Dominik: Bucs Won’t Cut Jameis

June 29th, 2018

Familiar with Team Glazer.

Joe understands how and why there is likely a lockdown of information right now from One Buc Palace.

First is the building closes for a period of time as the Fourth of July approaches. Second is good luck getting anyone to talk (now) about the three-game sentence slapped on America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

So when someone inside of One Buc Palace is not available — shoot, they won’t even put a name on a press release — the next-best thing is to get information from is a source who was a long-time employee of Team Glazer.

Enter former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik. Currently a co-host on “The Blitz,” heard weekdays on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Dominik spoke about the Jameis suspension. And he had terrible news for the folks who cannot wait to run Jameis out of town.

Dominik says Team Glazer will not cut Jameis.

“They’re not going to cut Jameis. That talk needs to stop,” Dominik said to his co-host Alex Marvez. “That’s not going to happen, because they have too much invested in him this year to see what he can become. And, yeah, has it been an embarrassment to the organization? Sure. Sadly, this is all coming down — and he did this to himself — but this is all coming down at the worst time, because there’s not much to talk about in the entire National Football League except Jameis Winston. So you can’t even bury this in Tampa.

“This is something you’re going to have to deal with, so it’s been an embarrassment but it’s been an embarrassment that everybody’s kind of known about. Now the suspension’s kind of the black eye of his doings, but I think, from an organizational standpoint, you’re talking about the No. 1 (overall) pick, a player that has played well and has turned the ball over way too much. And I think that’s his biggest weakness, is that he tries to force too many throws and doesn’t … understand it’s OK to punt.

“I think they, as an organization, would sit there and say, ‘Let’s play this year out. Obviously, if something else happens, that changes everything, but at this point, the punishment’s there and they’re moving forward. But I don’t think there’s any way you cut Jameis over this situation, because I think you’re seeing the punishment but you’ve already heard the crimes. So they’re staring now at a player that not only is going to miss three games, but has a fifth-year option coming up at just under $21 million. Right now, it’s guaranteed for injury. You don’t have to worry about that until the season goes through, but it’s more short- and long-term, how this plays out for Jameis.

“Obviously, there’s a lot more to the Uber incident than I think we all heard. Clearly, that would have been something that if (the NFL) felt (he was) not guilty about, I think this would have been a little bit of different punishment or (none) at all. Certainly, there were the red flags. …

“[The Uber hassle has] come back to haunt him and haunt the organization in a tremendous way, because this is as frustrating as a situation can be for (GM) Jason Licht, for (coach) Dirk Koetter and the Glazer family.”

What jumped out at Joe is Dominik’s suggestion there well could be more to the story. This is intriguing. This has Joe’s eyebrow raised.

Mystery!

Drama!

here comes the I emailing the team I will cancel my season tickets if we don’t cut him. Yeah and you will buy them again if he leads us to the playoffs

  2. Sc Bucs fan Says:

    Nor should they

  3. Jeffbuc Says:

    Bucs just realeased jr Sweezy

  4. Robert Says:

    jw just cut

  5. Jeffbuc Says:

He asked for the release because in the locker room him and Jameis were sitting by each other and Jameis grabbed in his private regions. But Ronald Darby said he was there and it didn’t happen. But come to find out Kellen Winslow was there and he saw it happen.

  6. Casey Morgan Says:

    Just cut JR Sweezy though…

  7. Buc3 Says:

Where was the NFL analyst lynch mob when the Bengals drafted Joe Mixon?

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

The could of cut Sweezy last week, the timing of this is to take the talk off of America’s Groper.

  9. Buccernutter Says:

I just wanted to say I lost respect for Joe when he said we have a 90% chance of going 0-3.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Dude was black out drunk.
Dude was in the car alone with her.

Why would she just make this sh1t up and file a complaint with uber?

Most non Buc people are reacting to this confused because the NFL is saying they think he sexually assaulted her essentially – but are only giving him 3 games. If they believed he truly did it then why not 6?

It’s all weird man. I duno wtf to think but f*ck man I’m just really upset and dissapointed in Jameis in the end. Grow the f*ck up man. Maybe you have since this – but FSU should have been the only life wake up call you needed. I mean you were accused of f*cking raping someone. My life would never be the same after something like that. I sure as f*ck am not going to grope anyone. F*cking jesus christ man.

