“How Much Do You Need, Dude?”

May 30th, 2018

Calls out America.

Joe can just imagine the reaction among Bucs fandom this will stir up.

Half of Bucs fans (otherwise known as the haters and skeptics of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston) will rise as one and applaud.

The other half will throw empty beer bottles at their bartender in disgust.

In no uncertain terms, Jameis got called on the carpet this morning on NFL Network and the ire came from “Good Morning, Football” co-host Kyle Brandt.

Brandt sounds like a lot of Bucs fans that are tired of Jameis’ hype and promise and want to see wins, and to hell with the potential. In a segment with each co-host choosing an NFC quarterback who has much to prove this season, Brandt named Jameis and went off.

“Jameis Winston’s resume is incredible,” Brandt began. “He’s a national champion. He’s a No. 1 pick. He’s a Heisman Trophy winner — he plays baseball! Has he played any playoff ball at all? Because his resume hits the brakes when he gets to the pros.

“You know the problem? Look at the resumes he is playing up against in the NFC South: Drew Brees, Hall of Famer, Super Bowl champ; Matt Ryan, NFC champ, MVP; Cam Newton, NFC champ, MVP. Jameis has none of that.

“The most memorable image of Jameis last year was eating that W, licking the fingers. That became the jerk of the season.

“There are certain divisions where there are three teams at the top and the fourth doesn’t even matter. Tampa, Jameis — this is a guy we don’t even talk about because of Cam, Brees, Matt Ryan. [Jameis has] lots to prove.

“Isn’t this the put up or shut up year for Jameis? Let’s go, dude! Enough of this! None of this reality shows and on-the-field and off-the-field stuff. You better keep up with the Joneses of the NFC South because you will get embarrassed in that division. You can go 6-10 in that division like that. Like a snap of a finger. So Jameis has a ton to prove.

“They got him the receiver. They got him the defense. They drafted the tight end last year. How much do you need, dude? They drafted a running back.

“So, this [season] is everything for Jameis. Put up or shut up.”

Well, a few things. Joe cannot disagree with a lot of what Brandt said. Right now, Jameis is the modern day version of Jeff George. Jameis has the stats but not that many wins to show for his efforts. Unlike George and to his credit, Jameis isn’t a lunkhead, me-first tool. Jameis is just about the perfect team guy.

Was it Jameis’ fault that the Bucs conned themselves into believing Doug Martin was a competent running back? Martin the past two seasons had the worst back-to-back seasons of yards-per-carry in the NFL since 1940 — that’s no typo!

So unless Jameis had so much control over the offense that he decided who to play and that he also audibled every play, that’s not on Jameis.

Last year, just like a good quarterback should do, he led the Bucs on four fourth-quarter drives that gave the Bucs either the lead or tied the game. Unless Jameis played defensive end and Joe missed it, the (almost) sackless defense, the gutless defense was responsible for coughing up each one of those games, not Jameis.

Was Jameis the guy who jumped offsides at Carolina, for example? Was Jameis the guy who couldn’t stop friggin’ Brett Hundley of all poeple? Was it Jameis who gagged away six points and 75 yards on three plays to Tyrod Taylor? Joe could go on.

Is Jameis blameless for the Bucs going 5-11 last year? Absolutely not! Is he the sole reason the Bucs were 5-11 last year? Hell no!

And Brandt should be careful. Yeah, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht loaded up on defense this offseason. Joe isn’t exactly convinced the defense will magically turn around with young corners when through two seasons under the current defensive regime, young corners have done virtually nothing short of giving Bucs fans irritable bowel syndrome. So more young corners is the answer? Color Joe dubious.

Sadly for Jameis, this is life in the NFL. It’s all about scoreboard. It’s all about wins. A quarterback can put up Hall of Fame numbers but if the team is losing, it doesn’t matter, he’s going to catch hell for the team’s ills. That’s what happens with the face of the franchise.

Is it Jameis’ fault three of the best quarterbacks in the NFL are in his division? No. However, if Jameis is the quarterback many feel he is, and Joe is one of them, time to put the team on your back and find a way to win, find a way to pull that pirate ship out of Buccaneers Cove (last place in the NFC South). If the defense stinks, make sure you have the ball in the final seconds, just like you ended the 2017 season.

