Fitz Greasing Monken For New Job?

September 18th, 2018

Building resume.

Bucs backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick suddenly turning into Dan Marino is great for the Bucs in the win column, but could be disastrous for the Bucs in the long term.

Never mind the ramifications Fitz’s magic may have on the long-term future of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. It could mean the Tampa end of a bright coach.

Chris Wesseling of NFL.com noted that already in college Monken is seen as a very good coach. On the NFL level he’s still somewhat unknown outside coaching circles. That may be changing.

With the offense humming like a new jet engine, the result could be Monken leaving the Bucs for a head coaching gig in the NFL, Wessling typed.

The Bucs’ offensive explosion through two weeks has coincided with offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s promotion to play-caller, taking the reigns from head coach Dirk Koetter. If Fitzpatrick’s aerial attack keeps blowing other teams out of the building, it won’t be long before Monken is touted as not just the next offensive mastermind but also a trendy head-coaching candidate.

Everywhere Monken has gone he has seen success, on both the NFL level and college. Monken was once a grad assistant for Lou Holtz at Notre Dame. He was Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator when the Cowboys, with Brandon Weeden, beat Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl. Monken was the passing game coordinator at LSU working under Les Miles and Jimbo Fisher. And he took over a winless Southern Miss program and in three years had the school in a bowl game.

Monken is a damn good coach. Joe would hate to see the guy go. But if he did, that means the Bucs offense is lighting up the scoreboard and likely winning games.

Whoever may be at quarterback.

Jesus Christ. Can we get a aleast a quarter into the season before we start giving people headcoaching jobs?

  2. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is ultimately a good thing for any truly successful organization.

When other folks want your folks it means you’ve been successful it also marks your organization as a great place to work to advance your career thereby giving you a larger pool of available candidates who would want to come and work for you.

  3. '79Defense Says:

Man, it’s been two games. Let’s let him get at least a half season with results before he’s the next hottest thing in the NFL.

  4. XpfcWintergreen2 Says:

Way back at the beginning of the preseason Koetter announced that he was going to let Monken call the plays. He said that he had promised him the opportunity. I took from what else he said at the time that he felt that he owed it to Todd and was keeping his promise.

The hidden implication always was that if things went very well then Koetter would be risking losing his OC in a year, or two or three. That is the nature of the NFL

Hmm I wonder if anyone would be crazy enough to give us a first or second rounder for The Magic Man.
Just had that random thought earlier and thought maybe Alex smith goes down or Cousins and they come calling desperate for ol Fitzy.
Maybe Gruden thinks Fitz is the greatest thing since sliced bread and would be perfect for the spider 2 Y banana.

  6. Slugglife Says:

If we go 4-12 we probably lose coaches too.

  7. Slugglife Says:

I prefer the winning. Worry about that sht later.

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

But hey, at least we will be able to keep Smitty…;)

  9. Defense Rules Says:

XpfcWintergreen2, that’s hilarious … loved it (Rupp had a lot of great one-liners like that BTW, like “Your defense will save you on those nights when your offense isn’t working”). And Joe, enjoy the ride … don’t turn into a Debbie Downer. If I were a HC, I’d much rather have assistant coaches working for me who everyone wanted than those who nobody wanted (for obvious reasons I hope). Same way with the players … win the Super Bowl and everyone wants your key players. And that’s a very good thing.

    The Dirk Koetter coaching tree?

  11. JA Says:

After two weeks, we are 31st in team defense—only better than Kansas City. We’ve scored 75 points and have surrendered 61. If we can’t start slowing down the opponent’s offense, Monken will be under pressure to put up 40 points a week. So far, so good. But eventually, we’re going to have to get some stops if we’re going to sniff a playoff game. Is there anybody here, morons included, that doesn’t think the Steelers will score 30+ next Monday night?

  12. Darin Says:

    Ja
Think theres anyone in Pit who doesnt think the bucs will score at least 31? The team who just gave up 38 at home. I dont care how many points they give up if they win. Not sure why so many are critiquing wins. Thats the name of the game. I could care less if its 6-3 or 38-35. Wont find me questioning a team that is winning. Hard to win in that league. Ive been around long enough to know that.

  13. SteveK Says:

    Keep winning games, Bucs!

Let’s do this. Fitz/Monken are dialing up the points!

  14. SteveK Says:

Preach, Darin, just give me a “W”.

  15. Silverbuc Says:

If the Bucs beat the Steelers on Monday night, in convincing fashion, guess who becomes the trendy pick of Pittsburgh to be the next head coach? Monken will go to Pitt, and he’ll take Jameis with him. And probably Marpet or D. Smith as free agents. Maybe even Kwon. But that’s all good because Fitzmagic!! Oh and have fun trying to sign Fitzpatrick in the off-season while he holds out for top 5 QB money.

