An All-In Firing

October 15th, 2018

Team Glazer members Bryan and Ed alongside the Vince Lombardi trophy.

Remember when Dirk Koetter said he appreciated”a lot of courage” shown by Team Glazer when they brought him and his staff back for a third season as head coach?

It was a hell of a line by the head coach as the 2017 season ended.

Anybody think Team Glazer has any interest in being patient or courageous with the 2018 Buccaneers regime? Not a chance.

Today’s firing of Mike Smith is one hell of an all-in move by Koetter and you can bet it was embraced by ownership.

Team Glazer paid Smith an absolute fortune of cash to stick with the team as defensive coordinator after the 2016 season. He was rumored to be receiving head coach money. And his new contract, prompted by fear of losing him to a head coaching gig, was hailed by Derrick Brooks and many others as the key power play of the 2017 Tampa Bay offseason.

A year and a half later, Smith is on the street after five games — on the heels of a horrible 2017 season.

Today, Koetter cited post-bye failures in Atlanta as a key piece of the Smith firing, but it had to be brewing for weeks. And Joe is very pleased.

This team is too talented to have a losing season. The offense is too explosive to be saddled by the worst defense in the history of football, which sadly is not hyperbole.

Team Glazer and Koetter should be looking at all kinds of bold moves to squeeze the most out of this season. And that includes trades at the upcoming deadline and bringing in help for interim coordinator Mark Duffner immediately, fresh eyes on this defense. “Jobs on the line” isn’t just a cliche anymore at One Buc Palace; today’s firing made it a living, breathing mantra.

The win-now pressure is a great thing to have out in the open, Joe believes. Bucs officials need the team to understand they’re in full crisis mode now in order to see the response and best evaluate for the future.

Another interesting note is that the upcoming draft class isn’t that strong. So giving up draft picks may not be as valuable as they’re previously.

Production business HUH KLUELESSKOETTER?? so what does your head coaching record of 16-21 say about your production????? BLACK MONDAY is going to be so sweet!!!!1

  3. Eric Says:

embraced by ownership? Insisted on I would think.

No chance Koetter did this on his own.

  4. Robert Says:

    jameis or d jax

they’re useless together, so one needs to go

  5. BringBucsBack Says:

I wonder, had our Buccaneers pulled out a win yesterday do they have the guts to make this move now?

We will never know. In any event this was long, long overdue!

  6. Wausa Says:

    Amen Joe.

We have way too many people blaming this on other things rather than the obvious:

THE BUCS ARE ON PACE TO BE THE WORST DEFENSE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL.

Let’s hope Duffner can fix the back end of the defense:
Things like not knowing who to cover
    or
bracketing coverage on a backup receiver, while leaving an ALL Pro with single coverage and no safety help.

I’m also hopeful, the Bucs throw out the soft coverage and ramp things up with a much more aggressive defensive scheme.

Koetter and Licht were probably nudged by the Glazers after the Bears debacle.

“This team is too talented to have a losing season. The offense is too explosive to be saddled by the worst defense in the history of football, which sadly is not hyperbole.”

    Exactly!

I have always believed that defense wins ball games. I have had to. In all my years as a Bucs fan we have NEVER had an offense that could potentially score on most possessions. It’s always been the defense that carried the team. now, even with America’s ADHD quarterback at the helm we have a chance to win many games… if the defense even plays average. Of course I am old school and still want a defense that dominates.

    Go Bucs!

  10. Robert Says:

playing with a lead the 1st 2 games made all the difference. The D was much more aggressive and got turnovers. Let’s hope they can get a lead next week………but I’m not optimistic.

I see another loss followed by JW being traded. Fitz comes back and we make the playoffs. maybe we get a cheeseburger or 1/2 lb of crab legs for JW as a bonus.

  11. WalkdaPlank Says:

This was a Team Glazer move 100%. If Koetter has his way Mike Smith would have sank the ship and Koetter would gladly go down with it. Now let’s just hope the damage hasn’t already been done and he still sinks..

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

It’s time to win now or else. And it shouldn’t just be coaches. If the team continues to play like their past two games then blow it all up including shipping out a significant number of players.

    Enough is enough!!!

