimes the extra length of play call is just the coach’s ego. If not the length, at least the complication of it. On defense, most of the time you’re reacting to the play. Why not just keep it simple. Our Harvard guys are on offense.

  8. lambchop Says:

Well, I take that back. Carl Nassib is a Nittany Lion with a Biology degree and hopes to one day go to medical school. So, we got some smarts on defense. Maybe other defensive players as well.

  9. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    We’re moving on ththe Cincinnati

  10. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

  11. Bob in Valrico Says:

I have seen our D lineman go out in pass coverage before, but I can’t remember
a well executed pass defense like Nassib produced. One hell of a play!

  12. DJM Says:

    Joe,
Anymore info about JW calling his own play at the end of the game when he look a sack?

  13. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Duffner did a splendid job with the Defense
The Loss of Kwon really hurt us

  14. Joe Says:

Anymore info about JW calling his own play at the end of the game when he look a sack?

No, but it wouldn’t be a surprise. Jameis will be available tomorrow. Good question for him.

  15. DB55 Says:

Licht signing rotational players instead of starters

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

Its laughable to hear the sheep and local media laud the defense!!! The only difference that was on the field was that the Bucs played a very simplistic base that will get torched verses a competent QB, that was different that was on tape then previous games!!!!!! Once other teams take 10 seconds to review the tape look out sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other was that the Browns game plan was to just check it down!!!!!! its so funny that the local media can’t see it!!!!!!!! getting rid of Coach Smitty to fix the defense will work as well as getting rid of drug martin to “fix” the run game!!!!!!!!!!!!! If we are not talking about who the new GM will be next year, then we are just wasting time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. DB55 Says:

Snacks is traded for a 5th and we don’t snatch him up and reunite him with JPP!?!?!? Blasphemy! Leads you to wonder if the goal is truly to field the BEST 22. Bc who wants Snacks when you sign and overpay Beau Allen.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

said it before and i’ll say it again…..all of our CB’s except for grimes are comfortable playing at the LOS…..that’s their strength….finally duff put players in position to win unlike smitty who was “mr. coach my scheme”…..with the CB’s playing their style of football it creates smaller windows for the QB……

lets see what they do vs Dalton and green…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  19. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

How enjoyable it was just to see him down on the sideline interacting with his players………. exactly where a Defensive Coordinator should be.

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    LOL……HE’S ALIVE!!!!!!!!…LOL

@realist, your finally finish helping smitty pack his sh!t…lol…how many U-Hauls did it take?..2..3…lol….

wrong realist…..as joe mention, the browns were shut down in the first half….something that would’ve never happened under smitty…..and all those check downs would’ve went for touchdowns if smitty was still here…..players had tighter coverage and looked like they knew what to do and when to do it, instead of looked lost and confused like they were under smitty…..

face it, smitty is the worst coach in buc history….who else got fired mid season?…….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    DB55

    where’d he go?

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  22. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe any news on if the Bucs are sniffing out a trade for Peterson? Man imagine him across Grimes! Shutdown corners indeed! That would definitely allow time for our Defensive Line to get sacs.

  23. El_Buc941 Says:

@813bucboi your right about that, players where shown that they could be trusted to hold there own face to face man to man against receivers and it payed off huge. And to have 5sacs?!

  24. DB55 Says:

    Lions

  25. The Buc Realist Says:

LOL, the sheep think it was not the Browns that had avg 11.5 pts on offense in regulation time!!!!!!!!!!

All problems are fixed now, right sheep!!!!!! The mob is out and never like this coaching staff as it was not in relation to the old tampa 2 regime!!!!!! The “real” fans will not be happy to see all the bring “dungy” as president and brooks as gm comments that we will see as the year goes on!!!!!!\

Now that Joe has apparently let The Realist out of Moderation Hell, Its time for the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

all problem aint fixed but a huge one is…lol….and that’s smitty getting canned….

you want the truth…lol….you cant handle the truth!!!!!!…..the truth is dirk will be loading up a U-HAUL and following his buddy to the fishing pier at the end of the year if we don’t win 10games this year…..that’s some truth are your a$$!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

To say the Browns averaged 11.5 points on offense in regulation time is simply inaccurate. Certainly nothing an actual realist would claim.

