“It Was Totally Unacceptable”

Bucs CB Alterraun Verner wasn't fond of how his team played yesterday.

Bucs CB Alterraun Verner wasn’t fond of how his team played yesterday.

One of the nicest guys on the Bucs roster came out firing last night, and Joe was heartened to see someone PO’ed after such an insulting performance by the defense.

The words from Bucs cornerback Alterraun Verner were direct and clear: The Bucs shat all over themselves yesterday.

“It was totally unacceptable,” Verner said. “Nobody is happy with how we performed out there. Regardless of who we were playing or who was out there, no way we should let somebody put up 42 on us or 21 in the first quarter.

“I don’t even care about the pick-six. It is very disappointing. We were very confident, very optimistic. We still are. We still are a good defensive unit even though we didn’t show that today.”

Well, as much as Joe appreciates Verner’s candor, there is nothing to suggest the Bucs are even a below-average team defensively. Right now, they are a horrible defensive team.

Up next, Drew Brees and the Saints. Fun times!

For about the first two or three plays I thought the defense looked hyped up and flying around. Looked good. Excited. Then came Major Wright’s helmet-to-helmet penalty. Then the defense played timid and scared.

Of course we all know what happened next.

This tells me one thing: This team just isn’t mentally tough. SMH.

  2. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Anybody care about ASJ high-stepping it in to the endzone being down 35 points?

  3. Bucco Brice Says:

Bucs fan from the 70’s here and this is the most upsetting and disgusting loss in the history of the franchise – Leeman Bennett era included. We’ve seen 3 games now in 2 years where we looked like a high school team against the 70’s Steelers. 1 bad game and you can let it go and get over it, but 3? I backed Lovie for a bit because I loved “Dungy ball” and Lovie is trying to be a Dungy clone. HE IS NOT TONY DUNGY BY A LONG SHOT. FIRE NOW!!! He’s taking us no where. We need to start anew as soon as possible!!!!!

  4. Bucco Brice Says:

    @Scotty in Fat Antonio..
That’s disgusting too for sure. There’s nothing to celebrate at that point. Are they just out for a sunday picnic? Show some urgency and anger in losing. Brutal 🙁

  5. FortMyersDave Says:

I’m glad Verner is PO’d; it shows he cares and was embarrassed. How about some scathing words from the GM, the head coach or one of the Glazer lads? Their silence is damning as it makes the common fan feel that they are okay with this slop as long as the franchise is turning out a profit… Right now I would love a team ownership intervention: someone putting a fire under Lovie…. The Jerry Jones and Robert Krafts of the world may be loud mouth blowhards but they care about winning and does anyone think that either of those franchises would tolerate the effort Lovie has put forth in his first 17 games???? Hell no I am afraid. Right now morale in Buc land is at a low only matched by the Leeman Bennett years; this is a poorly coached team; ill prepared and below average talent; a recipe for losing. Thanks Lovie and Licht. Glazers: how long do you let these morons embarrass your franchise???

  6. Louis Friend Says:

Bucco Brice, Leeman Bennett was awful, but to his credit the roster matched his awfulness. Lovie has a better roster, by far, and is producing equal results.

It took 117 games for Gruden to lose 3 games by more than 25+ points. Lovie did it in 17.

  7. Clodhopper Says:

No offense to Verner. I think he is a swell guy but this is just copy paste from every other after game interview from last year. Nothing has changed and nothing will with that dolt for a HC running the show

  8. FortMyersDave Says:

Scotty, Bucco: by the time ASJ made an @ss of himself with that play I was too concerned with everything else: the lack of preparation, the lack of talent, the apathy, nothing has improved from last season and that is on Lovie and Licht. I just hope ASJ gets a few more opportunities to make a fool of himself; I bet the refs are already have their radar tuned to him after the Captain Morgan debacle of last yer which really did cost the Bucs any chance of a win vs the ATL last year. This year it simply did not matter and the guy made himself look like a me guy, not caring that his team was getting drilled again…

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There were only three good things I took from yesterday’s game.

    ASJ can catch.
Glad Kwon is getting experience because Carter is already injured.
We saved a bunch of money on high priced kickers….the ones we have are fine.

  10. Bucky23 Says:

Does it piss anyone else off that the bucs continuously get embarrassed and Lovie just stands their with a blank look on his face, completely emotionless? At least act like you care??