Brett Favre was a turnover machine when he was young but he found ways to win games. Jameis needs to somehow find some of that same magic.

Is it fair to Jameis? No. But life in the NFL isn’t about fair. It’s about wins, something the Bucs have been in dire need of since Chucky was jettisoned in January 2009.

He is the opposite of Freeman. Results on the field may be the same but Freeman was/is a quitter. Just really didn’t care for football that much, despite what the team sold the fans years ago.

[Sorry, not going there. Loads of insinuations. — Joe]

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

The Bucs have already committed to paying Jameis like a big boy….I really hope he can throw the ball accurately and on time to the spot…like all the other big boy NFL QB’s do…we’ll know soon enough…if there are still doubts the Bucs will draft a QB in the 1st round next year ,pay Jameis his $$$ 25,000,000….and let things sort themselves out after the 2019 season…if Jameis’s footwork and mechanics have not been self corrected this off season…he is doomed to be hit and miss

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    He’s 100% right

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

IF the defense is average or better
IF the run game is average or better
IF Jameis doesn’t suffer a major injury

Then yeah I agree. No reason we shouldn’t be a top 5-10 scoring offense and post a winning record and push for the playoffs.

Too bad in 2017 we had the last ranked defense in points/yards per drive; one of the worst run games in the league; and a hurt QB.

But yeah none of that means sh1t apparently. The NFL is apparently Tennis where only the QB effects the game

  7. Robert Says:

    thank you anthem.

  8. Michael Etze Says:

So wait. They’re going to pay Jameis AND draft a QB 1st overall…. Yeah, glad you’re the GM of Burger King and not a NFL team.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

joe screams “no excuses”!!!!! unless you are talking abour JW3!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Trump's Stylist Says:

Why would anyone take what he says about football seriously? He was on Days of our Lives and Real World LOL god i hate the offseason

  11. Syl Says:

There was a reason Tampa had the 1st pick in the draft. They have stunk for years, and they are building something with the young picks. I actually think this year will be a jump to the 10 to 11 win range. Again if they had a FG kicker, a running back, a better defense. He is the face of the franchise and he will catch the most blame, but he is far from the fault of this team. I wish they sat him after the Minnesota game to allow his shoulder to heal earlier, and it would have given them an opportunity to get back into the hunt. This is the best QB Tampa has ever had.

  12. Not there yet Says:

He is right while Joe keeps up the excuses. You start off your excuses with Doug Martin? Where has Matthew Stafford 1000 yard rusher been but dude plays well. Whether you want to admit it or not they are playoff caliber because of the new defense and weapons on offense not named Winston.he is above average when you mention quarterbacks from 20 years ago but in today’s nfl he’s an underachiever

  13. martinii Says:

I Agree with joe. This is a team sport and there were a lot of breakdowns team wide over the mast few years. I Agree Jameis needs to work and improve in a lot of areas, but every other position on the team needs to work and improve also. If Jameis was the sole problem and everything else was working at 100% then Jameis would be gone and another QB would be under center.

  14. webster Says:

    @ joe

Young farve also had a defense. Lets not pretend that young farve put the team on his back. In 93 the defense was ranked #2. In 94 the defense was ranked 6th. In 95 they were ranked 14 but 4 in pts allowed. In 96 the defense was 1 in both catagories. That defense made up for all the picks farve threw but for some reason we expect jameis to cover up for his defenses that finish last. Unbelievable. When will people learn it takes more than a good qb in order to win?

  15. Terry Lee Bateson II Says:

You truly wanna be in the playoffs, go get Demarco Murray, and if are offensive line is as good as I truly believe it will be, Demarco is a true difference maker, Jameis won’t have to do it alone, Demarco is not only a strong enough back to keep drives alive but make that home run, game winning play, and make the Tampa Bay Bucs a serious threat in the NFC South!

  16. Terry Lee Bateson II Says:

Go get Demarco Murray! Make him a Buccaneer!! Go Bucs!!!! 4 life!!!

  17. TX Stick Carrier Says:

Webster, wait…….are you suggesting that this is perhaps a team type sport? That’s just crazy talk!

  18. Joe Says:

LOL Joe never imagined when he started this site he would ever see a “Days of Our Lives” blast. 🙂

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

That’s an absurd take. Let me see…we know judge QB’s by the division they play in? Is it Jameis fault that the Bucs play in perhaps the toughest division in football with QBs that are HOF in one case and MVP’s in the other two. How does that make Jameis a bad QB?

