Buccaneers Have NFL’s 11th-Oldest Roster

September 2nd, 2018

Jason Pierre-Paul, 29, talks to fellow Bucs newcomer Beau Allen, who turns 27 in November.

Your Buccaneers didn’t have a young team last year and they don’t have one this year.

In fact, it’s highly likely the Bucs won’t have a rookie in the starting lineup on Sunday.

Rosters around the NFL will change this week as team sift through recently-released players. But as of now, members of the Bucs’ 53-man roster have an average age of 26.1 years, per the annual Philly Voice compilation. That’s the 11th-oldest roster in the NFL.

Chucky’s Raiders get the official “oldest” label at 27.4, which is an extremely high number.

Last year at this time, the Bucs were at 26.2 years for an average age, 12th oldest in the NFL before they got a little older signing safety T.J. Ward as a free agent. Ward is currently is out of football.

Youth sure won’t be an excuse or hindrance for this year’s Bucs.

For those wondering, three of the five oldest teams to start the 2017 season made the playoffs: Bills, Saints and Panthers.

Not a big deal. The core group is very young. Fitzpatrick, Dotson, DeSean Jackson, and many of the older players already have their replacements on the roster and are on their way out. Our DL is a bit older and should be an area of focus every year for the draft.

  2. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

11th oldest roster. 33rd roster in nfl talent

  3. AJ Says:

Chucky is picking up right where in left off. Above average as a coach. But well below average as a personnel man. Bucs had no depth and a screwed up salary cap when in left.

  5. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Take away Fitzpatrick, Djax, and Dotson and I bet we are a whole lot younger on average.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

SwiftBuc … Add Brent Grimes to that group & they probably come close to addind a year to our average age.

  7. LakeLand Says:

    A bunch of old bums

Look what showed up.Streight from the school of doom and gloom. Must be related to rain.

  9. Tom S. Says:

So you’re saying that if we only subtract our four oldest players we get younger? Wow guy, really killing it today. I’m sure the other teams wish their fans had such…creativity and they could subtract their own 4 oldest players 😂

  10. NewTampaChris Says:

Koetter and Licht don’t have the luxury of going young. If they don’t win at least 7 games this year, they both have to be gone.

  11. Godeep66 Says:

Hmmmmmm. Could I have been possibly correct that the word is on the street that Tampa Bay is an easy spot to land, for a veteran, to pick up some easy cake??? Weak GM and terrible head coach that looks the other way.

  12. Broy34 Says:

Hey Lakeland and maxi pad showing up miserable on a nice Sunday in September. Man how it must suck to be that miserable in life

Nah, Not extremely high, I’d say about right for a Chucky team.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

11th oldest doesn’t sound bad at all if not good. Still young men being players in their prime. No rookies? CD3 isn’t starting #2 (if it’s VH3 at #2, who’s in the nickel?). VH3 looked spectacular playing nickel and that’s the position he needs to be playing.

  15. Ndog Says:

Dang yall some miserable mother f#ckers.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

    WHITEHEAD START WEEK ONE!!!

WHY CAN’T THEY SEE THE TRUTH THAT HE’S SO MUCH BETTER THAN CONTE? AND DON’T GIVE ME ANY ROOKIE SAFETY BS.

    JBF Article “10 big questions”-9/2/2018

“*If Vernon Hargreaves starts at cornerback and moves to nickel when appropriate, then who is the next cornerback up? Ryan Smith? One of the rookies?”

    Ryan Smith? F#######CK NO!!!!!!

  18. Tom S. Says:

Funny, when someone criticizes Ryan Smith, Doug Martin, Chris Conte or Vernon Hargreaves people don’t seem to call those poster “miserable”, because that’s more palatable to some fans. But take a shot at the historically incompetent roster management and then all of the sudden those that point things such a a dumb GM’s 22-42 record must be miserable or misanthropic.

No, dear readers, some of you are just ignorant, blindly optimistic or unable to accept realities that don’t “feel good.” Special fans should grab your safety blanket, suck your thumbs and hope in a week that this magic schoolbus of a roster prevails in making the playoffs for the first time in Lichts tenure. If not, you’ll look even dumber a year from now asking for another Meathead extension than you do today praising management that has the second longest playoff drought in a 32 team league.

  19. Eric Says:

Meaningless stat. Doesn’t break down starters vs. back ups.

One could easily have a really old kicker and skew the thing. Especially if one views 26 vs 27 as “huge”.

Just playing Jameis at Qb vs Ryan would make a difference in starting 11.

  20. Doctor Stroud Says:

Who could the Bucs trade for two first round picks?

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So we’re in the average range. 11th really isn’t that bad. We were much worse last year weren’t we?

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I have to agree with those who say it is meaningless. I would understand if we were top three oldest and did not have good young talent as backups, but this team is built for long term success now. We have veterans who are bridge players until the young players are ready.

All of the free agents, except our new kicker, carry no guarantees past this year (JPP was not a free agent).

While the Defensive Line needs a couple young studs, we do have it stacked for the next few years. Licht needs to start thinking about the heir to GMC soon, and whoever will replace JPP i three years. Get them in the next draft and give them a little time to develop, make them work to earn starting roles.

That’s a luxury we have not had in over 10 years, and Allen/Dominick did not make use of it back then. Licht is the best GM in Bucs history, so hopefully he will.

“Who could the Bucs trade for two first round picks? “E

No one right now. If GMC hits 11-12 sacks, he MIGHT next year.

Jackson might get us a third.

If Fitz goes down and Griffen wins his games he might gain trade value. They ats have turned backups into trades for first round picks. If Griff does win and if the Bucs do well this year, he’ll gain value.

I’m not saying he is nearly as good but something about Griff reminds me of Tom Brady. Not sure what it is. At 29, it would seem he’s past his prime, but he’s ne er thrown a pass in the reg season. For all we know, things might click for him.

Might. I’m not really expecting that to happen though.