  11. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

The “Release Jameis” crowd are the result of over a decade of losing. We’ve become so used to losing that losing a star player isn’t that big of a deal to them because it’ll just lead to more losing, which we are so prone to. All these “righteous” fans taking the moral high ground need to step off their high horse and realize without Jameis there will be no winning. If we let go of the #1 pick (which we blew an entire season to get) then we are setting ourselves back at least five years. In case you haven’t noticed the QB Class this year is awful, so the answer will not lie in the draft. Bringing in a FA? Good luck with that. If the Cut Jameis crowd has their way we’ll be losing for another decade while we watch Jameis win rings just like Blount, Talib, and Bennett.

  12. Buc3 Says:

    @buccernutter
What fairy tale land do you live in where this percentage is too high?

  13. MadMax Says:

Cuttin Sweezy….probably another one too in order to get Foles!!! Yeah baby! Its coming!!!!

  14. tval Says:

He can sit out 6 games and still outperform milquetoast Mariota….that’ll end THAT fledgling debate..lol!!!

  15. 813bucboi Says:

he wont be cut this year…..but 01/01/19 will be a different story especially if we don’t win a playoff game this year…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

Talk show dominik also fought to keep Jfro-6pak around and that worked out real well in 2013!!!!!! Too bad he did not listen to Coach Schiano, who wanted Carson Palmer!!!!!!!

  17. T REX Says:

Anyone who calls a someone with a penchant for turnovers and a 20-28 is already a star player is on medicinal maryjane.

  18. Jeffbuc Says:

    Buc3
Great point the bengals drafted a guy that did way worse to a female. And it was caught on video. Where is the outrage. Where are the fans getting rid of there season tickets. It’s just are stupid fans who want to get rid of good players just because they never liked him. There football players there not saints. He was not charged with a crime. Joe Nixon was charged but yet he still plays. Ray Lewis killed a man he is in the hall of fame. Can you imagine if there was social media and cell phones everywhere when Sapp was 22 years old here in Tampa.

  19. JJ Says:

There may not be any more to it. The NFL doesn’t need hard evidence to suspend Jameis and if he is too drunk to remember and he cannot defend himself. That’s on him. The NFL believes the driver, who is very probably is telling the truth in this case.

For the rest of his career, it won’t be enough for Jameis to just clean up his act. He is going to have to avoid public places unless he is wearing a body cam or have someone recorded everything in case someone wants to come forward and make up a story. I’m sure there are those on radical left who would with the assumption that they will believed.

  20. Pete I Says:

They probably won’t but they will suffer the PR nightmare of having the face of the franchise America’s Choir Boy.

  21. JMan5 Says:

The release Jameis crowded doesn’t want a monster as QB.

  22. miken Says:

so they couldn’t prove Tom Brady took air out of a football and he got 4 games but Jameis sexual assulted someone and only got 3. I think we got a break and I guess it’s best to take a deal than fight. Will be interesting to see how he comes in. Could be totaly focused and have a big year.

  23. Buccernutter Says:

I guess a fairy land of optimism.

    Idiot.

  24. MadMax Says:

@miken, dude better be sober af and on his game the whole way through….he’s that dude now and he knows it.

  25. Roy T. Buford Says:

Not a lot of stock in Dom. I talked to him his final season…the Bucs had lost like 9 straight games…the team was a dumpster fire. I asked him “Mark, how long before you guys make some kind of change to end this home losing streak? When are you going to do something to shake up coaching.” He told me what I figured he would. He said “Let’s hold the line for this season and see where head.” Little did we know…he’d be gone too.

I think keeping Winston on the roster is a good business decision. And I think stripping him of team captain, franchise face, and starter also a good business decision. Bring someone in now to compete with our back up Fitz. #3 goes to #3 on the roster.

  26. RaShad Brown Says:

Just want to know what the reaction was when Big Ben was going through his situation. The Rooney family stood by Ben. Hope the Glazers stand by Jameis Winston.

  27. MadMax Says:

Im sorry but i predict JW is gonna fk it all up and go haywire just like freefree….we just cant catch a break!!!! Bucs life!!! Cleveland south!!!

DO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO FOR FOLES, PUUULEEEEEEZE!!!!!!!!

  28. MadMax Says:

Im sorry but i predict JW is gonna fk it all up and go haywire just like freefreeee….we just cant catch a break!!!! Bucs life!!! Clevland south!!!

DO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO FOR FOLES!!!

  29. Anonymous Says:

Bucnutter…I remember Joe talking about the small chance of making the playoffs if we go 1-2 and even a smaller chance if we go 0-3…like about a 2 plus percentage. But I never heard of a 90% chance of losing all three games.

  30. Wausa Says:

Only lunatics think the Bucs will cut Jameis.

Hopefully, he will get out of his own way.

He is an incredible talent that has a chance to be great.

  31. Marc Says:

    America’s Groper, at it again!