  14. Tabascco Says:

Go out and get Peterson and Bell !!!!!!!!!! If Kotter cant win he will be next one on a vacation

    Someone from college or elsewhere

  16. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Lot of relief here for a lot of different people. Instead of “Buccaneers parting ways with GM Jason Licht, HC Dirk Koetter, DC Mike Smith and his staff”, it’s just Mike Smith on the streets. The Ship dropped the load that was going to sink the whole crew, and maybe we dropped it just in time to make repairs, and sail on.

if duf doesn’t think he knows what to do on some level since he hasn’t delved into a playbook in 20 years, get him a young hot assistant behind the scenes…the game is changing very quickly nowadays…and if it has gotten away from smitty, it has most likely gotten away from dufner on some level too…get him a young hotshot assistant…

get a defense and get pressure off jameis…jameis must feel so much pressure to score in groves…

So after one full game this season, Djax and JW can’t connect, I can guarantee that these two are working to correct whatever you think is the problem, it will only take one connection, I do not think their connection in preseason was a fluke

  20. SKBucsfan Says:

    Kobe;

There is still a chance Cleveland will take them. I think they still deserve the title as the worst franchise in the league.

  21. Dapostman Says:

  22. LakeLand Says:

Well the players will still get to enjoy their annual early vacation in January

It don’t matter who is the DC

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk strikes me as the type of guy that won’t really be all that disappointed when he’s fired, and in fact will enjoy taking a two year vacation on the Glazers dime.

  24. LakeLand Says:

    SKBucfan

Cleveland leads the league in takeaways with 16
They are tied with Seattle for the lead in turnovers differential

The Bucs are 30th in turnover differential

There’s more stench to the Bucs than their defense

  25. adam from ny Says:

Duff need to get his linebackers right first

  27. BucFamous Says:

Man, a lot of Keotter haters are gonna be disappointed when he isn’t fired at the end of this season.

Koetter presides over the #4 passing offense in the league, and if he can get the running game going then the total offense will crack the top 10 (it’s currently 11).

If you think the Glazers are going to turn their back on that, you’re nuts. They’ll try to bring in a DC that can actually scheme against contemporary NFL offenses, unlike Smith who hadn’t’ changed his schemes since he was in Jax.

My guess is many folks are gonna be disappointed when Koetter and Licht are still here next year.

THEY STILL GAVE UP 40 POINTS.

    Lake

Rookie Donte Jackson (Carolina the guy we passed on for MJ Stewart) has 3x as many interceptions as the entire Bucs secondary. Think about that. Truth is the Bucs are incapable of causing turnovers so how do we win the battle? Does the offense have to play mistake free ball every game? Cuz if I’m not mistaken Fitz threw 3 ints in 1 qrt of football but some fans have completely blacked that out. Smh

    Capt Kidd Says:

Duffner’s first foray into the NFL came with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he spent six seasons as linebackers coach (1997-2000) and defensive coordinator (2001-02). In his first year as coordinator in 2001, the Bengals defense allowed the unit’s fewest points (309) since 1989 and fewest yards per game (302) since 1983. In addition, the defense set a franchise single-season record for sacks that year with 48, a mark that stood for 11 seasons.

This looks very promising….looking forward to a new chapter in this defense.

  32. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs will be the Bucs

It don’t matter who is fired

They will stink as usual……foul odor in the air

  33. JimmyJack Says:

BucFamous just so you know Dirk’s offense has a knack for coming out I’ll prepared and get off to slow starts which has cost us a fair share of games. We have had two games like that already this year(both losses).

Point being that even if the defense starts to play well Dirk’s offense is far from being inflappable

  34. LakeLand Says:

    DB55

They chose to ignore the turnovers by Fitz

    Instead, they kept hollering FitzMagic

    lol

  35. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Bravo to The Bucs best team decision! Idk if I should Thank Dirk because it very well could have been the Glazers who told Dirk Smith has to go, same goes for the play calling duties very well could have been the Glazers behind that decision. Or maybe this was all on Dirk either way good decisions have been being made. I trust Licht he has earned it. We need to stomp the Browns come Sunday !!! Fire the cannons Jameis and Co.

  36. westernbuc Says:

I’d like to see a summary of all the praise that paying Smith to stay got at the time. Pretty sure it was widely praised by the same outlets that wanted Gruden back….

  37. D-Rome Says:

Where are all the “Totally Confident” people who claimed the Bucs would win 10 or 11 games, and that the emergence of Noah Spence would be a significant factor?

