J.R. Sweezy Cut

June 29th, 2018

“Jason, I understand Amazon is looking for delivery contractors locally. We can help this guy out.”

Boy, talk about trying to slip a story under the door.

The Bucs have released embattled, hurt right guard J.R. Sweezy today, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Sweezy, who broke his leg late last season, never could recover. Joe thought Sweezy was making progress when, in the last practice of minicamp, Joe saw Sweezy walk onto the practice field wearing shorts and a baseball cap, carrying a towel.

In Sweezy’s two Bucs seasons he started 14 games.

Sweezy was always good to Joe and he seemed like a really nice guy. But as Bill Parcells famously said, your best ability is your availablity.

Unless Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht makes a move, it appears Caleb Benenoch is your starting right guard this fall.

  1. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Thank you Jesus. Licht is fighting for his job at this point. He better start making some moves.

  2. Roy T. Buford Says:

Probably a good call. Another wasted signing but it makes sense. When a player gives you more negatives than positives…all you can do.

  3. Lunchbox Says:

So looking to further build the O-Line or go get another QB? Bridgewater perhaps?

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Makes that o-line depth a little sketchy! See ya J.R.! Too bad it didn’t work out!

  5. Destinjohnny Says:

Been saying it so long so long so long
Jason is a scout not a visionary gm

  6. D-Rome Says:

I wish him well but he was a terrible signing from day one. Anyone who thought it was a great sign a few years ago was only kidding themselves.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

Maybe they “realized” its season over and the full rebuild must now commence!!!!!!!

    #season_over!!!!!!!!!!

  8. deminion Says:

so glad dude never played and he was always getting beat anyway

  9. MadMax Says:

Wasted high dollar signings and wasted 1st rounders….no wonder we’re basement nfc south….

But hopefully that will soon change! Get Foles! Get it done Licht!

  10. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Well

    Finally some good Buccaneer news!

Hopefully that frees up a little cap for a Qb signing, or at least an OLineman for the right side.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

so we have to rely on benenoch or evan smith at RG…..lol….this offseason just keeps getting better!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Jmarkbuc Says:

    813

    Were we relying on Sweezy?

  13. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    More waste of Glazer cash.

  14. K_Bassuka Says:

Finally some good news. Let’s move forward and let’s go bucs!

  15. Buc believer Says:

About freeking time! To bad it won’t be enough to save Lichts job. Bye Bye Licht thanks for the bad free agent signings and bad draft picks.

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    REALIST

what happened to being totally confident in this staff?……dirk and smitty should be able to really the troops and show their coaching abilities….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Thank God for some other Bucs news.

    2 years 2 late

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

    813

    and…..?

    Just another Licht special..

  21. Jeffbuc Says:

Who the heck wants Bridgewater noodle arm. Who hasn’t thrown as many touchdowns in his career as jameis has in a season. Yeah and let’s trade McCoy and a first round pick for Foles who will be a free agent and according to joe we tried to sign last year and he didn’t want to come here. Do you guys even think before you post. If we release jameis like you guys want. Fitzpatrick will be are starting griffin the backup or we will bring in a veteran and keep three qbs. That is not going to happen. If what jameis did is so horrible he should be cut. Than why did the company that he works for only suspend him 3 games. You didn’t see the 49rs cut foster this off season. Who as caught with weed and arrested. Then accused of beating up his exgitlfriend and for Having an assault rifle. Because everyone posting on pro football talk believed he was guilty and done in this league. Everyone was calling for John Lynch to release him. Then guess what come to find out the ex was being vindictive and trying to get him in trouble and he actually didn’t do it. And don’t you think if their girl was so traumatized she would have went straight to the police. She did t she just told Uber. So it wasn’t that big of a deal to her either

  22. D-Rome Says:

Maybe they “realized” its season over and the full rebuild must now commence!!!!!!!

Uh, what? I thought you were “Totally Confident” the team is going to turn things around. Actually, I know you were.

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

The “real” fans have known that the roster was the real problem and was the bottom of the NFC South roster, that has not changed!!!!!! But now we have seen JaGropeWins wreck the pirate ship and the GM will not survive!!!!! And if you get a new GM he will want to bring in “their” coaches!!!!!!!

  24. Steven007 Says:

I feel cheated that we didn’t get the 15th America’s Quarterturnbetweenerlegs article of the day.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Be still my heart! This is a story about a Bucs’ player other than Jameis? (Thought you could sneak it past us, didn’t you Joe).

Oh wait, it’s about an ex-Bucs player. We’re still good.

Before I forget Joe, was curious about what it would take for the Bucs to receive a comp pick (maybe a #1 or a #2?) if Jameis is traded, cut, whatever like so many seem to want. Any thoughts?

  26. martinigal Says:

Bye haters! Next team up. JR…go kick a$$

  27. Marc Says:

Let’s not forget the true focus at fans, fellas …. AMERICA’S GROPER!

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

Awh man..Say it ain’t so? My man Easy (money) Sweezy. The Bucs got tired of him..gettin his money for nothin and his chicks for free!! To be honest though, Sweez is no worse than several ex Bucs who took the organization for a ride via his spinnin and shinanigans. Good luck Sweez. You provided me with a couple yrs of comic relief. It took the Bucs a good minute. But they FINALLY caught on to you bro.

  29. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Bucs freeing up space to sign America’s QB, Jameis Winston, to a nice new contract.

