All Phases Loss

Are the messy Bucs taking the identity of their head coach?

Today was the kind of Bucs loss that gets a head coach on the hot seat fired.

Why? Because it was an all-phases loss. Special teams? Dreadful. Offense? Nine points and sloppy. Defense? Abused by weak opponent. Penalties? Another double-digit afternoon.

Did the Bucs look like the relentlessly physical defense their head coach demands they be? No.

Joe’s not calling for Lovie Smith’s head, just making the point that the Bucs were beaten badly, and they beat themselves. That’s the worst combination.

No, Lovie doesn’t drop passes, or make off-the-mark throws. He doesn’t kick easy field goal or rush the passer. But teams do take on the identity of their head coach. And the Bucs have looked like a mess in two of three games this season.

This team could easily be 0-3 if Brees had any kinda arm.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

If you are surprised, Then you have not been paying attention!!!

  3. scottfitz09@gmail.com Says:

Dirk for HC. The offense looked great minus Evans stonehands… Bad calls too Obrien 3-3

  4. DallasBuc Says:

Nole- the criticism is heavy. Time to flash the new AAmerican Express card!

  5. MadMax Says:

I swear you could transplant Lovies brain into a birds head and it would fly backwards…

  6. bucrightoff Says:

Lovie is latin for loser football coach.

  7. GerbilsGoneWild Says:

He does blow two timeouts for defensive personell issues and gets penalized for for it in the 2nd!!!

  8. Ray Rice Says:

MF’s let Mallet pick them apart…… Mallet! Fuk! Don’t get me started on the penalties!

  9. jb Says:

Lovie’s gotta go, simple as that. This is possibly the worst coached team in the league. We’re watching today and asking one another if these guys even practice.
Why is Mike Jenkins even on this team? Not only can Lovie not coach, he’s a terrible judge of defensive talent!

  10. lightningbuc Says:

    LOVIE SUCKS!

    LICHT SUCKS!

    JABOO SUCKS!

    THE KICKER SUCKS!

    JOE KNOWS QBs!

  11. GhostofSchiano Says:

Disappointing loss to say the least, decent pass protection, jj watt handled better than I expected. Where’s Connor Barth ? Patrick Murray? This game should have been a win. I want to know who made thr decision to keep this kicker and cut the other two.

  12. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Fire Lovie at the bye.

  13. MadMax Says:

    Look at the bright side…..Bosa!

  14. Rhonnie Says:

Once again, how is this loss on Jameis? His #1 receiver drops at least three passes, the running game sucks, and his kicker missed a PAT and two FGs. Chill out Oregon man

  15. vegasbuccaner Says:

And with the number one pick in the 2016 draft at Tampa Bay Buccaneers take?

  16. GhostofSchiano Says:

Let me guess, the same guy signing Bears retreads

  17. Clodhopper Says:

If I was Realist hater, I’d be feeling as dumb as Lovie Smith right about now. When u are 31-72, its not being negative, it’s being a realist!

  18. DallasBuc Says:

But hey, the self-righteous deniers say “just wait on it”

  19. GerbilsGoneWild Says:

Lol Jenkins got beat twice when the wr whiffed it and acted like he did something. Something to advocate. Smh, I don’t understand why he and joe are so high on banks. Kids garbage… got beat twice this week and several times last week…

  20. BucfaninMi Says:

I see a lot of other first and second year coaches succeed, but not here. No excuses. Atlanta had 2 first year coaches do well. Lovie sucks!

  21. MadMax Says:

    BOSA! BOSA! BOSA!

  22. Bucsrsoft Says:

Lovie is soft and our defense is softer. Winston looks like best player on the team, Which is very disappointing considering all the “talent” we have.

  23. vegasbuccaner Says:

    And our uniform still suck

  24. bucrightoff Says:

This loss isn’t on Jameis, but he has to play better when he gets that kind of protection against a top notch DLine. Yes there were probably 8 drops, but there were also 6 or 7 misses he has to make.

  25. GerbilsGoneWild Says:

Jamis played like garbage. But this isn’t completely on him.

