Mitch Unrein To Injured Reserve; Could Return Week 9

September 3rd, 2018

Out

The Buccaneers’ defensive line depth officially took another hit this morning.

Bucs fans are aware that manbeast rookie Vita Vea, Tampa Bay’s first-round pick, hasn’t practiced since July with a calf injury.

Today, versatile defensive end/tackle Mitch Unrein, acquired in March in free agency, will head to injured reserve, presumably because he hasn’t recovered from a concussion suffered about one month ago. Unrein, 31, is eligible for a Week 9 return if medically cleared to play. Unrein came to the Bucs from the Bears with a history of concussion.

For those who missed it, defensive tackle Jerel Worthy made the Bucs roster after getting picked up off the street in mid-August. The former Packers second-round pick was with Buffalo last season and has impressed the powers at One Buc Palace.

Joe suspects Worthy, 28, who had ties to defensive line coach Brentson Buckner before arriving in Tampa, will get his share of playing time Sunday in New Orleans. Of course, Joe is hoping Vea magically appears at practice today and can go against the Saints.

Unrein’s done. This was not his 1st concussion. And it must be a life threatening one. Good luck to the guy. He will collects his salary for the year
and goes the way of easy Sweezy. Waiver wires here we come!!

  2. BucEmUp Says:

This team is just cursed. The dark cloud remains over One Buc…or whoever it was sold out to ….

  3. Bird Says:

    Agree with above

Need 8 weeks to get back to field from concussion.
If minor concussion they could be patient and maybe he missed just another week

To many concussions causes a man to think about his future Might not ever return Buckner was high on him too. Vea needs to get back soon

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Saw that coming with Unrein not even being on the practice field in a floppy hat since getting concussed.

Maybe the Bucs should give Clinton McDonald a call.

I suspect Vea will be practicing this week and playing on Sunday.

  5. Buc believer Says:

    He must have Sweezys agent

  6. Architek Says:

    Dammm

  7. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Any good DT on the waiver wire?

  8. Trench War Says:

I can hear the haters already, “it’s all Jason Licht’s fault”

  9. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

First excuse of the season just minutes after a no excuse post…. its a bucs life

Bucs are NOT cursed. Its a minor league organization top to bottom trying to compete in the major leagues.

  10. Buc believer Says:

@Trench… it’s not Licht personally we hate it’s the 22-42 record we can’t stand. Think about it he needs 3 really great seasons to just be a .500 general manager. Just to be mediocre!

  11. ben Says:

the the 1st 2 picks in this years draft are playing great,huh..

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

Bad news. I hope he’s alright. Next man up, no excuses.

  13. JabooBuc Says:

BucBeliever: “he must have Sweezy’s agent”. What does that even mean? Are you suggesting he just came here to grab a check?

  14. Mike Says:

    Good point buc believer

  15. Marc Says:

    JOE,

Please keep your loyal readers posted regarding Vea’s status this afternoon. Also, do you have any information regarding why Stevie T was cut? Seems like we could use him now. One last question before I hang up: what is Beau Allen’s status.

If you’re saying .500 is mediocre in the NFL, please look up all- time winning % by team.
I think you might be surprised.

This one hurts. I am a Licht fan but this mistake is hard to justify.

Most times you can’t predict injuries…exceptions being perhaps a blown knee where the guy hasn’t clearly demonstrated he’s healed but worst of all are concussions. How on earth did Licht overlook this. Perhaps he didn’t and figured he’d just gamble…bad choice.

Watching a documentary on CTE one of the points that amazed me…we tend to focus on the giant hits to the noggin and indeed those can be dangerous. In terms of CTE however this doc pointed out that the constant collisions between the giants on the line are actually worse…it’s the REPEATED pounding of the head that really does some severe damage.

So a WR who had a concussion has a far better chance of healing than a lineman whose noggin is going to collide with another noggin on virtually every play.

I wish Unrein the best but it’s probably time for him to retire. Wouldn’t wish to see him live the rest of his life with scrambled eggs for brains.

  18. Stanglassman Says:

Stevie Tu’ikolovatu was waived on 8/17 with a medical designation. I would think if he is now healthy and they think he is better than Worthy they’d bring him back.

