Jameis Winston: “I Look Up To [Glennon]”

Jameis Winston explains his admiration of Mike Glennon

As Joe wrote yesterday, Jameis Winston is getting loads of work with the second team Buccaneers offense.

Jameis talked about what that means at One Buc Palace.

Jameis said he’s competing with Mike Glennon and “trying to earn a job,” but he stopped short of calling himself the backup quarterback right now.

“Being able to develop a relationship with all the guys is important,” Jameis said.

The expected franchise QB said he admires how Glennon performs on the field.

“He’s been doing great and I look up to him,” Jameis said of Glennon. “The things that he does is magnificent. So I try to always compete. So it’s always good to have a great guy in front of you. And it just helps you push yourself.”

Jameis also acknowledged that at today’s practice, Glennon making strong throws with the first team was directly connected to his improvement later in the OTA session.

No, Joe does not think there is any quarterback competition brewing, just an extremely healthy relationship, as well as a backup who will feel comfortable if pressed into duty.

What MG8 has been able to do the past couple of years without working with the #1 like a starter and out performing the so called #1 has been remarkable. I do hope that Jameis has the talent and out performs Glennon. And 1 day I would like to see MG8 get a chance to start somewhere and get as far away from Lovie as possible. Even the haters have to admit that 19-9 is incredible!!!

  2. SteveK Says:

Glennon would be an awesome backup. I hope we can resign him. I feel that if we actually had an offensive line, he could be decent, and an excellent backup to Jameis.

  3. Gus Says:

There should be a qb competition. Make Jameis earn it. It will make both qbs better

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    Rolling my eyes.

    Stop it, Jameis stop it.

    Too funny.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

Push yourself to compete with Glennon?

    Bwahahahahahaha!

  6. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Well, he is 6’6″…

  7. Aceofaerospace Says:

I believe Peyton Manning said before being released by Indianapolis, “You don’t draft a quarterback #1 overall unless you plan to start him on day one”. Shocked if Jameis not opening day starter. Glennon is trade bait.

  8. Casual Observer Says:

Joe – While I think Winston will be the starter, I think you consistently underrate Glennon. He has had poor (if any) offensive coordinators and perhaps the worst OL in the league. I doubt if anyone would have performed much better. He is an excellent backup and I agree with those who wish him well as a starter somewhere else. It likely will happen one day.

  9. Tom S. Says:

Poor Giraffe, coaches loved him enough to force Russell Wilson and Josh Freeman out but not enough to beat out Josh McClown, then to watch the team draft his replacement. I kind of feel for the guy…if I wasn’t stoked about having a franchise QB on my team.

  10. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol jameis is learning because if he had said the truth he would be hated even more. glennon had his chance last year and if he had showed any promise whatsoever the first overall pick wouldn’t have been jameis it would have been a defensive end but being that glennon is “America’s backup quarterback” he played himself. it’s sad when Cleveland was willing to pay josh mccown more to come play for them versus giving up a 3rd round pick

  11. Dinnerplate Nips Says:

Aaaaaand here goes Joe, planting that seed for a QB controversy…

I can see it now.. When Jameis starts going through some rookie growing pains in Aug, September, the former MGMers/Lovie Dissers, will start calling for ‘The Cannon’!

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Dinnerplate Nips <~~~ hey look a new name

  13. The Real Malloy Says:

He’s actually 6’7, but they list him at 6’6. Reason? There has never been a successful QB in the NFL 6’7 or taller. Dan McGwire is an example but there are quite a few more…

  14. BucFan20 Says:

You just have to show what a troll you are don’t you 87? Like I have have said. I am glad Winston is here. But I would not show my ass to much yet. He has not played 1 NFL game yet .

  15. tickrdr Says:

    Let’s see:
If Winston throws 30 INTs, and does at least as well as “ol’ cement shoes” with 19-9, that means JW3 throws for 63 TDs!!!! Wowza! No wonder he is North America’s QB.

    tickrdr

  16. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Even the haters have to admit that 19-9 is incredible!!!”