  26. Skyline Crew Says:

Terrible team on all fronts. Been terrible for 3 games now.

  27. lightningbuc Says:

    It Takes Time!

    LOL!

    THIS TEAM SUCKS……..AGAIN!

    JOE KNOWS QBs!

  28. Marlow Says:

Let’s start with “Americ QB” not being able to throw the ball accurately. Next let’s go to our 2nd year player, Evans, who could not have even caught cold today. Not only was Winston inaccurate with most throws, he forced too many balls to Evans. VJ was invisible besides his one-legged non-touchdown.
The O-line did a decent job in protection, but was quite awful in the running game. The defense held the Texans pretty well until the end of the game, but missed a lot of tackles. I did not see us get better as a team today. The future still does not look good if you are a Bucs fan. What can we expect from this team each week?

  29. "that guy" Says:

mike evens dropped at least 7 passes maybe more. 3 of them hit him square in the hands, and almost all of them were on 3rd down.

this feels like the reincarnation of michael clayton, the best blocker our team has ever seen.

if you cant rely on a guy to catch the ball, then bench him.

im tired of hearing about how we have a “manbeast” or a “vaccume” or a “godzilla”, the guy doesnt even have a burst on the ball while its in the air.

no excuses for his performance tonight, you should never have a performance like that at the wr position if your drafted in the top 10. unacceptable.

  30. GhostofSchiano Says:

We’ve got Carolina and Jacksonville before the bye, if we lose both games like today’s game then lovie must go.

  31. Dreambig Says:

It was a hard fought game by two bottome of the league teams. We were in the game still before the Defense fell apart in the 4th qtr. What the hell was Lovie thinking going for a 57 yard field goal w/24 seconds? His plan was to go with a low percentage field goal followed by a low percentgae on side kick. That was stupid.

  32. Dreambig Says:

    bottome? whats that

  33. thunderchunkyPA Says:

The Glazier boys tried to go Back to the Future with this hire. Zimmer was the pick, and they wanted try and make the past the present. Players making dumb penalties is on the coach. This team was out muscled by back ups on the O line, and another sub par QB makes them look bad. With all the talk of Koetter, why did he go away from the screen game? I know the W/R’s had drops, but the stupid penalties are killing this team. And my fellow Bucs fan, the rookie O linemen played pretty damn good against JJ and the D Line today, except for BBQ Logan who for some reason, keeps his job.

  34. ndog Says:

Here come all the so called “Buc Fans” with their crap. This is not on Lovie at all. The kicker sucked, LVD missed a ton of tackles, Mike Evans dropped at least 3 balls, the oline could not run block at all, Jameis was not at his best and our linebackers cant catch a pass to save their lives. I am the first one to be critical of a coach but this one is not on Lovie. Players need to step up and make players when they are there to be made. Coaches can only put players in position at the end of the day they actually have to make a play!!!!!

  35. Curse of Gruden Says:

“Just wait on it” is in reference to the next loss.

  36. DallasBuc Says:

You haters need to just go away!!! The great Lovie Smith IS competent.
    Leave Britany alone!!!!

  37. csidedave Says:

Lot’s of mistakes today and though I am 100% behind him still, this loss is on America’s QB. Great game plan by Koetter, getting people open and dealing with Watt but Jameis was high and wide all day and had an awful game.

We could have won easily today with North Carolina’s QB Glennon, Michigan State’s QB Hoyer or Arkansas’s QB Hoyer.

We should have had enough TD’s to miss 3 more extra points.

  38. Brandon Says:

This was as much Winston’s fault as anyone else. First off, the forced throw over the middle in double coverage for an interception was a horrible decision. Secondly, he was off target most of the day. Yes there were some bad drops, but he was very inaccurate today.

  39. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs were in the game scorewise most of the way, I’ll give them that. Winning the game just wasn’t to be. The Texan’s were more desperate in a nutshell. Atlanta beating Dallas was a surprise. I didn’t think they would be that good. Can the Bucs beat the Panthers next week? That’s a tough win to imagine right now.