  38. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “This team is too talented to have a losing season. The offense is too explosive to be saddled by the worst defense in the history of football.” Too TALENTED to have a losing season Joe? Have you met our OLine yet? Or maybe our rookie Secondary? We’ve lost 3 in a row because of what or who exactly? IF I remember right, this TEAM peed all over itself in the FIRST HALF of the Steelers game … and lost. Then our defense AND offense proceeded to pee all over themselves in the ENTIRE Bears game … and lost. Then followed that up by peeing all over themselves in the FIRST HALF of the Falcons game … and lost. Hmmm, no trends there.

Our defense played crappy in all but one half of those 3 games, BUT … our offense certainly contributed to the slow starts in all 3 games. BIG TIME. And the turnovers? Seems to me like those came from the, oh ya, offense. So the solution to these woes is to promote the position coach whose LBs have been underperforming all season, and we’re now shoo-ins to have a winning season. Got it.

  39. TampaBayAllDay Says:

    Bye Bye Mike Smith

  40. Sarasota Garey Says:

So Joe what can you tell us about our new defensive coordinator?

  41. LakeLand Says:

    JimmyJack

They were down in their last 3 games………..all losses

    Chicago 38-3

    Pittsburgh 23-7

    Atlanta 21-6

But it’s not important…….no one talks about it

  42. Bucamania Says:

  43. Sarasota Garey Says:

The new DC is the coach of the WORST linebackers in the NFL

They can’t cover a 2 dollar bet at the horse track

Probably lead the league in missed tackles

Teams has thrown 198 passes on the Bucs

The Linebackers has 2 PD COMBINED

    This is your new DC

    Lol

  46. LakeLand Says:

He should have been booted along with Mike Smith

But he get a promotion instead

  47. Bob in Valrico Says:

While I think Smitty’s defense is too cute trying to disguise this defense, the main thing he succeeded in doing is confusing his young players. We still have the same players and they are not ready . This is a Jason Licht problem. His attempts to fix the defense were too little too late. Hope different assignments and better communication can fix things.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

BucFamous – Hey if Dirk isn’t fired then fantastic, it means the Bucs have made the playoffs and firing Mike Smith worked out well. I don’t like Dirk, I think he’s an awful head coach who brings nothing to the table, and I think Monken can run this offense better than Dirk can, but if I’m wrong it means the team is having success, then great, you and Dirk can call me an idiot for not believing in him. Meanwhile I’ll be fine with that because the team is a playoff team.

  49. Mike Johnson Says:

Hellava Spin you creating here Joe. Koetter did not Fire Smitty. The Glazers and Licht did. Koetter was ready to continue with Smitty until the ship went down come seasons end. Koetter himself still could go down if he does not break even stevens. But Koetter did not Fire Smitty. Thats BS!!!

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Say what you will about Duffners credentials but if he could just get the team to gain an ability to get off the field on third and long, or third and very long, it alone will make a vast difference.

  51. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Yea Joe, Jameis only put up 4 TD passes and 400 yards, so it is big time his fault according to Defense. Man these Jameis haters are blinded by their hatred. They probably would love to have Mahomes, only problem is his amazing game last night had almost identical stat line as Jameis. In their defense though, he is not Jameis.

  52. Christopher Schiefen Says:

DB…the upcoming draft class is LOADED with DLine talent tho. Imagine Derwin and…oh, nevermind…

  53. Rod Munch Says:

This is interesting, I was looking up that “Teams that start 2-0 make the playoffs” X percentage of times and I found two articles, one that says the number is 57.1%, but I found an older ESPN article from 2001 where the numbers were 68.7%.

Anywho does anyone have the stats on the percentage of teams that make the playoffs after starting 2-3?

  54. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Lakeland, you are using too much common sense on these people, they will realize it when the bucs finish 6-10 with the worst defense in the NFL. the LBs are terrible, the D front is terrible, the secondary stevie wonder knows they are terrible its all coaching and this change will not fix anything, jason licht is THE worst GM in all of the NFL get rid of him and solve the problem, the bucs need a real legit NFL president or GM, like rich mckay who had the best eye for talent in the league, see if he wants to get the band back together, rich as president and dungy as gm or even HC at this point, its a different league but the bucs need experience and attitude and change the uniforms….Defense Rules said saban makes more than the bucs can pay which is correct but a guy like saban with his ego I think would jump at the chance to be in tampa and be the HC/GM and he would right this ship in 2 years, saban would come in for less just for the chance to prove he can do it, he has an eye for talent and coach’s all the time, and jameis would play for saban, If no on dungy for front office then glazers need to go all in on Saban, the nictator would right this sinking ship……..FIRE LICHT he is the real problem

  55. LakeLand Says:

    Dusthty Rhothdes

Mike Smith should have been fired last year
Jason Licht, Dirk Koetter had a year to find a decent DC

Now they fire him after the BYE week
When the team is 2-3 and have lost 3 straight

    There’s a word for this

    DYSFUNCTIONAL

  56. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Dushty, nobody gives you any credit when your post is one giant run on sentence. Here is a tip, periods are your friend. I went on tilt just watching you put random commas in your rant above and not one GD period.

