Please Trade Alterraun Verner

November 3rd, 2015
Verner

Verner has no future under Lovie Smith

Today’s afternoon trade deadline is rapidly approaching, and Joe is doing simple math.

Cornerback Alterraun Verner earns a fat pile of money and won’t be here next year because Lovie Smith would not start Verner over Johnthan Banks, Mike Jenkins or Tim Jennings.

Lovie does not like Verner’s game. Simple as that, to use Lovie’s favorite phrase.

But Joe suspects someone in the NFL would love 26-year-old Verner’s services. The 2013 Pro Bowler is a good, healthy, smart guy, who must somehow be terribly misplaced in Lovie’s defense.

Joe is imploring general manager Jason Licht to trade Verner today for some other team’s decent backup cornerback.

The reality is the majority of backup corners in the NFL are an upgrade from Jenkins. So make the smart deal. Verner is currently learning nickel cornerback on the fly with Tampa Bay, and he doesn’t look so great there. Plus, as Joe referenced, there’s no logical reason to believe Verner will be here in 2016.

Licht will tell you Bill Belicheat taught him that a team should never be afraid to move on from a mistake. Well, Verner is a glaring free agency miss because Lovie won’t even start the guy.

Get it done, Jason. Throw in Jennings, too.

Unless we trade for another CB…..keep him & trade him in the off-season.

Willie Young would be a good pickup….

  2. BucFan20 Says:

    Lovie’s defense is misplaced!

  3. Aristotle Says:

Alterraun Verner is better than Jenkins and Jennings for sure. Let’s trade Jennings for some Apple Pie, and Jenkins for a used TV. Banks was a let down yesterday too.

  4. James Walker Says:

If you’re not going to use him, trade him. But remember, he was the only good thing that came out of the Revis trade. Getting rid of him basically means we gave away our 2013 1st round pick FOR NOTHING!

  5. D-Rome Says:

Yep, this is what happens when head coaches out every two years by bad football organizations. When the new guy comes in they see that the things the previous regime did and didn’t do all failed or they get to call the shots. Look how awesome the Browns have been over the past few years (LOL!). Now Browns fans want Pettine fired and he’s going to pay the price for the mistakes the organization has made at the executive level.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It looks like Licht is hitting some home runs with the draft and some UDFA…..but really striking out in FA……strange.

Two more good drafts and we are there!!!

  7. Thunder Sack Says:

How can we trade a solid player (although at times he does not make plays) for nothing, Joe? We need to add and get some competition!

  8. lightningbuc Says:

Any cornerback currently on any team’s practice squad is an upgrade to Jenkins.

  9. BucMania Says:

    Joe is awesome.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Using our present defensive schemes, I’m not sure that it matters who’s in our secondary. Any NFL QB (starter or backup) can pick apart the secondary given enough time. Our DLine simply isn’t getting the job done for the majority of each game, especially our DEs.

Far as trading Verner goes, I still think that he’s the best CB that we’ve got at present, and that he’s being misused. Banks is looking more and more lost on a lot of plays (see the Falcons TD that sent the game into OT?). And Jenkins … well, he’s Jenkins.

  11. London Buc Says:

Id make a call into Browns for Haden, if theres a fire sale about to happen…why not make that call. he will be better than any first round pick cb next year.

  12. TAC Says:

Verner, another FA mystery man defender, and failure. There is smoke in the Tilman to the Panthers, and not the bucs. Riverboat Ron was fired by Lovie, but all the good FA players from his Chicago era are firing Lovie to play for Ron.

Verner will finds a home somewhere, and play well. Lovie needs to figure out how to get the most out of these guys.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

how about we keep the talented players and get rid of the pathetic coach and system. How many ex bucs are having solid years on other nfl teams because they were not a fit here. the list is long and distinguished. Talented players win championship not systems or organizational philosophies. It makes no sense to keep sending good players away because coaches are incapable of using a player to his strengths. Coaching is about putting your players in the best situation to succeed not force them to be robots in a system.

