Keeping A Secret

September 25th, 2018

Dirk Koetter keeping quarterback news to himself.

It seems Dirk Koetter may be going 1950s, old-school football here.

In his day-after press conference, the Bucs head coach admitted he knows who is starting at quarterback Sunday in Chicago. He’s told both America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

But Koetter isn’t saying anything more than that — fully ignoring Jay Glazer of FOX Sports already spilled the beans.

Koetter is taking this many steps further. It sounds as if he has no plans to announce a starting quarterback for the rest of the season.

“You never really know how it is going to go week-to-week,” Koetter said. “I have an idea how it is going to go but this is an ever-changing game.”

Joe appreciates that Koetter doesn’t want to tip his hand for the Bears, but why stop there? Why not float rumors that Gerald McCoy has a busted up shoulder (he did have his left shoulder wrapped up after the game) or that Lavonte David has a bum ankle or have DeSean Jackson standing around in street clothes watching practice with media in the vicinity while Jackson is leaning on crutches (a decades-long high school stunt).

Not willing to say who his long-term starting quarterback is? Well, perhaps Koetter is being forthright? Maybe he doesn’t like either quarterback?

Man, no profession has remotely close to the paranoia of football coaches. They see ghosts around every corner and think they possess the plans for the Manhattan Project in their desks.

So what next since Koetter is going 1950s high school football? Is he going to have players change their uniform numbers on gameday to try to trick opposing coaches?

I can see why you get the cold shoulder from the players/coaches.

  2. Ndog Says:

This is just another shot at Jameis just like the way he handled Jameis injury last year. There are reasons some coaches are career assistant coaches and this is a prime example of why Koetter will always be an average coach at best. Make a freaking decision and stick with it. If it’s Fitz trade Jameis then maybe you can find another job at the of the year when you get fired you moron. To not show faith in Jameis is like saying your done with him so have the balls to move on but no you will keep around in case your wrong like a little bit@h. This franchise makes me sick and I have been a season ticket holder since 1996.

  3. buddy Says:

God I can’t wait until Koetter is fired on Black Monday. Counting the days. This guy is such a tool

  4. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

But Joe if he tells we miss this kind of output from you. And you know the ripple effect that could cause in the bay area. We don’t want that now do we?

    Did you watch the purge?

  5. Joe Says:

I can see why you get the cold shoulder from the players/coaches.

    Opposite, actually.

  6. Sweeptheleg Says:

The only people mad that Winston isn’t starting game 4 are FSU fans.

  7. DBS Says:

Ndog did you even read this? How do you know it is not Jameis?? I think it is great. People that started this get this answer. Now wait and find out unless your ” sources” spill the beans.

  8. No Fair League Says:

Don’t rule out someone leaking to BSPN.

  9. Miguel Grande Says:

The cold shoulder is reserved for Tom Jones and Tiki Barber.

Why should Koetter tell Chicago who to prepare for?

Desean’s punt return was the highlight and lowlight of this season so far. That was scary good. Punt return TD’s are game breakers and season makers when we seem to win or lose by one score every week.

Da Bears special teams coach won’t be able to sleep this week.

  10. TJ Says:

He should start them both. Imagine 1st play, both are in shotgun or pistol formation. One could receive the snap, toss it back to the other, throw a forward pass. Man wouldn’t that be fun! 😂

  11. Joe Says:

Don’t rule out someone leaking to BSPN.

Would not be shocked one bit if Jenna breaks the news.

  12. SOEbuc Says:

Jameis starts week 4. He’s the STARTING QB. Didn’t pick up his fifth year so he could sit on the bench all season. If he throws three picks and we get 14 pts and a loss to chicago, than put Fitz back in the next three games after the bye. They’re not going to gamble on 35 year old Fitzpatrick to become their knight in shimmering armor.

  13. Wesley Says:

Sweeptheleg – that’s simply not true i for one am not a Nole fan. In fact i’d say the people hating on him are Nole haters and have been hating on him since day one. Along with of course a handful of racists.

  14. Godeep66 Says:

@Ndog: the reality is starting to hit you like a snowflake hitting the windshield. You are now in denial stage, next will be resentment for ever supporting the clown, then to be followed by the good ole “Payback”. The payback will be in form of messaging along the lines “I will never support the Bucs again”!!!! Boo who little snowflake. You should run up to Sears and get one of those large deep freezers and jump in before you totally melt down. That goes for all of you JW/FSU supporters. And to think: FSU lost to a team that lost to Old Dominion.

  15. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Where’s the story about how garbage Brent Grimes looked last night? And how we would have been exponentially better off using that money to go after Trumaine Johnson.