  57. eleven lawn chairs Says:

Its been said 11 lawn chairs could make better stops than this buc’s defense currently. I tend to agree. Perhaps now, our goal line defense will consist of more than 3 down lineman spread out 15 yards taking on 8 blockers, and 8 guys deep in the end zone picking their noses. And a defense that blitzes with man to man coverage that jumps routes know the opposing qb will be under duress. I would rather go down fighting like men, then going prevent all the time.

  58. D the Bucs fan Says:

The bucs have $88 Million committed to the defense this year according to bspn

  59. LakeLand Says:

The ENTIRE defensive staff should have been fired last year

  60. unbelievable Says:

    AGREED.

  62. Rod Munch Says:

Lakeland-Dusty – Have you two ever heard of this guy called Brett Favre? You see ladies when Winston was coming out of school those that know football and watched him play said he’s a gunslinger, like Favre. Now I know you once read a bumper sticker that talks about turnovers and that become the basis of everything you think you know about football, but if you remember back to the Favre days we’d play him every year, in fact twice a year for a while, and he’d turn the ball over like 5 times and yet still somehow have the ball with a chance to win with 1:23 left in the game. The difference was the Packers defense wasn’t giving up 34 points a game. You see dopes, you win football by scoring more points than the other guys, not by winning the TO battle, and when your defense is giving up 34 points, you’re not winning many games unless you have the best QB play in recorded history.

  63. LakeLand Says:

Now they fire Mike Smith after the team has lost 3 straight games

Then promote the LB coach to DC

    Too funny

  64. LakeLand Says:

    Rod Munch

    Did I mention Winston?

I said the Bucs as a team

I don’t single out INDIVIDUAL players

    It’s a TEAM sport

  65. LakeLand Says:

    The team STINKS

    Not ONE player

  66. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

My opinion and faith in Koetter has raised about 25%. Win a few games and he be back up near 700%.

  67. PolkFan Says:

Lakeland it hurts to be from the same county as you smh

  68. Seminole Bill Says:

The team had a game plan for the Falcons, both offense and defense, and that plan had, at the least, been endorsed by Koetter. The question now is this; will firing Mike Smith make any difference or will Koetter still coach to a “take no risk” game plan?

  69. JimmyJack Says:

Good point Seminole Bill. It will surely go over the heads of the many who seem to wanna think Dirk is only the HC for offense.

  70. Dan Says:

This is and has always been a 5 win team. Once they brought the coach GM and qb back they guaranteed this. The definition of insanity is all these fans who support Winston and Dirk in spite of the garbage they see week in and week out. If you love loosing Licht Winston and Dirk should be your guys. Go back and watch some post 2008 games. Sorry to say it looks about the same guys.

  71. JimmyJack Says:

Dan why didn’t you come here and tell us after game2?

  72. bucanation Says:

Head coach will be gone soon not sure about the general manager

  73. LakeLand Says:

You can’t compare Brett Favre Green Bay Packers to the Yucs

    The Packers actually created turnovers

  74. LakeLand Says:

    Well Polk County stinks also

That’s why I moved years ago

As soon as I was out of High School

I caught the first thing smoking

  75. SKBucsfan Says:

Lakeland I agree the whole defensive staff should have been sent packing last year. But that didn’t happen. What do you propose mid-season? Do nothing and continue to suck on defense? Or maybe make a change and attempt to right the ship. Duffner is probably not the guy, but we have no where to go but up. Unless of course we lose 10 starters on defense to injury. That would suck. lol

  76. Rod Munch Says:

LakeLand – Yeah, cool story, you have no issue with Winston because you’re fair and balanced and your comments aren’t about Winston at all, it’s about the team yo! LOL! Come on, own it, you hate Winston, he triggers you sending you into uncontrollable rants where you just repeat yourself. OK the team has 9 turnovers in 3 games – well in 2 of those games they had the ball with a chance to win, and in one Dirk punted the ball away and in the other Dirk calls a trick play. The offense isn’t a problem. If you want to say Dirk is a terrible head coach, then we can agree, if you want to say Mike Smith is a terrible DC, then we agree, if you want to win the loss on Jameis when he’s literally the reason the Bucs had any chance to win, then that’s nonsense.