Again I confess to being a homer but seriously…if the Bucs had played the Jags division they could have made the playoffs and turned in a total turd in the playoffs like the Jags did against Buffalo. That game should not have had a winner!

Football fans seem to have trouble with nuance…not all but many including the so called “experts” like this dingle

My son was in from Columbus last week. He asked me if I still liked Jameis or was I disappointed. I said yes I still support him and believe he has the talent but this year will tell. He simply nodded and thought OK. But he is not a rush to judgement kind of guy and is largely able to keep an open mind.

In all that I read here about the topic of Jameis….there are many posters who get it right but there is one who has it nailed and that is Joe! Whether both Joes get the credit or one is doing the work in this area I find that the Joe’s always present Jameis stories in a balanced fashion…conceding his problems while still pointing out his strengths.

JOE himself has the most accurate take on Jameis IMHO.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All the so-called “fans” who whined, moaned, cried and complained about Jameis beating division foe New Orleans….can just shut up when it comes to this subject.

Wanted a better draft position….that is a losing culture right there….time to stop that and demand every win you can get.

Yes, it’s put up or shut up for Jameis….but he is certainly not alone….Koetter needs to Buc-up…..he can run around calling for a Big F–kin’ stick but where is it? (less than a TD in the first half and longest rushing TD 2yds. Smith had garbage to play with last year…..now he doesn’t, so his number is definitely up.

And, Joe….if Jameis can’t bring us a winning season, you need to stop calling him something only you beleive he is….”America’s QB”.
Listen, I love JW, but don’t put him on that pedestal until he’s earned it.

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Jameis has a defense and running game, he’ll win
Comparing Jameis to Jeff George is silly
Some qb’s need a team around them to win
Jameis was the first step in getting the Bucs out of cellar- it takes time to build a championship team- Bucs are on right track and playoffs are possible this year if breaks fall their way

  22. 813bucboi Says:

Winston sure has his fair share of the blame…..but I think brandt should take out winstons name and insert dirks name….

    dirk has a franchise QB…..
    dirk has weapons…..
dirk has his buddy coaching up the defense…..
    dirk has his RB…..
dirk has his 1st round TE…..
    dirk has an elite WR….
dirk has 2 proven SB champs, GMC & a 1st round pick along the dline……
dirk has spent high picks in the secondary…..
dirk has one of the best LB core in the league…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…..#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m not Winston’s biggest fan but he can play if they let him. But it’s a team sport and you can’t discount that horrible defense, Complete lack of coaching and virtually no running game at all.

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s pointless to engage in this debate but I’m bored.

    @not there yet

    Stafford? Let’s talk about Stafford.

As of right now; Stafford is 6-53 against teams with a winning record. That isn’t a typo. He was 5-46 going into 2017; and went 1-7 last year against winning teams. In his 9th season.

In Winston’s first 3 seasons he already has about as many wins against winning teams as Stafford. Hell he’d actually have more than him if we held leads against the Bills/Panthers/made simple FG against the Pats.

  25. MARLOW_1976 Says:

I demand a recount for JW being named “America’s QB” on this site. Zero merit!

    Sincerely,

Skeptic of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston

  26. Bucnjim Says:

Every good/great NFL team has bad games but here is the difference: During these bad games usually all three phases are playing poorly. The Bucs have found ways to lose from every phase every game. One game Winston throws int. to lose, next week special teams give up huge return to lose, following game defense gives up the final score to lose at the end. Then back to Winston fumbling, missed kick to win, missed tackle gain of 50 yards to set up FG. Last year the Bucs used all three phases to find ways to lose. Hard to win or even gain momentum playing like that.

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

Jameis is under heavy pressure on almost every pass play they run. Koetter is the worst play caller in the league. The Bucs have had tons of problems, the least of which is Jameis. When have the Bucs had a better QB? Drew Brees chokes against good defenses. So does Cam and So does Ryan. Play some damn defense. We’ll see what happens this season but if they stay healthy, the results should come in spades.

  28. Mbfists Says:

I’m my opinion he just needs to be ok with punting and learning to live on a fresh set of downs on paper our defense should be able to keep us in games

  29. unbelievable Says:

    “They got him the defense.”

