Mark Dominik Talks Bucs Draft & “Stealing A Little Seahawks Mentality”

April 28th, 2018

Former rock star Bucs general manager Mark Dominik had plenty to say this morning about the Buccaneers’ haul through the first three rounds of the draft.

Dominik still lives in Tampa and is a very busy man on SiriusXM NFL Radio, where he does a hell of a job.

And yes, Dominik stays connected with the Bucs. In fact, Joe saw Dominik chatting with Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer and Bucs officials at the NFL Owners Meetings last month.

Among the highlights, Dominik loved the pick of running back Ronald Jones at No. 38 overall out of the University of Southern California. Dominik said Jones was top RB on his board at that time, so he was in lock step with Jason Licht.

Regarding the cornerbacks with the next two second-rounders, Dominik was a little flummoxed by North Carolina’s M.J. Stewart going before Carlton Davis out of Auburn. But he claimed to understand the approach.

“I don’t know what’s going on with Carlton Davis; I liked him better [than Stewart and where he was drafted]. Clearly there’s a little something I’m missing on Carlton Davis,” Dominik said. “I think the physical part of what they wanted to do there; they needed to get bigger at corner. That’s why I think that’s why they went back-to-back there; they realized, you know [Vernon] Hargreaves and [Brent] Grimes, those aren’t big corners. … You play against a division with physical receivers in all capacities [on all teams]. So I think they just wanted to get bigger at corner and they wanted to be more physical at corner. And I think that’s a little bit of stealing a little Seahawks mentality of why you saw them go back-to-back corners.”

Joe thought the Seahawks line was interesting. When Lovie Smith and Jason Licht took over the Bucs in 2014, there was buzz at One Buc Palace about following a Seahawks and Panthers path to team building.

Overall, Dominik thought Licht did a masterful job maneuvering through draft trades and lining up players that fit his plan, including the raw guard Alex Cappa out of Division II Humboldt State.

Dominik said Licht and the Bucs showed they could develop Marpet out of Division III, so why not Cappa.

Mark Dominick has no clue about much involving the draft…..he proved that by his outright failures…….Mark Dominick did more to set back the Bucs since Hugh Culverhouse….and that saying something.

Who cares what Dominik has to say! He can go and run another franchise with his ineptitude.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I do agree with Dominick on Ronald Jones…..

    @Tampabaybucfan
I agree with you about RoJo!
He was the top rated back at the time we drafted him that was w/o big red warning flags.

If we wanted to get bigger why not Oliver at 6 1? Love the draft so far but puzzled by Stewart and to some extent by the Whitehead pick. Got to trust the scouts at this point. Go Bucs!

Stewart may ball out. Yall might be sleep on him. Or they like the person and the player

Hahaha. Why would you write an article about Mark Dominik’s draft thoughts. I don’t even like the thought of the rock star conversing with the Glazers.

The Buccs had a sweet opportunity to pick the best press cover corner on the board…Isaiah Oliver…and said no thankssssssss. Falcons front office I am sure went apespit we passed on him in favor of mj stewart.

  10. Josh Says:

Yeah I am pissed off we didn’t draft Oliver. Stupid mistake.

  11. Doctor Stroud Says:

Cranberries-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik was jealous that Licht adopted his platoon approach of drafting more than one player at the same position. Did he have to let it linger?

DirtStar Dominik made a proof of concept with the duo Clayborn/Bowers. In fairness…Bowers looked like a good 2nd round selection. The Buccaneer curse of 2nd round picks is real…
