Best NFC South Defensive Tackle Up Next

The NFC South’s best defensive tackle will hunt Jameis again

You saw the downright bone-crushing hits on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, delivered by Aaron Donald and the Rams.

On Sunday, the best defensive tackle in the NFC South will get a shot to tee off on Tampa Bay’s future.

This is among the reasons why Joe wants the Bucs to knock off the fantasy nonsense and start Mike Glennon on Sunday. Young Panthers Pro Bowler Kawaan Short, is a manbeast. The late second-round pick in 2013 has 11 sacks and, per BSPN, is one of only nine NFL players to reach 20 tackles for loss this season.

Short says he’s been studying Gerald McCoy, Warren Sapp and other great players at his position. The McCoy haters can read about that here.

And don’t think Short is getting all kinds of help from his defensive ends. You know how many sacks Carolina defensive ends have since Thanksgiving? One.

The immortal Kony Ealy leads Panthers defensive ends with five sacks.

People go on and on all the time about the value and perspective that’s gained by taking mental reps from the sideline during an injury. I’m not opposed to having Winston take in a few of those. Maybe treat it like a preseason game. Put in the starters for the first quarter to get some additional game action in and then start pulling them soon after. Get a look at the young guys and some practice squad guys. Most importantly, let the guys we’re going to be depending on next year stay healthy and go in to the off season without an unnecessary injury.

  2. Adambomb418 Says:

Sorry Joe, it’s that type of “fear” mentality of Jameis getting hurt is what we need to rid this team of. This is a man’s game and if you coach your team with fear then you have already lost before you have begun.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

I can’t believe how scared Joe is for the Bucs to take to the field!!! I thought this was the big test!!! This was what you were calling for weeks ago!!! The Panthers with something to play for!!!

Now Joe wants to turtle like lovie at halftime!!!!

  4. NJBucsFan Says:

Anthony Becht just recommended Dirk as a head coach for the Eagles to 97.5 in Philly…

He said I hope no one from Tampa is listening.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jameis will play because Jameis wants to play and should play….we need to do everything we can possibly do to win this game….it is NOT meaningless…..we will have to live with our record & this game through the off season….it is a division rivalry.

Enough of this meaningless game $hit…..it’s time to start acting like a real NFL team.

How the hell can you sit “America’s QB”?

  6. Buc1987 Says:

I’d like to read about him studying the “great” Gerald McCoy, but where’s the link?

And if they win and draft 16th instead, people will be pissed off at all the talented guys they missed because they won a game that is, from the Bucs perspective, meaningless. Can’t win in this situation.

  8. BucFan20 Says:

Let me see if I have this right. All Joe has wanted is to trade Glennon. Now he is afraid Winston is ASJ brittle and wants to start Glennon. Risk HIM getting hurt and lose his trade value. Smart move. Wiser move. Start the other backup. That way if he gets hurt you have all off season to replace him!

  9. Defense Rules Says:

I’m having trouble believing that I’m reading this from you Joe. Jameis gets paid to play football. Jameis loves to play football. Jameis is working hard it looks like to be a leader on this football team.

So the Bucs are supposed to sit Jameis down for this game because our opponent is tough and might hurt him? Really?

Jameis is a competitor and is still developing into THE franchise QB that we so desperately need. Not only does sitting him down for this game hurt his development, but it sends a very negative signal to the rest of the team. Jameis’ team.

And to anyone who says that this game is ‘meaningless’ I’d recommend that you don’t walk into the Bucs’ locker room before the game and tell the players that.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Joe my stomach’s upset that you mentioned Sapp and McCoy as equals.

But I keep hearing lack of help is what is hampering McCoy

  12. LargoBuc Says:

If this team has any back bone, they should be eager to take the field Sunday. This is a division rival, if our Bucs dont want to beat the brakes off of those guys, something is seriously wrong. And im sure Jameis is eager for another crack at these guys after week 4.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How ’bout we be the ones doin’ the hurtin’……take out Cammy for the plaoffs….(not deliberately, of course)

And….I agree bucrightoff……but since when did our objective become getting a higher draft pick……I don’t think that’s what NE does or any other successful team….
A measure of your success is picking 32….not 1st.

