Movin’ Jameis

November 8th, 2016
A coming pattern?

A coming pattern?

Not that long ago, near the end of October in fact, Joe wrote the Bucs should use America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, on rollouts more.

Per the numbers, Jameis is fantastic when outside the pocket and is damned good when pressured.

Therefore, Joe argued, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter should play to Jameis’ strengths. If a guy is better outside the pocket, get him outside the pocket. This isn’t rocket science.

It seems like Koetter is beginning to see the light, per his own words from his presser yesterday at One Buc Palace, when talking about Jameis’ success outside the pocket.

“He’s better at that than I would have thought coming out of college,” Koetter said. “I think pretty much everybody thought in college that he was primarily a pocket passer. And we still have work to do in that area. But our ‘bootleg game,’ for lack of a better term, the stuff where we do get him on the perimeter, from an efficiency standpoint, those plays have been efficient. As an offensive coach, you’re going to continue to run plays that are efficient for you.”

Bravo. And nothing better than to build the confidence of your young signal-caller like that.

It’s really weird about Jameis. He struggles in the pocket when not under pressure but thrives when defenses throw the kitchen sink at him and chase him.

Does that mean Head Coach Koetter does not “trust” his offensive tackles!!!!!!

    What Tackles Realist What Tackles

    Joe,

Just like with any small success in bucville we as fans may have gave the o line too much credit for being a solid unit. I don’t want to hear they miss the old washed up mankins his position replacement is one of the only bright spots on the line. And I have read in several places that Gos had just as much to do with development of the young guys if not more than the washed up mankins did. Did we give Warhop to much credit or did we give the players too much credit? Dotson has outright SUCKED… Dotson has never been good but too many fans mistake popularity for actual good football players see your bromance GMC his nice guy bs and popularity has long surpassed his production. we definitely gave the offensive line too much credit. D. Smith is out of position. It’s not far off but they need to send Dotson packing at the earliest opportunity and first round LT would not be a bad thing. Even with ALL the holes at RB, WR, TE

I wonder WHY you call Mr. J. Winston is America’s qb?.. M.M. seems to have better stats so did bucs draft the right guy?

  5. JAB83 Says:

HMMMMM, I think I remember someone stating this fact before it was news.

Hate to say it but the talent evaluation process of this organization still leaves A LOT TO BE DESIRED…

Just as obvious as miss using your QBs skills is THE MISS USE OF THE LINEBACKERS on this team…

NOAH SPENCE Should be brought in as a 5TH lineman and moved all over the line if we are not gonna let our LBs help out the rush…

Also, one other not so glaring fact…. OUR KICKER GOT LINED UP LAST WEEK… His kicks our starting to come off real clean and have that sound… SO WE SHOULD HAVE AN ADVANTAGE IN THE KICKING GAME THE SECOND HALF….

For all you people who don’t think the highest scoring position on a football team is worth a high draft choice… YOUR GONNA START TO SEE WHY IT ABSOLUTELY IS… Your FRANCHISE KICKER, only struggled for half a season. AND WILL WIN YOU GAMES LATE IN THE SEASON WHEN THE RUBBER MEETS THE ASPHALT.

  6. Tampa Tony Says:

@ben- what stats are better? MM has more passing yards but they have the same amount of TD’s this year. Both are mistake prone young QB’s unless you have a predetermined bias I can’t see how anyone can say one is better than the other after a season and a half

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    ben

I guess you missed the fact that mariota SINGLE handily LOST the game Sunday with his fumbles and pick 6 but hell let’s not let facts get in the way of your pathetic agenda… America’s Quarterback Jameis Winston will be winning super bowls and your boyMariaot will get hurt be out of the league within 3 years but ehll at least he will last 1 year longer than Glennon will.

  8. astrobuc Says:

@Ben. The stats this year are almost identical. Marita has played in one more game.
Both guys are learning and growing, I personally like JW better for his leadership.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

@tmaxcon … “D. Smith is out of position.” Couldn’t agree more. Thought that maybe he’d regressed some this year (footwork not that good and lacks quickness for a LT). But now think it’s because he’s got a full year on tape and everybody in the league now knows his weaknesses. Convinced now that he’d make a much better Guard, but of course that’d leave us needing a LT (still wish we’d drafted Laremy Tunsil). Dotson needs to be replaced, no question, but he’d make a decent backup. Maybe slide Pamphile over to RT? (He seems pretty adaptable, but he’s not a LT). And say what you want about Mankins, but the OLine looked a lot better last year with him out there (both Marpet and D. Smith gave him lots of credit for all the heads-up guidance he gave them prior to each play).

  10. Chris Says:

TMax your hatred for MM and Glennon is comical. MM , three years? Cmon, you’re brighter than that aren’t you? Three years? Despite the last game, he has better stats than last year. And news for you, the Titans are far closer to a playoff team than we are. You’re getting to be a joke with the hatred.

