Geeky Offensive Line Data

June 19th, 2018

Swift move.

Now let Joe be clear: He thinks the PFF tribe’s offensive line grades are about as useless as used toilet paper.

Joe has spoken with enough NFL general managers, coaches and players to learn the consensus of opinions that actually matter is that the PFF offensive line grades are a complete and total joke.

Joe once talked to an NFL general manager about the PFF offensive line grades and the suit got so animated in his outrage he nearly fell over backwards swinging his arms. And that’s no joke.

One NFL scout told Joe of the grades, “They’re cute.”

But Joe knows the PFF tribe has folks hoodwinked into thinking they are the utmost authority of NFL information. Eh, so be it. And for those folks, enjoy the following.

The PFF tribe thought the Bucs had the No. 10 pass blocking unit last year. This, of course, will destroy many Bucs fans’ knee-jerk narrative that the offensive line was a complete and total sieve and that America Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is lucky to be walking upright today.

Why does Joe bring this up since he is mocking the tribe? Well, what piqued Joe’s interest is that the Baltimore Crows were ranked No. 5 in pass blocking last year. Yes, by the Tribe.

And who did Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht cherry-pick from the Crows this offseason? Their starting center, Ryan Jensen.

Hhhmmm?

I wonder if this is the reason some of Licht’s signings haven’ worked out….he’s using PFF! It all makes sense now. /s

Ya I go by the good ol fashioned eye test. I saw a unit that didn’t look comfortable without a starting LG.. or RG, a first year center, and average tackles.

What do you get? An injury to your franchise QB, minimal running game, and 5 wins.

That’s why we got a new LG and center.. no coincidence

  3. RODNEY Says:

I saw that too Joe they had Jensen ranked highest on the Ravens oline

I think our offensive line is average at best.
We need a use our 1st and 2nd round picks on the line next year
We should have a top 12 pick
M.J. Stewart needs to be the man because we passed on some ballers to get him

  5. Bird Says:

With no running game until later in season , teams stacked the box and brought the house to force Jameis into poor decisions/ turnovers. That was the business model on how to be effective against bucs offense. Which in turn caused a poor bucs defense to be on the field way to much. And the defense was pretty “que terrible”.

So I think oline is better than people think. I also love the fact that we got the best rated olineman on a pretty good ravens oline who have been very good over the last few years.

I think the running game will be better this year and therefore Jameis takes next step. Hopefully oline can be and stay healthy cause that right side is big question mark.

PFF also rated OJ Howard as the worst first rounder of last year’s draft. At that point I quit, and will never use PFF as a reference for anything. They made it worse when one of their guys, who was asked specifically about the fact John Ross was rated higher, defended the metric.

Funny tho, these guys kill Donovan Smith consistently rating him as poor, but rate the O-line as 10th versus pass. Anyone with eyes could see that LG and RG were the biggest issues last season. Smith is a long way from where he thinks he is, but isn’t as bad as most believe.

M.J. Stewart needs to be the man because we passed on some ballers to get him

    Yea about that, 🤔

  8. AlabamaBucFan Says:

If I took a guess, next year’s draft will be focused on the Offensive line. It would not surprise me if Licht drafted a RT and RG in the First and Second round.

  9. Casey Morgan Says:

But we will NOT have a top 12 pick…

  10. adambomb418 Says:

4 cornerbacks were taken off the board in the 9 picks after MJ Stewart was selected. Then we selected Carlton Davis, yet it is Davis who is getting more hype it appears.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

maybe their play suffered because of “lack of communication”….maybe dirk should have d.smith “teach” the oline……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  12. Etzel Says:

So you guys really think the Bucs don’t consider PFF grades when acquiring talent???

When your running back gets tackled repeatedly behind the line of scrimmage and your QB is running for his life about half the time, and your LT gets repeatedly flagged for holding DEs who are badly beating him, which too often called back big gains and put us in a hole, you don’t have a 10th rated Offense in any metric; PFF missed the boat there somehow. However, their reservations about D. Smith are accurate, as opposed to WarFLOP’s opinion that D. Smith is a “Top Three LT in the NFL”. Just shows you why our Offense has not been better with one of the worst OL Coaches in the NFL making the decisions. Unfortunately Koetter just buys everything WarFLOP tells him and I suspect that also is why Licht kept misinterpreting our OL as better than it was.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

I thought our pass blocking was average at worst. It’s that we don’t get the ball out fast enough and that we had no run game that lead to more QB hits/sacks/fumbles than necessary imo.

Run blocking was bad though. Too many backs being hit behind the LOS. That’s on the line. I’m stoked to see how they play this year though with the shake-ups they’ve made

  15. desanova Says:

So why is Marpet flipping to LG when he played RG in 2016?

  16. BringBucsBack Says:

I agree with lord corn, the run blocking was atrocious. While the pass pro wasn’t perfect, I remember Jameis having plenty of time to find an open DB.
