What Is Jason Licht To Do?

June 23rd, 2018

Weighing options?

Could the Bucs be thinking of life without America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston permanently?

It is one option some fans are now urging the Bucs to do. But it would be damn hard to part ways with the best quarterback the franchise has ever had before the guy is 25-years old.

However, former NFL suit and current BSPN talking head, the reasoned Louis Riddick, is of the mind that is exactly what Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is doing: pondering life without Jameis on his roster — for good.

Riddick explains in the BSPN video below.

  1. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I read a comment on another bucs site that really stuck in my head and that I agree with 100%

It said “winning will make a lot of sins go away as the Steelers can tell you.”

    But any cushion is gone.

This puts Licht directly on the hot seat.

There was some discussion of 8-8 saving this regime’s jobs, but Jameis put that out of the question.

If we don’t make the playoffs, both Koetter and Licht will be gone.

  2. Blue-footed booby Says:

If I was Jason Licht, I would resign immediately in shame for passing up on Marcus Mariota in favor of a guy with a litany of off-field issues prior to the 2015 draft.

But since we know that’s not happening, the next best thing would be to fire Jameis Winston and either trade for Nick Foles or ride out the season with Ryan Fitzpatrick and reevaluate the QB position come next spring, when his likely successor can make the responsible decision when determining what to do at the NFL’s most important position.

  3. Buc407 Says:

Keep Jamie’s. This ain’t Boy Scouts. Who cares

  4. ShutTheBucUp Says:

It is during these dark times, when all the haters start emerging from their caves with their pitchforks and torches, that I truly miss NOSBOS. He was my favorite poster on here and a constant voice of reason. Definitely missing the bro.

  5. SteelStudBuc Says:

    Nice picture of Licht.
The face he’s making is one guys accused of sexual offences make. If u can find one like that of Jameis Weinstein I will laugh my butt off.

  6. Pryda... sec147 Says:

Man such a tough time we live in who knows how this girl behaved in the car females are bitches too they throw mixed signals and nobody knows what happened I believe Jameis is innocent until proven guilty. And even if he did rest his hand on her crotch for 3-5 secs he took his hand off! Plus he was young. The man has grown up so much year to year he has a family of his own now. I like to give Jameis another chance to make it up

  7. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

If they cut Jameis I’m gone as well as a season ticket holder. This whole thing has gotten way out of control. Thanks again to our dumb arse fans who just want to run everybody out of town over allegations. I’m starting to think our fans have been a big reason this team has been in the dumps for a long time. Most who are complaining probably don’t even follow the Bucs just trolls trying to ruin a good thing for others. Social media is going to be the end to all good things.

  8. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

No such thing as forgiveness anymore. What is wrong with people?

  9. Anonymous Says:

If the bucs take a rookie QB in the next draft he would be in a better position to succeed than Jameis was when he was drafted.

  10. Larry Says:

Tony Dungy once said, “Never take talent over character”. Winston has talent but NO CHARACTER!!! Jameis Winston was a cancer on Florida State and continues to be a cancer on the Bucs and the NFL. A zebra can’t change their stripes. Jameis Winston CANNOT change the fact that he has absolutely no respect for women and he never will. He needs to go!!!

  11. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I am amazed we are even discussing dropping Jameis over an ALLEGATION. Show me the proof and I will believe it. Since when is everyone judge, jury, and executioner?

Jameis has been the hardest working player on this team since he got here. As well as a huge contributor to the community.
He has numerous NFL records and Buccaneer records, as well as a pro bowl at 24.

He has obviously settled down and matured the last few years since this happened. He’s engaged and having a child but everyone wants to paint him the devil.

So lets just abandon him without evidence? What message does that send to the teammates who have his back?

Barring evidence or a successful trial against Winston I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. If the Bucs dump him it would be such a Buc move! We like to not sign future super bowl players to second contracts.

  12. eightonetree Says:

idk licht made had no chance but to take jameis. the talk around Oregon at that time was the marcus mariota wanted nothing to do with the bucs……..

