Comparing Lovie’s Performance

September 28th, 2015

LovieJagsJoe’s already hearing a renewed round of calls for Lovie Smith’s job after the thorough Bucs collapse yesterday on offense, special teams and defense. Welcome to the roller coaster of emotion.

For that crowd, Joe’s got two things to watch.

First, Team Glazer surely keeps a close watch on league trends and happenings. So with that in mind, the Atlanta Falcons have a brand new head coach, a first-time head coach, defense-focused Dan Quinn. In three games, he has as many wins as Lovie does in the last 19 games.

If the Bucs lose a lot of games this season, and the Falcons are winners after booting Dirk Koetter and having garbage play from their offensive and defensive lines last year, then Joe thinks Team Glazer would frown greatly on that combination.

Second, there’s a crowd of fans who believe continuity is critical at the head coaching position. So Joe will point to Jacksonville, where defense-first Gus Bradley got a third season despite two bad ones to start his regime. If he flops, then Team Glazer might be influenced by that result. If Bradley succeeds, that also could help sway an eventual decision on Lovie.

Food for thought.

Of course, Lovie can kill all this angry-fan chatter with the first home win of his Bucs tenure on Sunday against the 3-0 Panthers. If not, Lovie will take the conversation into the following week, a Sunday clash in Tampa against the Jaguars. After that comes the Bucs’ bye week.

Damn, the Bucs absolutely have to win one of the next two games. No excuses.

Lovie Smith projected first 20 game record: 3-17
Lane Kiffin 20 game NFL record: 5-15

I think that just about sums up how atrocious Lovie has been as coach. I didn’t have high hopes when he was hired but even I’m shocked they are this bad,

  2. Bucsfaninchina Says:

The Bucs are a mentally weak @ss team who cant handle the first sight of adversity. Something goes wrong and the flame goes out. Losing breeds a losing mentality and this coaching staff is doing nothing to reverse that trend.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

BUCS Fans are just simply tired of all the excuses for losing

Because they all sound the same after Gruden left

  4. Wombat Says:

It’s only 3 games, but I bet Mariota is so freakin’ happy he was drafted second!!

  6. FortMyersDave Says:

Joe if Lovie loses the next 2 games at RJS (Carolina and a bad Jag team) then is it really time to consider doing what the raiders did last year and replacing the HC during the bye week and elevating Koetter to interim head coach and Frazier to DC? Realistically can we expect the Bucs to win more than 3 or 4 games if they can not beat the jags at home???? What progress can Lovie show the Glazers if the team goes 3-13 or 4-12? This is not like Dungy’s ’96 squad that started 1-8 before finishing 6-10; the team is far too undisciplined and makes mistakes in every facet of the game which has to at least be partially attributed to the head coach. Look if Lovie can get to the bye at 2-3 then I can say that the team has made some progress but if it loses the next 2 games; particularly if one of the next 2 is a blowout loss like what we seen vs Mariota and the Titans (Carolina probably is licking its chops at the potential of Cam passing TDsto TE Olsen, running bootlegs for big yards and making RBs Tolbert and Jonathon Stewart look like Blue did this Sunday); well then maybe its time to let Lovie walk…. JMHO but its really getting to be time for Lovie to quit making excuses and get all hands on deck and put together a solid 4 quarter effort and a W at RJS… Hell Joe, we fans have not seen a win at RJS since the Bucs beat the Bills back in late 2013; Sciano’s last win….

  7. Ray Rice Says:

One coach I did want them to get before he went to Arizona was Arians. FUK!

  8. Ray Rice Says:

With that being said. I still have faith in the TEAM. #RIDEORDIE

  9. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

The coaching continuity argument holds no merit with respect to a coach who has no record of success with his current team, unless there is some significant improvement along the way. The argument otherwise only has merit when a coach with a successful track record with the team runs aground. You give that guy a chance to reboot.

This entire organization is in shambles. The stakes are higher than ever because of Jaboo. Screw around and ruin him, and you will guarantee another decade of futility.

The Glazers need someone to tell them enough is enough. They do not have the capabilities to run a successful on the field operation. Proof is in the pudding. Three terrible coaching hires and two screw ups at GM. Are we supposed to suffer through another blindfolded effort to hit the bullseye? Enough.

Go retain an executive search firm with NFL credentials to recommend a CEO. Hire and then empower that CEO to build your organization top to bottom.

Don’t touch anything in the meantime. Malcolm was smart enough to know that, which is why he did not fire Sam Whyche immediately, which was good considering his 1995 draft. Leave Lovie and his staff, including Licht, in place for the balance of this year. Hire the CEO and turn him or her loose at the end of the regular season. It is time. We should all yell this at the top of our lungs – the Glazers need to fire themselves from the football operations!