  14. rjhurst813 Says:

IMO Trading Verner is absolute foolishness. Verner should be starting at LCB and he can move to the slot in Nickel. If we had a better pass rush, that would cover up many wholes in our secondary. You don’t build a defense from back to front unless you have 2 press man corners and true cover safety. If there are weaknesses in your pass defense, you will be exploited without constant pressure.

The last two plays of the Falcons game is what our defense should look like. D-line step up and get the done.

The Raiders changed coaches how many times? And right now they’re…oh yeah, the 4th best team in the AFC. Bad teams make bad hires to begin with, that’s why they’re always hiring new coaches. The Browns are different, they fired Chud after 1 season. Even Lane Kiffin got into season 2. Which reminds me, in game 23 Lovie finally matched Lane’s win total after 18 games. At least Lovie is closing in on the great Lane Kiffin!

  16. bucrightoff Says:

And how do you trade Verner? Bad contract and his own coach who brought him in benched him. Might have to trade a 7th and Verner to get a conditional 6th.

  17. Another J Says:

He may as well try to trade Sterling Moore, and Bruce Carter too.

  18. Matt Says:

I just want a Good enough CB in TB too make teams target banks . Verner isn’t that guy . Never was in TB ! We need a revis talib CB . That won’t happen in mid season but it could happen from draft . We still need safety help as well these safeties are never in the right spot it seems like. Our cbs are always a few steps behind or just lost

  19. Matt Says:

What’s Danny lansannah been up too? Why haven’t we got a young CB prospect in Tampa yet

  20. D-Rome Says:

The Raiders changed coaches how many times? And right now they’re…oh yeah, the 4th best team in the AFC.

Since the Super Bowl they have changed coaches SEVEN times and every time they made a change they thought they had their guy. Jack Del Rio is their head coach now…. a defensive minded coach who runs a 4-3 defense just like Lovie Smith.

You’re not about to sing the praises of Jack Del Rio now, are you?

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome

Jack Del Rio has a 4-3 record in his first year. Lovie was 2-14 first year. Jack Del Rio is ten times the game day coach Lovie is. No one is going to mistake Jack Del Rio for Vince Lombardi that being said Lovie has never won consistently in this league and for the life of me I can’t figure out how some of you people think he will figure it out in year 12… Lovie has done nothing in this league except for 1 season which he had no control of the roster. Lovie has never won anything when he was in control of the roster and he never will.

  22. OneLove Says:

Please trade this scrub!! How does ANYONE lose their job to Mike Jenkins!?!?! He should be ASHAMED of HIMSELF!!

“If Lovie don’t no how to coach so be it… Hard to believe he would get a job offer and you wouldn’t…. Wonder why??? Your idiots that’s why…” – JAB83

“So my advice would be, yes, it’s okay to throw things at your TV when your team has a monumental collapse like the Bucs did on Sunday in Washington. But take a deep breath and understand that it is only going to get worse if you continue to jump from one coach to the next.” – Peter King

He’s done twice the job at least that Lovie has. And I don’t think he’s great either and he has lots of flaws as well. Titans just fired their overrated coach who’s better off as a coordinator. In time we will too and then the sky is the limit for this team. With Lovie, there’s always a ceiling sadly, and its very low.

  24. OneLove Says:

“Jack Del Rio has a 4-3 record in his first year. Lovie was 2-14 first year. Jack Del Rio is ten times the game day coach Lovie is.”

This is a perfect example of the short-sightedness aka “small wang syndrome” which is quite common on this blog.

It baffles me that there are actually people STUPID enough to believe that Jack Del Rio is not 1 times, nor 2 times, sh!t NOT EVEN 3 times, but 10 TIMES the game day coach Lovie is! Idiot’s quick to bring up numbers like “Oh he’s 4-3 in his first year!, I’ll go ahead and FORGET EVERYTHING HE DID IN JACKSONVILLE!”

I’ll make this simple so YOU can understand. You DON’T get to PICK AND CHOOSE what a Head Coach GET’S CREDIT FOR and DOESN’T GET CREDIT FOR!(Hint: It really makes you look like an idiot) The HEAD COACH get’s credit for a teams success regardless of what you want to tell yourself at night!