The Browns have only 1 OT win in which they scored points that would effect their scoring average. They lost 2 and tied another.

They averaged 21 PPG on offense coming into the week and were held to 23.

The Bears averaged 21 PPG as well in the 3 games before facing us. The Smitty lead D gave up more than that by halftime in route to a 48 point blowout.

I wouldn’t go down this path Realist.

The thing is – the Duff lead D does not need to be even average. As long as they are not worst in NFL history they are doing better than what we were seeing under Smitty across almost every defensive category.

If you want to argue that we have the historically worst relative defensive talent NFL history then I’d love to hear that argument. Last I checked we have a DE on pace for 16 sacks; a DT that is supposed to a probowler, 2 LBS who have made probowls, a CB who has made probowls, multiple high round draft picks, etc.

If Realist wants to argue how the described list of players = worst relative defensive talent in the history of the NFL then that is the only way he will ever have ANY point in terms of defending MS. Good luck making that argument tho.

  28. Lord Cornelius Says:

You know someone is grasping for straws when they make arguments like “All problems are fixed now, right sheep!?”

Literally not one person here is saying anything like that. You are arguing with yourself at this point.

Really, Joes? What have I missed? 🙂

  30. The Buc Realist Says:

    @lord of corn

What we saw of the browns was the offense in the last 2 games that mayfield has started with tape on him, and the avg 11.5 in those 8 quarters!!!!! The Bucs defense will be filleted in the next up coming games!!!!!!!!! The depressing part is in the coaching search next year, there will be parameters placed on the coaches that will limit what the Bucs will get!!!!!! Finding the coach that will “fix jamies” and a defensive coach that will have to work with gmc and have to work with the old tampa 2 players will restrict the defense!!!!! The top people, top priority is to retire gmc as a buc and jam him into the stupid ring of honor!!!!!!!!!

    Enjoy your corn chowder sheep!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. 813bucboi Says:

LC just told you to pull your skirt down and let go of smittys nuts chump!!!!!!….lol….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Lord C

Exactly!!! For me at least hyperbole is the worst part of both sports and politics. Too many folks just exaggerate…unless of course you’re famous and powerful enough to simply get away with straight up lying why waste time simply exaggerating.

  33. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Realist.

Ok. A 2 game sample size lol. Awesome.

If the D gets shredded going forward it isn’t a step backwards vs what was happening with Smitty.

Let me break this down as simple as possible:

Under Smitty – the Bucs have been the worst defense in the NFL since 2017. Outside of a 5 game stretch in 2016 they have been horrifically bad. Last or next to last in 2017 in points / yards given up per drive.

This year; in MS’s THIRD year; we were on pace for worst defense in the history of the NFL.

Do you truly believe we have the worst relative talent in league history this year? Because I can go down our roster and point out players who all have objectively proven success and are by far not the worst players at their position.

That’s the bottom line dude. You are taking a stand for historically bad defense. You are saying we needed to keep rolling with the DC who in his 3rd year was producing a defense giving up the worst stats in the entire league.

Re read this a few times and let that sink in. No one is saying the D is going to be awesome now. Stop inventing fake arguments to go up against.

This tampa 2 sheep mafia sh1t you refer to is all in your head man lol. I don’t give a f*ck what scheme or what players we use to achieve success as long as it works.

  34. Firrrreee Licht Says:

ESPN just released rookie ratings… guess who is on Top!!! Derwin James Jr.!!! Nice pick Licht. Great job of passing on the best rookie in the class to draft a Pac12 player who is slow and hasn’t done anything. Communicate that to Jason Licht.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Were able to communicate because they weren’t set up like pro diamond bases loaded Smitty defense
