Ryan Griffin’s Sudden Rise

August 31st, 2018

Impressed coaches.

The thing that scares Bucs fans about backup quarterback Ryan Griffin is he has yet to take a snap in an NFL regular season game.

So if fellow backup Ryan Fitzpatrick gets hurt in the first three games when America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, serves his three-game sentence ordered by NFL strongman Roger Goodell, then the Bucs are stuck with a guy with no experience.

That nearly changed last year. Remember when Jameis blew out his shoulder and had to leave the Arizona game, and later sit out three games? Well, had a twist of fate happened differently, it would have been Griffin replacing Jameis and not Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Griffin was hurt last preseason against the Bengals and was placed on injured reserve. If not for that season-ending shoulder injury, Bucs general manager Jason Licht suggested Griffin was penciled in as Jameis’ backup.

Licht last night appeared in the broadcast booth to talk all things Bucs during the WFLA-TV Channel 8 telecast. There, while praising Griffin, the old Bucs color analyst Ronde Barber the team has a great deal of confidence in Griffin dating back to last summer.

“You know, last year before the Bengals game, it actually looked like [Griffin] was going to win the No. 2 job,” Licht said. “He was throwing the ball really well.”

Joe does know Fitzpatrick had an awful 2017 training camp, so Joe doesn’t think Licht was trying to pull off a snowjob in the broadcast.

Joe vividly remembers when a former NFL quarterback attended a Bucs training camp practice last year and, while watching the quarterbacks, he turned to Joe and said, “[Joe], Fitzpatrick looks terrible.”

However, since Koetter already announced Fitzpatrick will start in place of Jameis, it’s safe to assume Griffin is the No. 3 quarterback, barring injuries to Fitzpatrick or Jameis.

if all works out with jameis moving forward (only time will tell)…griffin has seemingly been groomed as the back up qb of the future, to comfortably play behind jaboo for years to come…the way teams used to groom starters in the past is how we’ve groomed grif to be a quality long term 2nd string qb…hopefully it works out – as the beard will probably not be here much longer anyway…

ps when that beard is in full bloom – like now…that’s a pretty impressive noggin…quite presidential or mount rushmore-ish

grif actually looks like an nfl quarterback…

that 4th string kid out there last night just doesn’t look like an nfl qb no matter how you slice it

  3. firethecannons Says:

no more of Austin Allen–he has singlehandedly lost our last 2 preseason games and it has been almost impossible to watch the game as the remote is constantly on the verge of getting spiked

  4. BucEmUp Says:

Koetter also announced that Monken would not be calling plays in the regular season. Let’s see if that holds

  5. D-Rome Says:

Griffin will thrive as a starter one day.

  6. Not there yet Says:

Griffin never had a chance of starting over Fitz, what person with common sense parts a veteran to sit just to play an unknown guy with zero regular game experience but I guess news can be made to tell any lie you want to believe.

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

Yeah, I mean Griffin will get his shot eventually. He’s looked pretty good in preseason.

  8. Kev-O Says:

Fitz will not be back next year. The have invested enough in Griff to develop him and make him no. 2.

  9. TonyC Says:

I’m not sure he couldn’t step in and start. Think of all these rookie qbs who start in their first year. This guy has been in the league 5 years with the Buck and Atlanta. I believe he could step in game one and do fine. He’s efficient, accurate and his arm strength has improved. He also seems to be a good decision maker.

In midseason form already cannons? 🙂

    Bucs (correction) ^^^

I don’t know why, but the whole Ryan Griffin thing reminds me of when Bledsoe got injured and the unknown Tom Brady stepped in. I think that if the Pats had a better option, they would have gone with someone else that first game. Imagine that.

I don’t think Ryan Griffin is Tom Brady, but he certainly is an unknown. If he has to play and looks spectacular, he’ll gain trade value.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

TonyC, he almost threw two picks against backups last night. He’s not a good decision maker.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Interesting tidbit: Roberto Aguayo made all of his kicks for the Charges this preseason.

  15. Wausa Says:

Griffen has looked very good but there were two passes last night he was fortunate were not intercepted.

All three of the Bucs QB’s have looked great this preseason.

If Fitz can pull of two wins in the first three games the Bucs should have a great season.

  16. Godeep66 Says:

Griffin has a nice gig and being paid pretty well for a third string QB. Let’s hope Fitzpatrick can stay healthy so we won’t need to see RGriffen play in a game of any significance. The poor health of the OLine may indeed result in Griffin getting some playing time early in the season.

  17. Godeep66 Says:

We should also pick up RG3 if the Ravens cut him on Saturday

    griffin looked good last night….

maybe we can package Ryan Griffin with RoJo, and Spence to the Raiders for DE Khalil Mack

I know exactly why this reminds you of that situation…. YOU ARE COMPLETELY FREAKING DELUSIONAL….

Bucs have 1 good season in 42 and brady owns as many Superbowl rings as derrick brooks and company have play off wins. you are comparing bucs to patriots… delusional…. they baker act people for less….

only a dumbarse would mention Brady, patriots, and bucs in the same sentence. one is the definition of a winner and, the other is the pure definition of embarrassing losers. you can be a fan and still live in reality. bucs suck. your delusional optimism does not make you a better fan than the realists who only accpet winning on the field and not excuses.
