Kwon’s Game? Thank GMC

September 14th, 2016
Key in Kwon's success.

Key in Kwon’s success.

Joe’s ringing the dinner bell for the anti-Gerald McCoy rabble.

Sunday in the win over the Dixie Chicks — sorry, Joe didn’t find an appropriate way to work in a Billy Sherman reference — Bucs middle linebacker Kwon Alexander had a monster game, racking up 17 tackles, 15 of the solo variety.

That’s Ray Lewis-level imposing of your will.

The key to that? Well, former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn, who was too cut for Chucky, believes GMC set the table for Alexander’s day.

“He had by far and away his best game,” Quinn said of Alexander on SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday. “Whenever I see a linebacker who has a really good game like that, I know [Gerald McCoy] had just as good of a game because [he] is keeping those guys off of [Alexander] and freeing him up to make plays.”

This is the same thing former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht discussed on Monday. If guards are getting past GMC and tying up Alexander, all of a sudden that game Sunday is quite different. Perhaps not even a win for the Bucs.

And, oh yeah, for the second year in a row in Atlanta, GMC made a critical play at the end to seal the win.

React, haters.

    NO COMMENT, NEXT QUESTION

  2. Jeagan1999 Says:

I think McCoy is one of the best and most disruptive linemen in the game! And now that he has some help up front…Ayers, Spence, etc…(not to mention a potent offense that can score points) I think he will really be dominant!

  3. JAB83 Says:

I think GMC has taken the bait on going to the dark side.

Dude is different in so many ways I cant even explain.

I think he got tired of the good fight…

Personally, I think that sucks and hope its not true.

    Gerald McCoy!!

    I love you BRO!

I have never uttered a bad word against you!!

    Kind, Cool, and Competitive!!

    A true CHAMP!!

    Oklahoma boy!

    I love you DOGG!!!

  5. JonBuc Says:

Ultimately…I give the credit to Joe for firing up McCoy during the locker room Q & A recently ;)…kidding of course. McCoy has continued to improve each year. I see a big season in store for # 93.

  6. Clodhopper Says:

So Daryl Smith taught Kwon how to play smarter. Ayers brought a nasty attitude that GMC seems to have adopted. GMC has the game of his career that opened up opportunities for Kwon to have the game of HIS career. It’s like fricken dominoes!!

  7. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

McCoy flashed on Sunday he used his hands really well. I know he has a new position coach, but his get off and aggression was off the charts. He needed a dog in that position room and he probably have a few this year. I’m really disappointed that Jac got hurt he would have likely added more pressure in sub packages.

Let’s keep it up and I will be there in 2 weeks reppin, THEM BUCS!

Its football tissue, next man up homie.

Crazy what a legit coaching can do for a team in one offseason, they are like a whole diffrent team out there with Mainly the same guys, u sprinkle in Ayers and Spence plus a few DB’S and all of a sudden this defense is respectable again. Love it, can’t wait to watch them get better every week as well. No ceilings for this squad. The league Will Soon know who dem boyz from da bay are if they don’t know already.

  10. Bryan Says:

You make me laugh Joe! After the win you wrote:

Joe’s happy for McCoy, but Joe hopes this is a sign of big things to come. If McCoy hopes to be the next Warren Sapp, then he has to be not just a game-changer, but a game-winner.

    Today, he was just that.

You bash “haters” but make comments like this. You guys should run for office. If a “hater” were to display “hate” by making similar comments as this then the “hater” would be admonished. Come on man!

As a “hater”, I have no problem saying GMC had a monster game on Sunday. Possibly his finest as a pro. Very happy to see it. My belief is that Jameis was true to his word and got certain people’s why’s right, at least for a game. I would like to point out that GMC had a good game against the chicks last year then kind of vanished behind the wall of “double teams” and “no help” BS.

