Report: Jameis Is Benched

September 23rd, 2018

Backup.

When America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, returns to One Buc Palace in two days after serving his three-game sentence from NFL strongman Roger Goodell, he will do so as a backup quarterback.

That’s the word from Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

“Even when Jameis Winston comes back it will be Ryan Fitzpatrick’s team,” Glazer said this morning on the FOX NFL pregame show. “They want to keep going with FitzMagic. … Unless Ryan Fitzpatrick does something dramatically bad, it will be FitzMagic going forward.”

Now common sense suggested the way Fitz was playing he was going to keep his job until he stubbed his toe. Joe wonders exactly what “dramatically bad” means. Does that mean unless Fitz throws six picks in a game he is the starter the rest of the season?

Glazer is one of the best scoop artists in the NFL. Joe cannot remember when the guy has swung and missed.

Joe understands, sadly, there is a sect of Bucs fans who will miss work tomorrow from their terrible hangover as this news will have them celebrating so hard today and tonight.

Common sense move. If it aint broke… leave it the hell alone. Go Bucs

  2. Hawk Says:

I don’t see how Glazers ‘scoop’ is any different than what 99% of the country has been saying.
It still doesn’t mean Winston won’t play/start. It just means, that common sense will dictate *when* he plays/starts.
IOW, nothing to see here. More of the same, but from a different source.

  3. R.O. Says:

There was no way JW3 was going to start in Chicago when he hasn’t practiced in a month. Unless we were 0-3 and not scoring points.

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

It’s the locker room that is making the call…

  5. Dubcity06 Says:

Also, a QB CAN get better at 35. Its a mental position more than a physical one

  6. NPR SageBoy Says:

    Jameis who?

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

Sounded like a guy with an opinion and not someone who has a “inside scoop”

  8. JimmyJack Says:

It’s the proper decision. It benefits everybody in the lockerroom who is battling and having fun.

Momentum is real is sports and our team has it right now. You don’t make any decisions that can affect that momentum.

This decision benefits everybody except Winston……..if he takes it personally. However, if Jamies is the professional I believe he is then he will take this opportunity to devolope his craft and learn from a different perspective.

How Winston handles this will say a lot about his character and help determine if he is the QB that can lead this franchise. I have all the faith in the world in Winston and I believe he is fully committed to Tampa Bay and will prove it this season whether on the field or not.

Keep your chin up Jamies and keep working hard. You have tons of support here in Tampa!!

    GOO BUCS!!!!!

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

Life is like a box of chocolates….

  10. Oneilbucs Says:

Just trade him let him go win somewhere else cuz this franchise sucks anyway you sit Winston for fizpatrick when you know he’s not the future. That is crazy to me . If I was Winston I will ask to be traded. People try to act like this is the same team he had last year and the same play calling. So now I guess fizpatrick is the future of the bucs ok go ask last 7 teams he played for if they trade Winston with out giving him chance with the new play calling n players I’m done with this team cause that means they going to draft another quarter back and hope he is good why Winston will go win a super bowl somewhere else just like every quarterback the bucs had so trade he win a super bowl somewhere else why y’all still be hopeing

  12. Gman Says:

Not much of a stretch…unless Fitz gets hurt, nobody expected Jameis to come back for Chicago. After the bye may be up for discussion.

  13. Gman Says:

I believe Jay Glazer also broke another story…Water is wet.

  14. BROCKTACULAR Says:

Nothing to see here folks…Move on…

  15. Lamarcus Says:

This gets me upset with moves like this. It’s not about JW and his actions but come on. Yout getting ahead of yourself way when we didn’t have to go there.

The best move is to move in from JW from here on out.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Calm down y’all. It doesn’t mean they are moving on from Winston. All they are doing is keeping in a guy who is playing great football.

In no way are they giving up on Winston and I’m unsure why you think that. Just remember we could have drafted a QB in this draft and we didn’t………if that doesn’t tell you they are committed to Winston then I think your having clouded judgement.

