The Bucs make the correct call and won’t mess with the offensive line and starting right tackle Gosder Cherilus

Demar Dotson has returned to the Buccaneers’ roster and will not start Sunday, he revealed with a somber tone this afternoon.

Dotson said he got the news this morning that he’ll be riding the bench.

“You can understand it in a way, but it’s still kind of disappointing,” said Dotson, who referenced that not disrupting “continuity” was a sensible explanation.

Joe detailed yesterday why sticking with Cherilus is the smart play for multiple reasons.

This doesn’t look too good on Lovie. A player losing his job because of an injury but it probably is a right choice. Just the way the business goes.

It’s the sensible things to do– until Gos has a bad game, he should keep starting.

However, our run blocking has not been as strong the last 2 weeks. And especially in the red zone, we seem incapable of running the ball unless the play involves some trickery (misdirection screen pass, delayed hand-off, etc.)

  3. BucTired Says:

He was probably the best player last year on a horrible horrible offensive line. But this isn’t Paul Gruber coming back from injury. If it ain’t broke…

yeah im not a fan of a player losing his job due to injury but Dotson has to understand the situation…we have a rookie qb improving each week and the oline has been very consistent…tempering with that could cause the offense as a whole to take a step back…lovie has to make some big decisions in the offseason regarding the oline..he has some players and depth to pick and choose from but I would still draft a tackle in rounds 3-5 and develop him for depth,(that would be my only offensive draft pick)..then slide Dotson to the left side and replace mankins with d.smith…I think our run blocking on the left side would be great…while cherilus may not be young, he is experienced and has preformed well this year..Dotson is too good of a player to have as backup…GO BUCS!!!

I think this might be a mistake. I understand with going with the “hot hand”, but if Dotson is fully healthy, then he is the better tackle. Gos is a solid backup, but he is not going to be your long term starter.

“This doesn’t look too good on Lovie.”

    How is that?

It’s not like he drafted Demar Dotson. And isn’t the idea for backups to become good enough to start? That’s called development.

    @unbelievable

I believe we were first in the league against the run going into the last game.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    In the NFC I mean.

If Demar Dotson has to work harder to start, all the better. This is the essence of competition.

It would look bad on Lovie if he put Dotson back in and ruined continuity. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

1 legitimate reason actually, out of the 3 you highlighted

1 was just your opinion with nothing to back up that he was below par.

2 wouldn’t make sense as Gosder is actually older than Dot

3 Would be the correct and only reason Gos keeps the job for now. The o-line has chemistry at the moment that must not be broken.

Oh and his 108 starts & Vet experience which is one in the same was another thing you mentioned in Gosder’s favor.

The line “as a whole” has allowed just 10 sacks, in the past 7 games. Which is, like I said, a credit to the chemistry building and the only real reason Gos should stay. If he keeps up his penalties Dot may be in before we know it.

  12. DavidBigBucFan Says:

He can always come in as an eligible giving us an extra tackle and power run to his side. It’s not like he has to stay on the bench. Being that he played basketball he could catch a pass or two.

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’ve never bought into the you can’t lose your job to injury? I don’t get that at all. If you’re that good you should be able to beat out your replacement.

Drew Bledsoe was a very good QB. But when he suffered internal bleeding in the Jet’s game and left the field Brady never gave him a chance to get back.

Bledsoe was a Number 1 draft pick and led the Pats to a Super Bowl.

It’s the NFL..it’s a cold business…what have you done for me lately.

Dotson will get another chance and he’ll continue to get PT as his talent and success dictate. I like Dotson. I feel for him. But I just can’t reach.

  14. Miguel Grande Says:

“I just need to be patient, My time will come.”….. Wally Pipp when asked about losing his job to Lou Gehrig.

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

The bucs have depth on the line????
    Wth!!!
When have we ever been able to say that??

  16. unbelievable Says:

@Bonzai, I was referring to our red zone offense running the ball.

  17. godzilla13 Says:

Does the OL still have continuity and chemistry if Ali Marpet does not play Sunday? Does the OL still have continuity and chemistry if Evan Smith takes his place? I bet Marpet is going to say he is healthy regardless of his condition because the message sent is that if you get injured you will lose your starting job. Or is Ali Marpet, Logan Mankins and Donovan Smith exempt from this new practice? If Gosder Cherilus goes down would he get his starting job back from Demar Dotson? Gosder Cherilus is an average RT. It is a shame Dotson has been benched due to an injury.