  19. Tony LA Says:

No, you guys are right. Licht is great!
There’s no way this team would be better right now if we’d taken Derwin James and a more prototype back like Royce Freeman.

  20. jmarkbuc Says:

    Pick

    Still think Vea plays??

  21. reality-is-a-beotch Says:

IT IS THE GM’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT THE ROSTER IS BUILT DEEP ENOUGH TO HANDLE ISSUES LIKE THIS. It’s OWNERSHIPS RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE A COMPETENT GM IS IN PLACE….

I realize responsibility especially personal responsibility is a no-no in today’s society but the bucs are are a perfect example of no accountability nor anyone taking responsibility for ANYTHING! Every Year!

Every year this minor league franchise gambles on entire position groups and the results speak for themselves a long distinguished list of basement titles.

  22. Buc believer Says:

Sorry Dooshlarue that I aspire to greater things than a .500 record

  23. Hodad Says:

No we’re not cursed, we just have a G.M. who doesn’t have an eye for free agents. The warning signs with Unrein were there, Licht ignored them. How much Glazer loot will he blow before being fired? How many second round picks who don’t pan out must we endure with this guy?

  24. Buc believer Says:

@Jaboo… I don’t suggest I can read minds or guess motives. You would have to ask him… better yet ask Licht why he sucks so bad at signing free agents.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Vea won’t be back until Wednesday or so.

  26. Wesley Says:

    Cursed, plain and simple.

  27. Trench War Says:

Well that opens up a spot on the roster until at least week 9. If a new player takes advantage of this opportunity there’s a possibility Unrein may never see the field again this season. What a shame. One word of advice for Jason would be when a player has a history of red flags avoid at all cost because they have a way of biting us in the bum.

  28. JabooBuc Says:

Bucs believer: you do realize he’s been in the NFL concussion protocol and really has no say in the matter? It’s no imaginary injury or con job to collect a check. He was diagnosed with a concussion which means it’s now out of his and the teams hands.

  29. JabooBuc Says:

Bucbeliever: why don’t you tell us who is so great at evaluating FA’s?

  30. Getaclue Says:

Nothing to see here. Guy was a depth signing anyways. Talking about a guy with 4.5 sacks and 0 forced fumbles TOTAL over a period of 8 seasons that got hyped up by PFF nerds as something special. When he was singed last year people said “who?”. For the same amount of money we could of kept Akeem Spence who is better ,younger and without the medical background

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Eagles named Foles the starter. Believe it or not, that is good news. No way he has two good years in a row.

  32. Buc believer Says:

@Jaboo… Kevin Colbert of the Steelers and Bill Belechik of the Pats are 2 that come to mind.

  33. Dooshlarue Says:

Being as the top team on the list is the Cowboys at .563, .500 puts you just into the top half of the league, Redskins.
So yeah, again, .500 is pretty good.

    Reality, not lower standards.

  34. Dooshlarue Says:

    BTW bb,

All 3 “great” teams in our division are less than .500 all-time win %.

  35. Eric Says:

Looks like there are some promising excuses developing.

    Like clockwork.

  36. Godeep66 Says:

Yes another example of a veteran making a stop in Tampa to pickup a check. SMH

  37. Defense Rules Says:

I really hope that Mitch Unrein opts to hang it up instead of trying to get back on the field. Last year he had the same situation happen in Chicago (took him a long time to come back from a concussion in training camp). At 31 years old, and this is his 3rd major concussion it sounds like, he doesn’t need any more pounding on his head. Comes a time in every profession when you have to say ‘Enough is enough’. It sounds like Mitch is at that point IMO. Risking serious brain damage isn’t worth a few extra shekels.

  38. Darin Says:

Big loss. Hope he gets well soon. Some things are more important than football.

  39. Bob in Valrico Says:

Agree that Mitch should hang it up. Any player that has a concussion that takes a long time to recover should consider hanging it up then ,because the next one is almost always worse. Licht has to do more homework on free agents, believe
Mitch has missed 31 games in 8 years.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Not sure why people thought this guy would do anything here, he was literally a 31-year old 4th string defensive lineman in Chicago, not exactly sure why people thought he’d make a leap at this stage of his career.
