Chris Conte On Injured Reserve

September 25th, 2018

Headed to IR.

It looks as though fan favorite Chris Conte’s season may be done. And so too could be his days as a Bucs safety?

The Bucs placed Conte on injured reserve today. The team is allowed to bring two guys back later in the season off injured reserve. Currently, those on the injured reserve list are cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, defensive tackle Mitch Unrein and offensive tackle Cole Gardner, who the Bucs liked a lot in training camp. Of course, who knows who else may be placed on injured reserve in the future?

If Conte’s season is over, he may be done with the Bucs. He is in the final year of his two-year contract and the Bucs did draft rookie safety Jordan Whitehead for a reason.

  1. Espo Says:

Whitehead is far better. Glad to see him grow with the team.

That’s me, retraining from saying anything negative about Conte.

  2. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

Oh Daaaaaaarn! I’m going to miss his elite athleticism and tackling ability

  3. D-Rome Says:

That’s unfortunate for Chris Conte. Hate to see his season end on such an embarrassing play.

The haters can laugh at him but if you look at the play the Bucs (Mike Smith) inexplicably rushed six on 3rd and 10. There was no other Bucs defender near McDonald and he laid out Conte long after he caught the ball for an easy first down. Bucs needed a stop there, and that’s not the right call to make in that situation.

  4. PAPA GIORGIO Says:

    Too bad, so sad…

  5. Neal Says:

What did he hurt? His Pride? I would wanna go on IR too after that embarrassing effort.

  6. Nprbuc Says:

More info please! What is the injury? Whitehead is growing swiftly. He would have beaten Conte out for the starting job shortly anyway and Conte would have been depth only.

  7. theodore Says:

If that play is in fact the last play of his career, now I feel bad for the guy.

  8. Kwame Richardson Says:

Wish him well and thanks for the effort.

  9. adam from ny Says:

so how exactly does this work???

    he’s not really hurt…

what…they call him in the office and say:

“look chris that was one of the most embarrassing plays of the year for 2018 in the entire nfl…you are officially a joke now and we are gonna cut you…do you want to go on injured reserve and leave more subtly and respectably, because you are done here and will never wear a bucs uni again”

  10. Afrika The Rapper Says:

Wishing him well in his future endeavors.

  11. unbelievable Says:

Well he certainly can’t show his face in a Bucs uniform after getting b!tvhed up like that last night.

    Good riddance Conte!

  12. Slugglife Says:

Sad showing here today. Guy gets injured and so called fans heckle him.

And I always tell people we ain’t like Philly fans. Don’t like the guy or his play, fine. No need to be dicks about it. When Grimes mother showed up here to stand up for her son, you key board warriors all bitched up.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jordan Whitehead is not better than Conte. Yet. But he was going to replace him eventually, and Jordan Whitehead has more upside in the long run.

He should advance quickly now. Just like our rookie CBs.

    Next up? Vita Vea!

  14. JWil8027 Says:

    What about Beckwith?

  15. Bucko40 Says:

This is a typical Bucs. They have a horrible history of evaluating their own talent. They’ve kept Conte for years and have let other more talented players go. Bradley McDougle. Conte is a serviceable back up bit Derwin James was available. He’s playing lights out ball for the Chargers. Maybe Vea works out in the long run but the 2018 draft class isn’t looking promising right now.

  16. AlteredEgo Says:

Here comes https://www.buccaneers.com/team/players-roster/godwin-igwebuike/. Or a trade for the Seahawks safety

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Come on “fans”……do you really want to celebrate one of our players hitting the IR….You have a right to your opinions on his on-field play….but injury is not something to rejoice about.

  18. Robert Says:

This will drive him for years

Doesn’t mean he won’t kick ass at something else

  19. Skipper Says:

    Stewart and Davis look good.

  20. K_Bassuka Says:

Hallelujah! Finaly the prayers were answered. Good luck for Mr. Conte on his new career since no other team will sign him even though he is an amazing player, best wishes for him and his family.

  21. Not there yet Says:

This may have the Doug Martin affect on the defense, addition by subtraction

  22. admin Says:

    What about Beckwith?