  32. JameisNOT Says:

They should be able to secure a 5th round draft pick for JameisNOT. Isn’t that where Brady was selected?

  33. JameisNOT Says:

Ryan leaf was a “great talent” as well.

  34. Joe Says:

Bucnutter…I remember Joe talking about the small chance of making the playoffs if we go 1-2 and even a smaller chance if we go 0-3…like about a 2 plus percentage. But I never heard of a 90% chance of losing all three games.

Teams that go 0-3 have a 2.9 percent chance of making the playoffs (since 1980). Teams that start out 1-2 have a 10 percent chance of making playoffs.

And Bucs have the worst strength of schedule of any team in the first three games in the Super Bowl era.

Cherry on top is Bucs just lost their starting quarterback for first three games.

    Good times!

  35. meh Says:

    Cut him.

  36. Mike Johnson Says:

Only a Reputable NFl team would fire Jameis. Notice the emphasis on Reputable.
But this does shine a dim light on Winston. The only way he redeems himself or at least diminishes some of the ill will is to..WIN. Win and everybody forgets. Lose and they all chime in with..Lookayear, I told you so!!

  37. Buccernutter Says:

10th paragraph on Doug Martin 2.0.

Let’s just say I disagree. I can tell their are 2 Joes though lol.

Wish I could bet that one.

  38. MadMax Says:

@Joe, thats exactly why Licht and Coach K will still be here next year too….unless they do something out of this world crazy (they wont, dumpster fire dont need more fuel)

Too many things out of their hands, but IMO they’re doing what they can.

    NOW GET FOLES!!!

  39. Buccernutter Says:

    There*

No Joe you said, “players could be cut or traded as a result of a playoff-less season, which is 90 percent likely starting 0-3”

  40. JameisNOT Says:

GM had a chance to sign Foles last year and could not close the deal. It was down to Philly and Tampa. Yet another example of how this GM cannot perform his job. Don’t forget, this is the same guy that selected a kicker in the second round

  41. Joe Says:

GM had a chance to sign Foles last year and could not close the deal.

You did hear this week why Foles turned down the deal (he wanted to play for Dirk Koetter), didn’t you? Had nothing to do with Licht or the Bucs.

  42. Tbbucs3 Says:

The lack of knowledge about the Bucs are coming out about the Bucs both nationally and locally. The national crowd is saying let’s cut JW, the local crowd is saying let’s sign an average QB like Teddy Bridgewater or Nick Foles. Nothing against those guys but Bridgewaters needs a great defense (Bucs have Mike Smith) and Foles needs Chip Kelly (Bucs have Uber-Conservative Dirk Koetter) no pun intended.

  43. RRSRQ Says:

When the news came out, the league could’ve likely got the same info that they got over the summer, a lot of this is about the dead NFL season, after OTA’s, you saw how the handled the Jerry Richardson Panthers issue (sold the team) or the other guy who had a domestic issue with his wife from (giants, panthers, one of them teams), they literally could’ve done this before last season ended, but they waited until the quiet NFL season, after the NBA finals, before NBA free agency, baseball is in the summer so nobody is talking baseball, now all the talking heads talking Jameis, where were the talking heads (except NFL Sirius XM) when JW was working in the community (this is not excusing his behavior), but this could’ve easily happened when the NFL wanted it to, they love the drama too

  44. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Who cares if he is cut ? Not me! Have we got better because of him? Have we won games? Does the team have more Integrity because of him? would you want your daughter to date him? Is he a real face of any franchise?

  45. jeff Says:

I do not want him here anymore period . he is a low character guy and a punk

  46. tgreg Says:

He is after all “pro bowler” and America’s QB

    Joe knows QBs

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Obviously, if something else happens, that changes everything,”

Thanks Dom for providing us with DEJA VU all over again. When the Bucs took the ultimate gamble and signed Jameis that was pretty much the cover.

He’s made youthfui mistakes but he has matured. “Obviously if something else happens that changes everything.” That was the common refrain of pundits, players and NFL leaders…”Obviously if something else happens….”

How many “something elses” did they really mean. Does betraying your team and boozing it up at three AM with two dudes with horrible reputations…a convicted rapist…how is that not an OBVIOUS breach of loyalty?

  48. MattSpy05 Says:

The evil truth about professional sports is that these guys aren’t outstanding citizens. Every team sells their soul for winning, now the fans get to do that too. He will be booed his first time out but if he performs we will have selective memory. It’s just how it is….

  49. Skipper Says:

What’s all this Foles talk, he’s a journeyman back-up QB who filled in admirably for the injured Wentz. There is a reason why he has bounced around the league as a back-up.