  10. Clodhopper Says:

It’s been 19 games and his defense allows the same things week in and week out with only a couple exceptions. And zero signs he has learned one thing. Offense with Jameis and Koetter get the benifit of the doubt with me but not defensive minded head coach with a sh1tty ass defense for 2 years in a row

I’ve seen enough. I’m ready to move on.

  11. ndog Says:

Anthem the fact that you pine for Gruden just shows how little you know about football. Gruden and Bruce Allen are two of the main reasons we are in this mess. Remember Charlie Garner, Tim Brown, Todd Stusie, Carnell Williams (could have had Aaron Rodgers) and countless others. If you think Gruden was great shakes at building a team you sould just give up watching the sport. He is a closer of a great team that did a great job of bringing in vets to put us over the top. After that it was getting bad quickly.

  12. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    This team is

    -Undisciplined

    -Plays uninspired with no fire

The team’s play is indicative of the coaching which steams from the HC

….I really think this team is no longer motivated by Lovie anymore

It’s a really sad thing to see When you have a rookie QB that shows more motivation and fire than the HC and the players (except for a small few)

  13. tmaxcon Says:

Even if one dismisses the horrendous win loss record Lovie has, his absolute failure with free agent signings and his hand picked system specific players is the real long term concern. undisciplined play and wilting with any little adversity including the players lack of heart is second most concerning. Those preaching patience with Lovie are not looking at the big picture and the long term consequences of his 43 million in wasted cap space and the fact he will leave this team with a bunch of injury prone system specific has beens when he is replaced at years end.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

Let this sink in, This is what P*wter R*port wrote when they called for Coach Schiano’s Job 5 games in to 2013!!!

“It’s time for the Buccaneers to fire Schiano. It’s time for the Glazers to step in right now, this week, and relieve him of his duties in a message that would tell the players, the remaining coaches and the fans, who pay good money to attend the games, as well as those who watch the team in frustration each week on television that losing 10 out of the last 11 games is unacceptable, and that they won’t stand for it.”

  15. Bucco Brice Says:

They better win both or …BYE BY THE BYE, LOVIE…”simple as that”..

  16. TAC Says:

How does the team deal with the continued losing, and adversity, that is all that matters concerning this HC. He is failing hard so far, especially with his defense.

He will lose the locker room, especially on the defense, nobody will come out and say that, but it is just the reality of the NFL.

Once that happens, and they all will know, he will be gone.

  17. flmike Says:

My concern is this defense is no longer a valid defense, part of the T2 is intimidation, well, you can’t intimate WR or TE’s anymore, John Lynch would never make it in this NFL, that NFL is gone, you have to work within the confines of the current league and the T2 and it’s variants are no longer valid, hence Lovie is no long valid, his old school D is just that, old school. The game has passed him by and it’s time to say good-bye to him and his antiquated defense.

  18. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The bucs are not in this mess becasue of Gruden that was 10 years ago….they are in this continual mess because of Dominick and Licht and Lovie who have had terrible player personnel moves…Lovie brought in his guys to play his crappy defensive system and they are terrible…conte, major wright, jennings, jenkins…they all are terrible the only good one is a drafted player by dominick….LVD, GMC, Mike evans, jameis, Kwon, donovan smith are the only home grown players the bucs have over the past 8 years that are worth building around and GMC and LVD are buying into the Lovie losing mentality and its terrible
Quinn came in hands on fired up and that permeates throughout all phases of the organization where lovie is lovei dovie
    FIRE LOVIE

  19. Buc Em.....Section 318 Says:

The troops will rally and cage the Panthers & Jaguars. How does 3-2 sound going into bye week?

  20. Buccfan37 Says:

It looks like every word is on notebook paper with lines running through them on this article. It must be just me, nobody else mentioned it.

  21. gg720 Says:

Lovie’s ability to be a good coach have long passed him by. His defensive backfield in Cover 2 isn’t working and could not cover anyone yesterday. Jenkins, Conte and Jennings looked lost and hopeless. They and the linebackers had trouble tackling anybody. He refuses to blitz and expects his backfield to cover people for 7 to 8 seconds.

Team was undisciplined as usual and penalties were flying everywhere. Same every week. Offensive play calling was everything going downfield instead of maintaining drives with short 6 or 7 yard passes. No draws or screen passes or getting backs in open field to catch and run except one play to Smith. Where are the quick passes to anybody? Special teams look just as incompetent with Rainey dropping the first two punts. And worse was the kicking by Brindza. This team looks like a high school team competing with the big boys starting with the head coach. Please cut him sooner than later and try to make something out of this season.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians wanted his team to know that anyone easing up in the second half of Sunday’s blowout win over the San Francisco 49ers would need to find a new job.

