Volume Matters

November 27th, 2016

donovansmith3Will Russell Wilson have a Donovan Smith kind of afternoon today?

Joe’s talking about noise and the impact the Arrowhead Stadium crowd left on the Bucs’ starting left tackle. Smith, speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network, was blown away by the impact of that crowd.

“To not hear Jameis, I couldn’t understand anything he was saying at times,” Smith said. “That might have been the best stadium that I’ve every played in or been in.”

Keep in mind Smith played for Penn State, where 106,000+ pack into Beaver Stadium. Joe’s been there. It’s a crazy loud venue with legions of locals wasted on Rolling Rock.

“Two feet away from someone and you only see a mouth moving, it’s crazy,” Ali Marpet said of the Arrowhead scene.

So will Bucs fans spew that kind of energy at Russell Wilson and the Seahawks today?

Can the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway rock again, like it hasn’t in years? Joe’s certainly not expecting lots of Seattle fans traveling on a holiday weekend.

Sadly, Joe isn’t expecting a crazy stadium, even with the calls to go “all-in” on the Florida State warchant for Jameis Winston. Most Bucs fans would be happy with an 8-8 season, which doesn’t reflect a collective fan base treating today like a playoff game.

    LOL Joe.

Is the a serious question? RayJay is probably the quietest stadium there is. Maybe Miami is worse.

That being said, if you’re going to the game, GET LOUD! GO BUCS!

  2. D-Mac Says:

Having been away and then attending my first Bucs game in ten years against Chicago the other week, it was pretty shocking to me how quiet it was in RJS. The place used to be jumping for games like this. And even if not a big game, at least the crowd would have signs of life and get loud. Very sad. I hope things turn around.

  3. Mort Says:

I keep saying it and they keep proving it every Sunday. Tampa has the softest fan-base as a whole in the NFL. There are some exceptional fans, just not near enough of them. It’s a real shame.

  4. Chris Says:

Lot of actual Floridians, born, raised, going back generations like myself left the area during the Great Recession . A lot of transplants there now with no true inground emotions for the area teams. Now we can only watch on our DirectTV and comment on the one true Buccaneer site.

  5. Chris Says:

And college football means more to them than other NFL cities

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

Some home wins will knock the Bucs fans out of that comatose state at RJS. Go Bucs!

  7. Chris Says:

I think the old Sombrero , with the metal bleachers we could stand and jump on was louder

  8. University of Seffner Says:

The only way the Den of Depression gets filled up is if the Bucs win consistently. I know that’s an obvious answer, but no one wants to get loud on 3rd down, and in the red zone, and watch the defense give up a touchdown, or if the other team gets the 1st down every time. It’ll take awhile before the stadium gets packed with at least 95% Bucs fans, but those days are on the horizon again.

  9. Tampa Tony Says:

Maybe every incomplete Wilson pass they can fire the cannons? We have a dead fan base no energy no passion for the local team just colleges they never attended

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Apparently the Bucs & media are still blaming the fans for Ray-Jay’s reputation as the ‘Den of Depression’. P-L-E-A-S-E!!! Y’all need to look inward to find the real culprits.

For starters, look back at Bucs ‘glory days’ (yes, we did have several). Fans identified with players like Brooks, Lynch & Sapp on defense, and with Alstott & Dunn on offense. Saw tons of 55, 47, 99, 40 & 28 jerseys at the games. Nowadays? I’d say that Jameis is about the only one right now that most fans identify with (check the jerseys).

For another, check the records. From the time Tony Dungy took over through our SB year with Chucky (1996-2002) Bucs went 66-46 in regular season and were 5-4 in playoff games. But look at home games and Bucs went 35-13 in regular season plus 3-0 during home playoff games. In short, Bucs were outstanding at home.

Now compare that to the past 7 years (2009-2015) under 3 different HCs. Bucs have gone 36-76 in regular season with 0 playoff appearances (32% winning … wow). In home games Bucs have gone 17-39 in regular season (30% winning …. again, wow).

Anyone still wondering why Bucs’ fans have trouble getting excited? It’s called ‘putting a lousy, uncompetitive product on the field’. Not to mention that the ‘stadium experience’ itself leaves tons to be desired. Bucs management is more interested in advertising Coke and Tostitos than they are in getting Bucs fans excited about the game. August-October (sometimes Nov) afternoon games are usually blazing hot, but they’ll gladly sell you with a $7 Coke or $10 beer to cool yourself down. Halftime ‘entertainment’ is a joke at RayJay. And stadium design (relatively open ends?) isn’t exactly conducive to holding the noise in. Of course, when the only ‘chant’ that Bucs fans know is T-A-M-P-A B-A-Y it really doesn’t matter much since only half the fan base is shouting at any one time anyways.

Yes Joe, volume matters … to the Glazers that is. You were talking about the volume of Cokes, beer and food sold, weren’t you?

  11. WyomingBucsFan Says:

Your right Chris. I was at the Old Sombrero when 99 corkscrewed Jerry Rice into the green grass. Now I live in Wyoming, forced out of Florida to work in the oilfields of WY, ND, CO and Texas.

  12. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

Just went to the seachickens site, and they are already writing this off as a win. And the writer was taking shots @ JW3. Let’s show them they are wrong and get another home win. TAMPA—-> BAY!!!!!

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hoping for a win, but not expecting one.

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

Ive been hearing alot of blitzing wilson and nowhere spence a big part of the gameplan??

    ARE YOU NUTS!

Wilson is a counter puncher dont create lanes/holes for him. He wants that! Sit spence and create a wall and let wilson beat you in the pocket

    DONT BLITZ WILSON

  15. PanthersSuck! Says:

I often get asked to sit down at the DOD. Pretty lame experience.

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I wish I could be in Florida today. Please be LOUD!

  17. Pit Says:

I am at the dolphins game right now and is not as quite as it was 5 weeks ago when they beat the Steelers. Winning fixed the issue.

    Go Bucs

  18. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Does anyone know when Josh Huff will be active?? We could use another playmaker