  40. GerbilsGoneWild Says:

    Lol

  41. GhostofSchiano Says:

Should have kept schiano through2014 then hired dan Quinn, look at the job he is doing in Atlanta

  42. Loubucfan Says:

This is what happens when you go cheap on the kicker. They should’ve paid Barth his money and we would have won today. If this was Manchester united, they would have paid the man. Cheap bastards!

  43. Desanova Says:

This business of specific personnel for every down on defense has to go. It’s a tell to the offense first of all, but the players can’t keep up with it. I’ve never seen a team rotate cornerbacks and safeties so frequently within drives.

  44. NewTampaChris Says:

The terrible part about this game was that it was obvious that Houston is a very bad football team. We were worse.

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Everbody can take some blame for this loss…..even the Realist…..he predicted it…

  46. Desanova Says:

Until that last kick, i was thinking keep the kicker for kickoffs and long field goals and bring in another for shorter field goals and extra points, but now clearly let’s just get Barth or Murray back.

  47. ndog Says:

Notice most of the off target throws by Winston were to Evans. Are we so sure it was Jamies that was off on the throws? Who is the one that has missed a ton of practice and some game time. notice all of the throws to everyone else were deadly accurate. Think about it folks if the routes aren’t run the correct depth or the correct angle the throws look off. There is no way to know for sure but it is weird that the throws to the rest of the receivers were accurate were the ones to Evans were “off”.

  48. BucDaddy82 Says:

I think the new turf may have added to the missed kicks for BOTH teams. No big deal. Get ready for Carolina. Go Bucs!

  49. Kalind Says:

Third start of his career. He did ok. He’s developing. This is on Lovie and the personnel department. This defense is just wretched. It was bad last week, it was only masked by the rank smell of te Saints. This D is going to get Lovie fired. His ability to coach a D MUST be in question now.

What have we seen that gives anyone any confidence that he is going to make the D better? Seriously. What.

  50. RC Kay Says:

Wtf! Two observations: first, this defense has zero ability to cover short routes across the middle and Lovie obviously has no answer for it…mallet threw the quick slant all day long. Second, our offensive play calling is horribly vanilla. All day long, same old intermediate routes to the outside with players like Martin and Sims can’t we find other ways to get them the ball in space with short throws underneath instead of running the up the middle time after time. I was hoping that Koetter would bring a more creative approach to offensive play calling but I guess I was sadly mistaken. This team is poorly coached and plays with very little urgency.

  51. lightningbuc Says:

    OH NO………..WE SUCK AGAIN!

  52. Uranus Johnson Says:

Come on, what’s with all of the Debbie downers? This was a great moral victory on the road against a pass rushing force that was largely kept at bay by our greatly improved OL.

The future’s so bright I gotta wear shaded

  53. chargedcbh Says:

Why is everything we do a struggle? We have all these high priced players that don’t deserve the money. Evans just catch the freakin ball, McCoy a couple of plays a game is not enough. VJax are u getting open, David u had how many missed tackles? Lovie who are we scaring with a 3 TE formation? Oh well this is Dungy all over, you’ll get fired & they’ll bring somone in with some guts and isn’t scared to attack a defense. Someone that lights a fire under his players, & will not stand for stupid mistakes EVERY game.

  54. Fartman Says:

    Winston seemed really really inaccurate.

  55. csidedave Says:

I’ll have whatever Uranus is drinking^^^^^^

  56. tmaxcon Says:

    Still waiting on it Nole…

  57. ndog Says:

Anyone putting this solely on the defense clearly does not know football. We could not run the ball at all. In fact the only TD we got was setup by the D. They simply wore down at the end because the offense did nothing most of the day. It is a team game that has to compliment each other and the offense did not do their part at all. Running the ball eats clock and wears a defense down which we did not do so of course they did.

  58. Soggy Says:

“and they beat themselves” Right on Joe that game was ours for the taking.. Sad we can’t even win those games..

  59. 30a Buc Fan Says:

If you’re not calling for Lovie’s head then why write this article, just to anger the goober fan base?

The defense did its job most of the game. Maybe with a few less drops and a couple field goals we’d all be feeling much better?