    What about him?

  23. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I will say this about our safety depth. Isaiah Johnson did a great job of staying for deeper than the deepest and sure seems to track the ball well in the air. He would have made a heck of a play on a Canadian football field.

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

I feel bad for him, not really his fault that he sucks. He got bi+ch slapped right onto IR by that big tight end. He won’t be missed though.

  25. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Some of us think we may have seen the last of Chris Conte in Tampa.

  26. Wesley Says:

    This is a good thing.

  27. Anonymous Says:

The crazy thing is that I swear that McDonald did the same exact thing to Conte on his prior reception (i.e., laid out Conte with a stiff arm).

  28. Wesley Says:

Hey Joe where has Beckwith been i’ve completely forgotten about him, also did Spence even play last night?

  29. Frank Pillow Says:

Isaiah Johnson’s Willy Mays Hayes impression was really special. Topped only by Smitty’s call o the Conte 3rd down and the humiliating face-shot
    Chris took.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

He hurt his kitty when he got shoved to the ground like a girl.

  31. Geno Says:

    Lot’s of nastiness

  32. Kalind Says:

I don’t like hearing guys got hurt. That stinks. But thank the football gods for this gift. Conte’s “tackle” attempt was the dumbest play of the year by anyone. I mean, everything about it was stupid

  33. SOEbuc Says:

    Bonzai

“Jordan Whitehead is not better than Conte.”

I can sure as hell tell you Whitehead would’ve gone low on that tackle and not try to make a vertical tackle on a 260 lb guy running with momentum.

Whithead is already better than Conte because he has better tackling abilities.

  34. AfroBuc Says:

Keith Tandy is a veteran that knows the defense. We need some depth.

  35. Sumo Says:

    You guys are pathetic.

  36. JabooBuc Says:

I love how people on this site question the toughness of these players when you can bet your life they would never say it in front of them. All you keyboard warriors are embarrassing.

  37. D the Bucs fan Says:

Im mad we lost but conte got two pieced to the ir man. I don’t how he will ever recover from the embarrassment. Lol he almost threw him to the bench. Conte went flying like he got knocked out on street fighter. Lol Damn!

  38. Buchead5588 Says:

Kieth Tandy signed with the Falcons

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

Agree 100% with yas here JabooBuc. In the heat of the game Conte got posterized. It can happen to anybody. Now watch him come back and be the better player for it.

  40. Destinjohnny Says:

Think we made a mistake not taking Derwin?
This is a deep deep d line class and we did sign 4 lineman in the off season

  41. bucanation Says:

wow he went weak and got what he deserved I would gladly see him gone

  42. bucanation Says:

I don’t dislike the guy just he never makes a play he allways shows up when the action is over

  43. Matts17 Says:

    Classic addition by subtraction.

  44. bucanation Says:

wonder if jones will ever play I have a bad feeling about what a game like that can do to a fragile team like the bucs

  45. Phillip Says:

Do you guys even watch the game? He was back out there on the next series after that embarrassing play and got hurt then. This is coming from someone who thought he was always an average NFL player… at best.

90% of the people on here just like to here themselves talk I think.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

    Seeya.

  47. Buc_The_World Says:

He doesn’t need to be on IR, he needs to be on a bus out of town.

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

2019 NFL Draft QB Stock Watch: Safeties
    • Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama
    • Taylor Rapp, S, Washington

  49. Ryan McGregor Says:

We just signed S Andrew Adams

  50. Phillybuc Says:

Sad for his career to end with that play embedded on all the highlight reels. Bad technique on a much bigger man. Tough guy made a lot of tackles but also trailed most he was covering

  51. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Cont.
    • Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi St. [ ← Justin Evans Clone ]

  52. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Per Greg Auman – “Bucs have signed former Giants safety Andrew Adams to their 53-man roster.”

  53. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    K’Von Wallace, S, Clemson

  54. Kobe Faker Says:

“A lot of jealous couch potatoes because Chris Conte is a good looking guy and probably does very well with the ladies…

Kobe Faker has been complimented countless times that I look exactly like Chris Conte naked”

    Kobe Faker

  55. mark2001 Says:

Good luck Chris. After getting manhandled by that TE last night, I’d imagine it will be tough to get back on the proverbial horse.

