Godwin To Play In Clutch Moments

November 25th, 2017

He’s earned it.

Joe has already written about how rookie wide receiver Chris Godwin ought to get more playing time.

In his first NFL start two weeks ago for suspended Mike Evans, Godwin sure didn’t embarrass himself. And last week in the game-winning drive at Miami, Godwin caught two clutch passes (14 and 24 yards) to set up the game-winning field goal.

Friday, Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken noted that because of the way Godwin played against the Jets and at Miami, look for Godwin to be on the field when the Bucs need to move the ball late.

“Opportunities are going to come up more for Chris when we are down or in a two-minute attack situation because we are going to be rotating guys more frequently,” Monken said. “We have our starters. We have DeSean [Jackson] and Mike [Evans] on the outside and Chris has also worked inside a little bit with Hump (Adam Humphries) so we have our guys. So, when does that come up? That comes up more frequently as you get in the game and guys are coming in and out. We’re still trying to find ways to get Chris more involved because Chris has continued to develop and continued to improve each week.”

Until he shows he cannot play, Joe would move Godwin up to the No. 3 receiver slot. Then again, Adam Humphries does lead the team in YAC (which might lead the Bucs to getting him on the field more).

Joe thinks Godwin, if the last two games are any indication, is going to be a good one.

I agree. We have Godwin, Evans, Hump, Jackson, Brate and Howard. Why can’t DK get more creative with this talented group? Been scratching my disappointed head all season.

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I wish we had this crush of talented players trying to desperately get on the field in our other position groups. Wouldn’t it be nice if our OL had the same competition as our receivers…and we haven’t even mentioned TE’s…Brate and OJ.

What if it was hard to get on the field as a DL? Gotta say we do have some pretty good competition at LB when they’re all healthy.

  3. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Unless DK opens up the playbook It won’t matter who we have at Wr and TE. What we really need is a RB and help on the OL

This will b one of many reasons koetters job will b on the line. He has the players n don’t know how to use them. Now is the time to put all ur best players on the field at the same time n throw the kitchen sink at defenses. Godwin’s been consistent n clutch so y wait until we’re behind to put him in. Just think how creative bellicheat n Sean Peyton will get with our offense. I watched the pitt panthers get creative n throw everything they had to beat the hurricanes yesterday. Not once did they get conservative once ahead. I’m disappointed in koetter he looks lost as if he’s given up. Ur thoughts

  5. IndyBucsFan Says:

Personally I think he should move in front of Hump on the depth chart. Hump has dropped waaaay too many balls this year and has not looked as consistent as years past.

  6. Roy T. Buford Says:

With all the talent at WR and TE, why is it no one fears the Bucs passing attack? Playcalling, predictability, lack of originality. This is another point blank question I wish the media would ask Dirk: Don’t you think you’re kind of over your head in being both HC and play caller?

  7. Roy T. Buford Says:

If you remember, @dmatt….Sean Payton already played our offense like a banjo…in the blow out loss a few weeks back in NO. Frustrated our two O team captains so much they lost their cool.

Earlier in the year, Belicheat did just that…with worst D in the league the Bucs couldn’t score at home.

    Amazing.

  8. Roy T. Buford Says:

If I recall correctly, Godwin is the one who got out here early, signed a lease on an apartment to keep his head clear even though the Bucs would pay for training camp lodging…has his girlfriend (met her during a practice) working out with him…nice looking couple, and he seems like a fine young man. A future team captain easily…if he can continue to keep his performance curve climbing.

  9. Buc50 Says:

To me he was the number 3 guy coming out of camp. He impressed me that much in preseason.

  10. dmatt Says:

Roy t Buford, I remember Vikings, cardinals n bills playing us like a banjo also. I’m a firm believer that our problem exist with bad coaching. Case in point…MEvans has a history of anticipating a hit n or falling to the ground prematurely. He doesn’t possess that killer instinct such as Antonio brown, the falcons Julio Jones n sanu, or Jarvis Landry…they all make plays after the catch. I would make MEvans a tightend n put Godwin in his place. If Godwin is given the opportunity to start he, will shine, hes disciplined, has a level head, n knows how to get open n fight for yards. Can someone please tell me what have MEvans done for us lately other than sit out to prove my theory about Godwin.

  11. Roy T. Buford Says:

@dmatt..agree with most all. Glad to hear shared views on Evans for his heart. I see him staying as #1 WR due to size with Godwin as #2. I’d not be surprised to see a holdout from Evans in the future. They are in talks but I think he has a better opinion of himself than his team and fans. Evans to me is a poor leader and team mate. I got lambasted every time I say it but ’tis true.

  12. DB55 Says:

Adam Humphries does lead the team in YAC (which might lead the Bucs to getting him on the field more).

Do you have a breakdown per player? Or a link? I would have guessed OJ or Brate. Lmk ty sirs.

  13. Bill Byrne Says:

With all our wide receiver talent I am disappointed that Brate and Howard have not been targets on a consistant basis. Sometimes the argument that a team can have too much talent has some merit. Too bad the Bucs do not have a quarterback to get them the ball this year!!!

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

Koetter needs to let Monken call plays. Godwin is better than DJax. Bye Dirk.

  15. Capt. Blighe Says:

They try to rotate to many people we don’t have that much depth. Put your best guys on the field and roll with it unless there is a good reason for them to come off. We even rotate safety’s, think John Lynch or Sapp or Brooks shared snaps with somebody. DJax or Godwin she be in the slot. The reason Hump has the most YAC is because he runs all those screens.