“If you relax, I’ll be looking for new people,” Arians told his team, according to Paul Calvisi of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “Put your foot on their throat.”
Take note lovie That’s what you do to win in the nfl

  24. John McKillop Says:

@Bucs Fan Since ’76, agreed, I’ve been saying that for some time, this team needs to hire a president of football operations, a Bill Polian type. There are no football people between Licht and the Glazers only business people and the only one that should stay is Mike Greenburg, who negotiates player contracts. @ndog, I agree with you also, Gruden was a good coach, horrible at player personnel. Not one draft pick remains from his days, surest way to run a franchise into the ground. I give Licht the benefit of the doubt as I feel his two drafts will work out well, now work on the defensive side of the ball.

  25. This Guy Right Here Says:

I expected the offense to have its ups-and-downs. But they’ve showed consistent progress since week1 vs Tenn.

Lovie’s D??? I expected this group to be our team’s strength, But they just keep getting carved up by less than average QBs, and just they let some unknown backup RB run for the 2nd highest yds in week2!!!

Lovie just cant coach up his D, let alone this enitre team..

He’s not built for this league in 2015!!!! Cut Bait, Glazers!

Lets see how Koetter does as interim, see if he has what it takes to be a HC, or if we need to hire someone else in 2016.

  26. GhostofSchiano Says:

Still like to know who made the decision to cut Barth and Murray for Brindza? How’s that working for us

  27. Joseph Mamma Says:

Yeah speaking of the Falcons, they look better without Dirk Koetter. They fired a pretty good head coach and looks they hired a great one. This team is going to compete for last place again. Lovie is consistent, give him that. The owners don’t care, hell looks like Lovie doesn’t care that much. Owner’s get paid either way, Lovie gets paid either way. Fans get screwed, at least whatever fans are left.

  28. GhostofSchiano Says:

We got the kitty kats coming up then the bye and on the road @ the native americans and dixie chicks. Anything less than 500 ball lovie must go

  29. GhostofSchiano Says:

500 ball is 2 wins 2 losses. If we go 1-3 during that stretch then the glazers must act

  30. Buc'n Enough Says:

It’s the clown outfits…eerr new uniforms…clowns play like a circus.
Put the old pewter and red ones back!! At least there was once a winning tradition with those uni’s….

  31. Brent Says:

Can we do better than Lovie next year? If we can’t say for sure screw it. I’d hire a consulting firm at the end of the year headed by wolf polian etc to make recommendations for changes to our organization. If we can get a strong recommendation for hc then definitely do it. Ideally Lovie gets 6-7 wins this year and earns another year. That way we keep our team in tact. Anything less we gotta search. And the glazers need to hire professional help to do search using proven football gurus.

  32. bucsbedabest Says:

tmaxcon/ealist/dallas Says: 84-79 – .515% Lovie still has a winning record. Lovie still can’t catch, kick or tackle. It is going to be 2 to 3 more years. Wait on it!

@Joe – Just a thought. How about you have a “fire Lovie” section every day so the realdallastmax can have their own forum and the rest of us can just skip over it?

  33. pelbuc Says:

Amazingly, L&L turned a losing mentality into a worse situation. I agree Glazers need to hire a football guy asap and start the housecleaning. Admit you made another mistake, cut your losses and move on. Don’t give me the continuity excuse crap, look at Atlanta. Trade as many stiffs as possible before the deadline, this season is lost anyway.

  34. GhostofTedford Says:

If we are 1 – 4 by the bye, good bye lovie and good riddance.

It’s gonna be 2-3 more weeks in a dream world. Did you know Lovie’s record against teams with records of .500 or better is an outstanding 31-53. He just can’t beat average to above average teams at all. No one wants to start over, but no one wants to be nothing either. Best time to fire Lovie was end of last year but better late than never.

  36. The Buc Realist Says:

Lovie still has a winning record.
(that record is dropping fast isn’t it!!!)

Lovie still can’t catch, kick or tackle.
( from his time in Tampa, he can not coach it either!!!)

It is going to be 2 to 3 more years. Wait on it!
( Thats one way, Or like Atlanta, Get a better coach and be competitive now!!!)

  37. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Offenses on teams with good defenses tend to make plays against other defenses. It is pretty telling that our offense is still struggling considering our defense is “supposed” to be good.
