McCoy Is Flummoxed By Robert Quinn Trade

March 2nd, 2018

It appears Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is among the Buccaneers faithful in disbelief that the Dolphins just agreed to trade mid-round draft picks for accomplished edge rusher Robert Quinn.

Can you blame him?

Perhaps no NFL team has a greater need for a dangerous pass rusher than the Bucs, whose edge rush was a green light for opposing quarterbacks last season. It was so bad that some fans were caught wondering why general manager Jason Licht cut Michael “Ghost” Johnson and sackless George Johnson, who was a key contributor during the Saints’ 2017 playoff run.

McCoy quickly took to Twitter to voice his frustration.

For those unfamiliar with emojis, McCoy’s emojis represent “man facepalming,” “face with rolling eyes,” and “unamused face.”

Well said, Gerald.

Look, it’s important to realize that this offseason is about who general manager Jason Licht adds to the roster, not who he passes on. So there’s no reason for a complete freakout.

But a 48-hour freakout is understandable. Quinn would have been a significant upgrade to the roster and the Bucs have plenty of room under the salary cap, and new D-line coach Brentson Buckner is supposed to be a wizard.

If Michael Bennett lands on the Seahawks roster, which is being speculated strongly, you’ll find Joe with a baseball bat and greatly in need of the services of Discount Garage Doors.

I am right there with you, Gerald!

Thanks for being candid and sharing your thoughts.

I am so disappointed and dissatisfied with Glazers/Licht.

  2. Pawel Says:

Funny to see Miami fans mad about this trade for losing draft pick on nfl website article.😂 Not everyone agrees!

  3. DanBucsFan Says:

    Welp there goes Jason Licht.

  4. Turn Off the Licht Says:

Mr. Magoo really pooched the kick here gentlemen!

  5. Jeffbuc Says:

Damn this is just getting harder and harder. Now the bucs are making me angry every week in the off-season.

  6. DanBucsFan Says:

LMAO Jeffbuc… I NEEDED A GOOD LAUGH BUD. IM with you

  7. Jeffbuc Says:

But hang on bucs fan we are so close. So close that we don’t need to trade a 4th round pick for a proven middle of his prime defensive end. I’m mean he probably would have been a rotation guy with us with al the studs we have. So it’s ticket renewing time they raised prices bucs fan are mad about that. We are all getting calls from are reps. Wouldn’t now be a great time to trade for an all pro defensive end and an all pro cornerback for minimal picks. And then I bet the reps phones would be ringing off the hook. Because us fans would have something to be excited about. I mean that would have have made everyone who is on the fence go ahead and say yeah I’m renewing my seats. Now you probably just lost a lot more season ticket holders for making them
    Even more angry

  8. cover deuce Says:

You aren’t alone, Gerald. You are definitely not alone.

  9. SteveK Says:

    Jeff Buc,

    Hell yeah! Hahahahaha

My theory is we are stockpiling our picks so we can trade for Gruden again. What a bunch of sackless fools to not go get us some players.

IMO, not paying Calais Campbell last year meant WE HAD TO make this deal for Quinn.

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off.

  10. LakeLand Says:

    Life of a Buc fan

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Well I’m glad Joe sees it. As he said it’s about who we get not who we don’t.
I don’t know about the whole 48 hr freak out. It’s been a yearlong freakout over Campbell. His name gets brought up on this board several times per day hahahaha.

  12. Greecosuave Says:

Miami overpaid for this guy. We need the draft picks anyway.

If you could trade two picks for Quinn to get a few years out of him than you can trade for the first round pick. Get Chubb, Barkely or whoever. It’s was for Expensive for Quinn.

  13. BucTrooper Says:

I know people have their complaints about GMC, but one thing can’t be denied: the Bucs front office (all of them) have hung him out to dry his entire career and he has kept his mouth shut for a almost a DECADE. He never once asked for a trade. He never once called out the GM. He never once Vague-booked a status update… I think his commentary is actually LONG overdue.

I think this is why he was never viewed as the “vocal leader.” A vocal leader actually has to speak. He never did. Literally. He never opened his mouth, until now. I’m glad he did. His move should be to pull JW aside and tell him to go into the GM and say they need defensive help. Make it a 2-front lobbying effort.

  14. DB55 Says:

Lol, why wouldn’t Bennet go to NE? Him and his brother. Lol

    You’re a funny guy joe

DEMAND A TRADE GERALD!!!! Do put up with this!!!