  30. Sc Bucs fan Says:

If there is one thing I’ve learned about this blog over the last week is, while JW is a knucklehead, far larger knuckleheads post here.

  31. MadMax Says:

@jeffbuc, you’re comparing an ex who has a history to an incident with a stranger…come on man….apples oranges.

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Realist

I won’t be surprised at all.

The only way this staff survives is a winning record this season and/or Jameis playing like a top 5-10 QB and us being a top 5-10 offense.

We’ll see how they weather this sh1t storm… f*ck my life

  33. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @DR

I think the highest comp pick you can get is a 3rd rounder. It’d be based on net additions vs net subtractions and what each player was worth in terms of the contracts they sign to with new teams

  34. DB55 Says:

We should have kept Jon Robinson. Licht should be brought up on criminal charges for assault against Winston. And he was supposed to be an oline guru. Child Please

  35. Couch Fan Says:

Realist you are starting to sound like the sheep you usually speak of. You been telling us how great this coaching staff is and now you are trying to tell us they arent good enough to survive because of 1 players 3 game suspension?…. Come on now…

  36. Zwak Says:

I would go with Ryan Griffin over Fitzpatrick, give the kid a chance!

  37. T in Orlando Says:

    @DR

The highest comp pick any team can receive is a 3rd rounder, and as Lord Cornelius said, it’s based players lost in Free Agency vs Players signed in FA. That being said, if we cut or trade Jameis, he will not be figured into the equation for comp picks. Only if he fulfills his contact and the Bucs don’t resign him.

  38. Trench War Says:

Ask Richie Incognito to come out of retirement ..that would solidify that line. Fitz needs all the help he can get to keep upright.

  39. Trench War Says:

Richie is ready to come back.

  40. GhostofSchiano Says:

yeah boy, incognito and winston hitting the night life together after a game….what could possibly go wrong

  41. Buc believer Says:

Dude was a disgrace to floppy hat wearers everywhere.

  42. Kgh4life Says:

Off topic, but, go get Flacco. Hasn’t played up to his potential the last couple seasons, however, change of scenery and better players at the skill positions you never know,a 3rd should do it.

  43. AlteredEgo Says:

    Hardly you you….

  44. JohnLynchBrokeMyBody47 Says:

I wish J.R. well. Now let the battle for RG begin. RT, too, if DD isn’t ready.

  45. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Cut Jameis and I’m done with football, and my season tickets. Some of you Bucs fans are just completely moronic on how much you want him cut it’s almost like you have nothing better to do then just post the same thing over and over again. You are the same fans that have kept this team in the dumps with your whinny complaints about every mistake a Buc has made. Makes sense why some of you complain in the stadium to sit down when cheering for the team. Just a bunch of losers. This is football folks not church. Go Bucs!

  46. Doctor Stroud Says:

No more free agents guards! And, please, no more hype over free agent guards. Thank you! #PaidFloridaVacation #GlazerLootIsTheBest

  47. Not there yet Says:

Lol finally a positive news story

  48. gambelero Says:

Put me down with the “finally some good news” crowd. Now, we can do the “why not sign this guy?” “why not sign that guy?” threads again.

Lord, 813, MJ, DRules, Realist and other real fans back. Maybe the Uber doldrums are over.

  49. Pickgrin Says:

    Bout Time.

So did Sweezy pass a physical finally – or did they have to work out an “injury” settlement?

  50. Roy T. Buford Says:

Think they are a bit thin in depth on O line now…hope they can get some more help in here.

  51. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Goodbye “I.R. Sneezy”

  52. Defense Rules Says:

T and Lord C … I never did understand those comp pick rules (maybe because we never ‘earned’ any). Don’t see Jameis going anywhere until the end of this year though, so we MIGHT potentially be in line for an additional 3rd rounder, who knows. Whether or not he plays this year I think depends on a number of yet-to-be-determined factors. One being if the Glazers still view him as a franchise QB (lot more at stake for them than for any of us). Another might be whether or not any more damaging info comes out (I don’t assume any longer that we’ve heard the last of this escapade). And potentially how well Fitz plays (if we’re doing well with him at the helm, AND if the Glazers want to move on, MAYBE they keep Fitz in there & let Jameis be #2 for awhile). So many WHAT IFs … boggles the mind.

  53. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    YES, WHAT HE SAID!!!

For me though…it will be I’m done with TAMPA BAY!

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ShutTheBucUp Says:
“Licht is fighting for his job at this point.”

    Not even.

There is no evidence of that at all.

It was Lovie who insisted they draft Winston, if that’s your angle.

And as far as win/losses, the coaches might be replaced if it comes down to it, but Licht is here to stay. He is exactly was the Glazers want in a GM. Control the money, work good trades, and draft well.

There is no denying that Licht has added some excellent talent to this team. He’s staying.

  56. Bird Says:

    Good move Saves 6.5 mil.

Let benenoch and kappa battle it out

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“The only way this staff survives…”

same sort of thing people said last year. Wrong then. Wrong now.

  58. Season Is Over Says:

Jason Licht paid this guy at least 15 million plus. Let that sink in for a moment. Can anyone even remember a single play this guy made? Now they are stuck with a hole in the line and Licht has another excuse to sell the continued losing. This is truly one of the worst free-agent signs of the decade. I’m sure Licht holds 5 of the top 10 spots in that category.

  59. Pete Mitchell Says:

This makes letting Kevin Pamphile walk seem like a bad idea. I thought he played rather well and he didn’t break the bank in Nashville.