  13. GreG Says:

Wow the sh*t hit the fan

  14. Mike Evans Goat Says:

He isn’t convicted of anything. If the NFL had solid info on this he would have gotten the LEAGUE STANDARD 6 game minimum suspension.
Let’s all remember this is based on the word of a convicted R Apist serving a 15year prison sentence

  15. Eric Says:

Funny how people will abandon the team if they cut a piece of crap human yet totally dismiss how much of a disgrace he is to our franchise. How about this…. If the Bucs dont cut Winston I’m done with the Bucs! No player is worth my integrity. I have a daughter and if he touched my little girl I’d kill his a$$ in a second! Enough is enough already! People have been numbed by our POTUS so they think every horrible action is defenseable. What’s happening to our society?
    #dumpwinston

  16. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

So should Payton Manning have been thrown to the curb for sitting on a woman’s face in college? With this jury he would have been terminated before his hall of fame career even started. People learn to know your role in society.

  17. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

For the record, Ben Roethlesberger’s crime was worse than Winston’s and they kept him and it eventually blew over…

  18. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Eric I have a little girl as well and would do the same but again you are missing the whole point he has not been convicted of anything yet. And your allegations of him being a disgrace to the franchise you act like he has done something else wrong since being here. Or are you also hurt by him eating W’s? What if a female made an allegation about you and their was no proof should your employer fire you just because of what she said? That son is idiotic. Plus I hope all of you do leave when we keep Jameis so we can keep the true fans around. Most of you I have never seen on here anyways. You all are just social media trolls.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

I thought I’d seen it all from this fan base over the last 40 years. NOPE

Never in my life have I seen so much negative over-reaction regarding a football player’s alleged involvement in a non-criminal matter.

Over-reaction isn’t even the right description – its more like a mass FREAK OUT

No wonder Joe calls Winston America’s Quarterback.

The majority posting comments the last 2 days – especially today have literally lost all semblance of reasonable perspective on this matter. And not in a good way.

Realize this. Winston is the Buccaneers Quarterback. PERIOD.

Jameis is NOT going anywhere. He will be the Bucs QB for at least a dozen more years. Maybe 15 more years.

Those of you (trolls and known haters aside) who are lambasting Jameis Winston’s character because of this and saying “That’s it. I’m done with him. He should be off the team” – are going to feel fairly foolish a couple or few years from now if you think back on this particular moment in time while you are cheering as loud as everyone else watching Jameis lead this team to victory in an NFC Championship and/or Super Bowl game…

  20. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

If my girl told me she had been violated I would be working tirelessly to see that man brought to justice.
    Where is the lawsuit?

I will NOT convict another human being without proof. Who the check are you people to convict.him? Do you want this to be true? I don’t. I don’t want to lose the best QB we have had before he even comes into his prime. Not. Without. Proof.

Sorry for the triple post. None of them showed up until 5 minutes after I tried posting them.

Have noticed some others seeming to have the same issue lately Joe. Feel free to remove 2 of those 3 if you wish Joe. I would if I could – but you haven’t made me a moderator – yet….

  24. Pa Privateer Says:

I have yet to hear any actual evidence, and there were no actual police charges against Winston either.

I don’t like hearing about people groping others without permission, but I am not about to be so stupid as to cry for Winston to be cut.

  25. Bengay Says:

Kate did come out and say it to buzzfeed, which is the most certinantly not credible when it comes to talking about men, they hate them just look at the rot man spreading video

  26. Marc Says:

    Pa Privateer:

Winston lied. He initially said he wasn’t alone …. fast forward to this week and MULTIPLE reports are now surfacing saying that he was alone during that ride. Now why would an innocent man, not only lie, but ask others to lie for him? For me that pretty much ends all the excuse making I’ve been doing for Winston over the years.

Not only that, but his crap lifestyle just cost us the 2018 season. Make no mistake, we will go 0-3 with Fitzpatrick as our starter.

  27. Onetrickpony Says:

    Thanks for nothing, Winston.
Your disturbing actions speak loud enough for me to scrutinize everthing twice, that you might say , going forward.