  56. BigMacAttack Says:

Conte should have just hopped on his back and rode him for 8 seconds.

  57. brooks55hof Says:

    @ Buc believer
    That’s just too damn funny

  58. THETRUTH Says:

Conte gave all he had for this team , and people forget he closed out 2 games for us 2 years ago to get to 9-7.

Last time I check dont see any of you badgers trying to tackle anyone but your Doritos on the couch.

Be respectful to the man , I didn’t think he was great but he didn’t give up on OUR BUCS. He actually had a few TD saving tackles from blown coverage on our CB.

GOOD LUCK CONTE MAND MUCH BLESSINGS

  59. Ryan McGregor Says:

    THETRUTH

Well said…. except for the part bashing the fans. We also don’t get paid millions upon millions of dollars to play football.

  60. Mike in LOL Says:

I wish him the best, whether he suits up here again or not.

Though I’m leaning toward the idea that he won’t. Like joe said, last year on contract and Evans and Whitehead are being groomed up well.

Though I’ve never been pleased with his performance, I can’t say the man didn’t work his butt off many years with us, so hats off to you Conte!

  61. BucTrooper Says:

Conte is our? Who is going to trail big plays now?

  62. Rod Munch Says:

They let Tandy go to keep this no talent hack who single handedly loses games. Ugh.

  63. Cometowin Says:

Conte broke his peanut. Time to step up Jordan.

    Go Bucs!!!

  64. Hawaii Buccaneers fan Says:

What’s the name of that safety in Seattle that wants out????

  65. Gene Deckerhoff is my hero Says:

What a bad way for Conte to go out and see his pro career end. Football fans can be cruel, but, damn, at least Conte Hate is over and some Bucs fans can fully focus on Jameis Hate…

  66. stvcl Says:

Well maybe a team that really sucks at safety will pick you up next year. It’s been real and it’s been nice but I can’t say it was real nice. Cya!

  67. Tampaspicer Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  68. bucy Says:

This is the greatest news of 2018, now if only we can get Mike Smith on IR…. : P

  69. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Get his soft a$ out of here!

  70. The Buc Realist Says:

Is he done???? YES!!!!! He turns 30 before next season and like the “real” fans have said for a very long time, If Conte is your starter????? Then you have roster problems!!!!!!!!!! Its funny how the local media has tried to tell us how good he is!!!!!!! They say how he “won” a game with an INT from year ago!!!!!!! The guy has 8 season in the league and we still see the bad angles and rookie mistakes!!!!!!!!!!

The Real fans have known this was a problem from long ago!!!!!!! OMG ITS THE “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The Buc Realist Says:
    March 12th, 2017 at 7:15 am
I think he has only played one 16 game season and he is going into his 7th season!!! And he does have a good game, but then he will have 2 or 3 bad games!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  71. Bucsfanman Says:

    You guys suck as fans!
Was Conte the best safety in the NFL? Nobody ever confused such a statement! Yet, year after year, all he did was beat out every other safety they brought in and produced.
It’s a shame that play. I watched the SAME EXACT THING happen to Earl Thomas on Sunday against the Cowboys. THAT should’ve been the play to re-run again and again. Until Monday, of course!
Get well Chris! Brush yourself off and get back out there.

  72. Ian Says:

…and Eric Reid is still available. *smh*

  73. Buc407 Says:

Thank god Conte is by far my least favorite buc Been way past due to get him off the field

  74. Owlykat Says:

Andrew Adams was an undrafted free agent in 2016. However when NY Giant’s starting Safety, Thompson, .was out for awhile, Adam’s filled in admirably and has now been trained to play both Safety positions by the Giants. I am sure our scouts watched all the Preseason Games to see who played best at all positions so Licht could move quickly to get us a player if we needed one so that just paid off for them.

  75. nate s Says:

what about how sorry brent grimes played!

  76. Owlykat Says:

To me he was rusty coming back from injury. That is a good reason why we should not rush Jameis back until we know he has worked off his rust first.