Incredible? Uh, no. I actually watched those games, and there was nothing incredible about Glennon. He has had one really good game, against Atlanta in Raymond James as a rookie, and one really good half against Pittsburgh last year. Feel free to let me know of another memorable game he’s had. His stats are skewed because he has always been very conservative with the ball, especially under Schiano. He’s horribly inaccurate with the deep ball, and he can’t handle a blitz. Again, if he was so incredible, where was the market for his services? You don’t think if we were offered a third round pick we would have jumped on that deal?

I swear, I don’t remember you ever complimenting him in the past. Funny how you only start sucking up to him when we bring someone in who you know is going to start. If I didn’t know any better, I would think you were just creating things to “be real” about. But no, that doesn’t seem like something you would do.

“Poor Giraffe, coaches loved him enough to force Russell Wilson and Josh Freeman out but not enough to beat out Josh McClown, then to watch the team draft his replacement.”

    ——-

You obviously don’t know the story with Russell Wilson. Google is your friend buddy. But you know what, don’t worry about it. People with knowledge will know you’re a clown, and people who are clueless and lazy will believe you.

  18. Hawaiian Buc Says:

By the way, Freeman went 25-6. Was he incredible too? Stat geeks, smh.

  19. Dinnerplate Nips Says:

    JW, “America’s Motherf-kin Quarterback”… Take note haters.

Nope a troll is Dinnerplate Nips…

  21. BucFan20 Says:

Yes. I will agree for sure he is a TROLL big time!!

  22. bucs4lyfe Says:

wow there are actually people that think mike glennon should keep the number 1 overall pick on the bench? the most important stat is his win loss record, don’t gloss over that when throwing out his stats. it’s commendable for a 3rd round pick but he’s still a back up because he doesn’t have the intangibles. when he ran out of bounds before the first down twice in one game he assured the only way he’ll start in tampa ever again is by injury or as a visitor

  23. Yungry Says:

Glennon is taller and faster than JW. The Cannon Arm is likely stronger at this point and Mike has more experience… Glennon is the best quarterback on the planet and everyone who thinks different is a giraffe hater and a Napolean Dynamite hater too…

  24. Leonard Scarnesi Says:

Oh Horrors for JOE! America’s Quarterback might be in the MGM!

JOE will likely rationalize that Winston, just to be nice, was lying about liking Glennon. That would be typical JOE thinking. JOE’s friend, the afternoon drive guy, will likely be happy with that type of cumbersome rationale. JOE and the drive guy are peas in a pod.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    LMAO!

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Mentioning Glennon and Winston in the same sentence is sacrilegious to most Winstonites. Glennon sucks, blah blah blah.

  27. Michael G Says:

With this offensive line…Jaboo will be looking up to a lot of guys from the ground.

  28. Yungry Says:

When will he be looking up at the judge in the civil suit? This guy has sociopath written all over him…

The clowns are coming out in groves today.

    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2014/05/licht-glennon-has-a-cannon/

supporting of MG8 and i was linking to a highlight video of Glennon throwing the deep ball!!!

If Winston out performs Glennon then I will be happy, because I just want to see competition and then the best player playing!!!

  31. America's Bucs Fan Says:

Every team needs a reliable and competent back-up QB as he is always one horrible play away from being the starter. Bucs fans should be very happy that they have Glennon for that role

  32. LakelandBuc Says:

It’s too eary to be having any type of controversial, at least wait until preseason. If the Bucs didn’t see anything in Glennon he would be here, Jameis is the QB of the future for the Bucs, he’s 21 and won’t turn 22 in 2016. Also people have to take into consideration the fact that Jameis only played 2 years of college football. If Jameis win or lose the job it will happen in preseason, so relax people it’s too early for the controversy.