  16. Sweeptheleg Says:

Fitz is starting week 4. You can bank on that. Guaranteed. No way they bench the guy setting records whose also piloting the NFLs number 1 offense.

  17. Godeep66 Says:

@Soebuc: you need to know what your talking about before you type a message. The Bucs can walk away from next year’s money if they chose to do so. They have until March the 23rd of 2018 to make that decision. On the other hand, if he plays this year and gets hurt, the Bucs have to pay him all of the 20.5 million. All of you uneducated, non business owner clowns would change your tune if you understood what I just typed.

  18. AlteredEgo Says:

What ev’ah…Hugh Culverhouse voice……at some point after this Cinderella Chapter in Bucs history closes …..Jameis will have to be played at least the final 8 games to decide the long term plan….If Fitz continues winning 2 out of 3 the FO “could”….chose to go with Fitz and Griffin in 2019…..draft another QB in the 1st round….use the Jameis saving$$$$’s to futher shore up in free agency…

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

This is a Tom Jones kind of hit piece. Let’s spew a little more venom for the listen, read, and repeat crowd. The avid CNN watchers, and race baiters.

  20. Darin Says:

    Sweeptheleg
Exactly. Is this really a secret? Fitz is 2-1 against hardest schedule in a long time. He now has quite a few nfl all time passing records over first 3 games. And Dirk thinks the Bears dont know who will be starting? Comical. If Dirk wants to lose the team, games and fans go ahead n make the switch. Not sure why some people think its a question. Never know from week to week as Dirk said but right now u can’t make a switch.

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

“At this point does it really matter?”

  22. Lamarcus Says:

This is as silly as those Bucs fans with their clown beards in the stadium last night…..

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Godeep66…..your business HAS to be thriving with you on JBF morning, noon, and night.

Will you go away when Jameis is the starter this year and next?

  24. Buc1987 Says:

BTW….the Glazers to do NOT care about money when it comes to this team. Just look at how much they waste year in and year out?

Are they still paying Schiano and Gruden? Prolly so.

  25. AlteredEgo Says:

I am a Buc fan soley….sure I have favorite players ….but gessh I really feel for the Jameis cultists getting all twitchy with withdrawal symptoms ….

  26. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Ndog you a season ticket holder since 1996 and how many times have you sold your seat my guess is most of them…

  27. Godeep66 Says:

@buc1987: will you go away when Fitzpatrick is named the starter. Or better yet change your user name just like all the other snowflakes have done over the past two weeks.

  28. Godeep66 Says:

The Tampa fan base should be very happy that Fitzpatrick has been named the starter. Those Fitzpatrick fake beards sure are cheaper than the females fans having to rock out chasity belts if JW were the starter.

  29. Dave Pear Says:

    Hey Godeep66,

They have until March the 23rd of 2018 to make that decision.
    ———————————————————————————-

    Dipstick,
You do realize we are in September now don’t you?
    Moron.

  30. Godeep66 Says:

    2019 pear.

  31. Godeep66 Says:

JBoo who. He will be a Trivia question in ten years. And it will be for the off the field stuff.

  32. Wausa Says:

We have a lot of bad fans and my guess is the coaches aren’t much better.
Jamies should start but I doubt he does.
Mike Smith should be fired but I doubt that happens either.

I hope I am wrong but if Koetter doesn’t start Jamies and doesn’t get rid of Mike Smith it will ultimately doom Dirk Koetter as coach of the Bucs.

  33. gilhealy Says:

Godeep is such a sensitive little fella. What a good boy.

  34. Dave Pear Says:

    Godeep66,

    You are still a MORON.
    Say SNOWFLAKE some more.
    Man, that never gets old.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

fitz has earned the right to start. I doubt whether he will the entire season. Jameis just better be ready when his time comes. I do hope the glazers step in eventually and fire Mike Smith. Give him a permamant seat in his pressbox. He’s one sorry excuse for a Defensive coordinator in my opinion. He’s had 91 points given up by his Defense already and we are not even a fourth of the way thru the season. We won’t get no ring like that!

  36. D the Bucs fan Says:

I want Jameis to play with the new play caller to see how it works out. When Fitz was starting last year he wasn’t putting up these numbers. I for one don’t think us losing is on the qbs. The rest of the team looks under coached or run, blitz, zone, schemes suck. That’s on the coaching. Over the years Koetters questionable decision making has put us in a position to lose. He and coach Smitty coach SCARED that’s what got them run from ATL. I know this from living up here trust me nothing had changed with those two. We have to win. I don’t think they even talk about the Superbowl. Cuz they aren’t those type of coaches. If that’s not the goal why the F are they here?