  11. Bucco Brice Says:

    @Louis Friend…
exactly, Bennett inherited crap…McKay’s guys where all gone our at the end of their careers…this team is far more talented…it’s coaching, “simple as that” and Lovie specifically…

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

ASJ high stepping is another example of poor coaching. Where is the discipline from the coaching staff to have him know ahead of time to not do that? When he did that, I literally turned my head away in embarrassment. He ruined a TD, which doesn’t come around too often in these parts. You think Bellicheck would stand for that? Coughlin? Tomlin? Hell, I don’t even think Rex Ryan would stand for that. But Lovie is going to continue with his ho hum attitude about it, just as he does for everything else. Just once I’d really love to see Lovie scream some MF’s at somebody – anybody!

  13. Joehelldeloxley Says:

    @Scotty in Fat Antonio
    @Bucco Brice

I don’t understand why you are so upet by that. it was clearly not the good timing but still, when was the last time he scored two TDs in a game ?

I’m perhaps naive (surely) but it was perhaps a way to wake up his teamates. I don’t know not a big issue for me.

  14. tdtb2015 Says:

    Damning Words For JoeBucsfan.com

    AMERICAS QUARTERBACK

So Joe who do you recommend for the Bucs to pick in the draft?

High School QBs throw those kind of interceptions.
Drafting high school prospects does not work in the NFL!

The 2015 Bucs have earned the title AGAIN – Laughingstock III.
Are we a dynasty of futility?

I LOST TRUST IN Lovie & Winston!!!

  15. Bucky23 Says:

Sucks being a huge bucs fan in central Illinois. People always ask me why I’m a Bucs fan. I’m running out of reasons…….

  16. Pawel Says:

ASJ did it because he was the only good player and on his second Toichdown, so what. The defense blew this game.

  17. Tom Edrington Says:

The sideline face of Lovie Smith could indicate that he is highly constipated.

  18. Louis Friend Says:

@Bucky23 – Central Illinois – cool. Likewise, I’m in Bloomington. A long way from Tampa but I can still smell the stink of yesterday’s game from here.

  19. Bucky23 Says:

@louis — awesome. At least I’m not the only one. I’m from Decatur.. So know Bloomington well. We’ll have to watch a game sometime. Maybe when they product on the field doesn’t make us vomit.

  20. Clodhopper Says:

ASJ high stepping bothered me at the time. But on the list of things that ticked me off yesterday that very far down on the list and I quickly got over it

  21. Vincente Says:

Pissed off huh….I have been pissed off since they fired Gruden. Another year same ol story. But it’s expected. Oh well. Here’s to hoping they turn it around.

  22. David Says:

I think the People pulling for the Bucs to Draft Mariota got their Proof yesterday as well as the Winston Lovers. I say Fire Lovie, Licht and Team Glazer!!!!! Wasn’t it fun watching what might have been? Bucs will regret picking Fred Sanford over Mariota for a very long time. Titans look like a playoff bound team playing a Pee-Wee league team. The funniest thing about it all was how un-prepared Jameis looked compared to Mariota’s quick decision making and deadly accuracy. The reason is because all the Winston lovers thought he was so much more pro ready, LMFAO! Mariota was a class act too, no talk, just actions on & off the field! Lovie & Licht are both idiots as well as Team Glazer for allowing them to throw away the future on this BUM!!!!!!!! I love my Bucs but WTH! How much do you take before it’s enough, yesterday’s game was pathetic & don’t even try to say that Winston just needs more time, Mariota didn’t need more time to whoop his Ass! We are the Laughing Stock of the League Period! Thanks again for Ten more years of SUCCANEER Football! Sincerely, long time fan! FIRE LOVIE, LICHT, TEAM GLAZER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jameis Christ, Yeah Right! Whoever said that, you need to be slapped!

