Pure Proof Of DeSean Jackson’s Elite Speed

September 21st, 2018

The numbers don’t lie

There’s saying a guy is super fast, and there’s proof from the NFL NextGen data that uses technology to track how fast players run, among many other metrics.

With two full weeks of data in the books, have any Bucs players clocked among the top-20 fastest players in the NFL while carrying the football?

Absolutely! The man’s name is DeSean Jackson.

In fact, of the top-20 speeds clocked with the ball, Jackson owns three of the times. His fastest was 20.5 miles per hour, and that was on the opening touchdown against the Eagles on Sunday. That ranked 14th-best in the league this year. Also, the recorded speed on that play was the third-highest among NFC wide receivers this season. JoJo Natson of the Rams is tops in the NFC but on a punt return.

No surprise, Tyreek Hill of the Chiefs owns the top two speeds in the NFL this year, maxing out at 21.95 mph, time that would have been second best through all of last season.

Jackson talked to Joe 1-on-1 about his elite speed and the ability to change gears through a play just before the season kicked off. You can find that here.

  4. NJBucsFan Says:

Great! An article where Winston wasn’t forced into the story that he is currently no part of.

  5. Slugglife Says:

Patrick, that’s what happens when fans are so used to losing. They want to run good players out of town to maintain the losing feeling.

I have posted on multiple occasions that Jameis is a better “pitcher” than a “quarterback”. What I mean by that is that Jameis is great throwing “fastballs” to a spot, so that curls and comebacks are great routes for him, however he seems relatively poor at throwing to a moving target, especially one moving directly away from him, such as fly or go routes, or a wheel route by an RB. To me, the ability to hit a stationary target is best for a pitcher, however to hit a moving target is best served by a quarterback. Again these are relative differences, because even a blind squirrel finds a nut, so please don’t tell me about the pass to Godwin last year. I believe that Fitz is much better at hitting MOVING targets than Jameis.

    For example:
    ME13 2017: 136 targets 71 receptions for 52.2% catch percentage and 5 TDs.
    2018: 19 targets 17 receptions for 89.5% catch percentage and 2 TDs.
1001 yards in 2017, but already 230 yards in 2018, with improved YAC.
DJax 2017: 90 targets 50 receptions for 55.6% catch percentage and 3 TDs.
    2018: 9 targets 9 receptions for 100% catch percentage and 2 TDs.
668 yards in 2017, but already 275 yards in 2018, with improved YAC.
BTW, 2 of his 3 TDs in 2017 were………………… Fitz to DJax. Go figure?

Exit questions: If the difference this year is mostly due to the offensive line play, and not to the QB play, why have the RBs only gained 76 and then 43 yards in the two games thus far? If Fitzpatrick has had all day to throw, why did he rush 12 times in the first game, knowing that his backup in that game has never taken a regular season snap?

Joe, all exceptional articles this morning … awesome. Finding out ‘stuff’ like Tyreek Hill being clocked at 21.95 MPH blows my mind. That’s like gazelle-speed. Easy to see how receivers like DJax & Hill can take the top off of defenses, especially if they have a QB throwing the rock who can hit them open & in-stride.

  8. GMen Says:

I think he likes Fitz because this QB will actually look at Jackson instead of staring down Evans.

  9. Whatever Says:

Everyone is so surprised about DJax speed. There are YouTube channels for the past 3 years that shows this. It’s not Joe that does it. Someone else does and this website shows it and acts like it really report something different. As I have always said…Tampa fans are the dumbest fans in the NFL.

@Whatever … “Tampa fans are the dumbest fans in the NFL.” W-H-A-T-E-V-E-R !!!

    Tickerdr,

    Good points you’re making…

But Winston does a phenomenal job hitting benchs and outs. Timing routes.
But I understand the issues you mention and it’s more about the trajectory of the ball. It appears Winston tries to complete the pass to djax when the proven best method is to throw the ball with a high arc to a spot 20yrs past him and He will go run under it. JW throws more often than not late and by being late the ball must get there in a hurry. Which means that the ball isn’t in the air as long.

JW has the arm talent , he hasnt had the fastest releases. A good portion is just being too slow. He moves his schedule forward and I believe it will change the way the ball is delivered.

I read her voraciously, but I don’t often post, and I’m often too late to the discussion. I’ve certainly enjoyed your recent posts. I’m not sure what you mean by benches, but to me the “out” patterns again are good for Jameis, who is then throwing to the point where the sideline meets the receiver, which he is quite good at.

Trade him while his stock is high.