  15. adam from ny Says:

wow licht didn’t do his job!!!…too many beers and late nights at fantasyland behind the stadium

  16. Bobby M. Says:

Licht should dive into his pool….right after it’s been drained. He’s got no plan

  17. JimmyJack Says:

So Bobby M. It had to be Robert Quinn or bust for you?

  18. DBS Says:

Well word is the Browns are willing to deal their 1st round pick. Just how desperate is Licht getting ??

  19. ManzielMadness Says:

If we go back to Darryl tapp and William Clarke manning the edges, there won’t be enough beer in tampa for me.

  20. denjoe Says:

    Keep it up Gerald!!!

  21. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    You called Lakeland? lol..

Now you know why I picked my handle here..it truly is Life Of A Buc Fan…yep…

Now let’s see if we can get Bennett here or I am done for awhile…

  22. WutdaBucisthis Says:

This isn’t the end but Damn Licht. Please have somee master plan. Please so many lifers are losing hope. Bet most of your core fans are over 30, Me…45 are the ones who support the team with sea tix every year. Bet that overall no. goes down. This team doesn’t deserve us…not like this.

  23. Pelbuc Says:

Licht has shown for years he’s clueless and now he’s scared to pull the trigger bc of his prior flops MJ, Baker….Now he’ll have to overpay and give up too many draft picks for any other trade. Stupid is what stupid does!

  24. Waterboy Says:

Licht is a 1-dimensional GM, decent in the draft but that’s it.

  25. denjoe Says:

Other than LB,WR and TE’s we need help at every position including kicker! and now he’s p#ssing off the players that are left on the team! Kwon’s been out there recruiting too!

  26. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    Dear Mr. Licht,

I’ll say it again… this time – do something..

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  27. Guzziep Says:

NO SURPRISE HERE, THE BUCS AREN’T ALLOWED TO HAVE NICE THINGS

  28. Guzziep Says:

Cleveland South, more like Tampa North

  29. GrudenForPresident Says:

Expensive? It was a 4,the Rd pick that’s nothing for proven pass rush. Fools man I swear. Tell me, who other then Kwon which was Lovie’s pick has Licht drafted in the 4th that’s worth a crap? Go Ahead I’ll wait.

  30. adam from ny Says:

licht blew it…his job is to be on top of all possibilities to build the
d line…this should not have slipped by him…it is his job to hound every other gm about potential loose ends freeing up at any given momen, so to round out our sorry line…if he looks like a meat head – he must think like a meat head…give the man a beer!

  31. adam from ny Says:

sorry for all the typos joeski

  32. adam from ny Says:

  33. Guzziep Says:

    Is it 2019 yet?

  34. Duke Says:

I think it’s time for Gerald McCoy to show some real leadership and openly and privately call out bus ownership and management. He has zero to lose . In fact, the worst outcome for him is probably also the best one. They trade him.
If they do, He wins. If they get him help, He wins. C’mon Gerald it’s time to be a leader.

  35. mike Says:

    Clean House

  36. FortMyersDave Says:

I hate to say it but same old Bucs….. Licht has not changed he looks to have made a mistake. Of course you have to ask why the Rams let the guy go for so little? Damaged goods? If the Bucs took him you could probably bet he’d end up on the IR before long, seems like Licht has that kind of luck with the FA/trade market……. Fans would love an explanation but I doubt if Licht will give one…..

  37. Eric Says:

This is the exact reason why I am not renewing my season passes I’m sick and tired of finishing in the top 5 of cap space available!! You telling me that we are depending on Robert Ayers when we could have had Robert Quinn for a 4th round pick!

  38. darin Says:

    Eric
I feel yoir pain. This one I cant grasp. Ive got some emojis too about licht. Ive gota draw them up first tho. What a travashamockery licht pulled.

  39. Bnomo Says:

    Hey, go Chucky.

  40. Destinjohnny Says:

    Jason is a scout not
    A gm

  41. Upthegut Says:

Time to turn out the Licht.
    Very disappointing.