  23. nate_tweetz Says:

    1) Our defense was flat-footed all day.
    2) It seems like they were all looking at Mariota while WR’s ran by them.
    3) Mariota 1 step dropped all game to WRs that were never taken off their routes.
    4) The DL was manhandled by the Titans OL in the run game especially.
    5) LB’s bit on the play action like a teething infant all game long.
    6) DB’s played 5-8 yards off the WRs all game long leaving the underneath wide open.
    7) Then, on top of that, couldn’t tackle in the open field.
    8) LVD looked like the rookie out there, not Kwon.
    9) If you know Mariota is getting the ball out quick how about getting your hands up DL?
    10) Lovie made absolutely no adjustments yesterday. It was pitiful. How did I know that Kendall Wright was the Titans most explosive weapon, but the Bucs coaching staff didn’t? How did I know the Titans would run a read-option like offense, but the Bucs didn’t? How did I know that you can’t have your DB’s 6 yards off the line of scrimmage when the Titans are 2 yards from the goal line and the Bucs didn’t? I’m not asking these things to give myself credit. I’m saying it because I’m an average dude that could see these things and a $5 million dollar a year coach can’t and hasn’t seen it in over a season!!!

  24. Bucco Brice Says:

I’m on a remote island in Canada…there’s a reason I’m the ONLY bucs fan here and the “face of the franchise” here too…oh, the torture!

  25. nate_tweetz Says:

Mariota had a good day. I will not take anything away from his day. But for those of you ready to anoint him as the GOAT, relax! Mariota looked EXACTLY like RG3 and Colin Kaepernick there entire first seasons. They ran the same types of offenses. Once defenses catch on to his tendencies, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts. I am not saying that Mariota will be a bad QB. I never have. But to crown the guy as the GOAT already is a little much. Mariota will never see a worse NFL defense in his life compared to what he saw yesterday. That is a fact. Ohio State gave him more problems than we did.

  26. tortured orlando bucs fan Says:

I’m only 29 but I’ve watched the bucs regularly for about 16-17 years….I’ve been through morris, Schiano, chuckies qb struggles….but I have never, ever seen such a pathetic performance by the bucs, ever. Last year, no qb, oc, or ol were all valid excuses, the year before, schiano and Freeman/glennon were valid excuses….this year (well, no ol is still a valid excuse) no excuse for a home opener against vegas’ projection as the nfls worst team…..I was pro jameis over mariota the entire time….but now it’s 99.9% obvious we clearly drafted the wrong qb

  27. David Says:

Wasn’t there just an article titled-“We’re Tennessee Ready”! LMFAO

  28. Justinfitzgerald@yahoo.com Says:

Had to read that line three times to make sure I was reading it correctly, “the Bucs shat all over themselves yesterday”…truer words were never written. Ive never seen a team implode as quickly as the Bucs….happened last year against the Falcons and the Ravens, then again yesterday versus the Titans. In a blink of an eye, we give up 21. No other team does that with such regularity.

  29. mjc Says:

Who cares if the players are mad.

Enough is enough. Lovie is 2-15 and if you put it all together.

    1. Bad FA signings
    2. Not addressing needs of team
    3. Outcoached every game
    4. GM who is clueless
    5. No home wins since 2013
    6. Players don’t care – no consequences.
    7. No depth anywhere on roster
    8. An embarrassment to Tampa Bay Area.

If we start 0-4 you have to fire Lovie. Cant have 2 wins in 20 games.

  30. jo_mama Says:

The only thing I’m rooting for is more blow outs. This season is over. We get the number 1 pick. Trade our RG3 bust. Make Glennon the starter and build through the draft.

    And of course fire lovie

  31. David Says:

Pro-Ready Winston looked like “Marston” in Quigley Down Under. Mariota Looked like Quigley!

“Some men are born in the wrong century. I think I was born on the wrong continent. … Oh, by the way, you’re fired.” ~ Marston
“This ain’t Dodge City. And you ain’t Bill Hickok.” ~ Quigley
“I said I never had much use for one. I never said I didn’t know how to use it.” ~ Quigley
Mariota was the one that looked Pro-Ready not Winston!

  32. Cannon Says:

The sad part about the qb comparison argument is that I can’t quite determine if Mariota was that good, or if our D was that bad.

My feeling is that our D was just simply that bad.

As many have pointed out, 90% of the plays involved Mariota taking a 2 step drop (basically, standing up) and tossing it 5-8 yards down the middle. It was open each and every time. Add in atrocious tackling by the Bucs, and voila, you have a meltdown.

Jameis played like a rookie. I hope he get’s better, but his two interceptions were appalling. If he is truly a football savant like Joe says he is, then he will learn from those mistakes. However, he has a long way to go. He has a long windup, and he stared down his targets worse than Josh Freeman. Watch the tape. Many throws were horribly telegraphed.