  14. Rrsrq Says:

He has help, he has Ryan Delaire, the player we let go, lol

  15. Couch Fan Says:

So Short is the best DT in the division and he apparently doesnt need much help to perform…. All I keep hearing for McCoy is that he needs much more help to perform. Odd how that works.

  16. HarlemBuc Says:

So if we win the posters on here after seeing this defense for 15 games would rather “win” and lose ten draft spots… And this is the problem with yall as fans… Dude lose the game period. Playoffs? Over. This season? Over.
We are a rebuilding team that had been mismanaged and we are closer to correcting it with a loss.
Start MG, hopefully he has a good game the backup of the future is on deck, get a solid pick, pick solidly…. That should be our focus… Calm Jamie’s down and explain to him the “business” of football and sit him down

Of course, which is why even last year when people were rooting for tanking it was gross and misguided. That’s why we have a loser culture, because we just willingly accept losing and even try to look for the positives in it (ugh…). It’s also entire true that all the best teams are where they are because of how they draft in rounds 3-7, so drafting 9, 12 or 17 should be irrelevant.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

@bucrightoff and @couch…WOW..something I can agree on with the both of you…it really doesn’t matter if we pick 9th or 16th…players like Hargreaves, ramsey, bosa will be gone regardless…last year has taught us that we need the right players and players that can come in and contribute right away like d.smith, marpet and kwon…the best dt in the nfc south has 11sacks with no help around…he doesn’t ask players to step up…he steps up for them…now people will say,”oh, but gmc was hurt all year”, which is true but damn…im pretty sure k.short is banged up to right now too…GO BUCS!!!

  19. Buc1987 Says:

All this talk about winning the last game makes me laugh…yes I get it. Finish strong. but do any of you honestly thing we stand a chance of winning this Sunday?

Talk about it all you want, but we’re going to lose. So let’s talk draft picks.

    C’mon man.

  20. bucrightoff Says:

Lol I mean yeah 87, a win would be very surprising. But I think we’d at least like to see them not mail it in this Sunday.

    DOH!!

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Kawaan Short is an outstanding defensive tackle in his own right, but he’s even better because of the quality of the defensive players that he has around him. It’s not just the DEs however. It’s also how well the LBs play, the CBs and the safeties. Personally I think GMC could do just as well as Short if he were playing in the Panthers defense and wasn’t so banged up.

Nevertheless, still don’t like his comments after the Bears game. It’s easy to take what’s said hastily out of context, but GMC’s comments about the demoralizing impact of that early interception being called back because of Verner’s penalty is clearly out of line … especially for a team captain … and his coaches need to have a long talk to him about it.

  23. GhostofSchiano Says:

    @JOE,

Any truth to the rumor that Jeff Lurie is looking to hire Koetter as HC and Frazier as DC?

Heard that on a sports talk station in the Orlando area.

  24. what? Says:

    20 TFL? McCoy’s got 8.

One less than Bennie Logan if you need him.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

If it’s not the Bucs, we don’t need any more Super Bowl winners in our division. Atlanta and Carolina drop dead.

GhostofSchiano…this was way back in 2012 on NFL.com.

“Dirk Koetter’s name sits atop the list of NFL assistant coaches certain to draw interest as head-coaching vacancies pop up around the league.”

“Fox Sports.com’s Alex Marvez reported Monday that the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator will be busy during the team’s playoff bye week after lining up interviews for the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns’ head-coaching jobs.”

  28. Sick of Lovie Says:

I’d like to see them win Sunday, but then I think about the last few games we lost to sorry teams and I remind myself that we are a sorry team too. Props to Atl for beating them, but they dug a little deeper than our team can. I’m still suprised we swept Atl and split with N.O.

  29. Ray Rice Says:

Yet you dumb MF’s still argue that Aunt Geraldine is the best DT in the game. And that he gets no help. And that he gets quadruple teamed. He’s isn’t even the best DT in his own division. Kawaan is just another example of a professional executing what he’s paid to do. No excuses. Only reason he studies Geraldine is to see what not to do on game day.

  30. Buccfan37 Says:

Sit Winston, let Glennon play. I would be surprised if that happens. No way, but I’d like to see it happen. Think of the storyline possibilities and comments if Glennon plays well or falls on his face. Glennon leading the Bucs to an upset win would be priceless to me. Go for it!

  31. Mike10 Says:

McCoy is a wash machine with wheels