    We shall see…

  30. Dooshlarue Says:

Agree for the most part with Past-his-prime Pretty Boy.

But Joe, come on now……better pump the brakes on the “friggin’ Brett Hundley of all poeple?”

He may just turn out to be the next “Kirk Friggin’ Cousins or Case Freakin” Keenum!”

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Consider this…if the defense had held the lead in those 4 games last year, the Bucs would have gone 9-7.

Things would have played out much differently, eh?

Now the defense is fixed. And CBs are not as major an issue as Joe thinks…which he will soon learn.

  32. Dave Pear Says:

    Jameis IS America’s Quarterback.
    Believe it.
    Where’s Buc87?

  33. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

If Jamie’s doesn’t cut down on turnovers this year then we need to get rid of him

  34. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    YAWN!!!

  35. Chris K Says:

I’m good with the criticism. I believe Jameis will break out this year, but I thought the same last year as well. I’m tempering my expectations because of last year, but Jameis has the tools in place to succeed. If he can just get those fumbles under control and avoid forcing a play when it’s not there I think he can make that next leap finally.

  36. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    Joe,
NOW, I have to complete my name and website along with my EMAIL EACH TIME I post, what’s up with this?

  37. Gambelero Says:

Brees went 7-9 three straight years. Phillip Rivers’ Chargers are 60-68 with no more than nine wins over the last 8 years. Winston needs to make sure the Glazers are committed to winning before he makes a deal to stay.

To answer the “What more does he need?” question,” I’d say a better oline if you mean, “What more does Jameis need to reach his potential as a player?” If you mean “What more does he need to get more wins?” I’d say, “a better defense.”

  38. Bird Says:

Let’s stop with Favre comparisons. Whether favre’s defense were Good in certain years, he had 2 losing seasons in 19 year career. Only 2 seasons. So stop with those comparisons

And Joe’s. Sure there are some haters on this site. It’s not half. Do I gargle Jameis nuts like some on this site? Not even close. But he is a buc and is supported just like all buc players should be.

HE touches the ball every offensive snap. He is huge part of teams wins and losses. The push back on Jameis are the people (like one of the Joe’s only). Who goes out of their way to blame everything and everyone not named jameis. So that is what some negativity is aimed at. If Jameis fails then it will set back the bucs a decade so everyone should be rooting for him.

With all that said , I think he has his best year. No more excuses for any player

  39. DB55 Says:

Was Jameis the guy who jumped offsides at Carolina, for example? Was Jameis the guy who couldn’t stop friggin’ Brett Hundley of all poeple? Was it Jameis who gagged away six points and 75 yards on three plays to Tyrod Taylor? Joe could go on.
    –/—/————
Please do go on you’re right on the money. I’m listening

Did he miss FGs to beat NE?
Did he let Hundley, Cam and Taylor rush up his gap for the winning score?
Did he have the worst def and running game in the league?
Did he play hurt (again) the whole season?
    Did he get out coached?
Did he get an oline that could protect?
A def that could get off the field in 3 Downs?

This is fun, please do go on joe.

Just imagine for a moment the arrogance of some of the morons on this site. JW was the #1 recruit in all the land coming out of high school. But you know better, he’s an awful QB.

As a redshirt freshman he led his team to a National Championship and won the Heisman Trophy. But you know better, he’s an awful QB.

As a sophomore, he led a team that graduated a ton of starters (most to the NFL) to another ACC title and to the national semi-finals. But you know better, he’s an awful QB.

As a 20 year old, he was drafted #1 and then proceeded to start every game his rookie year while throwing for over 4K yards, 22 TD’s and 15 INT’s for a team that had the #1 pick the previous year. But you know better, he’s an awful QB.

He has shown improvements in almost every measurable QB statistic (except fumbles) year over year, including this year when he played with a hurt shoulder and on a team with the worst defense in the league. But you know better, he’s an awful QB.

This kid has won at every level and will win here which would be amazing considering the level of mediocrity this town has become known for. But you dopes know better and would rather see him leave and start over again.

It is true what they say, ignorance must truly be bliss.

  41. webster Says:

    @ bird

If you think that farve’s defenses did not have a part in only having 2 losing seasons then you are a bigger idiot than i thought. I bet you farve never had the worst defense in “his” winning seasons. Also, the patriots have a winning record in games brady did not play because its a TEAM game you moron. A qb is only 1/53 of the entire equation. Why cant you butt hurt mariota lovers understand that???