  77. JimmyJack Says:

Bucanation…….My guess is Licht is definitely staying. If he was on the hotseat why in the world would the Glazers let him sign any players to long-term deals like with Marpet?

It seems like an ass backwards thing to do if your going to bring in a new GM who will be stuck with deals that just recently got inked. I can’t believe the Glazers are that very stupid.

  78. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Rod Much, you are out of your skull comparing winston to favre…huge difference between the 2, and its called winning

  87. Patrick in SC (formerly VA) Says:

I love the message that this move sends to the team and to the community. The bleeding had to stop and they finally made a move to salvage a season that is still redeemable.

  88. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Jimmy Jack, in my opinion, this guy since day 1 of his GMship has been all over the board building this team with no consistent theme. For example how did Rich Mckay build the bucs? He built a defense, of course it was an all time great one but still, and then he got a solid offensive line and a first round QB (who sucked) and RBs and solid WRs. Licht again has no rhyme or reason in building this team or an identity, he has a strong affection with TEs and LBs it seems. I hope Vea is great but that was not the picks the bucs should have made, esp when in 2019 the draft is loaded with DL, and I think koetter and him are not in agreement anymore. Also he drafted a kicker in round 2, sooo, you may be right though he may be around in 2019

  89. webster Says:

    Dusty

You are out of your mind if you dont understand what rod was saying. You cant because you are one of those clueless fans who attributes wins and loses to one player. Here is the fact genius, farve was throwing 2O+ ints with a number 1, number 2, number 1, number 3 ranked defense who also generated turnovers. That is totally different than having the worst defense in nfl HISTORY!!! It takes a team to win. Let me know when that point sinks in to the uneducated buc fans.

  90. SKBucsfan Says:

I hope Licht is the next one to go. Drafting a kicker in round 2 should be an automatic dismissal. I may have canned him before Round 3 started.

  91. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Cheeeeers TouchDownTampaBay ~~~~~ this beer is for YOU.

  92. webster Says:

    Dusty

What the he11 are you talking about? Mckay built a strong defense or as you put it all time great defense and THEN he drafted a 1st round qb? You do know dilfer was drafted before sapp, brooks, abraham, barber, booger, kelly, dexter jackson, etc. See this is why buc fans are laughed at. Some do not even know their own history but will jump on jbf to spew alternative facts.

  93. Jim Says:

Hope comes with every new day…

webster, i meant he drafted a 1st round qb before all of that and to be correct it was sam wyche having his hand in drafting dilfer, brooks, sapp, chidi, rhett and some others who contributed to the bucs changing from the yucs, personally i was a fan of craig ericson and courtney hawkins, lamar thomas and horace copeland offense back then and they played some exciting football at the ol sombrero

  95. Joel Says:

Our defense will already be improved next week without McCoy in the lineup.

  96. Buc4evr Says:

Firing Smitty is a start, but it won’t help much with our lousy secondary and bad linebackers.

  97. Ozzie the Sports Junkie Says:

We can’t get our first round picks on the field anyhow ..send it to Pitts for L.Bell..and whole ya got the rolladex out call Zona and pick up Peterson..we cabt draft anyhow get something ..show the fans something ..ya know who adds impact players mid season ??? Losers like Patroits ..ya know how Hatd it is to polish 5 Lombardis ?? It’s A pain in the ass ..I hear …things will be just fine …Um sure Vida Blew will be the next Troy Palanula and Rojo the next Curtis Martin…Brady sux anyway ..all he does is win Super Bowls 🙄 We got no time for dat !!

  98. Defense Rules Says:

@Rod … “The offense isn’t a problem.” Uhhh, might want to rethink that one Rod. When you lose 34-29, guess what … the TEAM loses. Give up one fewer TD & the TEAM wins. Score one more TD & the TEAM wins. Good old-fashioned COMPLEMENTARY FOOTBALL, where one side of the football causes a MOMENTUM SHIFT that picks up the other side of the TEAM in addition to itself. Or vice-versa.