I’m happy for Jack Del Rio and the Raiders. Carr is turning out to be PRETTY DAMN GOOD and they seem to have hit GOLD with Cooper and Mack! The DRAFT has been the Raiders downfall for all these years. They were the LAUGHING STOCK of almost every draft until recent years and the results are starting to show. Let’s take a look in the mirror and apply that same logic. Dominik had YEARS of bad drafting, but it looks like Jason Licht and Lovie Smith have turned the corner and are actually drafting some decent talent for this team. That is going to be the difference going forward regardless of who is coaching this team and I’m really excited about the direction this team is going!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “10 times better than me!? Try taking a guy like Rex Grossman to a superbowl! Then you can talk to me!!”

    Holy wow!

Well, let’s see how the Titans fare in the next two years. That’s a bad decision. Wisenhunt did lead the Cardinals to the Super Bowl and lost due to a debatable TD catch by Pittsburgh.

  28. passthebuc Says:

I agree with your assessment. However, that just shows how bad Lovie is when using talent. We can probably get a 7th rd pick and he will be in the pro bowl after he goes to NE.

Outside opening day the last two years where he had 5 months to prepare, Whisenhunt has gone 1-20 as their coach. Since starting 4-0 in 2012, he’s gone 4-31 in the next 35 games he coached.

Now that you fiercely defend Lovie, yet think firing Whisenhunt is a mistake, clearly shows firing Lovie is not only not a mistake, it’s the right, smart thing to do. They are both not good head coaches, they rode luck, talent acquired by others and historic breaks for their Super Bowl appearances.

The fact Lovie got his ass handed to him by such a poor coach is a stunningly damning indictment against his own coaching acumen. He basically got his ass beat by a chump coach. We’re on our way when we fire our own chump coach. Can’t wait.

  30. celly Says:

    @D-Rome…

Its funny that you bring that up because EVERYTIME they show that replay of that TD catch, i’m looking at Holmes’ feet like, “that’s only one foot on the ground”.

  31. JAB83 Says:

Yeah… Guess L&L suck because they can’t make our sorry team Champions in Less then a year… To bad they can win with the team they inherited because we where really on our way before they got here…

The only thing a 2-14 season got us was our franchise QB… Its L&L’s fault that we didn’t do just a little bit better last year or else we would have missed out on our QB…

We only needed a coach to come in here and fix our D because we are comfortable having a poor O because hey after all we like having a sorry O… I think we should fire Lovie because he has done nothing for our team but make our D worste and give us false hope on Offence….

Bet our next coach will no how to coach on game days cause that’s all that matters…. Look at all these other coaches that win a few games right away and disappear never to be heard from again… That’s what we need…. Let’s be like the Dolphins who fire chief coach and win a couple game and get beat down by a good team… That’s what I want from my team because this Lovie guy is clueless when it comes to all the off the field responsibilities of a coach that involve hiring and firing people that help your team run properly….

Here is a thought Trolls and Fans of Depression…. Fans of Inspiration are taking their house back… Kick rocks jackwagons….

Your perspective is flawed (understandably so)

Lovie has adjusted his PHILOSOPHY and gets it…. Be can build a defence and be bad to the bones but not have an offence in place to get the team over the top…. So he started his tenure in Tampa building and offence… WE ALL CAN AGREE IT LOOKS AS PROMISING AS EVER….

    Thank you Lovie….

Now trade Vernner or whom ever you and your staff deem necessary and start retooling this D….

We can BEAT anyone and the Tweetie Bird game proved it…. This season ain’t over and I am not sold that or division is out of reach… We dam near could of should of been unbeaten in it….

    Go get them BUCS…..

31-10 BUCS win BUCS wing…. We slayed Goliath hallaluya BUCS win!!!!

5 plus sacks and we shut them out!!!!

