“We Didn’t Do Our Job”

September 28th, 2015
Bucs DT Clinton McDonald was angry that the defense didn't shut the door on the Texans.

Clinton McDonald was angry that the defense didn’t shut the door on the Texans.

In a sad way, it was refreshing to hear two Bucs veterans who built their football resumes on winning teams, defensive tackle Clinton McDonald and guard Logan Mankins, call out their respective sides of the ball for missing the toilet yesterday in Houston.

While Mankins dropped a word that Joe cannot use on a PG-rated site to describe the Bucs offense yesterday (rhymes with “witty”), McDonald offered a more G-rated but also more passionate rant about the play of the defense.

In short, McDonald said the defense failed.

“We kind of know we didn’t do our job,” McDonald said. “We gave up 19 points on the board and it was 10 at the half. We didn’t do our job stopping those nine [additional] points. We didn’t do our job stopping a 100-yard rushing day. We didn’t do our job tackling the running back and doing the things that we do best. We left a lot of plays out on the field.”

This is the first time Joe can recall Mankins and McDonald, after the same loss, stomping their feet and speaking the unvarnished, brutal truth, and holding teammates responsible.

Joe isn’t sure if this is a turning point where Mankins and McDonald rally their teammates, or if after going 3-16 the past 19 games the duo finally has reached its boiling point and figures there’s nothing to lose by ruffling feathers.

This bucs team is like an abusive relationship. They are bad, you know it, then they turn and convince you it can turn around, and then they hurt you even more. This defense is so inconsistent and it seems almost impossible that it could be this bad for this long.

  2. Pewter Lou Says:

@GlennonGrad,I’ve been using that same analogy for a few years now.”You should leave him girl,he’s no good”,”No,he still loves me and he’s gonna change”,lol

  3. Tom Edrington Says:

Sad, just really sad, as Martin Fennelly wrote, this team does what losing teams do….they find ways to lose

  4. Bird Says:

Missing the toilet is right on point

  5. Waterboy Says:

To be honest in today’s NFL you should never lose a game when your defense holds the opponent to 19 pts. There was only 1 other game yesterday where the defense held the opposing team to less than 20 and still loss.

  6. "The kevin" Says:

This team has to win for a few years before I spend one red cent on anything bucs. Glazers you should give away free tickets for a way to say sorry for what you have produced the last 10 years. You fired the only guy to bring us a Super Bowl after firing the only guy that brought us success. You suck glazers. The fact any one person goes to a game is a sign of their stupidity.

Sell the ten you soccer idiots. Go sip tee and crumpets over in Europe somewhere and get the hell out of Tampa.

  7. Waterboy Says:

Don’t start with the Gruden talk again if he was so great he’d have another coaching job by now. Just look up his records and personnel moves while in Tampa and not to mention he coached at a time when the NFC South was weak and had Aaron Brooks and Jake Delhomme in the division.

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs not only missed the toilet, they fell through that hole in the outhouse toilet.

  9. NewTampaChris Says:

Gary Kubiak is a run-first, under-center guy. Yet he knows that Peyton Manning needs the shotgun to be successful, so Kubiak has adapted to his personnel. I don’t see that with the Bucs defense. We continue to rush four and in 2 of our 3 games, have gotten no pressure at all against two young QBs. I remember all the grief Schiano took for running stunts. In hindsight, he was saying “We’re not good enough to get there normally so we need to try something.”

  10. CC Says:

    The defense was “very disappointing”

  11. "The kevin" Says:

    @waterboy

You’re an idiot. Gruden could go coach any team he wants. He loves the job he has and has said as much. And that’s why he’s not coaching. It’s because he doesn’t want to.

And you say look at his personell moves? Really? Really? Have you not seen the moves that have been made since he’s left? Can’t believe someone could be so stupid to say look at grudens moves with what we have been forced to support the last 6-7 years.

  12. "The kevin" Says:

And jake delhomme would destroy this defense in his sleep right now today from sitting on his couch.

  13. vegasbuccaner Says:

If I don’t do my job I don’t get paid . …how about tampa start doing that and see how fast you do your job…..do they ever get tired of saying sorry to the fans?

  14. Waterboy Says:

Ooook Kevin that’s why Gruden won 0 playoff games in about 6 years after that 1 Super bowl because he was such a great coach.

  17. rjhurst813 Says:

Linebacker play is horrible. They are responsible for covering the middle of the field and making solid run fits. This defensive scheme highlights David’s weaknesses which are coverage and assignment football. He is never where he is suppose to be, all he wants to do is run downhill and over pursue his gaps. The cutback lanes in the run defense were gaping. It was the same under Schiano, teams stop running and killed us with the pass. Cam’s read option and playaction fakes are gonna kill us. That linebacker room needs to step up.