Yardage doesn’t mean diddly when it comes to winning & losing Rod, but POINTS SCORED and POINTED ALLOWED sure do. Driving the entire length of the field may look real pretty on the stat sheet, but if that drive ends up in ZERO points scored because of an INT in the end zone, guess what … that just became the difference in points in your 34-29 loss.

Scoring points in football is kinda like when someone asked J. Paul Getty many years ago how much money would be enough. His answer? “Just a little bit more.”

When winston threw that pic into triple coverage from the 5 when hump was all alone on the 1 I knew this game was a lesson in futility

  100. BigMacAttack Says:

This defense is far from full of talent. It’s full of underachievers. Kwon has not played well. Lavonte is hot and cold. GMC needs to go, hurt again, probably going on IR so he can bank another 10 mil doing nothing. The secondary is complete joke and maybe a lot is coaching but they look like a bunch of busts at this point. Curry is okay. Beau is okay. JPP is very good but he can’t save them. Everyone is high on Buckner but I don’t see results. I’m not sold on him. The Bucs have great receivers and tight ends. Barber gets better and better each game. Jameis is okay but still can’t see open guys and forces passes. It isn’t getting better. This team should be talented but for the most part, suck. From 2-0 in route to 2-14.

    About time!

  102. webster Says:

    @ dusty

Now that i can agree with. I love erickson and i thought drafting dilfer was a mistake. Its a shame how dilfer ruined horace copeland aka Hi-C’s career with that horrible pass in preseason. I missed his back flips after scoring. Dont forget that offense also had a pretty good tightend we picked up from the packers i believe but his name excapes me. If the current bucs had the sgt rock/floyd peters #13 rank defense, we would be playoff bound. Hardy, satana dotson, lonnie marts, ricky reynolds, brodrick thomas etc.

  103. bucanation Says:

This coaching staff is not NFL caliber meaning the Head coach his barney fife sheepish press conferences say it all he just not a motivator , and cannot make timely game time adjustments worst ive seen and he knows the end is near . so sorry joe you can spit him out of your mouth now gam e over .

  104. bucanation Says:

I told all my friends that this is what the bucs are with no exsprinces NFL caliber coach and the season never had a chance , look at the Gators same team and a real coach that knows how to deal the cards .

  105. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If out DBs continue to suck, then we need to next let go Jon Hoke (DB coach).

I am game for a full house cleaning of the defensive coaching staff at years end if they cannot string a few good defensive effort and wins. I am not expecting a miracle but would like to see our DBs play closer to the line. And hopefully Mark Duffner is wise enough NOT to continue with the same old Mike Smith predictable scheme.

  106. webster Says:

    @ defense

Please dont be that idiot fan. Ofcourse the name of the game is to score more points than the other team but that too is a team effort. You cant be a championship team if your philosophy is just to outscore everybody. You have to be able to stop somebody as well. You should be able to score 29 or 3O and win most games. The bucs are the only team outside of kansas city and one more this week that scored 29+ pts and lost. To expect a team to score 35+ every week is idiotic unless you are playing the bucs defense. What about that you dont understand? Yards mean alot. It means we can make mistakes and still put up 4 tds and over 5OO yards. Some teams like the redskins made no turnovers and could only put up maybe 3OO yards. Stop being clueless.

    @ pancake

It was not triple coverage but i know you are team truth isnt truth. Godwin was one on one but because the ball shot up 15 feet in the air, it allowed 3 other players to make a b-line to the ball. Stop with the alternative facts. You are so transparent boss hog.

  107. bucanation Says:

Alabama yet again this is Dirts fault seen it tasted it and did nothing but watch it over and over and over an doesn’t have any guts .and my guess is he was made to fire him and I hope it doesn’t take too long for his turn .

    _________________________________

Well, that never happened, because it wasn’t triple coverage.

But he did mess up, Hump was open in the flat. Should’ve made that read. But where he threw it was not triple coverage, or quadruple coverage, as I keep hearing people claim.

  109. JabooBuc Says:

Bucsnation: Gators are a far different team than last year. Even if it’s the exact same team (and it’s not) a year of experience can make all the difference.

  110. LakeLand Says:

Joke Hoke was Lovie DB coach in Chicago, when Chicago fired Lovie

Then Marc Trestman kept him on and he got fired

The next thing I knew…the Bucs had hired him after firing Gil Byrd

    ***John Hoke***

  112. Jean Lafitte Says:

This is good news and hopefully the defense will play better. Also now we should be able to evaluate JW3 without using the defense as an excuse for losing.