  60. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We just seem to have absolutely no speed at WR……all of our passes are contested…..have to be thrown perfectly….

We need to use Humphries and Sims in the slot more often.

Other teams continually burn us with short passes..

We went 1-13 on 3rd downs because we kept trying to throw longer passes……had some drops and some definate off-target throws….

  61. BucFan20 Says:

The Saints are 0-3 That is all you need to know. If you thought this team was for real last week then you just got your wake up call.

  62. Rob Says:

Sorry. I’m no Lovie apologist by any stretch. Between dropped passes, dropped picks, not being able to pick up a fumble and our kicker leaving 10 points (7 to be fair) on the field, there’s no way anyone who is not a troll hangs this on the coach.

This team is not good. Inconsistent officiating doesn’t help. REALLY bad calls and non-calls. ME13 OPI on the first possession but no DPI on the VJAX td that was reversed? Just awful but if this team executes, the Bucs win this game.

  63. Dooshlarue Says:

Has anyone checked on Noles yet?
If fear he may have hurt himself.
    Just waiting on it……..

  64. bucrightoff Says:

Rob, the thing is Lovie is the one coaching them. The poor execution, the constant holes on defense, the never ending penalties. That all comes back to poor coaching, and it’s the same mistake we’ve seen since day 1 here. Nothing is getting better, it’s the same team as last year.

  65. ndog Says:

You negative “fans” need to just go away because it is bad enough for the real fans on here watch our teams lose but to hear you morons come on here and say I told you so just rubs salt in the wound. I mean we all know that if the Bucs win you will just run and hide so why come on here and talk trash? So lets say we fire Lovie who exactly do you want us to get? We need to stick to the plan and get better, have you not noticed most of the best teams have coaches that have been in place for a long time? Of course you dont know that because you know nothing about football. The best teams year in and out: Pats, Seahawks, Packers, Bengals, Steelers, Ravens all have long term coaches but you idiots want us to change coaches every two years.

  66. Reezy Says:

Well I do have one question which is if we fire lovie who will want this job, seriously? We can’t keep firing coaches and expect to land the next great coach who will take us to the promised land. The franchise is not the Malcolm Glazer franchise it used to be now that the boys are running the show. We may have to wait this thing out until Lovie’s contract is up.

  67. CC Says:

You idiots who keep saying Winston has a bad game are moronic. There were at least 7-8 drops that were drive killers. He should have had 60% completion rate easily. Yeah the int was a bad throw. A few ithers were off the mark. But damn even the best QB s in the league have off throws. He s still a rookie whks receivers suckdd ass.

  68. Buccfan37 Says:

I said 7 wins in the guess the record deal, subtract 3 and 4 wins sounds about right and that might be reaching.

  69. Clodhopper Says:

So whose fault is it that 15 yards downfield has been wide open every game since the day Lovie got here? Whose fault is it that an inexperienced QB schools this team every single time we’ve played one since Lovie got here? Whose fault is it when Lovie hand picked most of the new players since he got here?

  70. bucrightoff Says:

    __________________________________________________

There will always be co-ordinators and coaches who will want jobs. Thing is Lovie’s entire profile just doesn’t stand up as worth of giving him more time.
Defense, which is supposed to be his calling card, has been quite bad his entire time here, makes average QBs look great. He’s not the guy long term, so why compound a mistake by not correcting it? There will be more exciting candidates out there, Bucs have a good cap situation and a young QB. It’ll be an attractive job, don’t worry.

  71. Tampa Tony Says:

Nole is too busy rubbing Lovie’s shoulders to feed us his excuses

  72. Richard Says:

I really don’t think the defense was all that terrible — for the first three quarters, How long was it 9-7? Only when the offense had that golden red zone opportunity result in zero points did you see the air just go out of the whole team, and then Houston just started gouging us.

  73. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

We are 3-16, and not showing any improvement. We are doing the same crap we did last year. Dan Quinn is not 3-0 just because of Dan Quinn. The Falcons have a real successful businessman as an owner, an experienced, successful pro football guy as president, and a successful GM picking players. Quinn is a great coach in a great organization. Where are the Bucs halfway decent, let alone good or great?