  17. JameisWin55 Says:

I feel this is a stupid move if everything is the same I would understand it but Monken playcalling, D-Jack second year in the system getting more comfortable same for OJ Howard the emergence of Godwin coupled with the hard running presence of Peyton Barber, more time to thrive by O-Line Jameis has never had these assets I feel he should be given chance with resources even if it’s a short leash back to Fitz Jameis is 23-24 Fitz is 35 he has this year and maybe next why alienate the future of your franchise for a year and half run would be different if it was Ryan Griffen a fellow young QB

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jay Glazer cited no sources at all.

Koetter is not going to commit before the need arises, and it hasn’t yet. Therefore, Jay Glazer is completely guessing.

  19. WillieG Says:

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. The Bucs are 0-2 if JW started.
He starts off each game way too excited. That causes overthrown balls to wide open receivers (like the first play of last week’s game). That leads to slow starts and the Bucs being way behind. That leads to JW taking chances and turning the ball over.

Keep him on the bench. Better yet, trade him for a first round pick to Buffalo.

  20. Not there yet Says:

You can not think of a lot of qb’s who won jobs this way. Brady started due to injury, Toni romo and basically even if it was a rookie or Ryan Griffin playing this way you wouldn’t take them out. Common sense move especially if your a franchise, gm and coach that badly needs these wins. How Winston feels about it is irrelevant. It’s your own doing so live with it on the bench and pray you get a second chance

I would love for Winston to get another shot at leading the team but not if it means Fitz has to outright suck and lose for him to get the chance, I prefer wins over who’s playing and I don’t care who delivers the goods

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Not There…….Dirk and Licht need to win at all costs or they get 🔥. That is one aspect many fans seem to overlook. If you just put yourself into Dirk’s shoes the decision is a very easy one.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    WillieG Says
“I’ve said it before and I will say it again. The Bucs are 0-2 if JW started.”

Nevermind that he played better than Fitzpatrick in the preseason.

  23. Oneilbucs Says:

I here you not there yet. But I will say this he never played in a play off game with jets they needed 1 more win to make the playoffs n he threw 6ints n miss the playoffs so don’t forget that. Every time when a team need him he always have let them down so don’t be surprise if the same thing happened again.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Oniel……Yeah I remember that. Fitz choked in that game. If I recall they were playing a below average team, maybe the Bills.

But at the same time the team is doing something they have never done with Dirk on charge………..putting points on the scoreboard.

While there are a lot of factors involved with our offensive surge Fitz surely is one of them.

  26. Oneilbucs Says:

I hope they trade Winston to the Giants I can promise you they will be in the Superbowl with him this year. So please bucs trade Winston so he can win a super bowl. And we will still be hoping for a playoff birth.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Consider this:

Mind games. Dirk Koetter could let this ‘leak’ out to make the Bears prepare for Fitzpatrick, then stick in Winston to catch them off guard.

Heck, he could list Fitz as the starter, put him in for the first play, and then switch to Winston. The Bears would be totally off guard.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Saint’s just tied with Falcons. 1:15 left on clock. tied at 37 points each.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Oniel officially confirmed as a non Buc fan.

Setup the plank Boys!!!!! We got a traitor among us.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai…….the Falcons have to be the worst tackling team in the NFL.

  31. passthebuc Says:

@Joe. believe none of what you hear and half of what you see.

    DEWEY WINS, DEWEY WINS.

  32. 1sparkybuc Says:

Fitz will fizzle at some point….not my wish, I’d love to see the Bucs go undefeated, but that’s not likely. Jameis is still the franchise. Fitz is still the backup after Chicago.

  33. ben Says:

Finally the bearded face of the team all fans can be proud of!…local and national……

  34. Buchead5588 Says:

I Don’t believe it I can get until after the Bye week if it’s longer than that this staff needs to go When Jameis was throwing for 236 yards an 2TDs in the preseason he was the best rated QB in the preseason week 6 Jameis better be Starting

  35. Jman Says:

Trade Winston for firepower to get Tua in 2020. Good deal

  36. ColonelAngus Says:

Clowns whining about preseason stats! Preseason means 2 things:
    #1 – Jack
    and
    #2 – Sh!t

Enjoy being 2-0 for once in a generation and stop crying because your favorite player isn’t playing. Its about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, not the Tampa Bay (Insert Players Name). I could care less who the QB is.