  33. LakelandBuc Says:

I wish I could edit my comment I meant early instead of eary. And I meant Glennon would not be here instead of be here

  34. BuccaneEric Says:

Glennon will be a good backup. He is young and cheap and better than any QB out there to get. I would have loved for them to get a third rounder for him, but I’m glad they didn’t. That being said, I think the smart play would be to wait for a QB to get hurt this season and fleece a second rounder from a desperate playoff bound team.

  35. Buc-A-New Says:

JUST gonna put this out there.
Winston is about to get full support by the entire front office and they drafted OL the next two positions after him. Jameis has a Really good OC now that is devoted to him and Jameis has healthy 1 and 2 WRs. Jameis is not working with a rookie TE that just converted from WR. Jameis is not down to his 3rd and 4th string RB as Glennon was. Lets take all this into consideration and all get back with each other in about 8 games.

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Realist,

I stand corrected. But you’re a smart guy, you know how this league works. You know there really isn’g going to be a competition between a 3rd round pick of the prior regime and a #1 overall pick. I think Winston would win even if there was one, but it ‘aint gonna happen here, nor would it happen anywhere else. Complaining about it isn’t going to do a damn bit of good.

  37. Harry Says:

    @87 and @Hawaiian,
You guys are rolling today. Absolutely cracking ne up. Btw ’87, way to police new names! WTF is a “Dinnerplate Nips” anyway? Lmao

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

That’s probably them dogs staring up at you while you’re eating wanting a taste.

  39. The original "Kevin" Says:

I would not be upset if glennon started week one. Said that months ago….but quit bringing up since I think its unlikey.either way now that dirk koetter is here (for now) the qb position is the least of my worries

  40. The Buc Realist Says:

    @ harry

what ever you do, do not “google” it!!!

    @ Hawaiin Buc

Of course we know how this charade will end. But I want Glennon to come in hungry and try his hardest. What does Mr. Winston feed off of the best is competitive competition!!!

  41. lurker Says:

we all have to look up to mike geoffrey glennon… unless you are a fellow giraffe.

but seriously, he is right where he belongs, backup security.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

It sure would be nice if the Bucs had another Brees-Rivers type of thing going on with Glennon-Winston.

I guess we might not even find out what Glennon can do in his 3rd season, a season when most players start to take off. We could have another Brees on our hands and not even know it unless he takes the field.

  43. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

Lol I know Jameis is hilarious.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Yungry…Joe can remove whatever he wants to remove. It’s his website. Just like if someone spray painted your house with something you didn’t like. I suppose that’s free speech too though…

  45. Yungry Says:

87 I’m not gonna cry about it but there is a huge difference between freedom of speech and vandalism! Your comparison is very weak

  46. SOEbuc Says:

PLEASE STOP WITH THE GIRAFFE BS!!! i swear to god if the kid looked like leo decaprio there be about 90 percent less glennon haters

  47. Buc1987 Says:

Glennon would make an excellent Geoffrey the Giraffe for Toys R Us.

  48. tmaxcon Says:

    87
if the Geoffrey Girrafe job is filled big bird announced his retirement from the road shows last week. I’m a little amazed a backup that really has no bearing on the upcoming season is such a popular topic.

  49. lurker Says:

it has nothing to do with looks…

he is tall, gangly, timid, and prey to blitzers. giraffes are faster and more dangerous than glennon. he is more like geoffrey the huggable mascot.

  50. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Be happy both QB’s are looking good (in underwear football). Assuming Winston gets the starting nod (#1 pick and all) he is still a relatively slow not so mobile guy with a very questionable Oline protecting him. Glennon may be starting some games if “America’s QB” takes a beating like McCown did last season

  51. Lovie Smith Accidentally Reveals Jameis Winston as Starter Says:

[…] Winston has been cordial about his ongoing quarterback battle with Mike Glennon, saying that he looks up Glennon and repeatedly stressing that the starting spot is something is earned, not given. As you would […]