  113. Frank Pillow Says:

This was a decision that came down from upon high- or an ultimatum. Either way, we can’t be any worse for it.

  114. webster Says:

    @ jean

Stop being an idiot. Just because there is a new defensive coordinator doesnt mean the defense will be better. The bucs made the change because under smith it was the worst. It can still be really bad. The offense is good enough to win a lot of games if the defense was just competent. There is no garauntee the defense will be competent with duffner at the helm. The bucs are just trying something new. What we do know is the offense is high powered.

  115. Anonymous Says:

Firing Smith was the only move, and logic would indicate it wasn’t Dork doing the firing…

We may lose the rest of the games because if the LB play is any indication, Duffner ain’t all that. The silver lining to that would be that the house gets fully cleaned. We all know Dork is just a coordinator, not close to a head coach. If the Glazers are paying any attention they’ll send Licht on his way too…too many busts, no depth, no foresight. This organization has been a kangaroo court under his guidance.

Smith had to go, no matter What happens next.

Yeah dungy President of operations why so he can run the ball and punt every drive and leave it on a tampa 2 defense that doesn’t work anymore.

Do you guys not recall he wasn’t even allowed in film room for colts offense.

Brooks as player personal or GM. HOW MANY champions did the storm win and that’s just above flag football. Brooks specialty is in other areas

Cause your a great player doesn’t make you a great football mind.

Than Alstott for public relations uh , huh , uh uh huh yeah yeah

  119. The Buc Realist Says:

Glazers are all in???? yes they are all in, the question needs to be for what!!!!!!!!! Word on the street from someone in the know of why they went full on 4-3 and built a D-line around GMC and not the 3-4 flex that Coach Smitty was working towards for the last two years, was because Some higher ups want to jam GMC into the ring of honor!!!!! When asked even if that means not having a good defense now??? and the answer was that it was the most important thing!!!!!!! So the D-tackle that was drafted for rah’s tampa two that has only been patched up since then almost 10 years ago!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  121. DNI Says Says:

Ordinary, commonplace, insignificant, unimportant, undistinguished, forgettable, and unimpressive are just a few words to describe this team. No wonder you barely hear anything about the Bucs on ESPN, Sports Center, etc. because they are blah, not news worthy. Heck, the only bright bit of positive news on this team was Fitzpatrick and his ability to defy the odds. The Glazers have failed miserably at putting together a product and then selling a bill of goods to the Tampa Bay fans. Hell, the only reason they sell out the stadium is because people go to see the other teams play. Firing Smith was a step in the right direction, too bad it wasn’t done earlier. However, the Glazers have a big road ahead of them in order to make this team the slightest bit relevant.

@Rod Munch and any other self-appointed Football Savants,

You are a bigger eeeeeediot than I thought when you think TOs don’t lose games and only the defense does. If you have a game where your defense only gives up 14 points, but your offense is stuck at 7 thanks to some TOs….you can’t win with that wonderful defense of yours. TOs mean you don’t score offensively and you either give up field position or points to the other team. Our opponents are not driving down 99 yards every time they score. If you can’t outscore your opponent, what do you expect the defense to do? Score all the points and hold the opponent to 0 for an entire game? It takes ALL 3 phases of the game to win including winning the TO battle. There are times when you lose the TO battle but win, it’s not the rule, it’s the exception. If TOs didn’t matter, we wouldn’t have kickers. Coaches aren’t dumb to harp on TOs. Don’t take a sack and get out of FG range, don’t throw a pick in the redzone, don’t fumble the ball. IT MATTERS. Field position is important. This offense can score if they don’t TO the ball. That’s the point. The only time the TO battle doesn’t matter is when you have an inept offense anyway.

Proof-read the retarded crap you people type. Favre lost more games than he won thanks to his TOs. If your defense is stout and holding the opponent in check, it’s definitely not so the QB can be a selfish prick and give the ball away and put that defense back on the field.

Why did Trent Dilfer win a SB? Because he played within himself and didn’t turn the ball over. He let the defense do its job and Shannon Sharpe put that offense on his back. No matter what, in the NFL, the offense has to score points.

  125. lambchop Says:

Let me rephrase, Favre lost more important games than he won.
