What Jameis Has Done

December 30th, 2015
Strong rookie numbers.

Strong rookie numbers.

Virtually anyone who clicked on this here corner of the Interwebs during the 13 months knows Joe was all-in early on the Bucs acquiring America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Still, as much as Joe campaigned, begged, pleaded, wore out rosary beads hoping the Bucs would do the right thing and draft a franchise quarterback in Jameis, Joe never dreamed Jameis would be as good as he has been as a rookie —  even with the painful first few games included.

It’s just one season; just a rookie season, but what Jameis had done sure has whetted Joe’s appetite for what will come down the road.

Joe Kania of Buccaneers.com has the details.

Winston is currently No. 4 on the NFL’s rookie passing list, dating back to the NFL/AFL merger in 1970. He trails Andrew Luck, Cam Newton and Peyton Manning, all of whom were also top picks in the NFL Draft. Winston will likely move past Manning this weekend, though, as he trails the future Hall-of-Famer by just 22 yards. Winston would need 335 yards to pass Newton for No. 2 all-time, but Luck’s mark of 4,274 appears safe for yet another season.

In addition to his impressive yardage total, Winston is on pace to throw fewer interceptions than all three of the quarterbacks ahead of him on the NFL’s rookie passing list. Winston is on pace to throw 14 picks this year while Manning threw 28, Luck threw 18 and Newton threw 17. Winston already has more passing touchdowns than Newton did as a rookie and needs one more to tie Luck and three more to tie Manning.

In addition, behind Jameis, the Bucs are 193 yards away from breaking the franchise record for most offensive yards in a season.

No, Jameis is not among the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Not yet. As a rookie, he is light years better than Stewart McClown.

At worst, Jameis has given Bucs fans a whole lot to look forward to.

But I though Winston was going to throw 30 INTs. What about that????!

Most offensive yards in a season and JW sparkling, all positive but not enough ignore the overall team record, its personnel and management. All in all, we need a Jeffrey Lurie series of move. Listen up Glazers it’s past time to act and not accept with apologies. Look carefully how events led to Lurie’s firing of Kelly. None of us are so smart to simply ignore the possibilities.

#3 has been a huge success that’s for sure. Now I’m waiting for his “winner” attitude to infect the rest of the team.

It seems to be starting but we really are a group of losers when it comes to dumb penalties and finding ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I’m waiting for a true change in this team. Didn’t happen under Rah..Schiano..and not yet under Lovie. Hopefully #3 can do the trick.

But, he’s an interception machine!! And, runs slower than molasses. And played against weak competition. And wait until he gets millions of dollars, think he will suddenly grow up?

    AND DAMNIT CRAB LEGS.

Still laughing at you pre-draft haters. You know who you are. Even the ones who changed your user names.

While he has a lot of learning to do, he has exceeded my expectations for a rookie QB.

    @One Love

Remember Jamarcus Leftwich? Where are those guys now?? Been hiding out since early in the season.

Glad to be right about the savior.

Been a long time since we heard from all the idiot haters from last offseason

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo always knew Hamus would be great…..Hamus has an elongated arc….just like Pablo….”

Don’t forget that JW is also a legit rushing threat with 5 TDs. Mariota (whose best attribute as a QB prospect was his speed and running ability) only has 2.

Right you are Joe. As one who was more than “all in” for the Bucs drafting Winston, I can also say that JW#3 has been damn impressive in his rookie year – better than I expected even. I knew Winston would be a top NFL QB in time but didn’t expect him to look this good so quickly. Its a testament to his hard work and talent – and also to the GREAT JOB Lovie, Koetter and Bajakian did in 2015 of grooming young Winston.

Well, I’m not 100% sold on him, but I’m about 90%. Being the first pick of the draft, he had little free time last off season. This year he will have plenty. So he has to show he can make it thru without getting into trouble.

And then…year two. If he shows he can carry things over into his second year? I’m sold 100%.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’ll add…that I believe he will accomplish those things. Just too many let downs to go all in yet.

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    He has 3,717 yards passing…and 295 yards rushing. That’s 4012 total.

So far as the 13 picks? Expect a 2-3 or more this weekend.

Interestingly…Mariota has a lot fewer yards…3 less picks. However, he’s been sacked 38 times compared to Winston’s 25.

That shows we have the better Oline.

Titans may end up with the first pick. They’ll go Oline if they are smart.

Like Joe I had hoped Jameis would be a Buc coming out of college.

Unlike Joe I was not banging the drum for the Bucs to blow a first round pick on Johnny Rehab for 6 months. So before Joe promotes himself to armchair GM extraordinaire for Jameis he can remember the similar coverage he gave to a QB who has the earmark of a huge bust.

Joe was no different than Bill Polian and Gil Brandt, but what do those guys know? Hey, Mike Pettine has done such a wonderful job with Johnny. The next Bill Walsh this guy.

    No it does not.
