Drop Watch: Three Assigned, One Possible

First drop of 2016 is recorded

The NFL offers no official stats on drops. Various unreliable stat-geek outfits do, but Joe doesn’t trust their data. And after the seemingly countless drops by Mike Evans last year, Joe entered 2016 determined to chronicle drops and avoid confusion.

WEEK 2 vs. Arizona – Film review has Joe issuing two drops against the Cardinals and one “maybe.”

Charles Sims gets the first drop, with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. Yes, the short pass to Sims was tipped a the line of scrimmage, but Sims got two paws on the ball and was looking right at it. He couldn’t squeeze it and re-tipped, which led to an interception.

Vincent Jackson returns for his second drop of the season with 2:12 remaining in the third quarterback. V-Jax went up for a 20-yard throw over the middle at the 4 yard line. He got two hands on it, squeezed it and didn’t hold on.

Mike Evans is issued a drop for his two hands on a well-thrown ball from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, with 7:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. No question here after the film is studied. Evans is hit in stride on the right flank. The defender did not break up that pass.

**Possible drop goes to Evans with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter. It’s a slant pass. Video, including the All-22 coach’s film, is inconclusive.

WEEK 1 vs. Falcons – After Bucs-Falcons video study, Joe is assigning the first drop of the year to Vincent Jackson, and only one drop for Sunday’s game.

It came with 59 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bucs were on the Falcons’ 41-yard line, and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, dropped back to pass with no rush. Jackson, on the right flank, broke inside and then took his route outside to the sideline. Jameis put the ball on the money at the 25-yard line. The ball entered Jackson’s gut and he couldn’t squeeze it.

After the play, the TV cameras caught V-Jax giving sort of an “it’s-on-me” wave back toward the huddle.

Bad drop, for sure.

It surely wasn’t a great game for V-Jax. Receivers coach/offensive coordinator Todd Monken said V-Jax was at fault on the miscommunication that led to Jameis’ interception.

    Fun Read Joe Thanks!

  5. Dion Hancock Says:

There were a lot of offensive mistakes in that game including the receivers not helping their qb out.

  6. Negative Jeff Says:

Joe – I like this. Keep it up. This team needs two to three new receivers. The talent level outside of Evans simply isn’t there. 2-3 years away Bucs fans. The entire D-Line still needs an overhaul, too.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Drops weren’t the problem…..not having the opportunity to drop was…errant passes.
I love Jameis but we have to be honest…..he is off-target more than he should be.

  8. LakeLandBuc Says:

Speaking of drops, the Bucs just promoted Freddie Martino to the active roster. SMH, Cecil Shorts will miss the Rams game, no Jeremy Butler?.

  9. cmurda Says:

Drops were in line with what we see from most teams. Even the great ones. I saw the Cards drop a couple too. The real difference in this game that made it a laugher was the same problem we’ve had for years. No pressure from the D Line. None.

Joe mentions he doesn’t trust other outfits’ data, then proceeds to “issue” two drops and a maybe, yet then further proceeds to describe FOUR scenarios. Color me confused.

This is very clear. 2 drops Sunday. One possible drop. The 4th is shown from being during Week 1. Joe will be leaving all games in this weekly post.–Joe

In all fairness to the WR’s, our QB had 5 turnovers. How in the hell can you win in the NFL with your QB turning the ball over 5 times? Lay the blame where it should be and quit SIDE STEPPING the facts. We don’t need to SUGARCOAT anything, we didn’t do it for Josh Freeman, Josh McCown or Mike Glennon. So why is Jameis getting special privilege, is it because Jason Licht spent the 1st overall pick on him?

  12. Chris Says:

Hit the nail on the head Lakeland, it’s because none of them were the number one pick from FSU. Also, the dumb number two pick on a kicker with a team with glaring holes all over the place….also FSU.

  13. Bob in valrico Says:

Trent Dilfer on wdae yesterday assigned 15 off target passes to
Jameis in Sundays game. Kinda silly to be worrying about drops.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

You say “2 drops Sunday” yet detail 3 drops (one each for Sims, V-drops and K.Y.) – and then also describe another “possible drop” for Evans. Lakeland is right – your cipherin’ ain’t addin’ up Joe.

Firstly – You can’t possibly assign a “drop” on a tipped ball – even if Sims did get his hands on it. And obviously “possible drops” don’t count either. Its either a clear drop that was well thrown and in the receivers hands or its not a “drop”.

So the official Joe count should be 3 drops so far this year. 2 by Jackson and 1 by Evans.