  37. AlteredEgo Says:

    Exactly Colonel…

  38. Dan Says:

Thats what happens what you act like a fool…. You don’t want to lose your job, don’t get drunk and grope a women when you have a girlfriend/fiance… Easy peasy

  39. Sweeptheleg Says:

If you use the letter “N” for the word “AND” please got back to 3rd grade.

I stop reading any post that uses “n” for “and”

Is it that hard to add 2 extra letters?

  40. SteelStudBuc Says:

Make him earn it back. Last thing this team needs is a rusty QB coming off suspension with a fumble and 3 interceptions with one going pick six. Go with Fitz and let rusty Jameis work out the bugs in practice. If Fitz comes out flat and this team needs a spark in a few games then u put Jameis in. Not a second sooner.

  41. Blue-footed booby Says:

Thank you Dirk Koetter. Time to dump America’s embarrassment that is Jameis Winston once and for all. Ship him to San Francisco if Jimmy G is done for the year. Of course that assumes Kyle Shanahan even wants that turnover machine for his quarterback.

  42. TonyC Says:

I really don’t ever see him playing in Tampa again. I believe they’ve grown to recognize Ryan Griffin as the future beyond Fitz. Just my opinion. With so many offensive weapons we need a qb who can make good decisions, spread the ball around, and be less prone to erratic on field mistakes.

  43. Oneilbucs Says:

Jimmy Jack . I’ve been a fan for over 20 years now. I love to see my team win regardless of who playing quarterback. I just know 1 thing that Ryan Fizpatrick is not a franchise quarter back. I know a lot of people that hate Winston will love to see him fail. A lot of people on this site, I know his race plays apart of it for some of y’all. If this team and fans think we going to the playoffs with fizpatrick when every time a team depends on him he let them down then eather you hate Winston or just don’t know football. I want to see Winston with this play calling and if he suck then and only then you start looking to draft another quarter back. I just know one thing that Winston have always been a winer until he came here. Look at every quarter back that leaves here they always go win a super bowl somewhere else. And I know with Winston talent he will be the next one if we trade him. So I will said it again it’s not that after 13 years fizpatrick is a great quarter back now . It’s the play calling and our rookies from last year that got beeter. If Winston was playing we will be 2 n 0 still . I just know hate when I see it.

  44. BrianBucs Says:

Winston’s new best friend for the entire season should be the clipboard. He should watch Fitz very closely and see how a true professional QB plays in the NFL

  45. Blue-footed booby Says:

    @ Oneilbucs

Yes you would be correct that Winston had won more games than lost dating back to his college and high school days before he was drafted. But the cold harsh reality is that this happens to a lot of quarterbacks when they get drafted in the NFL. Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Chris Weinke, Ken Dorsey, Jason White, and the list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff who had a losing record in college are playing like pro bowl caliber quarterbacks and winning in the NFL. It’s just the way things go in the tough to play NFL.

  46. Big Stinky Says:

Winston will get his chance before the season is over. There is no way Fitzpatrick can keep this up even though I want him to. Let’s just hope that JW can pick up where Fitz left off. This team has the talent to go to the Playoffs if the defense can get a little better. I can’t wait until the game tomorrow night. Been wanting to see them play all week. All the big plays have been fun to watch, hope the offense can keep it up. It’s all up to Fitzy whether we win or lose. The Bucs are going to have to average 30 points a game until the defense can get. JW has never averaged more than 20 points a game and that’s not enough. Why do most of you think that he would be playing at the level Fitzpatrick is? We would probably be 0-2 if Jameis had been playing. Bring on those Steelers before the magic runs out. Hope we start out 6-0 because we have never done that. I want Fitzy to break all kinds of records while he is in the zone. Still curious whether JW has taken that next step. We need to find out what to do with him before the season is over. Is he the future or not? I hope we haven’t wasted 3 years on him. He did look good in the preseason though.

  47. Jman Says:

Tua is the future of this franchise if the Bucs are smart. Can resign everyone with a qb on a rookie deal. Would win two like Seattle should have.

