Licht: Grimes Will Rest Till Next Week

August 9th, 2017

Bucs GM Jason Licht talks Brent Grimes

Joe’s wildest 2017 Bucs fantasies that don’t include cheerleaders were dashed for about 30 seconds this morning.

Brent Grimes crumpled to the turf late in practice while covering a receiver.

Trainers surrounded him and they had gloves on. Grimes wasn’t getting up or trying to. Thankfully, it was just a very nasty bloody cut of his shin.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio this afternoon, general manager Jason Licht said it was a tense moment for him but Grimes should be just fine. Licht said Grimes got stitches and will rest for three or four days to heal up.

That means the Bucs’ No. 1 cornerback will get the night off in the preseason opener at Cincinnati. What a huge opportunity for second-year cornerback Ryan Smith, who didn’t get a defensive snap last season and is pegged as the first backup outside cornerback.

With cornerback Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah out with a fresh knee injury, it also could be a showcase night for veteran Robert McClain and Javien Elliott.

Joe’s almost glad Grimes will miss Friday’s game. Really no reason to put him at risk at this time of year.

#29, let’s see what you got. Start swinging that stick!

  2. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Heard something today i thought was funny and had to share:

*They were talking about President ump and North Korea’s exchange, someone was talking about it and i quote, “Speak softly and carry a big stick in the words of Teddy Roosevelt.”

And I was like no, those are the words of DIRK KOETTER!

    #StickCarriers

  3. Jaykpatel Says:

Let Grimes sit for all of preseason! (Over-reaction warning)

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

    Agree 100% Joe.
I would like to see Desean Jackson, Gerald McCoy, Robert Ayers, and acouple others limited to 10 snaps a game or less.

These Vets have nothing to prove- and there’s no reason risking them getting hurt by some over Zealous UFA , whos playing past the whistle!

  5. teacherman777 Says:

Rest Well Spiderman. Best CB in the league!

We gotta get him in the Pro Bowl this season!

    Vote for the guy!

  6. OneBucPerson Says:

With the potential long recovery for Jude I’d love it if JL signed one of the good veteran CBs available like Tramaine Brock, Perrish Cox, Tracy Porter, or Leodis McKelvin. And while in the discussion of FAs to add to boost our depth I can’t help but notice a certain Mr. Jeremy Zuttah just got cut by the 49ers. Any thoughts Joe?

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Let him rest the entire preseason. Regardless of what Joe says the Bucs have ZERO depth at corner so they need to play people to see if I’m wrong or if Joe is right. I’m hoping that Joe is seeing something in practice that makes him make such an amazingly bold statement, like our backup corners aren’t a dumpster fire that wouldn’t make any other roster in the NFL, that would be my opinion based on the play I’ve seen.

  8. Maze Says:

Best athlete on the team. What a signing by Mr. Licht

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Man watching this Carolina game, McCaffery looks much smaller than I thought he was. He measured out with nearly the same combine stats as Charles Sims, but is like 30 pounds lighter. I still think McCaffery is a massive overreach and I hope I’m right, would love for him to be a bust who can’t stay healthy.

Benjamin just made nice catch – any talk of weight issues seems to be unjustified, he looks pretty slim. I would hate for KB to be back to his rookie self – a big WR like that kills the undersized Bucs corners.

  10. El_Buc941 Says:

I honestly think Winston and Jackson along with Evans should be the only ones play preseason song with the only (limited snaps.) and on the defense only vets should be VH3,McCoy, Ayers,Kwon, lavonte, and tandy

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe, with Marpet out for a couple days, have you seen Hawley practice? Is he fully healthy now?

If he is, his strength should be back up. He should get overpowered. If he still has healthy issues, then it won’t be.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

McCaffrey is still in the game well into the 2nd quarter, wow, shocked that is the case. He looks solid, like a kid with talent, but nothing really stands out so far. Watching him more he actually reminds me a bit of Warrick Dunn – he doesn’t probably have the same suddenness, but the way he knows how to ball himself up and get down before he gets blown-up on a hit, that just reminds of Dunn and how he played forever in the NFL (Dunn is #18 all time in yards from scrimmage, ahead of Bettis, yet Dunn gets zero respect). Mike Shula somehow still being in the league is amazing enough, but I wonder if Shula showed McCaffrey tape of Dunn and how he got down – because in college I saw McCaffrey running straight up most of the time, and in the NFL if he does that, he’ll be on IR by week 3.