I actually agree with him, that offense is stacked. I’m still not sold on the defense but if they can’t improve to average 25 points a game on offense there’s a problem.

  44. Joel Says:

This is the same for McCoy — at what point do we quit saying he needs more players around him and actually point the finger at the player?

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

MO EXCUSES!! The time is now. Not 2 yrs from now….NOW! Koetter and Smitty..let me see yas sweat. Smitty? Come down outta that comfortable press box baby!!! Or be FIRED to Holy Hellll..!!!!

  46. Buc believer Says:

Wish the media and a lot of fans were as hard on the real problem on this team… GMC. He is a 100 million dollar mistake the Glazers should never have made. He has gotten away with way to much under performing to ignore any longer. If the media and some fans alike were even remotely intellectually honest they would admit he is a failure.

  48. webster Says:

    @ joel

Jameis has had 1 season with weapons. His first 2 years was only evans. Jesus, one year? It took the great brees 4 years to play somewhat like a starter. Thats why rivers was drafted. Winston played like a starter as a rookie. Why cant we be patient? Let jameis leave and go to another team. I bet pittsburgh would take him in a heartbeat if and when big ben retires and we would be sick watching winston win with the steelers.

  49. Blue-footed booby Says:

No webster Pittsburgh just traded up for Mason Rudolph in the 3rd round they would not pick up Winston next offseason if Roethlisberger retires in 2019. Their depth chart would include Rudolph and either Landry Jones or Josh Dobbs on their 53 man roster.

And I do applaud Kyle Brandt for stating the obvious regarding Winston. By the way, I’m pretty sure Winston’s 5th contract year is only guaranteed for injury so assuming he could pass a physical the Bucs can cut him freely and save $20 million on cap space to sign a free agent veteran (maybe Nick Foles) or draft a new QB in the 2019 offseason.

  50. mark2001 Says:

This is the year to sink or swim…as least as far as Koetter is concerned and likely his future with the Bucs. I hope he swims…but he has to be as good as the other starting QB’s in this division. Period. That won’t be easy…but it is necessary for a variety of reasons.

  51. BucEmUp Says:

Winston is still younger than Wentz, Prescott and some others. I guarantee if he had New Orleans defense last season he would have had more than 5 wins. I bet if New Orleans had our defense last season they would have had a second consecutive losing season.

FIX THE DEFENSE!!!!!!! THAT THE NUMBER ONE PROBLEM!!!!!

And the kicker….I’m leaning toward just keeping Patrick Murray….not sure how I feel about this other guy

  52. Chris K Says:

Buc believer just had to go full Donkey with his last comment, smdh! Yes Buc believer, GMC, one of our better players we’ve had over the last decade is the reason for all of our woes. 53. Issic Haggins Says:

He also had a head coach and the head coaches head influencer that really thought Martin was sufficient !!! That in if itself also means that it is the worst judgement and miscalculation by a head coach and his side kick since the 1940 s !!! Take a Hot Minute and think about that! Oh it’s real it is REAL !!

Both of these same guys and GM couldn’t even realize that this totally contorted the play calling and gave the offense literally no options in third and short. These are two really really inexcusable blunders from NFL Coaches , it truly is an unbelievable laughable situation. The casual fan has no idea how much this infected and affected Koetters ability to call a game and it was his own f ing doing .

Also more hits on the Qb, 10 to 15 percent out of proportion pass plays, more fumbles, more pressure on the Qb, more chances by any Qb,more penalties, longer learning curve to the discipline and letting the game come to a young Qb…… etc etc ………. As Stated, biggest jack wagon deal by a group of coaches since 1940.

Kyle B isn’t really aware of how inept D Martin and Staff were .Nor how really really really bad the D was . I mean really really really bad !!

So True. What is the One thing that everyone remembers about Marino? Never won a SB!.
I was talking to one of my carpenters today that is a Huge Steelers fan, he is also a Jameis fan, He said that if the Steelers had Tampa’s weapons they would be unstoppable. Yes they have Brown and Bell so I was confused and I pointed that out. He said “Yeah but you guys have Mike Evans, DJax, Chris Godwin who is gonna be a 1 I think, to do with Cam Brate, OJ Howard and Adam Humphries. And didn’t you just just draft ROJO! Kid is gonna be a Star!!! I really like the weapons you guys have”
I was taken aback that he knew our squad so well but it got me to thinking.
There ARE no excuses this yr. Schedule be damned!