  48. Jman Says:

But that requires foresight I guess

  49. AlteredEgo Says:

If the Bucs can generate a running game Fitz can keep this going all season with the receiving weapons at his disposal….could trade Jameis to the 49ers for Garoppolo heads up…..

  50. Big Stinky Says:

If Jameis can cut down on the turnovers he could be great.

  51. Bob in Valrico Says:

Fitz has earned the right to continue to start until he fizzles badly. He is also doing the Bucs and Jameis a favor by playing against good defenses and winning. Some of Jameis slowest starts have at the hands of good defenses. The Bucs are having fun . The fans are having fun. Montgen is having fun. Koetter is having fun. Only a Kiljoy would want to change that.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Oniel…….I guess your just a different type of fan then me. I would never hope for my team to make a bad trade that wins somebody else a SB. I surely would plead for it.

Maybe you were trying to be funny or something. If so I didn’t see the humor in it.

  53. AlteredEgo Says:

O’Neil,,,, Jameis has been a winner everywhere… you mean HS & 2 years of college. He has had a shaky QB performance here with the Bucs … I hope he gets back on the field so we can find out for sure if he is the future of the Bucs

  54. Architek Says:

Tampa Bay Bucs Team > Winston

    Team first

  55. Oneilbucs Says:

Again I want to see Winston with this play calling. That’s all I’m saying blue foot . All of those quarterbacks you are talking about have much better coaching then Winston Goff was a bust to a lot of people then Fisher leave and now he’s playing good and the hold Vince Young thing who was his coach Jeff Fisher . But the people on this site act like Winston played bad in every game he played. Despite the fact that the play calling was trash . I don’t think he can learn anything from a guy who played for 7 different teams and never played in a play off game . Again go ask the pass 7 teams he played for. He will not lead this team to the Superbowl or maybe the playoffs. But so far he is playing good I will give him credit for that . But to say he’s better than Winston or he gives us the better chance to win a Superbowl is just crazy.

  56. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

There is no one to blame but Jameis himself. I am sure he realizes this and will accept being a bench warmer until his opportunity arise again. Not sure how bad this affects his contact negotiation for next year. This last episode is going to cost Jameis a lot $$$

  57. Oneilbucs Says:

And let’s not forget he just turned 24 years old. And fizpatrick is 35 years old and never won nothing. Winston is a franchise quarter back it’s just to bad this franchise are some of the people on this site wouldn’t know that . And by the way blue foot how come fizpatrick gets all these chances and Winston don’t ? Why cut Winston ? I bet you one thing Winston won’t get to be a 35 year old quarterback who played for 7 different teams and He played in a play off game.

  58. Trench War Says:

A backups backup …oh the irony

  59. BucNole Says:

this team better get their heads right
The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming to town tomorrow
    ONE GAME AT A TIME
We got no time for distractions!!!
this QB situation will settle itself in time
Better be looking at Monday Night!!!!!!!!

  60. Hoopstar82 Says:

Cant wait till fitz goes on his massive losing streaks like he always did everywhere hes been hes a streaky player and he will come down hard i hope jameis goes somewhere else so it can be another qb we lost

  61. T REX Says:

LOL at Oneil throwing a tantrum. But I want Jameis!

    WAAAAAAAA!!!!

    Freaking FSU honks.

  62. Season Is Over Says:

Does this mean there will be less Marino and Manning to Winston comparison articles this offseason?

  63. DB55 Says:

Wow! I’m just seeing this now, smh.

If this is true and Fitz remains the starter not only should Winston demand a trade but it will go down as one of the Bucs worst decisions of all time, right there with Doug Williams and bo jackson.

  66. BigHogHaynes Says:

    Common Sense!

  67. Mike10 Says:

Wasn’t Glazer the guy last year that said there was a “rift” between Jameis and Koetter right around the time ppl were saying we were getting Gruden?

  68. Rob Says:

It’s funny how some people are so desperate to throw around the term ‘franchise’. JW is an average qb on any other team. Wildly inaccurate on balls pass 20 yards, horrible decisions of epic proportions on and off the field. He’s a garbage time qb. He starts games like he’s fighting off a hangover, he doesn’t start to ball out until the game is damn near out of reach. His stats are padded by prevent defenses, and y’all act like he’s the second coming.