  42. BucEmUp Says:

    D ONT want Bennett

  43. Alan Says:

I have been a fan of this team going on 23 years now it’s really disgusting to see how pathetic this franchise is ran. We never get a head coach with a history in this league of winning. We can’t get players to wanna play here even though we have great weather and no state tax. We finally got a quarterback that’s arguably the best quarterback this franchise ever had under center. And we have no coach that can make him better. Gerald mccoy is one of the best defenses tackles in the last 10 years and we completely wasted his career by not putting anyone around him to make him more successful and we paid him a lot of money and never invested the resources around him. I currently live in Charlotte North Carolina I had my 1st son about 2 weeks ago and i dont want him to be a bucs fan I don’t want him to suffer like I have. As much as I hate the panthers I’d rather see him where about stupid cat hat and Jersey then root for this pathetic team

  44. Bird Says:

Someone made a good point yesterday. The Rams held the power on this trade and can or cannot reach out to or speak to whatever team they want.

They know Quinn can ball (but have cap issues) so they didn’t want him in NFC anymore so they traded to afc team where more likely than not they would only potentially play against him in super bowl.

  45. Bird Says:

It will be very upsetting if they don’t get a top tier player or two which there are available in free agency on offensive line. (Norwell and/or Jensen)

Need to get that db free agent too

  46. The Buc Realist Says:

trade GMC for picks!!!!!!!!!! If an injured DE can get a 4th and a 6th (swapped?) the Bucs could at least get a second this year and a second next year!!!!!!!!! Build a D-line!!!!!! Don’t duct tape it together!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  47. John meeks Says:

I am really wandering what the heck is going on ,do they even want to win?our GM let’s a proven pass rusher slip by for those draft picks?I’m damn near speechless!

  48. old time buc Says:

Realist, you might have something but even if we did get two seconds or something like that I don’t think L knows how to draft well after the first round and even there he acts scared all the time. Kind of like some politicians we have.

  49. old time buc Says:

And by the way thanks for finally standing up and saying something Gerald. We need more of that.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So now it has come to this???

Every move the Bucs do not make, we’re all going to whine about it?

Sheesh. That’s going to make for a very crappy off season around here.

I understand Gerald wishing they would bring in some talent to help him, but neither he, nor us, know what Jason Licht has planned.

You are all assuming he’s doing nothing. MAYBE he has a better option in mind???? Stop assuming the worst, crybabies.

  51. Common sense kid Says:

So do we know Jason Licht didn’t make a move or are we all just assuming? I love how most of you don’t seem to take into consideration that maybe they didn’t want to come to Tampa. I’ve heard for a year the crying about Campbell even though we have no clue he would have come here. Now ever good player that gets traded you all cry even though we don’t know what is really happening behind the scenes, who Jason is trying to get etc. At the end of the day Tampa is not high on most FA list, partly because we have the worst fans in the league.

  52. Joe Says:

So do we know Jason Licht didn’t make a move or are we all just assuming?

There is nothing to assume. Quinn got traded to the Dolphins. No way to spin that.

Agree with on Campbell but a trade is a trade. The NFL is not MLB. There are no no-trade clauses. Teams don’t have to get permission from a player to ship him out.

  53. John meeks Says:

Looks like our GM is doing something bonzai, he is sitting on his ass watching pass rushers get away.but that’s ok,let’s just give him a pass and believe he is gonna fix this dline with his magic wand!get the hell out of here with your happy to be average ass!

  54. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    Actually….@Joe,

There are “no trade” clauses included for some, granted very very few, and that player needs to have massive leverage already to have it included by their agent.

    See Drew Brees.

Few other QB’s have had it also. See Peyton Manning once he signed with Elway in Denver. usually just QB’s.

    Go Bucs!

  55. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t be mad Fellow swahbucklers. You see to truly be a sustained winner in the NFl, your organization has to have grit, determination and a will..committment to winning. And we simply have not shown that. We Bucs luv being bottom feeders. Bringing up the rear. At least this year I’m starting to see more dismayed Buc fans. Asking whats wrong with this franchise. If our Bucs don’t finish at least 8-8 this upcoming season..Look for a clean sweep of staff in the organization. Hell who knows? The Glazers just might wake up and smell the coffee after next season!

  56. ZK Says:

McCoy,you should go into Jason.L office and demand a trade!!!