  16. JA Says:

Darin— I’m with ya on critiquing wins. I couldn’t be happier with our start. That said, sitting on the edge of your seat, knowing the outcome is still in doubt with second half leads of 24 and 20 is a little hard on the “please don’t blow it” psyche of a lifelong Bucs fan. A good defense= less chance of a myocardial infarction.

  17. John B Says:

It’s clear to see when Monken is calling plays at will and when Dirk reigns him in once we get a double digit lead – has happened back to back weeks – I say juststomp on the gas for 60 minutes and the D can be 31st in the league we will still win 10+ games

    Until
We get healthy on D, we have to win the shoot out

  18. JabooBuc Says:

I’m sure he’s doing a good job calling plays but it sure as hell helps to have Mike Evans, DJax, Godwin, OJ, Brate and Humphries. So much of play calling is overrated. It’s 80% talent and execution and 20% play calling.

  19. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Slugglife well stated…..well the bucs defense is still one of the worst in the nfl so I am guessing if we lose an OC we going to get a DC too, the steelers offensively are going to eat the bucs up this week, hope that the OC and Fitzmagic can hang 40 this week again against the porous steeler defense…..and that bears defense will be the best the bucs face the first half of the schedule

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Win or lose, we’re going to lose coaching staff. If we win, they get offered new jobs with promotions. If we lose, they get fired.

    The way of the NFL.

  21. BurgDweller Says:

Can we please enjoy some early success before we start thinking about the depletion our coaching staff? Unbelievable. An article like this shouldn’t be written until after the season is done. and it was a winning season at that. We don’t even know if that will be the case yet.

  22. jjbucfan Says:

What this truly shows is how bad of a play caller Dirk Koetter was last year. It is very difficult to be the head coach and OC. Only a few guys have ever been able to do it. Fitz is on fire and a lot of it is unpredictable play calling, a lot is way better pass protection and a lot is better defensive play. People are so stupid, Fitz has been on 7 teams in 14 years for a reason. I would love for him to continue this play and be the league MVP ala Rich Gannon, but you still keep Winston and groom him. Rodgers didn’t play a game until he was 26 I believe. As someone said earlier, maybe Gruden gets a hard-on for Fitz to run his offense and gives up one of those first rounders for him. That would be irony at its finest.

  23. Rick Says:

At lease the Bucs defense made some progress. Not in keeping people out of the end zone. (Obviously) The Bucs might have another shootout coming up.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not a disaster, Joe….a blessing to have a good coach…would rather win and lose a coach than lose and fire a coach.

  25. XpfcWintergreen2 Says:

    Ha! 😆

Love your last suggestion Alaskan Abdominal Snowman!

  26. Gambelero Says:

I don’t think it’ll be a Lovie to Koetter reprise. He’s calling Koetter designed plays in a Koetter choreographed offense. Even someone as stubborn as Koetter can see that airing it out and using the receiver/QB weapons is better than pigheadedly giving up possessions trying to “balance” the offense with run, run, pray.

  27. 813bucboi Says:

so dirk may lose his OC and DC if we keep winning…..

    #TUNNELVISION!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  28. Orlampa Turd Says:

Maybe the Glazers will fire Dirk and promote Monken. Seems like a Glazer move.

  29. orlbucfan Says:

So, if the Offense fully blossoms and explodes, we lose the Monk man? DK will simply replace him and give another capable guy a chance.

    Amen!

    🙂

Well, he did trade a fifth-round pick for A.J. McCarron.

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

No wonder Monken calls plays from up in the air conditioned box like Smith. They both can’t take the heat.

  32. jmarkbuc Says:

Love what’s happening with the Bucs so far.

The Defense and run game have got to get shored up pretty quick though/ I don’t wanna be ranked 31st.

Pittsburgh game is huge! Get a load of that Bears D.. that’s going to be a huge task.

Anybody know what our injury situation on Defense is?

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Orlampa Turd – yeah, and the Glazers can repeat the Dirk years all over by taking a successful OC (assuming this keeps up) and make him the HC, then he’ll have much less time to work with the offense and game plan the offense, and the offense will then go down the drain as he can no longer see the full field from the booth and stops being able to spend 100% of his game day focused on playcalling.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

Gruden had Monte here to run the defense and he literally didn’t have to do anything to have a, most years, a top 5 defense (or better) other than stay out of the way.

  35. Kobe Faker Says:

“People here dont take Kobe serious sometimes but few here knows that Im actually connected within ! Buc place…

It wasnt Koetters decision to let Monken call the plays”