  69. VFL98 Says:

IF your a “true” Buc fan then you are celebrating. Why wouldn’t you be??? Common Sense!! How cool is this? We have a number 1 draft pick, Heisman trophy winner, and National champion as a back up QB. Only Joe would think otherwise..

  70. Walter Seidel Says:

This is THE BEST NEWS I’ve read on JBF in MONTHS!!! YES!!!!

  71. Jeagan1999 Says:

You gotta keep rollin with Fitz! He has this team believing they can score from any place on the field. Jameis might be the future(or maybe not) but Fitz is the present. Stay the course.

    Believe in FITZMAGIC you muggles!

  72. Oneilbucs Says:

D55 you are right and don’t forget the other ones Michael Bennett, Talib. This will be the same thing if they trade him he will win somewhere else , and we will be still hoping for a playoff birth just like we did when they left. You are right Bo Jackson and Williams.

  73. Oneilbucs Says:

So I just hope y’all stay happy with fizpatrick cuz one thing I know is he did the same thing with jets and they still didn’t make the playoffs. Cuz when you need him he sucks .

  74. Oneilbucs Says:

It will be different if he did lead a team to the playoffs but he never did so why should any body have so much faith in fizpatrick after 13 years in the NFL.

  75. Walter Seidel Says:

So I just hope you stay unhappy Oneil, cuz when you need Jameis, he grabs crotch, lies, and gets suspended. It’s incredible how many “fans” are really NOT Buc fans, but rather “Jameis fans”……GO BUCS!!!

  76. Oneilbucs Says:

Walter I’m not mad that we are wining trust me. Fizpatrick as never led a team to the playoffs that’s my point . And he has been reason why cuz soon as they needed him that’s when he plays bad. So you tell me he’s 35 years old played for 7 different teams and this is only his 3rd time playing well and the season just started so we don’t know if he will keep this up and you name him the starter already. If Winston don’t get a chance to play this year he will ask for a trade and then he do like every body else like Steve Young , Doug Williams, Bo Jackson, Michel Bennett, Talib, and others and win somewhere else and we back hoping to make the playoffs. So that’s what I’m saying. Winston is 24 years old fizpatrick is 35 years old that played for 7 different teams and and never made the playoffs cuz of him not the defense’s he played with but him .

  77. D1 Says:

    Oneibucs,

If you’re spending all your time looking backwards and worried about the future
You can’t see the six inches in front of your face. Like the fact, no one, I repeat
It…NO ONE HAS NAMED FITZ THE STARTER BEYOND THE GAME WHICH IS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE TEAM.

You’re so worried about the past and so worried that a player will be successful somewhere else that you can’t see the right now. And right now, tonight fitz is starting. Next week, project all you like but you’re not making any decision and the starter and the team hasn’t done so either.

Last, how many former bucs vs former bucs who have left and won a sb..
Ratio is what 1000-1 . Yet you and DB bet on the 1 vs the 999. Then turn around and side with the 999 w fitz.

  78. Curry-Winston Says:

Wow…..funny thing is….Winston has been on fire since he came back from the injured shoulder last year and u clearly seen the difference between the 2 QBs this preseason…now all of a sudden yall are screaming fitz is ur starter…this is laughable…I personally hope fitz tears it up tonight and against Chicago……so Jamie’s can get away from u disgusting so called fans…..anybody with a touch of football wisdom know u dont bench ur franchise QB for a 37 year old journeyman. Jamies should demand a trade or be released…..leave this pathetic franchise…knowing Jameis this would be this best thing that ever happened 2 him….and he goes out and destroys the league..

  79. Oneilbucs Says:

D1 you have to look to the future also , and I will let it be known I don’t lose no sleep when the bucs win or lose I was just making a point . You can’t trade away all your young and up coming players you have to give them time to grow. I’m going to be real about it why do white quarterbacks get to have 5 or ten years to suck and still get back up jobs but Winston is 24 years old and people act like this is his 8 or 10 year in the league ? That’s the real question. I say keep Winston see what he does if he suck trade him if not keep him it’s that simple.