  28. Pete I Says:

Winston’s win loss record and seeming inability to get better on the field, accuracy, turnovers should be concern enough about the future. Adding in character issues is simply another unfortunate layer.

And according to the Joe’s “best quarterback the franchise has ever had”. Well hopefully some day the #3 on his jersey won’t stand for the number of turnovers per game. I guess we should be grateful he didn’t keep the #5 from FSU. A very discouraging start to the season.

  29. RODNEY Says:

How is it we’ve heard nothing n all of a sudden all of this “information” is coming out of the wood work. I’m on buying into everything or freaking out calling for winston’s head or defending till this is all said and done.

  30. mog2010 Says:

A real problem i have with this whole carry on is that i assume the Nfl sanctioned this leak. Mr Godell wants to hold his players to the highest order and i understand this but as this leak is not official, the Glazers, Licht and the front office as well as Koetter and the Bucs players have no grounds to reply.
Godell has created a vacuum of misinformation, downright hatred and basically a civil war amongst Bucs fans.
You want to hold players accountable Mr Godell ? start with your own house and stop the leaks, make the outcome official and give those involved some clarity and the right to defend themselves.
Whatever the outcome, i still believe we can go to the aints and kick their arses

  31. Defense Rules Says:

@Pickgrin … “Realize this. Winston is the Buccaneers Quarterback. PERIOD. Jameis is NOT going anywhere. He will be the Bucs QB for at least a dozen more years. Maybe 15 more years.” One week ago I would have agreed with that Pickgrin. Right now? Not so sure.

What the ‘fan base’ thinks & how it perceives Jameis as a person is important, but not as important as how the Glazers, Licht & Koetter perceive Jameis. Did he flat out lie to them? Can they trust him? Do they want to allow Jameis to be the face of the Bucs moving forward? Tough questions. I don’t know the answer to any of them … but they do. And those answers (and their perceptions of Jameis) will determine his fate with the Bucs IMO. To Jameis’ benefit, Bucs’ management doesn’t need to make any ‘final’ decisions for 1-2 years. And they probably won’t.

@Marc … “Not only that, but his crap lifestyle just cost us the 2018 season. Make no mistake, we will go 0-3 with Fitzpatrick as our starter.” Marc, you’re wrong on BOTH counts. It’s about T-E-A-M, and this year’s T-E-A-M strikes me as being a lot more talented & resilient than what the Bucs have had in recent years. And Fitz is a very experienced backup QB who can lead us to WINS IF the rest of the T-E-A-M performs on the field as well as I think they’re capable of. But there’s only ONE way to find out, and that starts September 9th in New Orleans & doesn’t end until roughly 4 months after that.

  32. Jff Says:

See Pickgrin you’re part of the problem. As long as he throw a football we’re good mentality.

  33. ATLBuc Says:

    @Pickgrin

I agree dude. I think that Jameis had some bad judgement that night. But, that was over 2 years ago and there have been no public incidents since. Apparently the league felt similarly because he got 3 games insted of 6. I’ve been following this teams since my trophies were on the bookcase in the background of the John Mckay show and I’ve suffered through some horrible quaterback play. But, thats not the real issue here. Too often “fans” see something wrong in a player’s life and want to kick him to the curb because they feel that his behavior might hurt the team. This is a young person we’re talking about here.
But what the negative Nellys fail to realize is that once a player becomes a Buc, he is a part of the Buc family. And unless he goes Keith Hernandez or Ray Rice on us, the Buc family is going to support him. If they did not get rid of Doug Martin for a 2nd 4 game suspension, they darn sure are not going to jettison Jameis for something that happened two years ago. So, get over it, which you are going to do anyway when he comes back and starts ripping the NFC South to shreads

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Is anyone else having problems with delayed posts?

  35. Tony Says:

He denied the allegation and lied to management and the fans which becomes a character issue.

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s always the cover-up….not the initial crime that becomes the problem.

  37. BucEmUp Says:

I’m trying to.remember the last time I saw someone be so scrutinized without a sliver of evidence to what he is accused of.