Doug Martin looked good. Our first (and arguably) best touch down drive involved a heavy, heavy dose of Martin. I thought that was smart by Koetter, after Winston’s early struggles.

That being said, where were our 3 step drops? Where were our quick slants? Why do we continue to ask our QB’s to do 5 and 7 step drops behind a porous offensive line? Going further, when Winston did get protection, he often had no where to throw. How is it that our receivers always seemed to be covered? How many play action fakes did we see Winston look down field, and then have to either tuck and run or throw it away?

Finally, why the hell didn’t Lovie throw a red flag on Vincent Jackson’s touchdown? Sure, it probaly wouldn’t have won us the game, but Jimminy Christmas, show a little fire!

  33. mike10 Says:

Verner looked like dog $hit yesterday!… what the hell was the guys name he was covering?…

  34. bucrightoff Says:

Mariota definitely is tougher to handicap because the Bucs defense was awful, but it’s not hard to see the things that can make him great, the very quick release and the deadly accuracy in short to intermediate throws. He made some very nice throws yesterday.

  35. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs sank further into the mud of the worst team in the NFL. Seriously stuck there.

  36. FortMyersDave Says:

bucrightoff: I suspect the Browns will make Mariota look a bit more “average” next Sunday. Why? Well Cleveland actually has a decent defense (though the Jets had a good day against them) and I think they look at some film and determine that the Bucs D did absolutely nothing right. Cleveland will come up with some wrinkles and let all the Mariota fans out there realize that he is still a rookie and will have bad days. do not annoint him ROY yet; jeez he only lit up Lovie’s defense for God’s sake?!?!?!? Could the Titans be 2-0? Absolutely, but it will be by winning a 9-6 type of slugfestas the Browns are rather offensively challenged like our Bucs but I think the Brown D will get to Mariota a bit and not allow him to score multiple TDs next week.

  37. John Ensch Says:

There were to many of these horrible games last year for me to think it even means anything for one of the Bucs to suggest they played badly. The players still collect their pay checks after the game. This team and especially certain players is way over hyped by the media. It’s becoming more and more obvious tha Licht and Lovie have definitely been over hyped.

  38. bucrightoff Says:

The Browns D just got lit up by Jets with Fitzpatrick as QB. I could see Mariota having another good day next week. Long term two weeks doesn’t matter, but the heat on Lovie if Mariota looks great two weeks in a row and the Bucs look awful going to 0-2 will be intense, if it weren’t already

  39. Dan Art Says:

Never seen a defense so fooled by play action reads. Fast LBs that were too concerned about stopping Mariota from running than cutting off passing lanes and unable to seal the edge in the run game.

Clearly Winston didn’t play well, but damn the offensive line and play calling could be much improved. HE IS A ROOKIE!!! Run the ball, 2 step drops, quick plays, screens, just keep him on the field let him find a groove. Mariota didn’t shred our team apart the play calling was just appropriate and they just did their jobs.

I also hope they took Doug out because the game was over and no reason to over work him because he and ASJ were the ONLY positives coming out of week one. Next Sunday better have a hefty serving of the Dougernaut, and I play against him in fantasy next week!

I honestly feel we will be fine but we got to have better play calling and prepare better on Defense.

  40. Alstott up the gut Says:

Mike10…. I couldn’t agree more with you! Hey Verner, Honestly look in the mirror…. You were horrible!! You gave up chunks of yards constantly!! This feels exactly like last year. Down several TD’s before the 1st qtr is even over!!! Get a grip guys….

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

It sure was unacceptable Mr Verner. And YOU..were a large part of it.

  42. Mario-Da Says:

We made history yesterday and not even the awful expansion team of 76 lost a home opener in the fashion we did. If you have offensive line questions wouldn’t you rather go with a qb that can atleast extend the play with his feet when the pocket is collapsing? I’m hoping I’m wrong about Jameis but he looks like a Freeman clone that locks on one receiver and throws to the wrong team. I feel we should of gave Shiano more time because aleast they played with a bit more urgency and motivation. I know it’s only one game but the way the offence and defence played with the amount of talent around was pathetic and unacceptable especially by the 2nd worst team with another rookie qb. Here is to another losing season.