  57. Owlykat Says:

Now are you seeing the truth that Licht is the Culprit who sunk our last season and despite the pressure on him is already showing he hasn’t changed one iota. He still thinks he is a genius who knows far more than anyone else. He needs a mental evaluation for this latest stupidity. Now you see why as simply as a scout he bounced around the league because other teams realized what a bust he was. Our dumb owners made a huge error promoting him to a GM with no history of success at that level and plenty of red flags about even his ability as a scout. If he had been any good don’t you think the Patriots would have kept him? The Brothers could have done better with just a draft magazine and no GM. They could have built up the lines and found a great RB last year and anybody would have picked Jameis in the first round. Dump Loser Licht now!

  58. Not there yet Says:

Please go demand a trade Gmc. Media fans and everyone else has a say but yeasome of you on here running your mouths should go into your bosses office and complain about something they didn’t do to help you out and see how that works out. He makes millions shut up and do what your told. Fans complain because that’s all we can do, think he looks stupid for being the only player with something to say about a trade of one guy. He’s not the best pass rusher in the league by any stretch and McCoy your no longer the best player on this defense.

  59. Capt.Tim Says:

A proven pass rusher was just traded for a 4th round pick

And the Bucs, a team with the leagies worst pass rush, did not get him
The Bucs- a team that has the most money in the NFC, – did not get him
The Bucs- a team with all of its draft picks to trade- did not get him.
The Bucs- a team that has SUCKED for almost twenty years- did not get him

They dont care. The Bucs are a business. Spend only what they must, and enjoy the profits. Screw the fans.

Yes, it was a trade. And the Rams can pick their trade partner.
    But dont be stupid
They pick the partner, that gives them the best deal. Does anyone really believe that the Rams kept this deal a secret- to keep from getting a better offer ????
Does anyony really believe that the Rams didnt trade Quinnto the Bucs, because they thought it would suddenly make the Bucs a powerhouse???
    Lmao.

They didnt trade Quinn to the Bucs, because the Bucs didnt offer anything for him.
And that tells you right there, that this team doesn’t care about winning.
Good DEs very raely hit the market. Campbell last year, Quinn this year.
If this team really wanted to win- they would have made the Ramd an offer they couldnt refuse
Our 2nd round pick? You bet!! Better to have a proven comodity, than a tisky rookie
    Especially the way we draft.

Bucs didnt get him, because they didnt want to pay a good DE, the appropriate salary.
    Money. Bottom line

  60. Capt.Tim Says:

Sorry about the mis-spellings. Big fingers, little screen.
Wish we had an edit option

  61. NFLNut Says:

    ^ Chill out bro.

The Rams may not have wanted to trade him within the conference and demanded a 3rd rounder from the Bucs … and the Bucs may feel they’d rather trade a 6th for Michael Bennett and use that 3rd on a DT like Derrick Nnandi or an RB like Rashaad Penny or a strong safety like DeShone Elliott, etc … missing on Quinn is what it is … chill out.

  62. NFLNut Says:

Heck, Licht may simply rather have a rookie 3rd round DE like Chad Thomas or someone and the ability to use the money Quinn would have made to sign a starting CB like Kyle Fuller or SS like Eric Reid than ONLY having Quinn.

    Ya’ll need to calm down.

  63. Hodad Says:

Shut up McCoy! You’ve been a loser since you’ve been here, now you want to be G.M.? Get off twitter, go back to your bat cave, and play superhero. Better yet, how about trying to make yourself better so you can finally make a play when it counts for change.

  64. The Anomaly Says:

@ Hodad – calm down. The guy is a stud DT. His coach and GM suck. His owners suck. His QB is turnover machine. Lots of issues for the Bucs. Gmac isn’t one of them. Frankly, I’m concerned about a child on the internet without parental supervision. Does your mom know you are using her computer?

  65. SOEbuc Says:

Glazer kids and their GMs once again come through with a good non-trade option. Looking like Stuart Sternburg when they do this stupid, cheap crap.

  66. Genericcialisonline Says:

Everyone is debating whether Suh can play beside my McCoy.I would let Suh have McCoy”s position and let McCoy play as a defensive end similar to Reggie White or Peppers. Let him float along the line on early downs.Spence isnt a run stopper by any means and i have more faith in McCoy producing in 1 on 1 match ups then any defensive end we currently have. I”ve literally never seen a team afraid to have too much talent on the d-line like i have with the Bucs. All we hear about is how McCoy is getting double teamed.put him 1 on 1 on the outside and let him loose. He cant be worse then Gholston or Ayers and i would bet he puts up better numbers then Spence AND McCoy can actually stop the run.