There us no evidence that anything actually happened…..EVER!!!!!

  38. Marlow Says:

America’s QB… you still stand with this? It’s about as accurate as JW’s judgement skills.

  39. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

It does not matter that nothing has been proven. This is a trend of bad behavior. The team is not only affected how well it plays but also for its public perception, meaning, the team might play better and win more games with Jameis but if the fans do not support or go to the games then there can still be a loss of revenue. Aside from this, does the team what to pay Jameis a 100G contract in the next year or two?

  40. BrianBucs Says:

Licht needs to get on the phone with the Eagles about Nick Foles

  41. Chris Says:

Yeah this makes many think that winston got away with the Erika kinsman case. Winston’s star witness in Darby lies here. What makes you think he didn’t lie then?

If I’m Jason Licht, he risked his career on taking Jameis with all the baggage of a serious matter. They felt comfortable but it’s clear Jameis has screwed up. His on field behavior is as immature as his off. It’s time to move on from the mistake. Licht said it best. “Admit to mistakes when you realize them and move on”.

Sad. We could of drafted Rosen at 7 had Licht knew of this. The Bucs have to move on from him. It’s not the first string of bad behaviors. It’s his second sexual assault accusations and there were a string of other women who came forward saying he was very aggressive sexually towards them.

  42. ATLBuc Says:

@Tony Says: “He denied the allegation and lied to management and the fans which becomes a character issue.”

I may have missed it but I do not recall Jameis commenting on this matter one way ot the other. Also, we don’t know what Jameis told management. Just because yo don’t hear or read about something happening behind the scenes does not mean it did not happen. You really don’t know what he told management. Fans receive very little information.

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

I never thought there was anyone inside the uber ride besides Winston and the driver when the alleged incident was said to have happened. I’m more worried about point fixing with legal sports betting widespread on the horizon and the huge amount of money at risk. So is the NFL.

  44. Ed Kerber Says:

Jason Licht has only one more season to field a winner—this one. The receiving corps just needs a decent QB. If I were him, I’d trade for one more good QB (Foles, Brifgewater) and bring in old vets (Manning, Anderson, Moore, etc.) Jame-ass needs to be cut now. Send a message to the team that half-assign your career is unacceptable.

  45. mark2001 Says:

Pickgrin…you miss a huge point entirely…this is a business…the entertainment business. And though you might not care what female he would grab, including yours, the league does care. They don’t need a sexual assaulting QB in this league. Others messed up… they learned their lesson and moved on. But this is the second time Jameis has been in the national spotlight for similar things. And on top of it, he didn’t report it, and he lied about it. The Comish won’t put up with such things, even if you and the organization will. And what new GM or coach would want to step into that situation? A huge amount of salary cap eaten up by a guy that you can’t trust to control himself? No one worth a squat would step in and take the HC and GM job. I’m not so sure that wasn’t part of Grudens decision. So your logic just doesn’t fly.

  46. mark2001 Says:

ATL… If you let someone lie about it to provide and alibi and you don’t tell your boss and the league it is a lie, you are complicit in the lie. And if the stories are true that they had to investigate Darby’s cell phone to verify he wasn’t with Jameis at that time, it is no different than if he had made up the story himself.

  47. Austin Says:

It is absolutely ASTOUNDING to me how everyone is so quick to say get rid of Jameis. Do fans not see the current NFL QB situation? Do you want to be a bottom feeder forever? Winston has played (while yes it’s inconsistent) great football with not so great situations in his few years under helm here in Tampa and he is still so young. He has years and years and years to develop and get even better ans during that time the situations around him (both coaching and players) Will only get better as well. And while his on the field game will develop so Will his off the field antics, he will mature even more than he already has. The majority of the consistent dominant QBs in the league are far older than Winston. Now is one of those times to be patient and ride the Winston train, future bucs fans will thank us.

Run him out of town. He will sign with the Jags and bam super bowl. Who knows the true events. The woman is not pressing charges.

