Monken: End The “Duress”

September 28th, 2017

OC speaks

Offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Monken was talking all things Bucs offense today.

Of course, the subject of interceptions came up, since America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, threw three last Sunday.

Monken wasn’t making excuses, but he was clear that Jameis was throwing far too often “under duress.”

You want to stop the duress? Run the darn football successfully, Monken said.

The Bucs turned around and handed the ball off eight times Sunday. That’s a stunningly low number. One could say a big reason was Jameis’ interceptions forcing the Bucs into too many passing situations in a lopsided game. So there’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation here.

Regardless, at home, against a Giants team allowing more than 150 yards per game rushing through three losses, it’s time the Bucs find their running game. The rush attack was ok against Chicago, which has a better front-7 than the Giants.

The excuses are out the window this Sunday.

Wanna stop the QB duress? Then block the Defense from the other side. Its really simple. Our Line can and does ocassionally get..Over Powered. Its makes me laugh that many Buc fans think the opposition is just gonna lie down and watch Jameis throw beautiful spirals to his receivers. Ruck up Bucs…Where..is Your.. O line Toughness?

Agree with sorry…barber looked solid when he got the opportunity.

The excuses were over when the year started. No more of ” But all we need is”? That crap went out the window when Winston was drafted. He was the answer remember? Now it’s every other position. No more age. No more but he only had X amount of. The excuses are done period.

It’s strange how the past 3 seasons have played out…load a ton onto Jaboo’s shoulders, fail, then dial back the burden with better game-management-planning. I’m not sure, with all of that, this administration simply underestimated the value of a credible running game…much less a dangerous one.

@DBS….you nailed it…and i’ll take it a step further….all the excuses really went out the door once lovie was shown the door…once dirk was hired and the crowds cheered the excuses went bye bye….GET IT DONE!!!…GO BUCS!!!

Hmmm, let’s see, they didn’t draft any O-Lineman, they didn’t draft a RB until the 5th round (then waived him). They didn’t sign an O-Lineman during free agency, they didn’t sign a new RB during free agency. So now Jameis is throwing far too much under duress. SMH

@LakelandBuc, they drafted + signed Pamphile, Marpet, Smith, Sweezy, Benenoch, Hawley, Evan Smith in the 4 years since Licht arrived, and that’s just the guys that are still here and have played some snaps, doesn’t include developmental players, some guys who didn’t work out, and Mankins who retired. In other words, lack of attention to the OL does not seem like a problem for the bucs.

Here’s an idea… don’t ALWAYS run up the gut on first day if the game is close. Instead, try this, try running a play action pass every now and again. Here’s another idea, on 3rd and 1, don’t line-up in shotgun, give the appearance that you *might* run the ball and the defense has to play the play differently. Basically mix it up and stop being ultra predictable, in particular on early downs. For example you just run it up the gut on every first down and the defense figures that out and has 11 people in the box, well don’t run it anyways just to prove you’re a tough guy, change the play.

As a 30-year Madden veteran I’m glad I could help.

@Joe (previous article) … “Of course, the Bucs have little option but for Jameis to throw early and often because the Bucs simply have no run game that would even frighten a five-year-old.”

Good to see that you’re flexible enough to change your mind Joe. Unless of course you consider the Giants’ OLine to be worse than a group of 5-year-olds.

I’m praying for the Douggernaut to come back and run like 2015