    Webster

It’s painful that people like you live. Read the article. Funny when you call people moron and idiot. I could care less about mariota. He is not a buc.

Yah -qbs are 1/53 of the team. That is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Aaron Rodgers had zero defense last few years and a wide receiver was playing running back for them His oline struggled becaue of injuries which led to injuries for him. Sound familiar. Yah Rodgers doesn’t win games for packers though

The bucs have the best receiver/tight end group in nfl.

Let me ask you tough guy- do you take the whole sack all at once.

  58. Bobby M Says:

The Bucs can win with Winston, no doubt but he’s not the savior folks made him out to be. He needs too many pieces to function at a high level…..The great ones make avg players look like Pro Bowlers….Winston has proven talent that he can’t seem to maximize yet somehow Fitzpatrick goes 2-1 with same group.

No Lamarcus, Jameis Winston will never be as good as Favre was. Brett Favre had a much quicker release and elite arm strength which allowed him to take risks with throwing the football. Winston however, has a decent/good arm strength, but certainly not elite arm strength, and he definitely does not have a quick release, rather Jameis has that elongated baseball windup throwing motion which gives defenders that valuable extra second to react to break up the pass or worse.

  60. Lamarcus Says:

Jw is my favorite player but my stock is a little down. I admit. And it’s not because of him. It’s his support. He has no chance here and for all I know these media clowns probably want to see him on thier favorite team or in a big market team to help thier marketability because of thier whack Qb situation. How could Tampa media allow such intruder come criticize their Qb on national TV?? Something I might not never understand.

JW just can’t play like he wants to – might not reach his potential- because of his situational football status. I’ve seen alotta good qbs go into bad situations like Alex Smith and Stafford Marriota etc and turn out to be decent down the line and but not reach the potential they could of had. This might be JW. His nuts are being clipped and he will probably be forced into Glennon territory. JW has unlimited potential and could be one of the greatest players to ever play but we don’t work that potential. JW wants MJ status. Koetter wants Matt Ryan ceiling.

Teams were built to win like Eagles Rams Cowboys were 1 Qb away and never sorry talent wise. That’s why the trade up with future picks so their Qbs have a ready made team built to win. Don’t have to carry the team and can take baby steps

Now when The Bucs drafted JW we were 2-14. Earn the pick. The minute he was drafted he had to be starter and LEADER for a NFL team. What?? He was 20 years old….. I get the eating Ws was kinda too much but that what u get when u have to be the top dog of a losing inflated team. Uber and causing riots is on him. Now if he is 27 or 28 doing this it’s a different story.

  61. Defense Rules Says:

Uhhh folks, Joe’s chumming the water again. Notice how he started …

@Joe … “Half of Bucs fans (otherwise known as the haters and skeptics of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston) will rise as one and applaud. The other half will throw empty beer bottles at their bartender in disgust.”

Is there ANYONE out there who really believes that HALF of Bucs fans hate Jameis? For someone who professes to be Jameis’ biggest booster you sure do set him up for criticism a whole bunch.

  62. D the Bucs fan Says:

How many wins did hof qb drew Brees win b4 last season when he finally got a running game and defense. 8 or less wins not just on the qb. A couple years ago Hof qb Peyton Manning had one of the worst seasons as a qb and won a Superbowl. Team effort!

  63. Joe Says:

    Now the defense is fixed.

Is it? Joe is very much in a prove-it mode on this notion.

  64. Joe Says:

So True. What is the One thing that everyone remembers about Marino? Never won a SB!.

    Yup.

May have been the perfect quarterback. But rotten defenses did him in year after year. Few remember that. Many remember Marino never got a ring.

  65. Joe Says:

How many wins did hof qb drew Brees win b4 last season when he finally got a running game and defense. 8 or less wins not just on the qb.

Ssshhh! Don’t let facts get in the way of a good story. 🙂

  66. Trench War Says:

I remember the same excuses were not afforded to Josh Freeman. He had the worst offensive line the last two years of his campaign along with a crappy defense held together by an aging Ronde Barber. No big time receivers, a tight end who had a desire for parking lots, a different OC every single year (twice one year).