  11. For Better or Worse BucsFan Says:

@ben Mariota has amassed these stats while also playing 1 more game. The Titans haven’t had their bye yet, not until week 13 can we count their stat line even.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    Chris

chris not hating on mariota at all. look at his injury history and playing style. His nfl life expectancy given those two factors is not very long. Again, no hate. I don’t hate glennon either just hate his style of play, leadership ability and demeanor. not the guy I want leading my team.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    Defense Rules

I really like D. Smith and think / hope he can be a star for a long time but not at LT. I like his chemistry with jameis some funny social media posts together.

  14. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The problem with rollouts is half the field is gone from the passing game so you have to choose wisely when you will do them. QB can get hurt pretty easily there as well. For now, I think a short passing game with occasional forays to the seam 20 yards downfield is our best option.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can someone fill me in why Joe calls Jameis “America’s Quarterback”? It’s been a while and I can’t recall the reason.

I guess once he is labeled this way it will be difficult for Joe to ever remove the label.

  16. Chucklehead & The Slumpbusters Says:

    Chris

” And news for you, the Titans are far closer to a playoff team than we are. You’re getting to be a joke with the hatred.”

Look what you wrote…. you are right, the Titans as a team are a lot closer than we are. Kind of makes sense that a quarterback will be able to play better if his teammates ard doing their jobs well. Winston hasnt had that luxudy yet. His only weapon is Evans and Martin when healthy Like I keep saying, Bucs offense scored 28 last week. If we had our old D with Brooks and Sapp we would be 6 – 2 or better right now. We cant keep letting scrubs have career days against our D. Fix the D, and it opens up a world of possibilities to Jameis and our offense. Fix the D and we play football the way we want to. And we arent constantly playing catch up.

  17. Bucsfan951 Says:

Tmax for gm… I mean, he knows everything. Just ask him!

  18. 813bucboi Says:

joe says,” Dirk Koetter should play to Jameis’ strengths”….DUH….HE SHOULD BE PLAYING TO THE STRENGTH OF THE ENTIRE TEAM….

our tackles suck….I think everyone saw that during our 3game losing streak and during the last 2 loses…jameis’s jersey is always just as dirty or dirtier than kwons….the things that dirk does are just head scratching…not playing to the strength of your team, quitting on your team, using the wrong personel, declining or accepting penalties, mismanaging the clock and use of timeouts….I could go on and on….dirk in incompetent….GO BUCS!!!!

  19. ndog Says:

The answer to your question Joe about why he is better outside the pocket and vs pressure is simple. In those two situations he is just reacting and playing ball, when he does not have pressure he is reading the defense and is showing hesitation which is causing late throws which leads to accuracy issues. In other words when in the pocket he is thinking to much and not just playing.

  20. America's Commenter Says:

@ndog nailed it. Winston is much better when his natural instincts take over than when he has time to think and concentrate. NFL defensive coordinators have probably already figured that out, which is why many defenses are laying back in complex man/zone combo coverages on critical downs.

  21. Waterboy Says:

    @Tampa Tony
Is that really you making that comment or did someone steal your handle? Lol

    @Ben
Have you watched any of the Titans games or just looking at stats? Tennessee’s offense runs through Demarco Murray. Mariota’s not playing bad for a 2nd year QB but he also is mistake prone and 2 of them were returned for TD’s last week which hurt them late in the game against SD. He’s also playing a weak schedule when you look at the teams they’re facing.

  22. Bob in valrico Says:

Agree with Ndog with a caveat the trips outside of the pocket when under pressure are instinctive. The planned rollout was a disaster in the last game.
Idon’t know what is about Glennon when he rolls out,but he looks more comfortable on this type of play.I am talking about the execution of the rollout, not necessarily the pass afterwards.Might be the hesitant, probing style when jameis runs.

  23. IBlameLovie Says:

Joe knows that everyone knows that Joe was wrong about the firing of Lovie and the hiring of Dirk.

  24. Joseph Measor Says:

    Idiots. Spellcheck is your friend.

“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

Yes, I know; this is a sports blog. But really?! Spell words properly. Use punctiation. Remember the first word in a sentence needs to be capitialized. And speaking in the third person is only for Joe, though of course, that is wrong too. I digress on that point, as it’s his page and he edits himself.

    #stopmakiningfloridiansdumberthantheyappear

  25. Bob in valrico Says:

Proper capitialization and punctiation have no place in spelling rants or sports blogs.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

    @Joseph Measor

your write. Its so mind bottling how some people can be so dumb.

  27. Trip Horner Says:

Can we please just fire Koetter already…

  28. Tampa Tony Says:

@waterboy- Yeah it’s me. Contrary to what some may believe I like Jameis. He’s just not above criticism like some FSU homers believe.

  29. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Almost ndog… When defenses blitz it’s easier for a receiver to break free. And Jameis makes quick reads. Only makes sense that those are easier throws for him. But he’s taking all the hits because his feet and release are slow. Now when defenses sit in coverage Jameis is in trouble because they can react more to him. Winston’s biggest issue is his feet and release. His accuracy issues come from him trying to speed up his mechanics. Until he can improve in this area he’ll continue to take big hits and throw ints.