  74. Bucnut@ Says:

CC, count me one of the idiots who think JW had a tough day. He just is not very good. Simple as that.

  75. SOEbuc Says:

Nobody played well today. Except Kwon continuing to show improvement and the Oline played okay, I guess well for two rookies, whatever that new centers name is, and playing against JJ Watt. I liked the offensive play calling it just couldn’t be put together. And I know Mike Evans had a bad day, but all you haters out there really need to take it down a notch on the guy you all loved last year and practically his first game back at 100% (if thats even true) this year.

  76. CC Says:

Bucnut. At least you realize you are an idiot . How many balls were dropped today?

  77. Rob Says:

    Bucrightoff,

I’ll agree with you insofar as the undisciplined penalties. As for the calls and non-calls, who knows. I can’t, however lay the drops and missed FG’s on him.

  78. tmaxcon Says:

    Rob

Penalties, sloppy play and horrendous game plans are why Lovie smith must be replaced. simple as that… Lovie’s team has not showed one bit of heart or progress.

Will somebody please explain to me how a first year head coach in Atlanta can lead his team to victories including come from behind road victories yet lovie can’t ensure he only has 11 players on the field …. just curious.

  79. Rob Says:

    TMax,

I’ll put some on Lovie, but not all of it.

  80. Bucfan77. Says:

Penalties, undisciplined play on both sides of the ball, kicker inconsistent, dropped passes, QB not sacked we just stink like sh! T. When will people and hopefully the Glazers recognize that Lovey is a looser.

  81. The Buc Realist Says:

At least we all know the answer as to whether Lovie was Tanking the Season last year!!!!!

  82. Bucfan77. Says:

We will be good to have a 2-14 year the way they played today

  83. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bosa has been playing like crap this year get rid of lovie ans trade down…. plus i guess im still waiting on it

  84. Brian Says:

My favorite Lovie quote. “I really thought we’d play a lot better today. We had an excellent week at practice.”

  85. destro44 Says:

I’m sorry was don’t see this as a coaching loss. This game falls on the players, I can’t count all the dropped passes, Lovie can’t kick the last time I checked. The game plan did well protecting Winston, after the first TD the defence made adjustments and stopped playing soft. This was not on the coaches. The Titans game was all on the coaches. If any number of people could have done their jobs we bring a W back from Houston. I’m not sold on Lovie but I’m not trying to place blame where it doesn’t belongit makes the actual complaints about the coaches lose credibility.

I would like to see Lovie lay into the officials in a press conference and take a fine for the team. We continue to get the short straw on calls. Some of the defensive holding calls were ridiculous, and it wasn’t like they called the game tight both ways.

  86. DallasBuc Says:

    Hey racists…wait on it!

  87. Jason McLaurin Says:

This is very negative criticism this team doesn’t deserve. They played a great game I mean tampa defense balled out and the offensr got in scoring position everytime. If not for Kyle Brinzda missing three field goals then this would’ve been a victory but I think thr new turf attributed to that problem. This was not a bad loss. In fact this is the kind of loss that pulls a team together and gets a team rolling. I see a winning streak coming and some time in first place with what I seen today. LVD and Alexander had stud games today and Moore also played excellent. I think we have found our safety tandem on Conte and McDougald with Swearinger as the prime backup with a healthy Major Wright.
Winston is slowly beginning to come into his own in this league. Hes getting better by the game in avoiding sacks and turnovers. I think he still needs to hammer on limiting the turnovers more. The offensive line is beginning to get better and I think by season end this will be a great group that we dont need to be content with. I think V jax is fading in his effectiveness. He needs to become more involved in the offensive scheme as well since there is no ASJ for a lil bit to keep the chains moving. Winston needs to look for Murphy and V jax more on first and second down passing plays to get quick first downs to establish drives aggressively. Good game by the offense and defense but im wondering about special teams the rookie kicker looks impressive with a strong leg but is not very accurate right now. Like I said I think the turf played a huge part but hes missed some this season and needs plenty of work in practice.###play4WINSTonfight4LOViE