All the teams woes and losses were placed on Freeman unfairly. The guy had no supporting cast and I dare anyone to argue otherwise. He was the fallguy. ..now let’s move forward to 2018 where we have a 4th year #1 pick QB, who has had a bevy of capable stars around him with the same offensive system in place for those same 4 years, yet here we are.

Funny thing is that this time everyone has a heart for Jameis, (but not Freeman) cause let’s face it, this franchise has a lot at stake, and Jameis is holding the key. The question is how long can the reigning regime holdout for the day Jameis blossoms and can carry his team alone and outscore his own defense at will?

Jameis needs to dominate with his offense and outscore his own defense. Otherwise he may seriously start getting the Freeman treatment. I don’t want to see that again.

  67. Lamarcus Says:

Marino last game was a 62-7 ass whooping

  68. webster Says:

    @ bird

Rodgers never had the worst defense in the nfl moron. Winston just got great weapons last year and he was injured moron. When he had NO weapons he threw for over 4000 yards moron with the lounge singer as joe calls him. Rogers had weapons ie nelson cobb etc. Rodgers also plays in a division where he is by far the best qb. Minnisota and the bears qb is musical chairs. He is guaranteed 5 wins right there alone but sure its all winstons fault. You are a butt hurt mariota lover period.

  69. Chrissy g Says:

Joe your so much of a homer that if a person disagrees with you..always kissing jw’s butt

  70. webster Says:

    @ trench

[There is no evidence of that. Suggesting someone is a felon on this site can and will get you run. Tread lightly. As always, Joe is responsible for every word typed on this site. — Joe] He missed his own kids football camps. He just retired from the cfl. Not in the same ball park as winston

  71. webster Says:

No one ever blamed marino for not winning the bowl. He is a hof. It takes a team morons

  72. Ed Says:

I compare Winston to baseball hitters that have impressive Home Run stats and RBIs but strike out a lot with runners on base and hit for a low average. The yardage is great but touchdowns are more important and that’s the one area besides the sloppiness in his game he has to make happen. As many have said before, it’s Winston’s responsibility to throw more touchdowns and get this offense to score. Both the Falcons and Saints put up at least 5-6 more points per game than Bucs. That’s on Jameis. He will be considered a success when he puts the ball in the end zone. The NFL is a cruel game that a QB has no room for erro. When you can make a play you have to execute it because how many times have we seen the Bucs down at halftime, rally in the second half then lose in the 4th quarter. My hose scoring plays are there to be made in the first quarter and that’s when Jaeis misses throws, must clean up that part of his game.

  73. webster Says:

    @ joe

I dont know when i accused someone of being a felon. In sorry if u took it that way. All i was saying to trench war is comparing winston to freeman is idiotic. Freeman is tackling the same demons as martin who you bash everyday. Again freeman just retired from the cfl at the tender age of 30. Boomer esiason tried to tell us he heard freeman was not a worker. We have never heard that about winston. Who did i accuse of being a felon?

  74. JabooBuc Says:

Last year JW threw for 19 TD’s while missing 3.5 games. Had he played to his his average for all 16 games he would have thrown for 24 TD’s. That’s better than both Matt Ryan and Cam Newton.

  75. Bucsfanman Says:

AND………we’re still trotting out the excuses!!!
I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again: When your TEAM is 5-11, EVERY SINGLE PLAYER and COACH is to blame. EVERYBODY!!! That includes one Jameis Winston, QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
    You guys with the excuses!

he’s a child not a leader and has proven it many times over. josh freeman 2.0

He is the opposite of Freeman. Results on the field may be the same but Freeman was/is a quitter. Just really didn’t care for football that much, despite what the team sold the fans years ago.

    ———————

So, Joe. Are all the stories of Freeman being the first one in and last one out at One Buc completely false? How about the weight loss? Was that from soccer like he said or from something else? I’d love to know… I’d also finally love to know what happened on that plan back from London in Raheem’s last year.

  77. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston is who we have as QB so we will have to hope for the best in the here and near now. Making the playoffs is within the Bucs grasp and I refuse to bash that very real possibility by dissing the team leader. Every year the optimism builds, let it keep building.
