Jason Licht Explains: Pool Jumping Is Over

General manager Jason Licht has changed a tradition

Regular readers here know Joe dives deep into all pressing matters concerning the Buccaneers.

That includes Joe having a serious discussion with general manager Jason Licht about his celebrated pool jumping.

It became a Licht family tradition known across the Tampa Bay area and beyond.

Bucs win, and Licht gets home and jumps right in the swimming pool with his kids while wearing his gameday suit. (No, no Speedo.) The happy photo appears on Licht’s Twitter account and Bucs fans share it and smile.

But Bucs fans may have noticed Licht hasn’t made a victory jump in months, despite the Bucs 5-5 record.

Yes, Licht still has a pool — and kids who love the Bucs and wins. The end of the Licht pool jumping tradition is about a changed mentality, Licht told Joe.

A Licht pool jump is now only reserved for a truly landmark victory, such as one that sends the Bucs to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Beating the Bears, or even the Chiefs at Arrowhead, no longer qualifies.

Licht said he reserves the right to perform a pool jump again for a uniquely special request, one Joe presumes will not come from his dry cleaner.

  4. Tampa Tony Says:

Good this always seemed amateurish or presented an attitude of not expecting to win

  5. Doctor Stroud Says:

I would like to see Dirk Koetter wear the zebra pants every time the Bucs win (seen on Fox’s broadcast during the last game). Now that would be a breath of fresh air!

  6. NewTampaChris Says:

Yes, good timing. Time to act like you’ve been there before, even when you haven’t.

  7. DB55 Says:

  13. lightningbuc Says:

Geez, Joe won’t write about the Bucs practice squad, but will report on our GM’s backyard swimming schedule. Gotcha!

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He should pool jump when one of his free agent signings makes it through a season uninjured.

    Oh wait…

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @lightningbuc

    On the practice squad…

…I’ve always wondered what they actually do during the regular season. I always assumed they worked with the rest of the team in case they were called up, but when recent PS members were called up, one was rejected for not being in ‘football shape’…which did not make sense to me.

I wouldn’t mind a one time, inside look at the way the squad operates.

  16. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Yeah Joe, please give me the inside scoop on the practice squad. I cant wait to hear all about guys that never were and never will be. When they are driving UPS trucks and coaching middle school PE next year please continue to report on them because it is fascinating stuff and I just can’t get enough. Jesus Christ some of you guys!