  37. Ndog Says:

Pryda…sec 147 well I guess your guessing sucks cause I have missed exactly one game since then including preseason and that was the season opener against the Saints one year cause I was out of town due to work. Strike one tough guy.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk uses the 1950s coaches handbook for everything else so this makes sense. You punt from your opponents 36 in a shootout and you punt late in the game. The coaches handbook demands it and no one goes against the book except for communists.

  39. Cgmaster Says:

I’m guessing fitz starts this week as a final test run against the bears. If he continues to light it up, koetter is going to stuck with him. But this could get real dicey quick. How short a leash does fitz have? If he loses next week , we see Jameis after the buy. I just dont think koetter is going to start Jameis on a short week.

  40. Joel Says:

FSU fan here. Wish we would cut Winston.

  41. Joel Says:

And not revealing starter makes Bears prep for both. Not quite sure who cant understand that.

  42. FreeTheSecretWeapon Says:

    Ok IM SOLD…

I no longer want JW as our QB…

In fact I no longer want DJax, ME, OJ, Brate, Hump or Godsend…

Why??? Because I am a Bucs Fan… The best Players deserve to be on other teams….

    Signed… REAL BUCS FAN

  43. FreeTheSecretWeapon Says:

Oh…. I see… “The NFL is rigged” is a cooment you dont allow… Hmmmmmm

  44. Rod Munch Says:

    Thanks for sharing that Joel.

Now go back to playing with your crayons.

    LOL!

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Heh. I may not always be right, but I’ve hit the nail on the head lately. Click my name to see my scenarios on the QB situation. I posted it this morning.

The secret one was my favorite. The media won’t like it, because they want stories. Controversy. Regardless, this may not even be about the Bears.

I think either of them can beat the Bears. No, I think this is about the game after the bye. A division game.

Regardless, the secret will be outed the moment Jameis starts, because they won’t go back to Fitz.

  46. View from 132 Says:

The funniest part about this is how would possibly prepare differently for these two QBs? We run the same offense. The QB may get hot and throw 4 TDs, throw receivers open, and look like a Hall of Famer OR make very bad decisions, wildly overthrow open targets, pull the ball down and run slowly, slide awkwardly, and force the ball to Mike Evans who will probably catch it anyway. And now add look for Brate in the Red Zone. If you wanted a perfect scout team QB for Fitz, it’s Jameis – and vice versa.

  47. Not there yet Says:

Yep amateurs all of them which is why you would say something so stupid. People better hope the glazers don’t start looking sideways at the coaches for bad play. If they feel Licht is giving Koetter and smith talent but they don’t know what to do with it bye bye.

I can understand people thinking Winston is not the guy but you can’t be stupid enough to think he’s not the guy because we have Fitzpatrick.

  48. Buc68 Says:

We need to determine if Winston is the guy. It’s the most important issue this franchise faces. If he’s not, cut or deal him at the end of the season. Winning a championship is the goal. Did anyone not see Fitzpatrick last night in the clutch throw three straight passes to the Steelers? What’s the value in seeing if Fitz can get us to a wild card game? Object is to win it all, Fitz ain’t doing that, and we need to see if Winston has that potential.

  49. Mike Says:

    Clean house-

    GM and coaches stink-

No way Monken called last nights first half-

    McCoy should be gone-

    Defense is a laughing stock

  50. Posey99 Says:

I’m a fan so I care about having an advantage . Obviously preparing for both qb’s is more difficult than preparing for 1. That’s not high school football, that’s common with NFL teams

  51. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    View from 132 Says
“The funniest part about this is how would possibly prepare differently for these two QBs? We run the same offense.”

Well, consider this: Would you prepare differently for Aaron Rodgers vs Tom Brady? One is a pure pocket passer, and the other has the potential to scramble.

Fitzpatrick can scramble, but just barely. If he leaves the pocket, it is to lumber forward, to probably make a poor attempt at avoiding a sack, or to buy time to throw the ball away.

Both are pocket passers, yes, but Jameis is a greater threat outside the pocket because he can run (with force), block, or throw accurately just before he crosses the line (so teams have to try to chase him down AND keep covering WRs. Fitz just does not pose the same threats.

On the flip side, because Fitz stays in the pocket more, the oline can protect him a little better.

Fitz may be a pocket passer, but he is no gunslinger. He only had one bad quarter in his 12 played, which is pretty good, but unfortunately it cost us a game (not that it was all his fault. Johnson negating a return for a touchdown cost us the game).

  52. horse liver Says:

Good for Dirk. He needs to go spend time with Mike Smith and develop a plan to improve the defense…….or get someone else that can.