    My issue with GMC is/was:
    1) Leadership – When it was his team, the team was terrible. Simple as that.
    2) Not enough dog – does/did not make big plays when we needed him to.
    3) Jameis saying that people need to get their why’s right, then Joe among others reporting it was the D-line partying after being destroyed by the Stinking Panthers in the last game. If GMC is/was a leader he should have some control of his crew, right? Speaking of this, that was a big story. Where is the follow up?
If GMC were not worthy of “hate” err criticism, why be happy for GMC after a good game? Why be hopeful of things to come?

I believe that GMC will be much closer to what we expected him to be this year. Unfortunately, it is a certain second year QB we can thank for addressing a highly paid DT’s why deficit.

  11. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Sadly there are still ppl out there that refuse to give GMC his credit when he plays well wich I totally don’t understand if your a REAL Bucs fan. I’m just gonna give myself a headache tryin to figure out sum of these ppl tho so why try.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

GMC is solid……IMO, the big difference makers for the change with the Bucs defense are Mike Smith & Robert Ayers

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

Tampabaybucfan on Parole, hit the nail on the head!!! Nothing else to add to that!!!!

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think the difference making is an added number of threats. It forces team to compensate.

Of course, we’re only one game into the season so far. 1-1 come next week 😉

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And yes…I’m hoping to eat crow again…

  16. LargoBuc Says:

Can someone please pull up some info on how many of Suh, Atkins, Sacks come on third down as opposed to GMC. Until you show me that these other DT’s sacks come at a time in which McCoy’s don’t, i’m not buying the narrative on GMC not making big plays when they count, or whatever.

  17. ATrain Says:

I think GMC in the past has taken plays off and been soft at times.

HOWEVER if GMC plays as hard the rest of the year as he did SUNDAY and The BUCS will be devastating to other Offenses.

GMC had the best game I have seen

YES I am a GMC doubter

GMC was the man on Sunday. If you doubt that ask the dead birds QB

  18. D-Rome Says:

Crazy what a legit coaching can do for a team in one offseason, they are like a whole diffrent team out there with Mainly the same guys

Right because Grimes, Hargraves, Ayers, Noah Specnce, Darryl Smith, and Josh Robinson were all on the team last year. Uh huh.

  19. RustyRhinos Says:

I’m hoping you eat cardinals not crows Bonsai!

Good game by Mr. McCoy against the falcons. Great to see him make splash plays the entire game. He has done that in parts of games but not the whole game. I also believe that the addition of a angry attitude D line man who can play has much improv3d Mr. McCoy game.

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

GMC is the same player. The difference is that there’s now been a significant talent upgrade around him.
    The “haters/doubters” will continue regardless.

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

Mccoy is already the best DT in Buc history
Anyone capable of study film knows that
Despite how many Defensive coordinators and schemes
    7? 8?
He doesnt have Sapp’s stats, because he hasnt had Sapp’s supporting cast
And Sapp agreed McCoy is a better player. Hes said so

The haters are just miserable fast food employees.
    Gotta bitch about something

  22. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @Bryan
The lineman were not partying they were laughing in the lockerroom after the game.
Jameis was in a funk because they lost.Love jameis for what he has done, but the fact is he missed Evans three times in the endzone,so he was one the WHY’s.
And credit for fixing things with the Bucs starts with Jason Licht. He shored up the O-line for Winston.Drafted Mike Evans.Charles Sims,Kwan Alexander,Marpet,Smith,Hargreaves and Spence among others.
In free agency Mankins and cherilus were brought in to also help the O line.
This year its Ayers and Grimes.
McCoy labored under bad coaching and no talent around him,and it just shows what a force he be with talent around him.
Just like jameis ,who threw four strikes for TD’s,He still needed Simms to make a fantastic run after catch and ASJ and Evans to make great grabs.
Leaders have to have somebody to lead to be effective.

  23. Bob in Valrico Says:

And then there is our HC. He saved doug martin from being traded or sitting on the bench, when he told Lovie let me see what I can do with him.Recocognized something was off with ASJ.Told ASJ what was expected, and got ASJ to work hard to get back in good graces, and it paid off.
He also has a great relationship with Jameis and gives jameis a free hand to
    EXcel.
and then there was Mike Smith who will let his players go out and have fun,
make plays and believe in themselves.