  18. Razor Ramone Says:

Defensive holding? Put your head down and look sad. Neutral zone infraction? Look stunned and hurt. DPI? Put your hands on your hips and shake your head distractedly. Same thing every week. Slappy QB? No worries man you’ll look like Dan Marino today. No name tailback? Buck up son today you’re Adrian Peterson. This defense is always late to the party. But what burns my but is they NEVER get mad!! Just a sad, slightly forlorn look as they let another lousy team off the hook. And how do you manage to make Lavonte David invisible? Haven’t really heard his name all year. Oh yeah and someone please explain to the Bucs you can only have 11 players on the field at a time!

  19. iamabuc Says:

Oh, oh. What I see here is a couple of futball veterans who have been with winning teams , who know how we should be playing, calling out the crappie defensive coaching in this team without being out of place and not pissing off the administration. That’s what this is! Think about it.

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

Let this sink in, This is what P*wter R*port wrote when they called for Coach Schiano’s Job 5 games in to 2013!!!

“It’s time for the Buccaneers to fire Schiano. It’s time for the Glazers to step in right now, this week, and relieve him of his duties in a message that would tell the players, the remaining coaches and the fans, who pay good money to attend the games, as well as those who watch the team in frustration each week on television that losing 10 out of the last 11 games is unacceptable, and that they won’t stand for it.”

  21. iamabuc Says:

I believe we shouldn’t blame our players. Think about it. How else you can justify LVD (arguably one of the best linebackers on this league) looking lost out there). Our defensive coaching is not using our players right. We need to change the defense coaches, period. Hence, #firelovie.

  22. DallasBuc Says:

You know what happens to most of us who don’t do our jobs?

  23. DallasBuc Says:

Realist- thanks for that. Interesting to say the least

  24. Bucsfaninchina Says:

Wow. Lets chill out ith the LVD criticism for a second?

Who can name the leading tackler for either team yesterday? Because that answer is none other than Lavonte David with 14 tackles. If you’re looking for splash plays how about we look at the LB who drpopped 2 or 3 int’s, being Kwon Alexander. LVD is no secret, teams are trying to keep the ball away from him and he is still making plays.

  25. Bucsfaninchina Says:

@NewTampaChris listen to any Bronco’s related media and you will hear howling out the lack of adaptation to Peyton and the system he has been running his entire career.

  26. Another J Says:

The defensive line keeps getting diced up by back up quarterbacks.
Ryan Mallet didn’t get pressured very much at all.
McCoy gets paid too much to be so quiet when it’s game time.
I don’t think our Defensive Ends even sniffed at the quarterback, The Linebackers couldn’t make easy tackles, and The corners were abused all day!

Why did we keep trying to cover Hopkins with a 5″8 defensive back?
Mike Jenkins is pure garbage, and Verner is regressing!
Sterling Moore made some decent plays.

Chris Conte is a liability in coverage, and penalty waiting to happen!

  27. Rojas_ Says:

I think LVD skills is better suited in a 3-4 role like Von Miller.

  28. Waterboy Says:

LVD played well overall but I also saw him miss several tackles that should’ve been for losses but turned into 1st downs. He was in position to make plays.

  29. Jason McLaurin Says:

Mcdonald can only be mad with himself because defense played a great game again and looks to have found their identity. If anything Winston should be killing himself once he gets in the film room for the timing of his distributions. I felt more targets could have been spreaded around to guys like Myers, Sims, and V jax hell even Murphy could’ve gotten more. Instead we watched WWinston fall in love with Mike Evans all day and he gave out in the end due to exhaustion. 17 targets to one player will result in a low completion percentage so I dont think these guys should be that hard on themselves once they look back at the film. They played for WINSton and fought for LOViE and lost thanks to the kicker in the end.###play4WINStonfight4LOViE

  30. Bucsfaninchina Says:

LVD missed a couple tackles? Stop the presses! He got paid now he is checking out!!!!!

This was a game of missed opportunities. Dropped passes, dropped interceptions, missed kicks, no third down conversions, no pass rush on a patchwork line. Not on LVD.

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

Conte hauled in his contribution to Bucs penalty yards.

  32. bucsbedabest Says:

Why are people so critical of Conte? So he did not have a INT and a forced fumble yesterday? Someone said that Conte is a liability in coverage? Houston did not throw at him yesterday. In total he has had 4 passes thrown at him with 2 completions and that is a liability? We were beat by a better team in their house. A team we could have beat. The defense had 7 missed tackles yesterday. Guess how many YTD? 28. Yes, 28 missed tackles in just 3 games. WTF?

  33. DB55 Says:

McDonald did his job and then some. Not too sure about the guy who lined up next to him though. I think the other believes if it a run play he should get out of the way. Maybe his contract says it NOT his job to tackle running backs.

Hang in there McDonald soon you and Melton will right the ship.