More shocking is I wanted to see what was up with Russell Shepard and I found this in the local paper “You won’t see much from Kelvin Benjamin, Devin Funchess, or Russell Shepard tonight. The Panthers will likely sit most of the guys that are solidified on the depth chart.” Wow, Shep already locked up his spot on the roster, as a receiver? He must be having a good camp. I hate we lost him, he was a special teams ace and to my eye he was the only WR outside of Evans that stood out in a positive manner.

  13. Steve Says:

Almost wish they would rest the entire starting offense against the thugs on the Cincinnati Bengals defense. Berfect is already hitting his own teammate’s low. Whould hate to loose a starter for amount of time due to a dirty hit from those guys.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t worry Rod. The Panthers may have our former #5 and start him. Meanwhile, everybody knows we are poised to make a run and wants to play here. Now we got Washington’s #1 to be our #2. I’ll gladly take that trade off.

I’m looking forward to seeing McCaffenery myself here before bed. I wouldn’t worry too much about him. That was a very strange pick to me because he doesn’t seem to fit their power run scheme. I would guess they have plays to use him in and wouldn’t have to reinvent their defense but that’s no guarantee………And if Carolina doesn’t have a system already in place to use the guy he probably won’t stay healthy long enough for when we have to face the stink ass panthers

  15. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Shep would certainly be our #4 or #5 guy this year , but also a special teams ace, he’s a bigger loss than people think. Last year he was absolutely the #2 WR on the team, he outperformed Hump every time he was on the field – at least to my eye that was the case. Not a huge huge loss, but it’s a bigger loss than the non-issue a lot of fans think, in particular if it helps Carolina.

I’m not too worried about McCaffrey, or at least I wasn’t since I was sure he’d get hurt, but I hate he is balling up on tackles and getting down, he didn’t do that on the college tape I saw. If he stays healthy he’ll help them. Also remember that power running game that Mike Shula is doing is the same one he did in Tampa – sure it’s a bit more modern, but only a bit, and Warrick Dunn was the lead guy here. Being big in a power running game isn’t always an issue. In Tampa you had both Dunn and Alstott to really mix it up, but Dunn could run up inside all the time because again he knew how to take a hit and always had that knack for balling up and never getting blown up.

  16. JimmyJack Says:

Rod-Good words man. I did neglect the impact he had on ST. And I called him our #5 based on where he was slotted to begin the season when we are healthy.

And I don’t mind Hump being behind him at #3 because Hump was invaluable to us as a chains mover.

Regarding Carolina, Cam Newton is going downhill fast because of injury and taking the team down with him……It’s freaking amazing they stayed with Derek Anderson as backup.

  17. T"CHALLA Says:

IF WE HAD DRAFTED A CORNER GRIMES REPLACEMENT WOULD BE ON THE ROSTER ALL READY. WHAT”S THE PURPOSE OF OTA” S MINI CAMPS AND PRE SEASON IF WE ARE EXPECTING SOMEONE TO JOIN THE TEAM AT THIS LATE DATE AND BE A CONTRIBUTOR SURELY THEIR IS SOMEONE IN CAMP WHO CAN SERVE AS AS REPLACEMENT UNTIL THE 1ST REGULAR SEASON GAME .

  18. T"CHALLA Says:

WE NEED A HOME RUN RUNNING BACK. SHOULD HAVE DRAFTED MARLON MACK E WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 2018 DRAFT TO EITHER PICK CHUBB FROM GEORGIA OR HOPE GUICE FROM LSU FALLS INTO OUR LAP ALA O.J. HOWARD

  19. Joe Says:

IF WE HAD DRAFTED A CORNER GRIMES REPLACEMENT WOULD BE ON THE ROSTER ALL READY.

That fellow’s name is Vernon Hargreaves.

  20. Jim Says:

I often wonder if the Grimes hate is really just about fans that can’t stand that Miko actually speaks her mind and doesn’t care what other people, or organizations think.

  21. Wausa Says:

Let’s hope the corners stay healthy this year.
I would expect the following 5 will be the only ones on the roster:

    Grimes
    Hargreaves
    Elliott
    McClain
    Smith

The Bucs have almost pushed themselves into a corner of having to draft a corner on day 1 or 2 next year unless Smith takes a huge jump this year.