  51. Anonymous Says:

Really , no one knows how the investigation has played out . But the revelation of a second ride is damning to Winston publicly . He is teetering on the edge and has had some poor on field antics as well . Head butting a rival player against Dallas two seasons ago , the Saints game he came on the field and instigated contact …. plus his baggage that comes with him wether you like it or not . His comments on girl taking their place as support to men is old school but politically incorrect these days and he was roasted on that also . A lot of smoke here and he needs to buckle down and really prove himself if given the chance . I am pulling for Winston , hope he can get his act together and come out contrite.

  52. Dapostman Says:

Winston, should take his 3 game suspension and come out and apologize to this woman. Not to make excuses but to be contrite explaining that his drunkiness in this situation was no excuse for treating this woman like that. Don’t just sweep it under the rug. APOLOGIZE. Everybody makes mistakes and a contrite apology will go a long ways in repairing the PR damage done to Winston and the Bucs. Take your 3 games and come back as a better player and a better man. Americans love comebacks. Do it Winston!

  53. Anonymous Says:

I knew him and Darby lied lol

I’ve been saying it since the story first came out, they tried to create an alibi, it’s time we recognize that Jameis was not what the Bucs tried to paint him as. We should move on.

  54. Ugandan Knuckles Says:

I say fire Licht. He’s made too many wrong decisions. Winston only second to Aguayo.

  55. Capt.Tim Says:

Licht took a chance on Jameis. He believed the things at FSU were circumstantial. He believed Ronald Darby is a credible witness.

    But he was wrong

And Jameis is what we were afraid he was.

Sadly- Its Kotter and Lichts ass.

  56. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

And what is he capt. Tim?

  57. BigMacAttack Says:

Jameis is still a kid with a lot more responsibility than he’s probably ready for. He does the right thing 99% of the time. He has more money than he knows what to do with. He went out with buddies, sewed a few more wild oats than he should have, and that 1% when you screw up, someone is always there to catch you. He will grow out of this and up until the point of becoming the Bucs’ QB he never could afford to go out and throw money around like a big shot and drink more than he can handle. Shelve the booze for good. Focus which he obviously has since this occurred. I vote to keep him, extend him now for less than he might otherwise get, and keep moving forward. Fitz can handle it. There’s no way the Bucs will cut him loose. They have too much invested in him and the Glazers have seen far too many good players sent packing for petty BS.

  58. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Team Captain? First player in the building? Community Role Model? Team Leader?
Lets not mention some of his records.
    Or lets:
Tied most TD in game for a Rookie
Only QB in NFL HISTORY to throw over 4,000 yrs his first two years.
More TDs and YDs than any QB before 24th birthday.
    Pro bowler
    ROY
Only player in History to throw 200+ Yds first 6 games
I could keep going…That’s not even mentioning the fact that he has numerous franchise records and will take them all sooner than later.

It’s obvious no matter what Jameis does he has this impossible standard you all have because you are still mad we didn’t draft Mariota. You were never going to like Jameis unless he won SBs right away and said and did everything perfect.

Jameis is Jameis. We’ve been saying it all along. He is inconsistent on and off the field but I think a lot of that is youth. If you follow the bucs like I do (and not a casual poser here to spout off you hate because you read some headlines) then you know Jameis is a good person through his actions. He has only gotten more mature thear last few years and now is settling down with his family.

The best of Jameis Winston is yet to come and if you idiotic fans run him off I will never let y’all forget it and neither will he.

  59. Capt.Tim Says:

    Snowman.
He is a good kid, who cant control his impulse to make bad decisions.
Both on and off the field

And that is someone you can not trust

  60. LostinPa Says:

Here is the reason for the suspension, he failed to report the allegation when it happened. That alone warrants the suspension. He knows his past and should have gotten out ahead of this thing. Ya’ll are idiots to talk about dropping him over an alleged incident that has no evidence. Might it have happened they way the lady said, maybe. It’s just as plausible that it didn’t and he didn’t take it seriously. He should have and he will get suspended. That is more than enough lesson. Unless something tangible changes then that should be the end of it.