FIRE LOVIE….he brought verner in and CANNOT teach him his Cover 2 defense give me a break

  34. godzilla13 Says:

Alterraun Verner is probably our best CB right now and even the thought of trading him is insane. Get rid of Mike Jenkins and keep Verner. Johnthan Banks has not been the same since returning from his knee injury. It is obvious by now that the trade deadline is going to come and go which is a real disappointment considering this team could be 6-2 and even at 3-4 can make a run this year with just the addition of one CB or DE. Whatever it is that Lovie has against Alterraun, if I were him I would ask for a sit down with Lovie and figure it out?

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

@OneLove and Jab83- Thank you for bringing some levity to the conversation. For instance, is it Lovie’s fault that a veteran FS gets baited into jumping a route? Or, that the supposed playmakers (David, McCoy) aren’t making plays? Clearly it must be the scheme! Clearly David wasn’t out of position on the winning touchdown for Washington!
    Be for real people!
Verner’s out for a reason, that simple. If the Bucs are not going to utilize him, cut ties and move on.
For the haters, how’s Clowney doing?!!! Must be the scheme!
    Great win! Go Bucs!

  36. LargoBuc Says:

Honestley, what t coach dosent have a ceiling in this league, short of Belichick. I would guess Lovie ceiling is kinda high considering he led a team to a SB berth. You can look at lots of teams that reached the play offs and find justification as to why the HC did or did not play a role. To give all credit to a coordinator is really grasping. Sure, they contribute but to suggest a HC plays no role in a team winning their conference, its ridiculous. Of course Tilman went to Carolina. He has very little time left in this league. Of courese he went to a contender vs a rebuilding team. Same with Trent Cole. Thank good we missed him. He has been a true clock puncher for Indy.
And btw, Lovie did more than Lane before he even came to Tampa. He could have retired and could right now, and Lane would have ZERO on Lovie! Their resumes arent even in the same league. Same with Schiano.
I have been crotical of Lovie at time. In particular his personel/roster management. But credit is due after the Atlanta game. Just like blame was due after the Redskin game.

Problem here is this logic means Jim Caldwell, Ken Whisenhunt, Lovie are all better coaches than Bruce Arians, which is utterly laughable. To get Arians would cost us multiple 1st round picks. We couldn’t give Lovie away if we offered to pay his contract.

Lovie is one of those coaches who actually is detrimental to his team’s chances through his poor gameday coaching. He’s not someone who is going to outcoach the opponent basically, and frequently gets outcoached. His teams have won in spite of him (and of course being in the NFC North when it was horrible).

Numbers don’t like, 7 of his last 8 seasons are not in the playoffs. I imagine if he coaches here 8 years and makes it once, we’re not going to be very happy about that are we?

  38. JAB83 Says:

    @bucrightroll….

I can understand what your say and its a fair thought…. This is the Only issue I have with its circular reasoning… A team wins inspire of a coach and loses because of coach… A team wins because of a bad division and loses because of a good one/bad coach….

I don’t get it honestly… Moving past the past….. If you where to think of Lovie as an offensive minded coach would not you thinking be just a little bit more on the positive side of what he has done here lately…

Don’t get me wrong…. He is deemed a Defensive coach fo good reason… However the biggest and best argument I hear is that he can’t adjust his coaching style… But then I look at what I see and my eyes tell me a different story… His philosophy is geared around building a contender on the offensive side of the ball first….

EVERYONE IS LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACES FOR ANSWERS!!!!

if you can’t adjust your perspective from afar…. Who are you to accuse someone on the front line of not adjusting to the situation the best they can… EVEN MORE SO WHEN THE RESULTS ARE STAIRING YOU IN THE FACE!!!!

Somehow we managed two 1000 yard WRs last year without an OC or QB or OLine AND a ROOKIE… hmmmm that was inspire of the coaches I guess….

Not to mention the D showed excellent improvement towards the end of the year…. Must have been a player thing as well…

Not sure why these guys on D fell off to start the season but getting rid of Frazier most likely has something to do with it…. Good or bad IDK….

But hey look at that offense…

Question to all you Trolls and Fans of Depression….. What kind of improvement are you looking for!!!!!! Now look again….. How realistic is it!!!!

    Its
    as
    Simple as that
    It really is
